The Reality of Having No Utilities

In today’s video we want to talk to you about what it’s really like to live disconnected from grid power and boondocking on our off grid homestead property.

Hello and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

We have 3 forms of off grid power that we are using:

*Generators:

*Gas/propane inverter generator…we bought this one: https://bit.ly/3yKM2cy
*Solar generator and solar panels…we bought these: https://bit.ly/3S5bpg8 and these:

*Propane: Our trailer can run many appliances on propane including the refrigerator/freezer, the oven, the stove, furnace, the hot water tank, and the griddle. It’s pretty efficient and this is working well for us.

*Solar: Our RV has a couple of small built-in solar panels that trickle charge our battery and we are able to run the lights, fans, and water pump in the RV at night. We also use a lot of portable solar charging battery packs like this one: https://bit.ly/3evJsQY

We get a lot of people thinking that “off the grid” (also known as boondocking in an RV) means suffering by not having access to conveniences like electronics or hot water and that is not the case at all! We have all of the conveniences that we had at our house in Colorado and can even watch TV (YouTube mostly!), use our laptops, charge our phones, run fans, the microwave (with the trailer plugged into the gas/propane inverter generator), etc. When we need to run the air conditioner (which uses a lot of watts) that is built into our trailer, we run the gas/propane inverter generator and that thing powers the entire trailer easily…just as if we were plugged in at an RV park :)

The power situation was a big question mark for us for a long time, so we hope this helps those of you considering going off grid or those of you that have questions about what it’s really like…it’s very, very comfortable for us so far! Please feel free to post your questions below and thanks for watching today!
