Joe Miles - A Passion for Whitetail
If you know whitetails, you know Joe Miles. Joe is the founder of Asio Gear as well as the Mission Whitetail podcast.
Joe grew up hunting and when I say that, I am not exaggerating. He told me the story of waking up at 3 years old in a sleeping bag under a tree in the middle of the woods. Having no idea where he was, Joe felt something fall and hit him on the head. It was a piece of candy that his father, smiling ear to ear, had dropped from the tree. Joe killed his first buck at 5 years old and he's been chasing these beautiful animals ever since.
We talked about my rookie bowhunting season, Joe's renewed love of rut hunting, setting up and hunting true funnels, hunting southern swamps, and of course our successes and failures of 2023.
Joe hunts all over the world but his passion is whitetail hunting. He started ASIO Gear out of a passion for whitetail bowhunting. Joe is an over-the-top whitetail bowhunter of 30 years who was looking for a way to take his bowhunting to the next level. In the end, he created a never-before-seen camo pattern that he knew would do exactly that. In short, make him better at what he loved doing most.
Joe's goal for ASIO Gear was to create a high end whitetail hunting apparel line that could maximize bowhunters’ efficiency and effectiveness while bowhunting from a tree. ASIO Gear offers a camouflage pattern that has never been seen before. The ASIO RAPTOR CAMO® pattern was inspired by the feather pattern and blend of the most majestic of tree predators and master of camouflage, the owl.
ASIO is a pattern that works in the deep woods of the South just as well as the leaf-barren hardwoods of the Northeast in the winter. One of a kind, the ASIO RAPTOR CAMO® pattern blends perfectly in any tree, in any part of the whitetail range, giving bowhunters flexibility no matter where they roam.

Elkshape: Hustle & Grind
Dan Staton's Youtube Channel states .... " We love hard work and the flight of the arrow." That is a great summary of the way Dan Staton approaches his life and business. The Elkshape channel, and brand, has become one of the most influential in the hunting community. Dan and I discussed the recent release of his film 60 hrs to kick things off.
The film is covers his entire month of September archery Elk hunting. Rather than making a multiple episode season, Dan put all of his September into one film that is easy to digest. This ran the gamut of hunting for 25 days before he took a bull elk and then taking 2 in 2 days. From having his motorcycle break down in the field to realizing he had left his wallet at the gas station a week earlier, we had some laughs over his pain.
The backdrop to all of this, of course, is that hunting is HARD. As hunters we constantly have to overcome the difficulties that each day in the field throws at us. Those who can overcome not just the physical, but the mental stressors each day, are the hunters that see success year after year. As a new hunter, guys like Dan inspire me to constantly strive to be a better version of myself.
We also took time to talk about how a small experiment with YouTube in 2013 has turned into a serious brand in the hunting community and a career. Dan is an inspiration as a hunter, as a guy who trains hard to prepare himself, and as an entrepreneur. It was a real pleasure to sit down with Dan. He's a guy I would love to have the chance to hunt with some day and the kind of guy you would want in your foxhole if SHTF.
Dan, I appreciate you brother. Thank you

Bert Sorin: Be Legendary
Bert & I started talking the minute we hit the studio & before we started recording. Rather than go back and try to re-create, I just hit record so you will pick this up mid-conversation. We were on some good stuff so I just rolled with it. In this episode we explore the expansion of the SORINEX brand, the fundamentals of building a brand & scaling a business, and Bert's epic MuleDeer stalk in Utah.
Bert is currently the President and Co-Owner of Sorinex Exercise Equipment, a very successful family run business founded by his father, another big name in the iron game, Richard Sorin. Together they are the inventors of hardware and applications to make people more effective, efficient, and safe on the sports field and the battle field.
Growing up with a barbell in his hand, performance has been pivotal in charting the course of Bert Sorin's life and leading him to become a 4-time Division 1 All-American Track and Field (Hammer and 35 lb. Weight Throw), Southeastern Conference Champion, former record holder in Weight Throw, and an Olympic trials athlete.
As a new hunter, Bert has been an amazing mentor to me. He graciously met with me for lunch close to a year ago and much of my desire to take on bowhunting came from that meeting. Since then, Bert has answered way too many of my text messages & phone calls seeking his guidance on bow set-ups, how to scout land, set up trail cameras & pattern deer behavior. The list goes on & on. I can't express enough what a truly genuine person Bert is.
Although Bert never served in the arms forces, his gear is changing the game to provide readiness and rebuilding to the veterans prior to, during and after their deployments to far off, hostile lands. Bert’s network of veterans, scientists, coaches and therapists allows for a combination of expertise and support, and has been changing lives on both sides of the table. Bert pushes each day to find the best in people, and to assist in their exploration of their potential and maximize their value to the cause.
Bert and his wonderful wife Lesley are the proud parents of three children. The Sorin family is rooted in strength, both in the human performance world and at home.

Josh Smith: Forging a Brand Without Compromise
Josh Smith is the founder and CEO of Montana Knife Company, one of the most respected and fastest growing outdoor brands in the marketplace.
Josh is a master craftsman and as a boy learned to make custom knives. He became the youngest person ever to pass the Journeyman test at the age of 15 and at 19 became the youngest Master Smith in the world.
I am amazed at the tenacity and grit it took for Josh to manifest his vision over the course of 20 years into a highly respected and sought after brand. MCK knife-drops typically sell out in just a few hours. The latest drop, the Hellgate Hatchet, was one of the most anticipated and sold out in under 4 minutes.
Josh's long journey of making MKC a reality is very much like the process of developing a finely honed blade. You can't rush it and you have to be committed to the process. There are no shortcuts and no one is clapping for you when the hard work is being done. It takes a long time to create something so special that it generates not only a great product, but one that is in high demand.
There are a lot of people wondering how Montana Knife Company blew up overnight. The truth is that Josh Smith has been forging this brand for over 20 years without compromise.

Purpose and Hope. It is something that is such an integral part of our lives as young men and women but we often take it for granted. As we age any number of things can derail our hope and purpose. Financial failures, aging, injury and pain, or sometimes just the stress of life can all rob us of the vitality we knew in our youth. It takes more than just the desire to change. It takes hope and purpose. It is something I experienced and hope to help you find along the way.
