Reproductive freedom / justice and abortion access in the U.S. military - Ep 129
Shiloh Emelein and Rachell Tucker joins us to discuss the state of reproductive justice and abortion access within the U.S. military. We cover the Dobbs decision from the Supreme Court, how President Biden could take much bigger strides in his “defense” of abortion rights, and a whole lot more.
Shiloh Emelein (they/them/theirs) is a queer, trans, non-binary creature living with their fluffy cat on Ohlone Land (also known as the Bay area, California). Their world view and moral compass were turned upside down while deployed with a Marine Helicopter Support Unit in Al Anbar Province, Iraq and then Kuwait City. They joined About Face: Veterans Against War in 2018 with the hope in action to catalyze change and repair the harms caused by the Military-Industrial Complex. Shiloh believes that the reclamation and celebration of our bodies, our joy, and our pleasure is at the core of demilitarizing ourselves, our beliefs, and the structures we currently live within. They are thrilled to have the chance to care for the About Face community in a light of collective liberation and collective healing.
Rachell Tucker is an anti-imperialist veteran of the US Army 2002 to 2011. She is an educator and activist who lives in San Antonio Texas, but born and raised in Miami, FL. She is a member of about face vets against the war and the Party for Socialism and Liberation. And has been an active organizer with the Mujeres Marcharan Coalition who has been leading in the women's struggle in the city of SA.

War of The Worlds w/ Tom Secker - Ep 126
Author and podcaster Tom Secker, host of the ClandesTime podcast and writer / publisher of Spyculture.com, joins us to discuss the 2005 Tom Cruise movie, War Of The Worlds, which is based on the famous H.G. Wells novel. Both its development and release during the early days of the War on Terror and the war in Iraq give it that “Could this be terrorists…again?!!” facade, while the military units seem more interested in crowd control than fighting the aliens. Lastly, it’s undeniably a Steven Spielberg movie through and through; be prepared to root for a hero who does almost nothing heroic.

The Siege of Fallujah w/ Ross Caputi & Scott Spaulding - Ep 125
Ross Caputi and Scott Spaulding join us to discuss The Sacking of Fallujah, both the event and the book which Ross co-wrote. Fallujah is seen by the American empire as a great victory over the burgeoning Sunni insurgency during the early years of Operation Iraqi Freedom, but for the people of Fallujah and their descendants, it is nothing less than the entire destruction and poisoning of their people and land. Birth defects are rampant among the population, spurred by the use of heavy munitions like white phosphorus, depleted uranium, and thermobariacs, which have destroyed the environment for generations.
Ross' book, The Sacking of Fallujah: A People's History (Culture and Politics in the Cold War and Beyond), is a great primer on the subject, as well as a detailed microcosm of the war in Iraq and its tactics. I consider it a must-buy. https://amzn.to/3QC8via

Camilo Mejia and Nicaragua - Part 2 - Ep 124
Here's part 2 of our discussion with Camilo Mejia, this one focusing much more on Nicaragua, the history of the Sandinista movement, and the many ways U.S. hybrid warfare affects it all.
Road from Ar Ramadi: The Private Rebellion of Sergeant Camilo Mejia: https://amzn.to/3e94sMy
Camilo Mejia was born in Nicaragua but moved to the US as an adolescent. Shortly after graduating from high school, after only two college semesters, he joined the U.S. Military and was eventually deployed to Iraq in 2003. After five months in active combat, including posts in Baghdad, al Haditha, al Asad, and al Ramadi he was sent home on leave, where he recognized and publicly condemned the Iraq war as criminal and immoral. He was subsequently court-martialed and charged with desertion, and sent to serve nine months of incarceration at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. Mejia lives in Miami and continues to actively speak out against U.S. imperialism.

Censorship, mind control, biological warfare, and the Korean War w/ Dr. Jeffrey Kaye - Ep 111
For anyone who follows this podcast, it’s never a surprise when you hear the words “I don’t know.” Not due to a gap in knowledge of any kind or the question being one of an odd variety, but because it simply lives behind this giant wall of silence called the U.S. classification system. The Korean War has been over since 1953 and yet, we still don’t know the full extent of U.S. culpability in using biological warfare against North Korean / Chinese forces. Censorship is a different matter. For a country ostensibly on the side of “free speech”, the United States often uses censorship to shore up their narratives among the American people.
Dr. Jeffrey Kaye joins the podcast to discuss his most recent CounterPunch piece, “CIA, MKULTRA and the Cover-up of U.S. Germ Warfare in the Korean War.” “In this article, CIA mind-control programs are linked to experiments on returning Korean War POWs. Also revealed is the extent to which CIA officials from Projects Bluebird, Artichoke and MKULTRA collaborated with U.S. biological warfare efforts, including the top secret “processing” of high-ranking POWs who confessed to U.S. use of biological weapons.”
Jeff Kaye is a highly respected psychologist in San Francisco and an expert on current torture and rendition techniques and developments. He writes on torture and other subjects for Firedoglake, Truthout, and most recently at CounterPunch.

This Is Not A War Story w/ Talia Lugacy - Ep 98
Talia Lugacy, director and co-writer of This Is Not A War Story, drops by the podcast to discuss the film's upcoming release. A collaborate work between Talia, her cast and crew, and a group of anti-war veterans, the film takes to task many of the conventional and stereotypical tropes that are associated with veteran portrayals in films and television.
The film will be screened this upcoming weekend on Sunday, March 28 at 5:00pm, at the Cinequest Film Festival, followed by a Q&A with Talia, executive producer Rosario Dawson, actor Sam Adegoke, and veteran / About Face member Eli Wright.
"THIS IS NOT A WAR STORY tracks a ragtag group of combat veterans in New York whose anti-war art, poetry and papermaking keep them together, despite the spectre of their friend’s suicide and the ever-crystalizing fact that healing from war is sometimes an impossible mission."
Talia Lugacy co-wrote and directed the feature film "Descent" starring Rosario Dawson, which premiered in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released theatrically by Warner Independent. Despite an NC-17 rating "Descent" was championed by The New York Times as "essential to see, a vividness never seen in an American film."
Talia is a full-time Assistant Professor of Screen Studies at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School, in NYC. She is also a member of the Actors Studio Playwrights & Directors Unit, and began studying filmmaking at NYU Tisch at the age of 15. She has directed numerous short films as well as directed environmental PSAs with Frack Action, Water Defense, Mark Ruffalo and Food & Water Watch.
