Skírnismál (The Lay of Skírnir) | The Poetic Edda
Introductory Note by Carolyne Larrington | Second Introductory Note and Main Text Translated by Henry A. Bellows
Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice

Skírnismál focuses on the god Freyr's quest to win the hand of the giantess Gerðr, whom he sees from a distance and becomes infatuated with.

Freyr sitting on Odin's high seat, Hlidskjálf, from where he observes the giantess Gerðr in her dwelling. Smitten by her beauty, Freyr becomes consumed by desire and laments his unfulfilled love.

Freyr's servant, Skírnir, offers to undertake the quest to win Gerðr's hand for his master. Freyr lends Skírnir his magical horse and sword, and Skírnir embarks on the journey to Gerðr's abode.

Skírnir arrives at Gerðr's dwelling and attempts to convince her to marry Freyr. He uses both persuasive words and threats, promising her rich gifts and warning of the consequences if she refuses. Despite Skírnir's efforts, Gerðr remains unyielding.

Skírnir resorts to using a curse-spell, invoking powerful forces to influence Gerðr's emotions and force her to accept Freyr's proposal. The poem concludes with Skírnir returning to Freyr and delivering the news of Gerðr's reluctant agreement to marry him.

Skírnismál explores themes of love, desire, and the use of magic to achieve one's goals. The narrative highlights the lengths to which the gods are willing to go in pursuit of love and the challenges they face in dealing with beings from different realms.

The poem also provides insights into Norse mythology's cultural and social aspects, including the significance of marriage alliances, the use of magical artifacts, and the interplay between divine and mortal realms.

Skírnismál is a mythic poem that tells the story of Freyr's quest for love, with his servant Skírnir playing a crucial role in attempting to win the giantess Gerðr's hand through a combination of persuasion, promises, and magical influence.
