Water Is First Priority On A Homestead

In this video we will show you what went wrong with our water…another epic fail! This is one of THE most important pieces of a homestead and absolutely critical! What happened exactly and what we are going to be considering next.

Hey and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home near Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey!

First off, a huge shout out to @BackCountryPreps for the plumbing suggestions on our cisterns…thank you so much! Tune in to his channel for some great prepping suggestions!

We have planned from the start to collect rainwater for 100% of our water needs. Unfortunately, we are having trouble getting moved out onto the property because of our current water situation. We do not have City water and in order to get moved out and further our homestead, we need WATER! We hired a company to haul water out for us after the big wash at the end of our street was fixed. Unfortunately, the driver got stuck in that wash last week and never made it to our property with the water :( So, we are now considering alternatives to get water to the property, including a WELL!

This is a tough one for us because we have wanted to avoid digging a well for many reasons, but one major one is the cost. It’s VERY expensive to put in a well and there is NO guarantee that the well driller will even hit water. Without our rain collection system set up yet (and this is going to take us some time to put together), we are unable to move onto the property unless we can get water there.

We have had three of our incredible neighbors offer to let us use their well water until we can figure it all out. We want to avoid this though (if possible) because it is going to be some time (probably 6 months) before we have our rain collection in place and until it’s going to start monsooning again.

So, we had a well known and very respected well company come out yesterday and give us some quotes on drilling. UGH, we really don’t want to go this route. HOWEVER, it may also be a smart move so that we have “duplicate” water systems in place…like say we get a draught year (or two, or three) and we have no way to haul water…a well might be a great backup! We would much rather drink and have access to rainwater though and that is still going to be our primary water collection system.

We would love to hear your thoughts on whether or not we should drill a well!
