The narrative begins with Odin disguising himself as Gagnráðr and visiting the giant Vafþrúðnir. Odin challenges Vafþrúðnir to a wisdom contest, and they take turns asking each other questions. The questions cover various aspects of Norse cosmology, mythology, and the fate of the world. Odin, using his cunning, seeks to extract knowledge from Vafþrúðnir while revealing as little as possible about himself. The questions touch upon the creation of the world, the origins of gods and giants, and the ultimate fate of the cosmos, including the events leading up to Ragnarök. Vafþrúðnir displays impressive knowledge but eventually fails to answer one crucial question posed by Odin.
