The Ramayana is an ancient Indian epic that tells the story of Prince Rama. The story follows Rama's life, from his miraculous birth to his exile, defeat of the demon Ravana, and eventual restoration to the throne of Ayodhya.
The Ramayana is traditionally attributed to the sage Valmiki and dated to around 500 BCE to 100 BCE. It was composed in Sanskrit and taught to Rama's sons, the twins Lava and Kush.
The story of the Ramayana is:
Miraculous birth: Rama is the seventh incarnation of the god Vishnu.
Exile: Rama is exiled from his kingdom of Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana.
Abduction: Sita is abducted by the evil demon Ravana.
Rescue: Rama rescues Sita with the help of the Monkey God, Hanuman.
Battle: Rama kills Ravana of Lanka in a long battle to get back his wife Sita.
Restoration: Rama is eventually restored to the throne of Ayodhya.
