Cosmic Archaeology: Using Black Holes To Uncover Evidence of the Universe’s First Stars
Researchers have developed a method to detect the first stars of the universe by observing the unique flares produced when these stars are torn apart by black holes. These findings could allow us to understand more about the early universe, with the help of NASA’s latest telescopes which can observe the resultant infrared emissions.
Shortly after the Universe began with the Big Bang, the first stars, composed mainly of hydrogen and helium, began to form. The properties of these first-generation stars, Pop III, are very different from stars like our own Sun or even the ones that are forming today. They were tremendously hot, gigantic in size and mass, but very short-lived.
Pop III stars are the first factories to synthesize most elements heavier than hydrogen and helium around us today. They are also very important for forming later generations of stars and galaxies. However, there have not been convincing direct detections of Pop III stars up to now, as these stars formed in the early universe are very far away and way too faint for any of our telescopes on the ground or in space.

Breaking Light Speed: The Quantum Tunneling Enigma
In an amazing phenomenon of quantum physics known as tunneling, particles appear to move faster than the speed of light. However, physicists from Darmstadt believe that the time it takes for particles to tunnel has been measured incorrectly until now. They propose a new method to stop the speed of quantum particles.
In classical physics, there are hard rules that cannot be circumvented. For example, if a rolling ball does not have enough energy, it will not get over a hill, but will turn around before reaching the top and reverse its direction. In quantum physics, this principle is not quite so strict: a particle may pass a barrier, even if it does not have enough energy to go over it. It acts as if it is slipping through a tunnel, which is why the phenomenon is also known as “quantum tunneling.” What sounds magical has tangible technical applications, for example in flash memory drives.

Pills in Disguise: The Surprising Surge of Fentanyl Seizures
From 2017 to 2023, U.S. law enforcement reported a significant increase in seizures of illicit fentanyl, particularly in pill form. Over 115 million fentanyl-containing pills were seized in 2023, up from about 50,000 in 2017. Credit: SciTechDaily.com
NIH-supported study highlights increasingly dangerous illicit drug supply, risk of pills not coming from a pharmacy.
Law enforcement seizures of illicit fentanyl increased dramatically in number and size between 2017 to 2023 in the U.S., especially in pill form, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
The number of individual pills containing fentanyl seized by law enforcement was 2,300 times greater in 2023 compared to 2017, with 115,562,603 pills seized in 2023 vs. 49,657 in 2017. The proportion of fentanyl pill seizures to the total number of fentanyl seizures more than quadrupled, with pills representing 49% of illicit fentanyl seizures in 2023 compared to 10% in 2017. The study also found a significant increase in the number and weight of fentanyl-containing powder seizures during this time.

The Rise of Artemis: NASA’s Towering New Launcher Takes Its First Stand
NASA advances the Artemis program with the setup of the mobile launcher 2 at Kennedy Space Center, essential for launching the next-generation SLS rockets aimed at lunar and Mars missions.
At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the foundation is set for launching crewed missions aboard the agency’s larger and more powerful SLS (Space Launch System) Block 1B rocket in support of Artemis IV and future missions. On May 9, 2024, teams with NASA’s EGS (Exploration Ground Systems) Program and contractor Bechtel National Inc. transferred the primary base structure of the mobile launcher 2 to its permanent mount mechanisms using the spaceport’s beast-mode transporter – the crawler.

Termites on Tour: How Climate Change Is Bringing Pests to Your Doorstep
Rising global temperatures could lead to more widespread termite infestations, increasing damage costs beyond the current 40 billion USD per year, with researchers calling for immediate action to mitigate this threat.
With the rising temperatures of climate change, homeowners face a new type of threat: invasive termites. Previously unaffected areas could see an influx of termites, and the financial implications are substantial. Currently, termites cause over 40 billion USD worth of damage each year, and as their population expands, this cost is sure to grow.

Toxic Downpour: “Forever Chemicals” Rain on All Five Great Lakes
A study on PFAS in the Great Lakes shows uniform pollution levels from precipitation and differing rates of chemical removal across the lakes, emphasizing the need for enhanced regulatory measures.
Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as “forever chemicals,” are enduring environmental contaminants found in air, water, and soil. Their chemical stability allows them to circulate through the water cycle, infiltrating sources of drinking water and precipitation. Research reported in the American Chemical Society’s journal Environmental Science & Technology indicates that precipitation deposits roughly equal quantities of PFAS into each of the Great Lakes; however, the lakes eliminate the chemicals at different rates.
