The Most Unique Volcano on Earth
#oldoinyolengai #tanzania #africa #volcanoes
Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano in Tanzania, has a rich geological history that spans over 500,000 years. Its formation occurred in two primary stages: the first, Lengai I, involved the eruption of phonolite lava, and the second, Lengai II, was characterized by nephelinitic rocks. The current structure of the volcano was largely shaped about 15,000 years ago.
The volcano is renowned for its rare natrocarbonatite lava, first recorded around 1,250 years ago. This lava is unique in its low temperature and rapid transformation from black to white upon cooling. Ol Doinyo Lengai has experienced several significant eruptions and collapses throughout its history, influencing the surrounding landscapes and contributing to features like the Shifting Sands in the Olduvai Gorge.
In recent times, the volcano has been continuously active, with recorded eruptions dating back to the 1880s. Notable activities include explosive eruptions in 1917, 1940, 1966, 1983, and 1993, as well as a major eruption in 2007 that led to the formation of a new crater and had widespread effects on the local environment and communities.
Ol Doinyo Lengai stands out not only for its ongoing volcanic activity but also for its unique lava flows, which are cooler, highly fluid, and distinctively colored compared to typical volcanic lavas. This makes it a subject of significant geological interest and study.

Several Youtubers have recently began to put out a hypothesis regarding a possible mega tsunami event that they speculate swept through the Saharan desert. Among these, is the prominent Youtuber, Jimmy Corsetti. I've watched Jimmy's channel for years, and, have also been a fan of Randall Carlson for the same period of time. I've spent many hours of my life nerding out on both channels, and they are responsible, in part, for the path I am walking today. I've always been fascinated by earth shattering mega disasters. And that's actually what originally led to my foray and journey into Geology.

How New Zealand's Massive Mountains Formed
#newzealand #newzealandalps #southernalps
Discover the captivating geological story of the New Zealand Alps, also known as the Southern Alps, in our latest video. This majestic mountain range, a product of millions of years of Earth's dynamic processes, offers a glimpse into the powerful forces of plate tectonics and erosion.
Formed primarily through the collision of the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates, the Southern Alps showcase the dramatic results of continental uplift. The Alpine Fault, a significant geological feature, plays a central role in this process, contributing to the rapid rise of the range with an uplift rate of about 7-10 mm per year.
Throughout their history, the Southern Alps have been sculpted by the forces of glaciation and erosion. The glaciers, particularly active during past ice ages, carved out deep valleys and fjords, shaping the rugged landscape we see today.
