How I Do My Laundry Sustainably Completely Off The Grid
Today I am going to show you all my tips, tricks, and tools for doing laundry with no electricity or running water 100% off grid here on our homestead.
Hi and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.
I know, laundry is not really all that glamorous, is it?! But, it still needs to get done! I have found when you are washing clothes by hand, you are much more careful with how often you wash and hand washing also gets things so much cleaner!
Here are the steps to washing clothes off grid in a condensed version…for more detail and helpful tips, you’ll want to watch the video :
Pre-treat stains with full strength Sal Suds for tough stains, diluted Sal Suds or white vinegar and water (1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water) for lighter stains.
Place load of clothes in wash bucket and fill wash bucket with enough water to cover your clothes so that they can be easily moved around with the wash wand.
Add soap of choice, I love the laundry sheets listed below for a fresh, clean smell and I especially like these for sheets and towels. I also use Oasis Biocompatible soap for a very light scent (usually use this one on Doug’s clothes) or Sal Suds for a more woodsy smell.
Add laundry peroxide…I use ¼ to ½ a cup per load. This helps sanitize, freshen, and brighten clothes.
Use the wash wand to “agitate” clothes and use the wash board to scrub any stubborn stains. At this point I usually let the clothes soap for about 15 minutes and then I come back and do the agitation process again with the wash wand.
Add about half the amount of fresh, clean water to the rinse tub that you used for the wash tub. Add ¼ to ½ a cup of white vinegar to water. White vinegar helps to neutralize any linger bad odors, brightens, and best of all helps to soften your clothes. Drying clothes outside can make them feel stiff and the white vinegar helps a lot with this.
Gently wring your freshly cleaned clothes and then transfer washed clothes to the rinse tub. Rinse each piece thoroughly and then run through the wringer. Hang them to dry and then enjoy your freshly washed/dried clothes.
Here is the set up and links to the laundry set up that is working great for me right now:

Procrastinating On The Fence Was A Bad Idea
In today’s video it’s man against beast as Douglas has some unexpected encounters!
Hello and welcome!
It’s been a while since we did a fencing video because, honestly, we were really sick of doing fencing! The whole time we have been procrastinating on fencing though, there was this nagging feeling that we really needed to get it done and today’s video is going to highlight why :)
Cows are known to be curious creatures, especially if there is food involved. We’ve also heard they can be stubborn and that males can sometimes be aggressive. It’s going to be obvious to all of you that we don’t have much experience with cows! Our two main reasons we were wanting to fence cows out was we didn’t want them eating the things we had planted and we didn’t them rubbing up against our trailer and other belongings because they can do some serious damage!
So, now that the fence is done and fixed (hopefully for good or at least a while!), we can now move on to getting the gates done…yay!!

The Reality of Having No Utilities
In today’s video we want to talk to you about what it’s really like to live disconnected from grid power and boondocking on our off grid homestead property.
Hello and welcome!
We have 3 forms of off grid power that we are using:
*Generators:
*Gas/propane inverter generator…we bought this one: https://bit.ly/3yKM2cy
*Solar generator and solar panels…we bought these: https://bit.ly/3S5bpg8 and these:
https://bit.ly/3TjVKe0
*Propane: Our trailer can run many appliances on propane including the refrigerator/freezer, the oven, the stove, furnace, the hot water tank, and the griddle. It’s pretty efficient and this is working well for us.
*Solar: Our RV has a couple of small built-in solar panels that trickle charge our battery and we are able to run the lights, fans, and water pump in the RV at night. We also use a lot of portable solar charging battery packs like this one: https://bit.ly/3evJsQY
We get a lot of people thinking that “off the grid” (also known as boondocking in an RV) means suffering by not having access to conveniences like electronics or hot water and that is not the case at all! We have all of the conveniences that we had at our house in Colorado and can even watch TV (YouTube mostly!), use our laptops, charge our phones, run fans, the microwave (with the trailer plugged into the gas/propane inverter generator), etc. When we need to run the air conditioner (which uses a lot of watts) that is built into our trailer, we run the gas/propane inverter generator and that thing powers the entire trailer easily…just as if we were plugged in at an RV park :)
The power situation was a big question mark for us for a long time, so we hope this helps those of you considering going off grid or those of you that have questions about what it’s really like…it’s very, very comfortable for us so far! Please feel free to post your questions below and thanks for watching today!

DIY Outdoor Wood Laundry and Work Table
In this video we will show you our outdoor workbench/laundry table build and how we are protecting it from the sun, rain, and wind with Shou Sugi Ban, also known as Yakisugi.
Hello and welcome!
I decided to build an outdoor laundry table that will also double as a workbench. Since the table is outside, made of wood, and will have water on it frequently, I decided to use an ancient Japanese technique for protecting wood called Shou Sugi Ban which is the common term here in the US, but in Japan you may hear it called Yakisugi. This technique is very simple and is a great way to use inexpensive, untreated wood for your outdoor projects.
Here is how I built the table…I used 2 x 4’s to build a rectangular frame that is 24 inches x 72 inches (2 feet x 6 feet). For the top, I cut 24 inch lengths of 6 inch x 1 inch wood and screwed them into the frame with 3” wood deck screws. For the legs, I flipped the table over and used 29 inch long 2 x 4’s and screwed them into the corners of the frame with 3” wood deck screws. Now for the protective finish!
SHOU SUGI BAN/YAKISUGI PROCESS
SUPPLIES YOU WILL NEED:
*Blow torch connected to propane…this is the torch I used https://thd.co/3dZcact
*Stiff, metal bristle brush…this is the brush I used https://thd.co/3V6SXXc
*Finishing oil like hemp oil or pure tung oil…I used tung oil because it does not have a strong smell…this is the oil I used https://thd.co/3RwRDd3
Start by making sure your wood is clean, dry, and free of debris.
Use your blow torch to carefully burn the wood…the heavier char you use, the more protected your wood will be.
Gently scrape the char off with the metal bristle brush…be careful not to scrape too much…you are essentially opening up the wood to receive your finishing oil.
Remove the char scrapings with a vacuum and/or soft, lint-free cloth.
Apply your first coat of oil following product directions.
Allow your first coat to dry for recommended time according to product directions.
Apply a second coat of oil following product directions.
Allow your second coat to dry for recommended time according to product directions.j
That’s all there is to it! Now you have a beautifully finished wood item that will hold up outside much better than untreated wood would :)

Update On The Homestead
In this video we are going to show you what we’ve been working on around the homestead!
Hey and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home near Denver, Colorado. We traveled for 3 months, then moved onto our off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona in September 2022. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our 2 rebels, Willow & Zoey and our kitty, Boo.
I (Keri) am back from visiting with my family and so glad to get on the property with Douglas! He did a great job of getting things set up while going it solo and his efforts are very much appreciated :)
A water truck was finally able to get to us and the two 1550 gallon cisterns were filled. We are still debating on whether or not to drill a well and appreciate all of your input on this!
The weather has started to cool down a bit which makes it so much nicer to work on projects. Douglas has been busy planting all of the trees and plants that we brought from Colorado as well as the ones we picked up here including several varieties of agave, pomegranate, olive, and a pineapple guava (sounds amazing, right?!). We brought irises that were from the house that I grew up in and I have transplanted them at every single other house (or apartment) I have lived in. They are very hardy and I am hoping they can adjust to the weather here.
Douglas also made a pretty cool tool holder out of a pallet and a couple of T posts and I started my off grid laundry set up which is close to being done…stay tuned for a separate video on that.
We also installed several solar lights around our temporary RV spot as well as some solar gate lights on the north and south entryways. We picked up the wood to build the gates and will be starting that shortly as well.
We have a little bit of barbed wire still to string up, but we are close to being done with that.
Douglas has also been enjoying using the tractor to refine the driveway and move a lot of rock to fortify some of driveway water crossings. He will be starting the planned swales soon too.
We have A LOT going on for sure, but it’s all good :) We also started talking about and researching crops to grow for profit that might do well here. We plan on running some trials and have talked about things like elephant garlic, lavender, cucumber, asparagus, leeks, and shallots. More to come on that as well.
We hope you and your’s are all doing well and if you or someone you love was impacted by the hurricanes in Florida, we are praying for their safety. Life can change so quickly, can’t it?! Be blessed :)

Knowing Whats Under The Ground Without Using Tools
In this video Douglas is going solo again and working on more development on our off grid property.

We are really trying to focus on getting more of our infrastructure and dirt work in and today Douglas is showing you further plans for the property and what he’s been up to while I am visiting with my family. We have long term plans to have trails winding through the property where the more scenic parts of the property are. We still have a lot of exploring to do to figure out where everything is going to go.
Our long term goal is to plant vineyards of some kind, possibly grapes or olives, as well as raising livestock for food security and the long term goal of making a living from the land. We are also still considering whether or not to dig a well and we will be making a decision on that in the next week.

Setting Up Essential Infrastructure
In this video Douglas is going solo and getting some of the infrastructure installed to make life on the off grid property more comfortable.

We traveled for 3 months and then moved onto our off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona in September 2022. I (Keri) am visiting with my kids and mom in Tucson to celebrate my incredible mom’s 81st birthday! You guys, this woman is amazing and so much of her life has inspired me. She still works as a psychologist and she has an absolutely incredible, unshakeable faith. She still lives in the Seattle area where I grew up, but is considering moving down here to partially retire which of course we all would love :) HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!!!!
Douglas is getting us all settled by installing the Solara screen room that we purchased from eTrailer.com as well as getting our smaller generator, a Predator 4550/3650 Inverter Generator, up and running. This one runs on unleaded gasoline. He had to buy a grounding rod and #6AWG grounding cable.
The Bluetti Maxoak 1000 running watt generator was also hooked up with four 100-watt solar panels. We plan on using this to power our Starlink system so we have reliable internet, at least as reliable as it can be :)
For pest control, he dug a trench around our living area and filled it with diatomaceous earth which will stop bugs with an exoskeleton and also sprayed underneath the trailer and car with Rat Away (www.rataway.com).

Moving Our RV Onto The Homestead
In this video we finally tackle moving onto the property in our RV…It’s going to get interesting because we have a HUGE wash that we have to get it through!
Hey and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home near Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our kitty, Boo.
Our time at the RV park has finally come to an end and we are so excited to FINALLY get onto the property and really start getting some work done! We are really over driving back and forth and the extra gas $ and time that that takes.
We waited until we thought it would be dry enough and tried our best to time it between monsoon rains. I can definitely say it was super nerve wracking as we prepared to make the final pull and wondering if we were going to get stuck or not! We had a plan though…we had shovels and we keep sand boards on the roof of the car at all times. We also could have brought the tractor down to give us that extra pull that we may have needed :)
Amazingly, we had NO ISSUES at all! The car didn’t have any problems and we think the little amount of rain we had gotten out there either late the night before or earlier that morning may have helped firm the sand up a bit!
We were so grateful and thankful that everything went smooth. We appreciate all of your prayers and positive thoughts :)

Water Is First Priority On A Homestead
In this video we will show you what went wrong with our water…another epic fail! This is one of THE most important pieces of a homestead and absolutely critical! What happened exactly and what we are going to be considering next.
Hey and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home near Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey!
First off, a huge shout out to @BackCountryPreps for the plumbing suggestions on our cisterns…thank you so much! Tune in to his channel for some great prepping suggestions!
We have planned from the start to collect rainwater for 100% of our water needs. Unfortunately, we are having trouble getting moved out onto the property because of our current water situation. We do not have City water and in order to get moved out and further our homestead, we need WATER! We hired a company to haul water out for us after the big wash at the end of our street was fixed. Unfortunately, the driver got stuck in that wash last week and never made it to our property with the water :( So, we are now considering alternatives to get water to the property, including a WELL!
This is a tough one for us because we have wanted to avoid digging a well for many reasons, but one major one is the cost. It’s VERY expensive to put in a well and there is NO guarantee that the well driller will even hit water. Without our rain collection system set up yet (and this is going to take us some time to put together), we are unable to move onto the property unless we can get water there.
We have had three of our incredible neighbors offer to let us use their well water until we can figure it all out. We want to avoid this though (if possible) because it is going to be some time (probably 6 months) before we have our rain collection in place and until it’s going to start monsooning again.
So, we had a well known and very respected well company come out yesterday and give us some quotes on drilling. UGH, we really don’t want to go this route. HOWEVER, it may also be a smart move so that we have “duplicate” water systems in place…like say we get a draught year (or two, or three) and we have no way to haul water…a well might be a great backup! We would much rather drink and have access to rainwater though and that is still going to be our primary water collection system.
We would love to hear your thoughts on whether or not we should drill a well!

Our New T Post Clip Fencing Tool
In this video we are sharing a new fencing tool/clips/technique and Who Exactly IS Bonnie?!!
Hey and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home near Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
Today we are working on fencing again (it sure is taking us a while!) and we just bought a new tool….we bought a big tub of T post clips without knowing what we were doing and when we went to try using those new T post clips (Baekert brand T post clips), we realized that we needed a special drill chuck to work with them, so we had to special order it and it took about a week to get it. These new clips that we are using are AWESOME and so much faster! We also started using our Baekert brand chain link fence stretching tool and that also made a huge difference!
Also, last episode we announced we made a big purchase for the homestead….many of you guessed right, IT’S A TRACTOR! We bought a refurbished 1980s tractor from www.arizonatractorsales.com and it was delivered last week…woohoo…game changer!
Things are moving along on the homestead :)

Barbed Wire Fencing Mistakes and Gabion Fence Posts
In this video we are sharing some of our barbed wire fence install mistakes and also showing you how we are building our gabion basket fence posts as the brace for our fence.
Hey and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
It feels like this fence is taking us FOREVER!!! With the very intense monsoon season, we have had a lot of rain and lightning delays, so we are taking a bit longer than we expected! BUT, once the fence is done, it’s DONE!
Our three (3) main reasons for the fence are:
To fence OUT livestock because Arizona is a “fence out” state meaning livestock can wander around and graze on your land and it’s up to the property owner to protect their land from this.
To fence IN the livestock that we will have some day soon.
To create a barrier to people accidentally or purposefully wandering onto our property. An example of this would be a hunter who is crossing our land to get to public lands to legally hunt.
As most of you know we have a TON of rocks on our property which is actually AWESOME because they are a 100% FREE RESOURCE…woohoo!!! So, some areas of the fence we were unable to drive the T post in very far, so we are making gabion baskets around the saggy T posts to fortify the fence and we think they look pretty cool too!
For the gabion baskets, we used these things and here are the prices at the time of this video:
*Concrete mesh from Home Depot…$309 for 5 foot high and 150 foot roll: https://www.homedepot.com/p/5-ft-x-150-ft-Steel-Mesh-Roll-05042/206154692
*14 gauge wire to connect the 2 sides of the basket together…$7.93 for a 100 foot roll:
https://www.homedepot.com/p/OOK-100-ft-75-lb-14-Gauge-Galvanized-Steel-Wire-50142/100200924
*ROCKS…luckily free for us :)

Monsoons Are Messing Up Our Plans
In this video we are FINALLY installing the last T post on our fence and navigating the monsoons and working around washes…what we like to call “seasonal rivers” :)
Hey and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
We finally got to the end of clearing our fence line and getting T posts set….woohoo!!! Doug celebrated by blowing off a little steam with his “Judge” LOL
We are also sharing with you about how the smaller washes on our property work together to form bigger and bigger washes as they get lower on the property. Why does this matter so much? Well, right now it’s mainly because the BIG wash at the bottom of our property also crosses the road up to our driveway. It has washed out in a way that we can still get our car through, but not our RV. So, what that means for us right now is holding off on getting the RV out onto the property. We are pretty bummed, but are trying to be patient.

Snake Aversion Training Our Dogs
In this video we are getting our Two Rebels, Zoey & Willow, snake aversion trained!
Hey and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
We finally took the rebels to a snake aversion training session and had a great experience! Now, some of you may be opposed to this because the dogs get a small shock to reinforce the training. Some of you may even say it seems cruel, but we strongly believe that the little shock the dogs received during the training is worth possibly saving their or our lives. You see snake aversion training isn’t just for the dogs, it’s also for us dog owners. Dogs have senses (smell, hearing, vision) far superior to us humans! What we learned is that once our dogs are properly snake trained, if they come across a snake, they will behave in a way that, if we are paying attention, will also help alert us to a snake nearby…we just need to know what to look for.
They also do toad aversion training. There is a toad around the US and in Arizona called a Colorado River toad or a Sonoran Desert toad. It lives in the sand most the year, but pops out after monsoon rains. If touched or handled by a dog, the toads secrete a milky toxin from their parotid gland. It’s important for dogs to avoid them because they have been known to die from contact with this toad. We plan on doing that training soon.
If you are in or near SE Arizona, we would highly recommend Paul Blaushild who runs A-dobe Dog Training. He’s been training dogs for decades and really knows his stuff. You can call him at 520-429-5133 to find out where they are hosting classes next and schedule your time….tell him Zoey and Willow sent you :)

The Cochise County Arizona Owner Builder Opt Out Permit
In this video we will show you what is CRITICAL that you MUST know before you even buy your land plus a step by step on how we applied for the Cochise County Arizona Owner-Builder Opt Out Permit!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
Take 2! We realized we had edited out some important stuff in the original version of this video, so if this looks familiar, it's just a re-do of the original.
You might be wondering what the heck an Owner-Builder Opt Out Permit even is…so, here is a clip directly from Cochise County Arizona’s website as of today’s date, August 2022:
“The owner builder amendment is a program for rural home construction in Cochise County. While program participants must comply with all Cochise County Building Safety Code and zoning requirements, the overall permitting costs associated with construction are lower than traditional residential home construction. This is due to either fewer, or no, building plan review and inspections being conducted, depending on the option selected by the participant. This amendment is intended to encourage the use of ingenuity and personal preferences of the owner-builder in allowing and facilitating the use of alternative building materials and methods. Be advised, this program does not exempt owner-builders from statewide codes such as the plumbing and fire codes and regulations regarding smoke detectors, nor does it exempt owner-builders from fire codes adopted by fire districts or the County.” Cited from Cochise County Arizona’s Website, August 3, 2022.
Some people get confused thinking that this particular permit, also called an amendment, exempts you from having to follow the County’s Building Safety Code, but that is not correct. It simply opts you out from having to have all the inspections and wraps the whole building permit process into one simple to submit bundle. The County does expect you to have the resources, knowledge, and tools necessary to follow Building Safety Code. Please note, we are not experts in Building Safety Code or in permitting, so please do your own research. This information is just to help you get started in the right direction.
If you want to build under the Cochise County Owner-Builder Opt Out Permit, the ONE THING THAT YOU HAVE TO GET RIGHT IS, the ZONING! One of the MOST important things you will need to check before you even purchase land, is that the property is in the right zoning to participate in this permit. As of 8/3/2022, the County recognizes the following zoning districts as qualifying if you have a minimum of 4 acres:
RU (RU-4, RU-10, RU-18, or RU-36 only)
SM (SM-174, SM-10, SM-18, or SM-36 only)
SR (SR-174, SR-10, SR-18, or SR-36 only)
To find out how a parcel or address is zoned in Cochise County Arizona, you can go to this link to check it:
https://cochise.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=0e9f91241bf247b8901686355ff6e144
If you are working with a Realtor (which you definitely should and we love Clay Greathouse at Tombstone Reality for off grid property!) to purchase property, they can also help you check this critical detail! If you already have purchased property in Cochise County Arizona and it is at least 4 acres in size, but you are not in the correct zoning, check with the County about having it rezoned because, don’t worry, this is a possibility too!

Finding Contour for Permaculture Berms and Swales
In this video we will show you the easiest way to find contour on your land to create permaculture berms and swales so that you can use your water more efficiently…critical for a desert homestead!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
One of the most important free tools that you can use to harvest water in a desert climate are berms and swales. A “swale” is essentially a ditch that you dig and the “berm” is the hill that is naturally made with the dirt you dig out. The swale will capture and direct water to where you need it to go (or not go) and the berm is where you can plant things that will benefit from that swale. The goal is to redirect water that naturally sheds down your property on the contour lines. Contour lines are level areas of the property that you will want to build your swales and berms on. Some contour lines will be very steep and your swales and berms will be closer together and some contour lines will be gently sloping or maybe even close to flat, so the contour lines will be further apart.
We learned a lot of these techniques from John Kaisner, The Natural Farmer. Brad Lancaster also has excellent information on rainwater harvesting. You can check their channels out for more detailed info on these topics:

Excavating and Clearing the Fence Line
In this video we continue to clear the fence line and have a BIG excavator come in and refine the building site.
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
We are still working on clearing the fence line. We decided to do this by hand so that we could direct the fence around the bigger trees or shrubs that we want to keep, especially those beautiful mesquite trees! We also know that our property has a huge amount of animals on it like jack rabbit, cottontail rabbit, lizards, birds, fox, mice, tortoises, snakes (ugh), and probably a lot more stuff that we haven’t seen yet, so we want to try to preserve their homes too.
We had Marty from Marty Staneart Excavation come out and help us fine tune the building site. Once he started digging, we realized we would have to revise our home’s blueprint and take out the “tiers” that we thought we would do…the land just won’t allow it. The good news is Marty worked magic and was able to build up an almost level site and the even better news is underneath the surface layers is bedrock! YAY for bedrock, right?! We are very happy we will have such an uncompromising foundation :) If you need excavation work done here in Cochise County, we would highly recommend Marty: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057505386965
Stay tuned for our next video where we will be showing you all about berms and swales!

Prepping For A High Tensile Barbed Wire Fence | Developing The Property | Fencing
In this video we prep for our barbed wire fence and mark out our homesite for the excavator coming next week!
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
We decided to go with Bekaert 4 prong 5” spaced 15.5 gauge high tensile barbed wire. Bekaert has some great educational videos and information on choosing your fence…check them out here:
https://fencing.bekaert.com/en
We will be doing 5 strands of this along the entire perimeter, except the very back property line which already has barbed wire that was installed by the ranch behind us. We chose Bekaert because of it’s availability and affordability plus their manufacturing is done here in the US and that’s really important to us! We chose high tensile because it’s made to keep out (or in) cattle and bison.
We’ve got some pretty big free ranging cattle that come through the neighborhood and we did see signs that they had been on our property. Cattle can do a lot of damage to structures because they will lean and rub on things. We are also hoping our fence will keep out javelina, coyote, and possibly deer. We plan on doing the 5 strands in a graduated fashion (kinda like the way field fencing is) with the strands tighter together near the bottom and further apart near the top.
Once again, thanks for following along with us and we hope to inspire you to live your best life, whatever that might mean for you!

FINALLY Getting To Start Our Homestead | Developing The Property
It’s ABOUT TIME we got this homestead started, right?!! #offgrid #homestead #simplify
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!
In this video you will get to see us arrive on the property for the first time after the driveway and build site were cut in while we were off vacationing and laying around ;-)
We also made our first HUGE purchases of a small hauling trailer and an IBC tote. We purchased a hauling trailer from Harbor Freight for $1199.99. We tried to find a used one, but no luck. We also purchased this 275 gallon IBC tote from Harbor Freight for $429.99. We also decided to purchase a shade canopy because many areas that we will be working have no large trees and we also wanted an area for the 2 rebels (our dogs Willow & Zoey) to hang out under. We bought one from WalMart for $39.98.
Things are HAPPENING people and it’s pretty dang exciting :) Next up will be the research we did on our fencing and what we decided to go with, so stay tuned!

It's Time To Start Working On Our Homestead
Enough vacationing already….it’s time for us to GET TO WORK on our homestead! We are so thankful that we got to take this wonderful trip through the western US and down Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway! We had such a great time and really got to know our rv :)
Hey! We are Douglas and Keri…follow us as we make the move from our urban home near Denver, Colorado to our off grid homestead property in Southeast Arizona.
If you are considering buying off grid or homestead property be sure to subscribe to our channel so you can follow our journey!
Many have said we are crazy for taking a road trip like this with gas prices as high as they are, but we thought what if the gas prices are even higher in a year or two? It also gave us a lot of down time to brainstorm and research what we will be doing on the homestead and really get into a good mindset after leaving our full-time jobs.
The states we got to visit were:
*Arizona where we stayed in Usery County Park Campground in Mesa as well as Sedona where we stayed at Rancho Sedona RV Park.
*Utah where we saw Lake Powell, Capitol Reef National Park, Escalante, Bryce Canyon, and Zion then headed north up to Salt Lake City and Antelope Island State Park and then the Bonneville Salt Flats.
*Nevada where we saw Wendover and hit some crazy winds and storms as we made our way into Oregon.
*Oregon where we stayed in a couple of beautiful campgrounds and then on to Washington State.
*WA State where we got to visit Keri’s family and our dear friends Mark & Lisa and then we headed up to the very NW tip of WA and started our official Highway 1 journey.
*Oregon (again) where we stayed at a very cool Boondock site called Blue Heron French Cheese which is a working ranch, farmers market, and gift store where you can buy local wines and other gourmet foods.
*California which Doug had never seen, so that was fun making our way down the twisty turns of the Pacific Coast Highway where we saw more family and also saw the Redwoods and some incredibly beautiful beaches! We discovered our dog, Willow, LOVES the ocean and Zoey, the Chihuahua, not so much :) We ended our California stay in Borrego Springs which is not far from the Palm Springs area. This hot/dry climate prepared us to get back to Arizona!
We are now staying in Arizona about 30 minutes drive from our property. We have officially started homesteading and are so excited to start sharing videos of the progress on the property with you!
Once again, thanks for following along with us and we hope to inspire you to live your best life, whatever that might mean for you :)

Redwoods and beaches of the California coast in an RV | Episode 33 #pacificcoasthighway #rvtravel
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri…follow us as we make the move from our urban home near Denver, Colorado to our off grid property in Southeast Arizona.
If you are considering buying off grid or homestead property be sure to subscribe to our channel so you can follow our journey!
In this episode we share our journey down the Pacific Coast Highway 1 in California! We got to see some beautiful places in California, but towing an RV travel trailer down Highway 1 is pretty nail-biting!
We saw many other RVers doing the same thing and we even saw some semi trucks on this Highway. There are many sharp turns, steep grades, and huge drop offs, so if you are considering traveling in any type of RV down the Pacific Coast Highway, you will want to consider this.
We are getting close to getting back to our property and getting geared up to start our off grid life! Next up will be a recap our epic 6 week adventure in our RV with new pics and footage we haven’t used yet :)

RV Travel Through The Pacific NW | Life In Our Trailer | Episode 32 #rvlife #pacificnw #roadtrip
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri…follow us as we make the move from our urban home near Denver, Colorado to our off grid property in Southeast Arizona.
If you are considering buying off grid or homestead property be sure to subscribe to our channel so you can follow our journey!
In this episode we are traveling through Oregon and Washington State in our RV. This marks the halfway point on our big road trip and we are starting to look forward to getting on the property and getting going.
We had a lot of rain and cold weather in Oregon and Washington, but these two states are so beautiful! Doug and I both grew up in Washington and while we were there we got to visit my mom and my brother and his wife and kids…it was a great visit!
On the beach in Washington, we discovered that our dog, Willow, LOVES the water and to run in the sand! We also discovered that our dog, Zoey, does not like the water at all! We also discovered that Willow loves to help “herd” Zoey back to us when Zoey isn’t listening very well :)
To wrap up this trip we headed out of Washington to go down the Oregon Coast. If you haven’t seen the Oregon Coast, it is gorgeous!
Next up, the California Coast!

RV Travel Through Utah | Life In Our Trailer | Episode 31 #rvlife #rvinutah #goingoffgrid
Hi - We are Douglas and Keri…follow us as we make the move from our urban home near Denver, Colorado to our off grid property in Southeast Arizona.
If you are considering buying off grid or homestead property be sure to subscribe to our channel so you can follow our journey!
In this video we head to the State of Utah! If you’ve never visited Utah, it is absolutely beautiful and we especially love the southern part of the state. There is seriously so much to do and see, it was hard to decide where to start. We ended up visiting Capitol Reef National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, the Escalante area, Zion National Park, Antelope Island State Park, and the Bonneville Salt Flats. We only did 2 days at each park which really was not enough, but we made the best of it :)
One of the things we have learned along the way while learning to be full-time RVers is that staying just 1 night anywhere is not the greatest, especially if you had a long drive that day. RVing is not “hard” per se, but it can be a lot of work to set up the RV at each stop, level it, hook up all the utilities, and oh, don’t forget to make sure you have dinner figured out! If we were to do it over, we would have made the drives on the 1 night stays a lot shorter!
The other lesson learned is that the National Parks do not allow dogs on most all of the trails. We found that each National Park we visited had 1 dog-friendly hike. Apparently, there are places close by to board your dog while you hike, but that's not very fun for the dogs! We ended up finding some hikes that were close to some of the parks that were dog friendly and just as beautiful :)
In our next video we are heading to the Pacific Northwest, so stay tuned!
Thanks for watching today…see you soon!
