After 10 hours, the tone of Grandia III gets hella serious
Grandia III starts with happy-go-lucky wannabe pilot Yuki deciding to fly his makeshift plane from his small island home to the mainland, where he hopes to meet a the famous pilot he idolizes.
Shortly after setting off, he and his mom Miranda come across a mysterious girl who needs help. The trio soon meets a gambling ship captain and take on a corrupt casino owner.
But then, this upbeat, silly story about naïve heroes, suddenly gets serious as the team is threatened with a life-threatening situation. The next 15 minutes are full of emotion and mystery.
Playing on Xbox Series X via XBSX2. Integer upscaling on, Show overscan on, Anti-blur on, Internal resolution 6x, Anisotropic filtering 16x, FXAA on, Shade boost on.

MRGPlays Space Attack (Atari 2600) -- Retro Let’s Play and Reminiscence
Space Attack was one of those games that I didn’t remember much, probably because I didn’t know how to play it as a kid. What I found was actually something of a marvel of 2600 game development – this one has Real Time Strategy elements (admittedly, they are rudimentary) combined with a space shooter. Who knew! There is also a mode where the game will continue to play the RTS in the background while you are blasting aliens in the shooter mode. Who knew?!
As for the game, the shooting is fun, but the RTS/radar screen controls are cumbersome and unintuitive.
Playing on the Atari 2600+. No additional enhancements.

MRGPlays Yars’ Revenge (Atari 2600) -- Retro Let’s Play and Reminiscence
With Yars’ Revenge getting a new sequel soon (Yars Rising, coming soon from WayForward and Atari), I wanted to take a close look at the Atari 2600 classic original. A game I never owned (though was always enamored of, due mostly to box art), I was thrilled to find a great copy at a local used game shop. I’ve played it via emulation before, but this is the first time I’m playing a cart, and after having read the instructions.

Tower Toppler (Atari 7800) -- Game Manuals Were Cool
In the old days, video games came with paper manuals, and--in many cases—these manuals were full of cool art, bonkers worldbuilding, game tips, and extra creative details.
Tower Toppler has some cool lore in the manual, but not a lot of cool art. Still, the names of the towers were a fun surprise.

Tomcat has an essential manual for playing the game. This is one of the most intricate control systems I’ve ever seen, that just used the joystick, and the buttons and switches available on the base console. The game isn’t great, but the control system is worthy of being remembered!
Enjoy!

MRGPlays Pole Position II (Atari 7800) -- Retro Let’s Play and Reminiscence
Manual video available here:
YouTube: https://youtu.be/mPRGul1TLSU
Rumble: https://rumble.com/v4matie-pole-position-ii-atari-7800-game-manuals-were-cool.html
Pole Position II is a fast and fun arcade racer for the Atari 7800, but the low horizon and rudimentary graphics make obstacles hard to see and avoid. The slightest tap on another car or an off-track sign destroys your car – it’s a fun animation, but it makes for frustrating gameplay. As for how the driving feels, it seems like the track is being built a few dozen yards in front of you as you go, rather than being a persistent thing on the world.

In the old days, video games came with paper manuals, and--in many cases—these manuals were full of cool art, bonkers worldbuilding, game tips, and extra creative details.
I didn’t remember Space Cavern at all when I popped it into my 2600+, but it turns out to be a pretty fun game! The manual has space dinosaurs, which are not in the game…but that’s OK, because the art is cool. And hey…anything is better than the complete lack of manuals we get today.

One-on-One Basketball, Julius “Dr. J” Irving vs Larry Bird, is a decent version of the classic game. The manual is okay—nothing wonderfully silly or amazingly creative here. Impossible Mission (Atari 7800) -- Game Manuals Were Cool
In the old days, video games came with paper manuals, and--in many cases—these manuals were full of cool art, bonkers worldbuilding, game tips, and extra creative details.
Impossible Mission on the 7800 is, well, Impossible – so I’ve heard. A bug keeps it from being beaten in the 7800. Also, the gameplay is really frustrating—particularly because your jump is a terrible forward somersault that does you no favors whatsoever. The manual, though, is pretty incredible. It’s completely bonkers—at times serious, and at times seriously silly. The villain hates space penguins, for goodness’ sake.
When it comes to game manuals, folks, they don’t make them like this anymore. (Or, at all, really.)
Enjoy!

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (Atari 2600) -- Game Manuals Were Cool
In the old days, video games came with paper manuals, and--in many cases—these manuals were full of cool art, bonkers worldbuilding, game tips, and extra creative details.
Far from the bum rap it gets in pop culture, E.T. is a pretty good Atari 2600 game. It has a lot of innovative game mechanics for its time, and the gameplay is impressively complicated.
But, a complicated game in the era of Centipede and Space Invaders meant that it could be obtuse and confusing for a lot of players.
Thankfully, the manual explained everything—and much of it is written from the point of view of the titular character (E.T. himself, who’s real name is apparently Zrek). Enjoy!

MRGPlays Impossible Mission (Atari 7800) -- Retro Let’s Play and Reminiscence
Impossible Mission has a lot going on. The story is bonkers. The gameplay involves puzzles, platforming, and codebreaking. The sound effects are full of bass and vinegar.
But there’s a problem: jumping absolutely sucks. Every time you jump, you do a dumb somersault that is hard to judge. when to jump over enemies and where to jump from in order to land in a certain spot. What’s worse is that some challenges are designed around this awful jump, making them needlessly frustrating, or even, dare I say, impossible.
I really wanted to like this one. Alas...
