This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
The Epilogue
Having completed Chapter 51, treated as chapter 50, we will proceed with the last chapter (no.52 in the original text). It is here that Hemadpant wrote his concluding remarks and promised to provide an index giving the contents of all the chapters in verse, as is given in Marathi sacred books. Unfortunately, the index was not found in Hemadpant’s papers. It was therefore composed and supplied by an able and worthy devotee of Sai Baba, Mr. B.V. Deo (retired mamlatdar of Thana). As English books provide an index in the beginning with contents of each chapter, we will not consider the last index chapter here. Thus, the final chapter shall be regarded as the epilogue.
Unfortunately, Hemadpant did not survive to revise the last chapter’s manuscript to prepare it for press. When it was sent to the press, Mr. Deo found it to be incomplete and unintelligible in certain places, but it had to be published as it was found. The main topics dealt with therein are given below.
The Greatness of the Sadhguru Sai
We prostrate ourselves before Sai and take refuge in His grace, for it is He who besets all animate and inanimate things in the universe. It is He who pervades all creatures equally without differentiation. It is He for whom all devotees are equal and who knows not honor or dishonor, like nor dislike. If we remember Him and surrender to Him, He fulfills all our desires and leads us to the goal of life, Self-realization. The ocean of mundane existence is very hard to cross; Waves of infatuation beat high against the banks of bad thoughts, causing trees of fortitude to fall. The breeze of egoism blows forcibly and makes the ocean rough and agitated. Crocodiles in the form of anger and hatred roam fearlessly and eddies in the form of the ideas “I and mine” whirl incessantly. Innumerable fish in the form of censure, hatred and jealousy swim about. Although this ocean is so fierce and terrible, Sadhguru Sai is its agasti (destroyer) and the devotees of Sai have no fear of it. Our Sadhguru is the boat which will safely take us across this ocean.
Prayer
Let us worship Sai Baba, bow to His lotus feet, and say the following prayer: Let our mind not wander and wish for anything but Thee. Let this work, Shri Sai Satcharita, be in every house and let it be studied daily. Ward off the calamities of those who study it regularly. Om Shri Sai Ram.
Fala Shruti (reward of study)
Now a few words about the reward you get from a study of this work. After bathing in the sacred Godavari, and after taking the darshan of the samadhi in the samadhi mandir in Shirdi, you should read, or listen to the reading, of the Shri Sai Satcharitra. If you do this, all your threefold afflictions will vanish. Casually thinking about the stories of Sai, you will become interested in spiritual life and if you continue to read and study this work with love, all your sins will be destroyed. If you wish to be free from the cycle of births and deaths, read Sai’s stories and always remember Him. If you dive into the sea of Sai’s stories and then tell them to others, you will receive an ever new flavor of them and save the listeners from perdition.
If you go on meditating on Sai’s form, it will, in the course of time, disappear and lead you to Self-realization. It is very hard to realize the nature of the Self or Brahma, but if you approach the sagun form (physical form) of Brahma through the form of Sai, your progress will be easy. If the devotee completely surrenders himself to Him, he will lose his individuality and become merged in Him in all of the three states: when awake, sleeping and dreaming. Thus, he will be rid of the bond of samsar (worldly existence). If anyone, after bathing, reads Shri Sai Satcharita with love and faith, and completes it within a week (completes a saptaha), his calamities will disappear. If he hears or reads it daily and regularly, all his dangers will be warded off. By its study, a man striving for success in his life will achieve it, and the devotee striving for Self-realization, shall attain his goal. The reward will be according to the faith and devotion of the individual.
If the Shri Sai Satcharita is read respectfully, Sai will be pleased, and will remove your ignorance and poverty; blessing you with knowledge, serenity and prosperity.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
TThe Stories of:
Kakasaheb Dixit
Shri Tembye Swami
And Balaram Dhurandhar
Chapter 50 of the original Satcharitra has been incorporated in Chapter 39, as it dealt with the same subject matter. Now, Chapter 51 of the Satcharitra has been treated here as Chapter 50. This Chapter gives the stories of Kakasaheb Dixit, Shri Tembye Swami and Balaram Dhurandhar.
Preliminary
Victory be unto Sai Who is the sole refuge of His devotees and our Sadguru Who expounds the meaning of the Gita and gives us all powers. Oh Sai, look down favorably upon us and bless us all.
Sandal-wood trees grow on the Malaya Mountains and ward off heat; Clouds pour their rain-water and thereby cool and refresh everyone; Flowers blossom in the spring and enable us to offer them to God. Similarly, the stories of Sai Baba give solace and comfort to the readers. Both those who tell these stories and those who hear the stories of Baba, are blessed and holy.
It is a well-established spiritual fact that even though one may try hundreds of means, we do not attain the spiritual goal of life unless a Sadguru blesses us with his grace. Hear the following story in illustration of this statement.
Kakasaheb Dixit (1864-1926)
Mr. Hari Sitaram, alias Kakasaheb Dixit, was born in 1864 into a Brahmin family at Khandwa. His primary education was completed at Khandwa and his secondary education at Nagpur. He came to Bombay for his higher education and studied first in Wilson College and then in Elphinstone College. After graduation in 1883, he passed his LL.B. and the solicitor’s examination, and then worked in the firm of the Government Solicitors, Messrs Little and Co. Then after sometime, he started a solicitors’ firm of his own.
Before 1909, Kakasaheb did not know about Baba. But soon he became a great devotee. While he was living at Lonavala, he happened to meet his old friend, Mr. Nanasaheb Chandorkar. Both spent some time talking about many things. Kakasaheb described how, when he was boarding a train in London, he met with an accident in which his foot slipped and was injured. Hundreds of remedies had given him no relief. Nanasaheb then told him that if he wished to get rid of the pain and lameness of his leg, he should go to his Sadguru−Sai Baba. He also gave a detailed description of Sai Baba and mentioned to him Sai Baba’s dictum, “I draw to Me, My people, from even across the seven seas, like a sparrow with a string fastened to its feet.” He also made it clear to him that if he was not Baba’s man, he would not be attracted to Him and would not be given darshan. Kakasaheb was pleased to hear all this and said that he would go to Baba, see Him and pray to Him to cure not so much his lame leg, but to bring around his lame, fickle mind and give him eternal Bliss.
Sometime after this, Kakasaheb went to Ahmednagar and stayed with Sirdar Kakasaheb Mirikar, in connection with securing votes for a seat in the Bombay Legislative Council. Mr. Balasaheb Mirikar, Kakasaheb Mirikar’s son, who was a Mamalatdar at Kopergaon, was also in Ahmendnagar for a horse exhibition. After the election business was over, Kakasaheb Dixit wanted to go to Shirdi and the Mirikars were also thinking about a fit and proper guide with whom he should be sent there. Sai Baba was, at the same time, arranging things for his reception. Shama got a telegram from his father-in-law at Ahmednagar, stating that his mother-in-law was seriously ill and that he should come to see her with his wife. Shama, with Baba’s permission, went there and saw his mother-in-law and found her improving and better. Nanasaheb Panshe and Appasaheb Gadre happened to meet Shama on their way to the horse exhibition. Kakasaheb Dixit and the Mirikars were also informed of Shama’s arrival. In the evening, Shama visited the Mirikars, who introduced him to Kakasaheb. They arranged that Shama should leave for Kopergaon with Kakasaheb by the 10 O’clock night train. After this was settled, a curious thing happened; Balasaheb Mirikar removed the cover on Baba’s big portrait and showed it to Kakasaheb. Kakasaheb was surprised to see that He, Whom he was going to meet at Shirdi, was already there in the form of His portrait to greet him. He was greatly moved and prostrated before the portrait. This portrait belonged to Megha.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
The Stories of:
Hari Kanoba
Somadeva Swami
And Nanasaheb Chandorkar
Preliminary
The Vedas and the Puranas cannot sufficiently praise or describe Brahma or the Sadguru. Then how can we who are ignorant, describe our Sadguru, Shri Sai Baba? Thus, we feel that it is better for us to keep quiet in this matter. In reality however, the observance of the vow of silence is the best way of praising the Sadguru. But the divine qualities of Sai Baba make us forget our vow of silence and inspire us to open our mouths. Good dishes taste dull if our friends and relatives are not there to partake of the dishes with us. But when they join us, the dishes acquire additional flavor. The same is the case with the stories of Baba’s Leelas . We cannot partake of this nectar alone. Friends and brothers have to join us−the more the better.
It is Sai Baba Himself that inspires these stories and gets them written as He desires. Our duty is to surrender completely to Him and meditate on Him. Practicing penance is better than pilgrimage, taking vows, making sacrifices and charity. Worshipping The Lord is better than penance and meditation on the Sadguru is thus the best. Therefore, we should chant Sai’s name, think about His sayings, meditate on His form, feel real love for Him in our hearts and do all our actions for His sake and by His inspiration. There is no better means than this to terminate the bondage of samsar. If we do our duty, as stated above, Sai is bound to help and liberate us. Now we return to the stories of this chapter.
Hari Kanoba
A gentleman from Bombay named Hari Kanoba heard about Baba’s miracles from many of his friends and relatives. He did not believe them, as he was a “doubting Thomas”. He wanted to test Baba himself. So he came to Shirdi with a few friends from Bombay. He was wearing a lace-bordered turban on his head and a new pair of sandals on his feet. Seeing Baba from a distance, he wanted to go up and prostrate himself before Baba. He did not know what to do with his new sandals though. He went to a corner of the open courtyard, placed them there and went into the Masjid and received Baba’s darshan. He made a reverential bow to Baba, received some udi and prasad from Baba and returned. When he came back to the corner, he found that his sandals had disappeared. He searched for them in vain and returned to his lodging very dejected.
He bathed, prayed and offered naivedya and had his meals; but all he could think about was his sandals. After finishing his meals, he came out to wash his hands, when he saw a boy walking towards him. He had a stick in his hand, on top of which was suspended a pair of new sandals. The boy said to the men who had come out to wash their hands that Baba sent him with this stick and asked him to walk the streets shouting out loud, “Hari Ka Beta. Jari Ka Pheta” and told him that “If anybody claims these sandals are his, before you give him the sandals, assure yourself that his name is Hari, that he is the son of Ka( i.e., Kanoba) and that he wears a lace-bordered turban.” Hearing this, Hari Kanoba was astonished. He went to the boy and claimed the sandals. He said to the boy that his name was Hari and that he was the son of Ka (Kanoba) and showed him his lace-bordered turban. The boy was satisfied and returned the sandals to him. Hari Kanoba knew that his lace-bordered turban was visible to everyone and Baba might have seen it; However, how could Baba know his name was Hari and that he was the son of Kanoba, as this was his first trip to Shirdi? He came there with the sole object of testing Baba and with no other motive. He came to know by this incident that Baba was indeed a great soul. He got what he wanted and returned home very pleased...

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
The Stories of Mr.Shevade and The Sapatnekers
At the beginning of this chapter, someone asked Hemadpant whether Sai Baba was a Guru or a Sadguru. In order to answer the question, Hemadpant describes the signs or marks of a Sadguru:
The Signs of a Sadguru
A person who teaches us the Veda and Vedanta or the six Shastras (systems), controls his breath or brands his body with Mudras (metallic marks of Vishnu’s weapons), gives pleasing discourses regarding Brahma, gives mantras (sacred syllables) to his disciples and orders them to chant the same a certain number of times; and explains beautifully the Ultimate Principle, but has himself got no experience or self-realization, is not a Sadguru. But He, who through his discourse, creates in us distaste for the enjoyments of this world and the next, gives us a taste of self-realization and is well-versed in both theoretical and practical knowledge (of self-realization) deserves to be called a Sadguru. How can he, who is himself devoid of self-realization, help his disciples attain it? A Sadguru does not, even in his dreams, expect any service or profit from his disciples. On the contrary, he wishes to serve them; He does not think that he is great and the disciple small. Not only does he love them as his children, but regards them as equal to himself or Brahma. The main characteristic of a Sadguru is that he is the abode of peace. He is never restless or ruffled and has no pride of His learning. The poor and the rich, the small and the great, are all the same to him.
Hemadpant thinks that on account of the accumulation of merits in his past births, he had the good fortune of meeting and being blessed by such a Sadguru− Sai Baba. Even in his youth, Baba hoarded nothing (expect perhaps chillim). He had no family, friends, home or any support. Since He was eighteen, His control over His mind was perfect and extraordinary. Earlier in his life, He lived fearlessly in a secluded place and always abided in His Self. Seeing the pure attachment of His devotees, He always acted in their interests and hence He was in a way dependent on them. Experiences similar to the ones He gave His devotees while he was alive, are even today, after His Mahasamadhi, experienced by those who attach themselves to Him. What the devotees have to do is trim their heart’s lamp of faith and devotion and burn in it wicks of love and when this is done, the flame of knowledge (self-realization) will be lit and will shine brighter. Mere knowledge without love is dry; nobody wants such knowledge. Without love, there is no contentment and thus we should have unbroken and unbounded love. How can we praise love? Everything is insignificant before it; Without love, our reading, hearing and study are of no avail. In the wake of love follow devotion, dispassion, peace and liberation with all their treasures. We do not love anything unless we feel earnestly about it. So where there is real yearning and feeling, God manifests Himself.
Now let us revert to the main story of this chapter. If a man goes to a true saint with a pure mind or even fraudulently and holds his feet, ultimately he is sure to be saved. This is illustrated by the following stories.
Mr.Shevade
Mr. Sapatneker from Akkalkot was studying law. Mr.Shevade and a few other classmates met him and they all compared notes of their study. It was found through discussion about the subjects in the exam, that Mr.Shevade was the least prepared for the examination and therefore all the students derided him. But he said that though he was not prepared, he was sure to pass the examination, as Sai Baba was there to get him through it successfully. Mr.Sapatnekar was surprised at this remark; He took Mr.Shevade aside and asked him who this Sai Baba was, whom Shevade extolled so highly. Shevade replied, “There lives in a Masjid in Shirdi a fakir; He is a great soul. There may be other saints, but He is truly unique. Unless there is a great store of merits on one’s account, one can’t see Him. I fully believe in Him and what He says will never be untrue. He has assured me that I will definitely pass this year and I am confident that I will get through the final examination with His grace.” Mr.Sapatneker laughed at his classmate’s confidence and jeered at him and Baba....

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Story of Veerbhadrappa and Chenbassappa (the Snake and the frog)
Preliminary
Blessed is the face of our Lord Sai; If we cast a glance at Him for a moment, He destroys the sorrow of many past births and confers great bliss on us and if He looks at us with grace, our bondage of Karma is immediately destroyed and we are led to happiness. The river Ganges washes away the dirt and sins of everyone who goes to her for a bath, but she intently longs for the saints to come to her and bless her with their feet and remove all the dirt (sins) accumulated in her. She knows for certain that this accumulation can only be removed by the holy feet of the saints. Sai is the crest-jewel of the saints and now hear from Him the following purifying story.
The Snake and the Frog
Sai Baba once began to tell a story: “One morning, after having My breakfast, I strolled along till I came to the banks of a small river. As I was tired, I rested there, washed My hands and feet and had a bath and felt refreshed. There was a foot-path and a cart-track sheltered by shady trees and the breeze was blowing gently. As I was preparing to smoke my pipe, I heard the croaking of a frog. I was striking the flint and lighting the fire, when a traveler turned up, sat by My side, bowed to Me and politely invited Me to his house. He lit up the pipe and handed it over to Me. The croaking was heard again and he wanted to know what it was. I told him that a frog was in trouble and was suffering the bitter fruit of its own karma. We have to reap the fruit of what we sow (do) in our past life, and there is no use crying about it. Then he smoked and handed the pipe back to Me and said that he would go there in person and see for himself. I told him that a frog had been caught by a big snake and was crying for help. They were both very wicked in their past life and were now reaping the fruit of their actions in these bodies. He went out and found that a huge black serpent was holding a big frog in its mouth.
He returned and said that in a few minutes the frog would be eaten up by the snake. I said, ‘No, this can’t be! I am its father (protector) and I am here now; How can I allow the snake to eat the frog? Just see how I save it!’
After smoking again, we walked to the place. He was afraid and asked Me not to proceed further, as the snake might attack us. Not minding his words, I went ahead and addressed the creatures thus, ‘Veerbhadrappa! Has not your enemy Bassappa repented, despite being born as a frog? And you too, though born as a serpent, still maintain bitter enmity against him? Shame upon you! Give up your hatred and rest in peace!’
Hearing these words, the snake left the frog immediately and slithered into the river and disappeared. The frog also hopped away and hid itself in the bushes.
The traveler was very surprised; He said that he could not understand how the snake dropped the frog and disappeared when those words were said; who was Veerbhadrappa and who was Basssappa, and what was the cause of their enmity?

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Shama’s strip to Kashi, Prayag and Gaya, and how Baba (in the Form of His portrait) was there ahead of him.
It also describes Baba’s reminiscences of the past birth of two goats.
Preliminary
Blessed, Oh Sai, are Your Feet; blessed is Your remembrance and blessed is Your darshana which frees us from the bondage of Karma. Though Your Form is not visible to us now, if devotees believe in You, they receive divine experiences from You. By an invisible and subtle thread, You draw Your devotees from far and near to Your Feet and embrace them like a kind and loving mother. The devotees do not know where You are or what You want to accomplish, but You skillfully pull the wires so they ultimately realize that You are behind them to help and support them. The intelligent, wise and learned folk fall into the pit of samsar, on account of their egoism. But You save, through Your power, simple and devout persons. You invisibly play games but show that you are not concerned with them. You do things and yet pose as a spectator. Nobody can ever figure out reasons for Your actions; The best course therefore, is for us to surrender our body, speech and mind at Your Feet and always chant Your name, so as to destroy our sins. You fulfill the wishes of Your devotees and for those who are without any desires, You give bliss supreme. Chanting Your sweet name is the easiest means of salvation for Your devotees. Through this, our sins vanish, the Sattwa qualities and righteousness gain predominance. And discrimination, dispassion and knowledge are also attained. Thereby, we abide in our Self and our Guru (who are one and the same). This is what is called complete surrender to the Guru. The only sure sign of this is that our mind becomes calm and peaceful. The greatness of this surrender, devotion and knowledge is unique− for peace, non-attachment, fame and salvation follow it.
If Baba accepts a devotee, He follows him and stands by him, day and night. Let the devotee go anywhere he likes, Baba is there ahead of him in some form and in an inconceivable manner. The following story illustrates this.
Sometime after Kakasaheb Dixit was introduced to Sai Baba, he decided to perform the thread (Upanayan) ceremony of his eldest son, Babu, at Nagpur. At about the same time, Nanasaheb Chandorkar’s eldest son was getting married at Gwalior. Both Dixit and Chandorkar came to Shirdi and lovingly invited Baba for these events. Baba asked them to take Shama as His representative. When He was pressed to come in person, Baba told them to take Shama with them and said, “after visiting Banares and Prayag, I will be ahead of Shama.” Now mark these words, for they show Baba’s all-pervasiveness.
With Baba’s permission, Shama decided to go to Nagpur and Gwalior for these ceremonies and from there to Kashi, Prayag and Gaya. Appa Kote decided to accompany him. They both went first to Nagpur for the thread ceremony. Kakasaheb Dixit gave Shama 200 rupees for his expenses. Then they went to Gwalior for the marriage. There, Nanasaheb Chandorkar gave Shama 100 rupees and his relative, Mr.Jather, also gave him 100 rupees. Their next stop was Kashi and then Ayodhya, where they were well received in Jather’s beautiful temple of Laxmi-Narayan at Varanasi and in the Rama-Mandir at Ayodhya, by Jather’s manager. They stayed for 21 days in Ayodhya and two months in Banares. Then they left for Gaya; On the train, they were a little uneasy upon hearing that plague was raging in Gaya. At night, they alighted at the Gaya station and stayed in the local boarding house. In the morning, the Gayawala (the Priest who arranges and provides for the lodging and boarding of the pilgrims) came there and said, “The pilgrims have already started, you better come soon.” Shama casually asked him whether there was plague in Gaya. “No” said the Gayawala. “Please come without any fear or anxiety and see for yourself.” Then they went with him and stayed in his house which was a big and commodious Wada. Shama was pleased with the accommodation provided for him. However, what pleased him the most, was the large, beautiful portrait of Baba fixed in the central portion of the building. Seeing this portrait, Shama was overwhelmed with emotions. He remembered Baba’s words, “After visiting Kashi and Prayag, I will be ahead of Shama” and burst into tears.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Kakasaheb’s Doubt and Anandrao’s Vision;
And the Wooden Plank is Baba’s bed and not Bhagat’s;
Preliminary
In the last three chapters, we described Baba’s passing away. His physical or finite form has undoubtedly disappeared from our view, but the infinite or spiritual form always lives. We have largely spoken about the Leelas which occurred during His lifetime. However, even after He passed away, fresh Leelas have taken place and are even now happening. This clearly shows that Baba is always alive and continues to help His devotees. Those who met Baba when He was alive, were indeed very fortunate. But if any of them did not develop a dispassion for the material objects and enjoyments of this world and did not have their minds turned to the Lord, it was truly unfortunate. What was expected, then and now, is wholehearted devotion to Baba. All our senses, organs and mind should co-operate in worshipping and serving Baba. It is of no use if one engages some organs in worship and deflects the others. If worship or meditation is to be done, it ought to be done with all our mind and soul.
The love that a chaste woman bears for her husband is sometimes compared to that which a Guru has towards his disciples. Yet the former falls far short of the latter, which is incomparable. No one comes to our aid in attaining the goal of life (self-realization). We have to chalk out and traverse the path of self-realization ourselves. We have to discriminate between the Unreal and the Real, renounce the material enjoyments of this world and the next, control our senses and mind and aspire for liberation. Instead of depending upon others, we should have full faith in ourselves. When we begin to practice discrimination, we come to know that the world is transient and unreal, and thus our passion for worldly things decreases. Ultimately we attain complete dispassion or non-attachment for worldly objects. Then we realize that the Brahma, which is our Guru, is the sole reality. And as It transcends and besets the universe, we begin to worship It in all creatures. When we thus worship the Brahma or Guru wholeheartedly, we become one with Him and attain self-realization. In short, always chanting the name of the Guru and meditating on Him, enables us to see Him in all beings and confers eternal bliss on us. The following story will illustrate this.
Kakasaheb’s Doubt and Anandrao’s Vision
Sai Baba had instructed Kakasaheb Dixit to read from two works of Shri Ekanath—The Bhagawat and the Bhawartha Ramayana— every day. Kakasaheb read these daily while Baba was alive and followed the practice even after Baba’s passing away. Once, in Kaka Mahajani’s house in Bombay, Kakasaheb was reading the Ekanathi Bhagawat in the morning. Madhavarao Deshpande, alias Shama, and Kaka Mahajani were also there and listened attentively to the portion being read. In this portion, the nine Nathas or Siddhas of the Rishabha family− Kavi, Hari, Antariksha, Prabuddha, Pippalayan, Avirhotra, Drumil, Chamas and Karabhajan− expounded the principles of Bhagawat Dharma to King Janak. The latter asked all the nine Nathas very important questions and each of them answered these questions very well. The first, Kavi, explained what Bhagawat Dharma is; Hari, the characteristics of a devotee; Antariksha, what Maya is; Prabuddha, how to overcome Maya; Pippalayan, what Para-Brahma is; Avirhotra, what Karma is; Drumil, the incarnations of God and His deeds; Chamas, how a non-devotee fares after death; Karabhajan, the different modes of worship of God in different ages. The substance of all the exposition was that in this Kali age, the only means of liberation was remembering The Lord or the Guru’s feet. After the reading was over, Kakasaheb said in a despondent tone to Shama and the others, “How wonderful is this discourse about devotion by the nine Nathas. But at the same time, it is so difficult to put it into practice!

Baba’s Passing Away (Continued):
Preparation
Placing Baba in the Samadhi-Mandir
Breaking of the Brick
72 Hours’ Samadhi
Jog’s Sannyas
And Baba’s Nectar-like Words
Preparation
It is a general practice amongst Hindus that when a man is about to die, specific religious scriptures are read out to him, so that his mind is withdrawn from worldly things and is fixed on God. Thus, his future progress is natural and easy. When the king Parikshiti was cursed by the son of a Brahmin Rishi and was about to die a week later, the great sage Shuka expounded to him the famous Bhagwat Puran. This practice is followed even now and the Gita, Bhagawat and other sacred books are read out to dying persons.Since Baba was an incarnation of God, He needed no such help. But just to set an example for His people, He followed this practice. When He knew that He was to pass away soon, He ordered a man, Mr.Vaze, to read the Ramavijaya to Him. Mr.Vaze read the book once that week; Then Baba asked him to read the same book again day and night and he finished the second reading in three days. Thus, eleven days passed. Then he again read it to Baba for three days and was exhausted. So Baba let him go and continued to meditate. He abided in His Self and was waiting for the last moment.
Two or three days before his death, Baba had stopped His morning peregrinations and begging rounds, and remained in the Masjid. He was conscious till the end and was advising his devotees not to lose heart. He did not let anybody know the exact time of His departure. Kakasaheb Dixit and Bapusaheb Booty had been dining daily with Him in the Masjid. That day (the 15th of October) after the arati, He asked them to go to their houses and have lunch. Yet, a few devotees(Laxmibai Shinde, Bhagoji Shinde, Bayaji, Laxman Bala Shimpi, Shama and Nanasaheb Nimonkar) did not leave. Shama was sitting on the steps; After giving 9 rupees to Laxmibai Shinde, Baba said that He did not feel well there (in the Masjid) and that He should be taken to Booty’s stone Wada, where He would be alright. Saying these last words, He leaned on Bayaji’s body and breathed His last. Bhagoji noticed that His breathing had stopped and he immediately told Nanasaheb Nimonkar, who was sitting on the steps below. Nanasaheb brought some water and poured it into Baba’s mouth. It came out. Then he cried out loudly, “Oh Deva!” Baba appeared to open His eyes for a moment and say “Ah!” in a low tone. But it soon became evident that Baba had left His body for good.
Placing Baba in the Samadhi-Mandir
The news of Baba’s passing away spread like wildfire in the village of Shirdi and men, women and children ran to the Masjid and began to mourn His loss in various ways. Some cried out loudly, some wallowed in the streets and some fell down senseless. Tears ran from their eyes and everyone was smitten with sorrow.
Then the question arose: How were they to dispose of Baba’s body? Some Muslims said that the body should be interred in an open space with a tomb built over it. Even Khushalchand and Amir Shakkar shared this opinion. But Ramachandra Patil, the village officer, said to the villagers in a firm and determined voice, “Your thought is not acceptable to us; Baba’s body should be placed in the Wada.” Thus, people were divided in their opinion and discussion regarding this went on for about 36 hours.
On Wednesday morning, Baba appeared in Laxman Mama Joshi’s dreams and drawing him by His hand said, “Get up soon; Bapusaheb thinks that I am dead and so he won’t come; you do the worship and the morning arati.” Laxman Mama was the village astrologer and was Shama’s maternal uncle. He was an orthodox Brahmin and worshipped Baba first every morning and then worshipped all the other village deities. He had full faith in Baba; He came that morning with all the pooja materials and despite the protests of the moulvis(muslim priests), performed the Pooja and the arati with all due formalities, and then left.Previous Indication

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Previous Indication
Averting the Death of Ramachandra Dada Patil and Tatya Kote Patil
Charity to Laxmibai Shinde and the Last Moment.
This chapter describes Baba’s death.
Preliminary
The stories given in the previous chapter have shown that the light of the Guru’s grace destroys the fear of our mundane existence, opens up the path of salvation and turns our misery into happiness. If we always remember the feet of our Sadguru, our troubles come to an end, death loses its sting and the misery of this mundane existence is obliterated. Therefore, those who care for their welfare should carefully listen to these stories of Sai Samartha, which will purify their minds.
In the beginning of the original Chapter 42, Hemadpant dwells on Dr.Pandit’s worship and his marking Baba’s forehead with a Tripundra (three horizontal lines). But as this has already been described in chapter 11, it has been omitted here.
Previous Indication
The readers have till now heard the stories of Baba’s life. Let them now hear attentively about Baba’s passing away. Baba developed a mild fever on the 28th of September, 1918. The fever lasted for about 3 days, but after the fever subsided, Baba did not eat at all and thereby progressively grew weaker. On the 17th day, Tuesday, the 15th of October 1918, Baba left His mortal coil at about 2.30 p.m. (Vide Professor G.G. Narke’s letter, dated 5th November 1918, to Dadasaheb Khaparde, which was published in the Sai Leela magazine). Two years before this, in 1916, Baba gave an indication of His Passing away, but nobody understood it then. It was as follows: On the day of Dasara, Baba went into a wild rage in the evening, when people were returning from the Seemollanghan (ceremony of crossing the border of the village). He took off His head-dress, kafni and langota, tore them up and threw them in the Dhuni before Him. Fed by this offering, the fire in the Dhuni began to burn brighter and Baba shone even brighter. He stood there stark naked and with His eyes burning red shouted, “You fellows now have a look and decide whether I am a Muslim or a Hindu.” Everybody was trembling with fear and none dared to approach Baba. After some time, Bhagoji Shinde, the leper devotee, approached Him boldly and succeeded in tying a langota (waist-band) around His waist and said, “Baba, what is all this? Today is the Seemollanghan.” Baba striking the ground with His satka said, “This is my Seemollanghan (crossing the border).” Baba’s anger did not cool down until about 11.00 p.m. and people doubted whether the chavadi procession would ever take place that night. After an hour, Baba resumed His normal condition and dressing Himself as usual, attended the chavadi procession which was described previously. Through this incident, Baba gave a suggestion that Dasara was the proper time for Him to cross the border of life, but no one understood its meaning. Baba also gave another indication which was as follows:
Averting the Death of Ramachandra Dada and Tatya Patil
Sometime after this, Ramachandra Dada became seriously ill and suffered a lot. He tried all kinds of remedies, but was unable to find relief and was waiting for the last moment. One night, Baba suddenly appeared near his pillow; Dada held His Feet and said, “I have lost all hope of life, please tell me when I will die.” The merciful Baba said, “Don’t be anxious, your death-warrant has been withdrawn and you will soon recover. But I am afraid for Tatya Patil. He will pass away on Vijayadashami of Shaka 1840 (1918 A.D). Do not divulge this to anybody, for he will be terribly frightened.” Ramachandra Dada recovered, but he felt anxious about Tatya’s life, for he knew that Baba’s word was unalterable and that Tatya would breathe his last within two years. He only shared this secret with Bala Shimpi (a tailor and a devotee of Baba). Only these two persons− Ramachandra Dada and Bala Shimpi− were anxious about Tatya’s life.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Story of the Picture
And Stealing the Rags
Story of the Picture:
Nine years after the occurrence of the incident depicted in the last chapter, Ali Mahomed met Hemadpant and related the following story to him:
One day, while walking on the streets of Bombay, he bought the picture from a street vendor, framed it and hung it on a wall in his house at Bandra (a suburb of Bombay). As he loved Baba, he prayed before it daily. Three months before he gave the picture to Hemadpant, he was suffering from swelling on his leg, for which an operation was performed and he was recovering in the house of his brother-in-law, Mr. Noor-Mahomed Peerbhoy in Bombay. For three months, his house in Bandra was closed and nobody was living there. Only the pictures of the famous Baba Abdul Rahiman, Moulanasaheb Mahomed Hussain, Sai Baba, Baba Tajudin and other saints were there. The wheel of time did not even spare these. It seemed that the pictures also had their ins and outs (births and deaths). All the pictures met their fate, but how Sai Baba’s picture escaped it, nobody has been able to explain. It shows the all-pervasiveness, omnipresence and inscrutable power of Sai.
Ali Mahomed had once gotten a small picture of Saint Baba Abdul Rahiman from Mahomed Hussain Thariyatopan, many years ago. He gave it to his brother-in-law, Noor-Mahomed Peerbhoy, and it had been lying on Mr. Peerbhoy’s table for eight years. Once, the latter noticed it, took it to a photographer, got it enlarged and distributed copies of the same amongst his relatives and friends, including Ali Mahomed who hung it up it in his Bandra house. Noor-Mahomed was a disciple of Saint Abdul Rahiman and when he went to present the picture to his Guru in an open darbar, the Guru got very angry, chased him away and tried to beat him. He felt very sorry and dejected. He thought that he had lost his money and also incurred his Guru’s displeasure and anger. As his Guru did not like image worship, he took the enlarged picture and drowned it at sea. He requested friends and relatives to return their copies, and after getting them all back, had them thrown by a fisherman in the sea. At this time, Ali Mahomed was at his brother-in-law’s house. He was told by his brother-in-law that his suffering would come to an end if he drowned the pictures of the saints in the sea. Hearing this, Ali Mahomed sent his Manager to his Bandra house and got all the pictures of the saints thrown into the sea.
When Ali Mahomed returned home after two months, he was surprised to find Sai Baba’s picture on the wall, exactly where he had left it. He did not understand how his Manager had taken away all the pictures except this one. He immediately took it off the wall and kept it in his cupboard, fearing that if his brother-in-law saw it, he would do away with it. While he was thinking about how it should be disposed and who would keep it well, Sai Baba providentially suggested that he should see and consult Moulana Ismu Mujavar and abide by his opinion. He met the Moulana and told him everything. After thoughtful consideration, they both decided that the picture should be presented to Annasaheb (Hemadpant) and that he would protect it well. Then they both went to Hemadpant and presented the picture in the nick of time.
This story shows how Baba knew the past, present and future and how He skillfully pulled wires and fulfilled the desires of His devotees. The following story shows that Baba liked people who took real interest in spiritual matters, very much; He eliminated all their difficulties and made them happy.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Attending Mrs.Deo’s Udyapan Ceremony as a Sannyasi with two others;
And visiting Hemadpant’s House in the form of a picture
Preliminary
Blessed is Shri Sai Samartha who gives his devotees instructions in both temporal and spiritual matters, and makes them happy by enabling them to achieve the goal of their life. When Baba places His hand on their heads, He transfers His powers to them and thus destroys the sense of differentiation and makes them attain that Unattainable Thing. He embraces devotees who prostrate themselves before Him, with no sense of duality or difference. He becomes one with devotees, the way the rivers merge with the sea and gives them His power and position.
Mrs.Deo’s Udyapan Ceremony
Mr.B.V.Deo was a Mamlatdar in Dahanu (a town in the Thana District). His mother had observed 25 or 30 different vows and an Udyapan (concluding) ceremony was to be performed. This ceremony included the feeding of about 200 Brahmins. Mr.Deo set a date for the ceremony and wrote a letter to Bapusaheb Jog, asking him to request Sai Baba to attend the ceremony. He wrote that without Baba’s attendance, the ceremony would not be duly completed. Bapusaheb Jog read Baba the letter. Baba carefully noted the pure-hearted invitation and said, “I always think of him who remembers Me; I require no conveyance, carriage, train or aeroplane. I run and manifest myself to anyone who lovingly calls me. Write him a reply that the three of us— you, Me and a third person — will attend.” Mr.Jog informed Deo of what Baba said. The latter was very pleased, but he knew that Baba never went to any place except Rahata, Rui and Nimgaon in person. He also knew that nothing was impossible for Baba, as He was all-pervading and that He might suddenly come, in any form He likes, and fulfill his promise.
A few days before the Udyapan, a Sannyasi, professing to work for the cause of the protection of cows, came to the Station Master at Dahanu to collect subscriptions. The latter told him to go into town and see the Mamlatdar (Mr.Deo) and with his help collect funds. Just then, the Mamlatdar happened to come there. The Station Master introduced the Sannyasi to him, and Mr.Deo and the Sannyasi then sat and talked on the station platform. Mr.Deo told him that a donation list for some other charitable cause had already been started by another prominent citizen, and thus it would not be appropriate to start another donation list right away. He told the Sannyasi that it would be better if he came back after a few months. The Sannyasi left, promising to return.
On the day of the ceremony, the Sannyasi came in a tanga that stopped in front of Mr.Deo’s house at about 10 a.m. Deo thought that he had come to discuss the donations. Seeing him busy with the preparations for the ceremony, the Sannyasi said that he had not come for money but for meals. Deo said, “Alright, we are very glad and you are welcome; the house is yours.” The Sannyasi then said, “There are two lads with me.” Deo, “Please bring them too” As there were still 2 hours till lunch, Deo inquired where he should send for them. The Sannyasi said that it was not necessary, as they would come at the appointed time. Deo asked him to come at noon. Exactly at noon, the Trio arrived, had their meals and left.
After the ceremony was over, Deo wrote a letter to Bapusaheb Jog complaining of Baba’s breach of promise. Jog went to Baba with the letter, but before it was opened, Baba spoke, “Ah! He says that I promised to come but deceived him. Inform him that I did attend his ceremony with two others, but he failed to recognize Me. Then why did he invite me in the first place? Tell him that he thought that the Sannyasi had come to ask for subscription money; Did I not clear his doubts in that respect and did I not say that I would come with two others? And didn’t the Trio come on time and have their meals? See, to keep My word I would even sacrifice my life; I would never be untrue to My words.” This reply gladdened Jog’s heart and he communicated Baba’s entire reply to Deo. As soon as Deo read it, he burst into tears of joy, but he took himself to task mentally, for vainly blaming Baba. He wondered how he was deceived by the Sannyasi’s prior visit and his coming to him for donations, and how he also failed to catch the significance of the Sannyasi’s word...

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Baba’s Handi
Disrespect of a Shrine
Kala or Hodge-Podge
Hemadpant’s Cup of Butter-Milk.
Preliminary
Oh, blessed Sadguru Sai, we bow to You; you have given happiness to the whole world, safeguarded the welfare of Your devotees and have destroyed the afflictions of those who have resorted to Your Feet. You are very liberal and the protector and savior of devotees who surrender themselves to You; You incarnate yourself in this world to oblige people and do them good. The liquid essence of the Pure Self was poured into the mold of Brahma and out of this has come the crest-jewel of the saints−Sai. This Sai is Atmarama Himself; He is the abode of perfect divine bliss. Having Himself attained all the objects of life, He made His devotees desire-less and free.
Baba’s Handi
Different sadhanas (means of spiritual accomplishment) are prescribed in our scriptures for different ages. Tapa (Penance) is recommended for the Krita age, Jnana (Knowledge) for the Treta age, Yajna (Sacrifice) for the Dwapara age and Dana (Charity) for the Kali (current) age. Of all the forms of charity, giving food is the best. We are very perturbed when we have no food and are hungry. Other beings feel similarly under similar circumstances. Thus, he who gives food to the poor and hungry is in fact the best donor. The Taittiriya Upanishad says that “Food is Brahma; from food all creatures are born, by food they live, and having departed, into food they again enter.” When an uninvited guest comes to our door at noon, it is our bounden duty to welcome him by giving him food. Other kinds of charity− giving away wealth, property and clothes− require some discrimination. But in the matter of food, no such consideration is necessary. Let anybody come to our door at noon, he should be served forthwith; and if lame, crippled, blind and diseased paupers come, they should be fed before the able-bodied. Other kinds of charity are imperfect without the giving of food; just as stars are without the moon, a necklace is without its central pendant or singing is without a sweet voice. The giving of food is thus the best form of charity. It has been stated before that Baba required very little food for Himself and what little He needed was obtained by begging from a few houses. But when He decided to distribute food to everyone, He made all the preparations from beginning to end, all by Himself. He did not depend on anybody and did not trouble anyone in this matter. First He went to the bazaar and bought all the things he needed− corn, flour, spices etc. He also did the grinding himself; In the open courtyard of the Masjid, He arranged a big hearth and after lighting a fire in it, placed a Handi(cooking pot) over it with a proper measure of water. There were two kinds of Handi— one small and the other big; the former provided food for 50 people, while the latter could serve a 100. Sometimes He cooked Mitthe Chaval (sweet rice) and at other times Pulav with meat. At times, in the boiling varan (soup), He added small balls of thick or flat breads of wheat flour. He pounded the spices on a stone-slab and put the thin pulverized spices into the cooking-pot. He took all the pains possible to make the dishes very palatable. He prepared Ambil by boiling jawari-flour in water and mixing it with butter-milk. He served this Ambil with the food to everyone. To see whether the food was properly cooked or not, Baba rolled up the sleeves of His Kafni and put His bare arm in the boiling cauldron, without the least fear, and stirred the whole pot of food. There were no burn marks on His arm or fear on His face. When the cooking was complete, Baba got the pots in the Masjid duly consecrated by the moulvi(muslim priest). First, He sent some of the food as prasad to Mhalasapati and Tatya Patil and then He served the remaining contents, with His own hands, to all the poor and helpless people to their hearts’ content. Blessed and fortunate indeed were those people who got food prepared by Baba and served by Him.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Baba’s Knowledge of Sanskrit
His Interpretation of a Verse from the Gita
And the Construction of the Samadhi Mandir
Some believed that Baba did not know Sanskrit and Hemadpant wrote another chapter (chapter 50) refuting that notion. As that chapter deals with the same subject matter, it is incorporated into this chapter.
Preliminary
Blessed is Shirdi, blessed is the Dwarkamayi where Shri Sai lived; And blessed are the people of Shirdi whom He obliged and for whom He traveled such a long distance. Shirdi was a small village at first, but it attained great importance on account of His contact and became a Tirtha− a holy place of pilgrimage. Equally blessed are the womenfolk of Shirdi; blessed is their whole and undivided faith in Him. They sang the glories of Baba while bathing, grinding, pounding corn and doing other household work. Blessed is their love, for they sang sweet songs which calm and pacify the minds of the singers and listeners.
Baba’s Interpretation
Nobody believed that Baba knew Sanskrit. One day, He surprised everyone by providing a good interpretation of a verse from the Gita, to Nanasaheb Chandorkar. A brief account about this matter was written by Mr.B.V.Deo, Retired Mamlatdar, and published in Marathi in the Shri Sai Leela magazine. Short accounts of the same are also published in Sai Baba’s Charters and Sayings and in The Wondrous Saint Sai Baba, both by B.V.Narsimhaswami. Mr.B.V.Deo has also written an English version of this in his statement dated 27th September 1936. As Mr.Deo had first-hand information about this matter from Nanasaheb himself, his version is given below:
“Nanasaheb Chandorkar was an avid student of the Vedanta. He had read the Gita with its commentaries and prided himself on his knowledge in that domain. He fancied that Baba knew nothing of all this or of the Sanskrit language. So Baba one day pricked that bubble. These were the days before crowds flocked to Shirdi, when Baba had solitary talks at the Masjid with a few devotees. Nana was sitting near Baba and was massaging His Legs and mumbling something to himself.
Baba: Nana, what are you mumbling to yourself?
Nana: I am reciting a verse in Sanskrit.
Baba: What verse?
Nana: It’s from the Bhagawad-Gita
Baba: Say it out loud.
Nana then recited B.G.IV-34 which is as follows:
Tadviddhi Pranipatena Pariprashnena Sevaya,
Upadekshyanti Te Jnanam Jnaninastattwadarshinah
Baba: Nana, do you understand it?
Nana: Yes.
Baba: If you do, then tell me what it means.
Nana: It means, “By Sashtanga Namaskar (prostration), questioning the guru and by serving him, learn what Jnana is. Then, those Jnanis who have attained the real knowledge of the Sad-Vastu (Brahma) will give you upadesha (instruction) about Jnana.”
Baba: Nana, I do not want this sort of summary of the whole stanza. Give me each word, its grammatical force and meaning.
Then Baba made Nana explain it word by word.
Baba: Nana, is it enough to merely prostrate?
Nana: I do not know any other meaning of the word “pranipata” other than “prostrating”.
Baba: What is pariprashna?
Nana: Asking questions.
Baba: What does Prashna mean?
Nana: The same (asking questions).
Baba: If pariprashna means the same as prashna (question), why did Vyasa add the prefix ‘pari‘? Was Vyasa out of his mind?
Nana: I do not know of any other meaning for the word pariprashna.
Baba: Seva, what kind of seva is being referred to?
Nana: Service- the kind we always do.
Baba: Is it enough to just render such service?
Nana: I do not know what more is signified by the word seva.
Baba: In the next line “upadekshyanti te jnanam“, can you replace the word Jnanam with any other word?
Nana: Yes.
Baba: What word?
Nana: Ajnanam.
Baba: Using that word (instead of Jnanam) can any meaning be made out of the verse?
Nana: No, the rules of the language give no such construction.
Baba: Never mind if it does not. Is there any objection to using the word Ajnana, if it gives a better sense?
Nana: I do not understand how to interpret it by placing Ajnana in it.
Baba: Why does Krishna ask Arjuna to see Jnanis or Tattwadarshis and to prostrate before them and serve them? Was not Krishna a Tattwadarshi, in fact a Jnani, himself?
Nana: Yes He was. But I cannot understand why he referred Arjuna to other Jnanis?
Baba: Have you not understood this?.....

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
In this chapter, Hemadpant describes the Chavadi procession.
Preliminary
Blessed is Sai’s life and His daily routine; His ways and actions are indescribable. At times, He was intoxicated with Brahmanand (divine joy) and at other times content with knowledge of the self. Despite doing so many things, He was not concerned with them at all. Though He seemed at times physically motionless, He was not idle or asleep. He always abided in His own Self. Though He looked as calm and quiet as the placid sea, He was deep and unfathomable. Who can describe His ineffable nature? He regarded men as brothers and women as sisters and mothers. He was a perfect and perpetual celibate. May the knowledge we got through His acquaintance last us unto our death. Let us always serve Him with wholehearted devotion to His feet. Let us see Him (God) in all beings and let us always love His name.
Hemadpant, after making some lengthy dissertations on some topics in the Vedanta, which he himself considers a digression, goes on to describe the Chavadi procession.
The Chavadi Procession
Baba’s dormitory has already been described. Every alternate day, he slept in the Chavadi (a small building containing a room or two near the Masjid). This alternate sleeping routine in both these buildings continued till Baba’s Mahasamadhi. From the 10th of December 1909, devotees began to worship Baba in the Chavadi. We will now describe this, with His grace. When it was a night that Baba would be spending in the Chavadi, people flocked to the Masjid and sang bhajans in the courtyard of the Masjid for a few hours. Behind them was a beautiful Ratha (small horse-drawn cart), to the right a Tulsi-vrindavan (a decorative structure with a Tulsi plant in it) and in front of Baba, devotees who were fond of singing devotional songs. Some played on various musical instruments while singing. Sai Baba was the magnet Who drew all the devotees to Him. Outside the courtyard, some held their torches, some decorated the palanquin, while others stood with canes in their hands and shouted out cries of victory to Baba. The corners of the Masjid were decorated with buntings. All around the Masjid, rows of burning lamps shed their light. Baba’s horse, Shyamakarna, stood fully decorated outside. Then Tatya Patil came with a party of men to Baba and asked Him to be ready. Baba sat quietly in his place till Tatya came and helped Him to get up, by putting his arm under Baba’s arm-pit. Tatya called Baba, Mama(maternal uncle); In reality, their relationship was extremely close. Baba wore the usual kafni(long robe), placed His short stick under His arm-pit and after picking up His tobacco-pipe and tobacco, and placing a cloth over His shoulder, was ready to start. Then Tatya draped Baba in a beautiful golden-embroidered shawl. After this, Baba moved the bundle of firewood lying behind him, with His right toe. And then, after extinguishing the burning lamp with His right hand, started for the Chavadi. Then all sorts of musical instruments played and fireworks exhibited their different colors and sounds. Men and women singing Baba’s name started walking and singing bhajans to the accompaniment of musical instruments. Some danced with joy and some carried various flags. Men announced Baba’s name when He stood on the steps of the Masjid. To either side of Baba, stood persons who fanned Baba with large hand fans. The path on which Baba walked was covered with layers of cloth. Tatya held His left hand and Mhalasapati the right, while Bapusaheb Jog held a decorative umbrella over His head. In this fashion, Baba marched on to the Chavadi. The fully decorated horse, Shyamakarna, led the way and behind him were all the carriers, waiters, musicians and the crowd of devotees. Hari-nama (the name of the Lord), chanted to the accompaniment of music, filled the skies, as also did the name of Sai. In this manner, the procession reached the corner, when all the persons that joined this party seemed pleased and delighted.
On reaching this corner, Baba stood facing the Chavadi and shone with a peculiar luster. It seemed as if Baba’s face glittered like dawn or like the glory of the rising sun.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
The wonderful Stories of the two gentlemen from Goa
And Mrs. Aurangabadkar;
The Two Gentlemen
Two men came from Goa to receive Baba’s darshan and prostrated themselves before him. Though both came together, Baba asked only one of them to give Him 15 rupees as Dakshina, which was paid willingly. The other man voluntarily offered 35 rupees and this sum was rejected by Baba, to everyone’s astonishment. Shama, who was present, asked Baba, “What is this? Both came together, one’s Dakshina you accept, the other, though voluntarily paid, you refuse; Why this distinction?” Baba replied, “Shama, you know nothing. I take nothing from anybody. The Masjidmayi (The presiding Deity of the Masjid) calls for the debt and the donor pays it and becomes free. Have I any home, property or family to look after? I require nothing and am always free. Debt, enmity and murder have to be atoned for; there is no escaping them”. Baba then continued to tell a story in His characteristic way:
“At first he was poor and vowed to his God that he would give away his first month’s salary if he got hired. He got a job which paid 15 rupees per month. Then he steadily got promotions; he later earned Rupees 30, 60, 100, 200 and ultimately 700 per month. But amidst his prosperity, he completely forgot the vow. The force of his karma has driven him here and thus I asked for that amount (15 rupees) from him as Dakshina.”
“Another story: While wandering by the sea-side, I came to a huge mansion and sat on its verandah. The owner was hospitable and fed me sumptuously. He gave me a neat and clean place near a cupboard to sleep and I slept there. While I was sound asleep, the man removed a slab and broke the wall, entered my room and stole all the money in my pocket. When I woke up, I found that 30,000 rupees had been stolen from my pocket. I was very distressed and sat weeping and moaning. The money was in currency notes and I knew the man had stolen it. I lost all interest in food and sat for a fortnight on the verandah, bemoaning my loss. After a fortnight, a passing fakir saw me crying and asked me why I was crying. I told him everything; He said, ‘If you act according to what I tell you, you will recover your money. Go to a fakir, I shall give you his whereabouts, surrender yourself to him; he will get your money back. In the meanwhile, give up your favorite food till you recover your money.’ I followed the fakir’s advice and got my money back. Then I left the mansion and went to the sea-shore. I found a steamer that was ready to leave, but I could not get into it as it was crowded. Then, a good-natured peon interceded for me and I was luckily able to board it. That brought me to another shore, where I boarded a train and came to the Masjidmayi.”
Baba finished telling the story and asked Shama to take the guests and arrange for their meals. Then Shama took them home and served them dinner. At dinner, Shama said that Baba’s story was rather mysterious, as He had never been to the sea, never had any money, never traveled, never lost any money or recovered it, and enquired whether they had understood it and caught its significance. The guests were deeply moved and were shedding tears. In a choking voice, they said that Baba was omniscient, infinite and the One (Para Brahma). They said that the stories He told were their stories; What He spoke had already taken place in their case. How Baba knew all this was truly divine!
Then after the meal, while they were chewing betel-leaves, the guests began to tell their stories. The first one said,
“A hill-station on the ghats is my native place. I went to Goa to earn a living and I took a vow to God Datta, that if I got a job I would offer Him my first month’s salary. By His grace, I got a job that paid 15 rupees and then steadily got promotions as described by Baba. I forgot all about my vow. Baba has just reminded me of it in this way and recovered 15 rupees from me. It is not Dakshina as one may think it to be, but repayment of an old debt and fulfillment of a long-forgotten vow”
Baba never actually begged for any money or allowed His Bhaktas to beg. He regarded money as a danger or bar to spiritual progress and did not allow His Bhaktas to fall into its clutches.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Tested and Never Found Wanting:
Kaka Mahajani’s Friend and Boss
The Insomnia Case
Bala Patil Newaskar
This Chapter also continues the subject of the importance of Udi and it also gives two cases in which Baba was tested and not found wanting.
Preliminary
In spiritual matters or endeavors, sectarianism is the greatest bar to our progress. Those who believe that God is formless, are heard saying that to believe that God has a form is an illusion and that Saints are merely human. Then why should they bow before these Saints and offer Dakshina? Persons belonging to other sects will also raise objections and say, “Why should we bow and offer allegiance to other Saints, since we have our own Sadgurus?” Similar objections regarding Sai Baba have been heard before and are heard even now. Some said that when they went to Shirdi, Baba asked for Dakshina from them; “Is it good that Saints should collect money in this fashion? If they do so, where is their Sainthood?” they asked. But there are many instances where men went to Shirdi to scoff, but remained there to pray. Two such instances are given below.
Kaka Mahajani’s Friend
A friend of Kaka Mahajani’s was a devotee of God without form and was averse to idolatry. Out of curiosity, he agreed to go to Shirdi with Kaka Mahajani on two conditions: That he would neither bow to Baba nor pay Him any Dakshina. Kaka agreed to these conditions and they both left Bombay on a Saturday night and reached Shirdi the next morning. As soon as their feet touched the steps of the Masjid, Baba, looking at the friend from a distance, addressed him with sweet words, “Oh, welcome sir!” The voice in which he said these words was a very peculiar one. It resembled the voice of the friend’s father. It reminded him of his departed father and sent a joyous thrill through his body. What an enchanting power the voice had! Rather surprised, the friend said, “This is no doubt the voice of my father”. Then he went up and forgetting his resolution, placed his head upon Baba’s Feet.
Then Baba asked for Dakshina from Kaka twice, once in the morning and again at noon. The friend whispered to Kaka, “Baba asked for Dakshina from you twice; I am with you, yet why does He omit me?” “Why don’t you ask Baba Himself” was Kaka’s reply. Baba asked Kaka what his friend was whispering and then the friend asked Baba himself whether he should pay any Dakshina. Baba replied, “You had no mind to pay, so you were not asked; but if you want to pay now you may.” Then the friend paid 17 Rupees as Dakshina, the same amount that Kaka paid. Baba then addressed him with a few words of advice, “You do away with and destroy the wall (sense of difference) between us, so that we can see and meet each other face to face”. Then Baba allowed them to depart; Though the weather was cloudy and threatening, Baba assured them of their safe journey and both of them reached Bombay safely. When he reached home and opened the doors and windows of his house, he found two sparrows had fallen dead on the floor and one flew out through a window. He thought that if he had left the windows open, two sparrows would have been saved, but thought about it again and realized that they had met their fate and that Baba had sent him back soon enough to save the third sparrow.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
The Greatness of Udi (continued):
The Doctor’s Nephew
Dr. Pillay
Shama’s Sister-in-Law
The Iranian Girl
The Gentleman from Harda
And the lady from Bombay
The Doctor’s Nephew
There was a Doctor who lived in a place called Malegaon. His nephew suffered from an incurable disease− tubercular bone abscess− and the doctor and his brothers, who were also doctors, tried all sorts of remedies and even an operation. All this did not give the boy any relief and there seemed to be no end to the little boy’s suffering. Friends and relatives advised the parents of the boy to seek divine aid and recommended them to try Sai Baba, who was known to have cured such incurable cases by His mere glance. The parents therefore came to Shirdi and prostrated themselves before Baba. They placed the boy before Him and pleaded humbly and respectfully, and implored Baba to save their son. The merciful Baba comforted them saying, “Those who resort to this Masjid shall never suffer anything in this life and till the end of time. Be care-free now; apply Udi on the abscess and within one week he will recover. Believe in God; This is not a Masjid, but a Dwarawati (a celestial doorway). He who steps in will soon get health and happiness and his sufferings will come to an end”. The boy was placed before Baba, Who touched the affected part and cast His loving glances on the boy. The patient was pleased and with the application of Udi, he began to recover and was completely cured within a few days. The parents then left Shirdi with their son, thanking Baba for the cure; This cure was through Udi and Baba’s divine grace.
After learning about all this, the doctor was wonderstruck and wanted to receive Baba’s darshan, while he was on his way to Bombay for some business. But at Malegaon and Manmad, somebody spoke to him about Baba and poisoned his ears. He therefore dropped the idea of visiting Shirdi and went to Bombay directly. He wanted to spend the rest of his vacation at Alibag, but at Bombay he heard (on three successive nights), a voice crying out, “You still don’t believe me?” Then the doctor changed his mind and resolved to go to Shirdi. He had to attend to a case of viral fever in Bombay, which showed no signs of abatement. So he thought that his Shirdi trip would be postponed. He however proposed a test in his mind and said, “If the patient gets better today, I shall start for Shirdi tomorrow.” The amazing thing was that exactly at the time he proposed the test in his mind, the patient’s fever began to abate and the patient’s temperature soon became normal. Then he went to Shirdi with Baba’s grace, received Baba’s darshan and prostrated himself before Baba. He stayed there for four days and returned home with Baba’s Udi and blessings. His nephew’s case had given him an opportunity to see Baba and this gave him ever-lasting love for Baba’s feet.
Dr. Pillay
Dr. Pillay was a devotee who was very close to Baba. He was well-liked by Baba, Who always called him Bhau (brother). Baba spoke to him regularly, consulted him in all matters and always wanted him by His side. Pillay once suffered very badly from guinea-worms. He said to Kakasaheb Dixit, “The pain is so excruciating and unbearable; I prefer death to it. I know this pain is to repay my past Karma. But please go to Baba and tell Him to stop the pain and transfer the repayment of my past Karma to ten future births of mine.” Dixit went to Baba and told Him of Pillay’s request. Then Baba, moved by his request, said to Dixit, “Tell him to be fearless; Why should he suffer for ten births? In ten days, he can work out the suffering and consequences of his past Karma. When I am here to take care of his temporal and spiritual welfare, why should he pray for death? Bring him here on somebody’s back and let us work and finish his sufferings once and for all”.
Dr. Pillay was brought in that condition and was seated to the right of where Baba was seated. Baba gave Pillay His pillow and said, “Lie calmly here and be at ease. The true remedy is that the results of our past actions have to be suffered through. Our Karma is the cause of our happiness and sorrow; therefore put up with whatever comes to you.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
The Greatness of Udi:
Scorpion Stings and Plague Cases Cured
The Jamner Miracle
Narayanarao’s Sickness
Balabuva Sutar
Appasaheb Kulkarni
And Haribhau Karnik.
Preliminary
Let us now bow before the great saints; Their merciful glances will destroy mountains of sins and do away with all the evil streaks in our character. Their casual talk gives us valuable lessons and confers on us imperishable happiness. Their minds do not know any difference such as “This is ours and that is yours.” Such differentiation never arises in their minds. Our obligation to them will never be repaid by us in this birth as well as in many future births to come.
Udi
It is well-known that Baba asked for or received Dakshina from devotees who visited Him. And out of the amount thus collected, He spent a lot on charity and purchased fuel with the remaining amount. He fed this fuel into the Dhuni−the sacred fire which he always kept burning. The ash from this fire was called Udi and it was freely distributed to the devotees at the time of their departure from Shirdi.
What did Baba teach by this Udi? Baba taught us that all the visible phenomena in the universe is as transient as ash. Our bodies, composed of the five elements, will perish after all the worldly enjoyments are over and will be reduced to ashes. In order to remind the devotees of this, Baba distributed Udi to them. Baba also taught, through Udi, that the Brahman is the only Reality, that the universe is ephemeral and that no one in this world—son, father or wife— is really ours. We come into this world alone and we have to leave alone. While Udi also cured many physical and mental maladies, Baba wanted to teach his devotees the principles of discrimination between the Unreal and Real and non-attachment for the Unreal. The Udi taught us discrimination and Dakshina taught us detachment. Unless we have these two things, it is not possible for us to cross over the sea of mundane existence. So Baba asked for and received Dakshina, and when the devotees took leave, He gave them Udi as Prasad, besmeared some of it on their foreheads and placed His boon-conferring hand on their heads. When Baba was in a cheerful mood, He used to sing merrily; One of the songs he sang was about Udi. The chorus of that song was, “Oh playful Rama, come and bring with you sacks of Udi.” Baba used to sing this song in a very clear and sweet tone.
Udi also had its material significance; It conferred health, prosperity, freedom from anxiety and many other worldly gains. Thus, Udi helped us to gain both our ends−material as well as spiritual. Inspired by Baba, we shall now begin to tell you the stories about Udi.
The Scorpion-Sting
Narayan Motiram Jani of Nasik was a devotee of Baba. He was working for another devotee of Baba, named Ramachandra Vaman Modak. Once, he went to Shirdi with his mother and saw Baba. Then Baba told the mother that her son should not work for anyone and should start his own business. A few days after this, Baba’s prophecy came true; Narayan Jani quit his job and started a boarding house, which later thrived.
Once, a friend of Narayanrao’s was stung by a scorpion and the pain caused by it was severe and unbearable. Udi is very efficacious in such cases and should be applied to the area of pain. So Narayanrao searched for it, but found none; Then he stood before Baba’s picture, invoked Baba’s aid, chanted Baba’s name and taking a pinch of the ashes of the incense burning in front of Baba’s picture and thinking it to be Baba’s Udi, he applied it to the area that had been stung. As soon as he applied it, the pain vanished and both persons were moved and were grateful to Baba.
The Bubonic Plague Case
A devotee in Bandra came to know that his daughter, who was living in another place, was down with bubonic plague. He had no Udi with him, so he sent word to Nanasaheb Chandorkar to send the same. Nanasaheb got this message on a road near the Thana Railway Station, when he was travelling with his wife to Kalyan. He had no Udi with him at the time. He therefore took some earth from the road, meditated upon Sai Baba, invoked His aid and applied it to the forehead of his wife.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
How Baba met His Guru in the woods, and thereby met God;
In the Quest for the Guru and God− Fasting Disapproved;
How Baba made Mrs. Ghokhale break her fast;
Baba’s Sircar
Preliminary
In the beginning, Hemadpant describes the visible world using the allegory of the Banyan tree which has, in the phraseology of the Gita, roots above and branches below. Its branches are spread both downwards and upwards, and are nourished by the qualities. Its sprouts are the objects of the senses. Its roots, leading to actions, are extended downwards to this world of men. Its form cannot be known in this world and nor can its beginning or end be seen. After severing these strong roots with the sharp weapon of non-attachment, one should seek the path beyond which there is no return.
To traverse this path, the help of a good guide (Guru) is absolutely necessary. However learned a man may be, or however deep he might study the Vedas and the Vedangas (sacred literature), he cannot get to his destination safely without a guide. If a guide is there to help him and show him the right path, he can avoid the pitfalls and the wild beasts on the journey and everything will be smooth-sailing.
Baba’s experience in this matter, a story which He Himself tells, is truly wonderful; when remembered, it will give you faith, devotion and salvation.
The Quest
“Once, the four of us were studying religious scriptures and other books and thus feeling enlightened, we began to discuss the nature of the Brahman. One of us said that we should raise the self by the Self and not depend on others. To this, the second replied that he who controls his mind is blessed, thus we should be free from thoughts and ideas, and there is nothing in the world without us. The third said that the world is always changing, the formless is eternal and thus we should discriminate between the Unreal and the Real. And the fourth (Baba Himself) urged that bookish knowledge is worthless and added, “Let us do our prescribed duty and surrender our body, mind and five pranas(life forces) at the Guru’s feet. The Guru is God and is all-pervading. To attain this conviction, strong and unbounded faith is necessary.”
While discussing this, we began to ramble through the woods in our quest for God. The three others wanted to make the quest with their free and unaided intellect. On the way, a Vanjari (a traveling vendor who sells things such as grain) met us and asked us, “It is hot now; where and how far are you going?” “To search the woods”, we replied. He inquired, “On what quest are you bound?” We gave him an ambiguous and evasive reply; Seeing us rambling aimlessly, he was moved and said, “Since you do not know the woods well, you should not wander at random. If you want to walk through forests and jungles, you should take a guide with you. Why do you exert yourselves unnecessarily at this hot noon-hour? You may not want to tell me about your secret quest, but you can still sit down, eat bread, drink water, rest and then resume your search. Always be patient at heart.” Though he spoke with so much affection, we discarded his offer and marched on. We thought that we were self-contained men and needed nobody’s help. The woods were vast and track-less and the trees therein grew so close and tall, and the sun’s rays could not penetrate through them; so we lost our way and wandered for a long time. Ultimately, through sheer good luck, we came back to the place from where we started.
The Vanjari met us again and said, “Relying on your own skills, you lost your way; a guide is always necessary to show us the right way in small or great matters and no quest can be successfully carried out on an empty stomach. Unless God wills it, no one meets us on the way. Do not discard offers of food; served dishes should not be thrust away. Offers of food should be regarded as auspicious signs of success.” Saying this, he again offered us food and asked us to be calm and patient. Again, the others did not like this hospitality and discarded his offer and went away. They were very obstinate.
I was hungry and thirsty and I was moved by the Vanjari’s extraordinary love; we thought ourselves very learned, but were strangers to pity and kindness. The Vanjari was an illiterate fellow and yet he had love in his heart and invited us to share his bread.

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Passing Away In Baba’s Presence:
Sannyasi Vijayanand
Balaram Mankar
Tatyasaheb Noolkar
Megha
The Tiger
Preliminary
The last thought that a man has at the moment of death, determines his future course. Shri Krishna has said in the Gita (VIII-5-6), “He who remembers Me in his last moments, comes verily to Me, and he that meditates otherwise at that time goes to what he meditates on.” We cannot be certain that we can entertain a particular good thought at our last moment, for we are most likely to be terrified by many things. Hence, constant practice is necessary to enable us to fix our mind on any desired good thought at the time of our death. Saints therefore recommend that we always remember God and chant His name, so that we are focused when the time for our departure comes. The devotees surrender themselves completely to the Saints, with the firm belief that the omniscient Saints will guide and help them in their last moments. A few such cases will be noted here.
Sannyasi Vijayanand
A Sannyasi named Vijayanand started on a pilgrimage to Manasa-Sarovar. On the way there, upon hearing of Baba’s fame, he halted at Shirdi. There he met Somadevaji Swami of Hardwar and asked him about the particulars of the Manasa-Sarovar trip. The Swami told him that the Sarovar was 500 miles from the Gangotri and described to him the difficulties of the journey: plenty of snow, the change of dialect every 150 miles and the suspicious nature of the people of Bhutan, who harassed the pilgrims. Hearing this, the Sannyasi was dejected and cancelled the trip. Then, when he went to meet Baba and prostrated before Him, Baba got enraged and said, “Drive out this useless Sannyasi! His company is of no use!” The Sannyasi did not know Baba’s nature; He was upset by this, but sat there watching things that were happening in the Masjid. It was the morning Darbar and the Masjid was crowded. Baba was being worshipped in various ways. Some were washing His Feet, some were drinking the holy water from washing His feet, others were swabbing their eyes with it, while some were applying scents and sandal paste to His body. Everyone was doing these things with no distinction of caste and creed. Though Baba got enraged with him, he was filled with affection for Baba and he did not want to leave the place.
He had been in Shirdi for two days when he got a letter from Chennai(Madras) stating that his mother was very ill. He was very dejected and wanted to be by his mother’s side, but he could not leave without Baba’s permission. So he saw Baba with the letter in hand and asked for His permission to return home.The omniscient Baba, who knew the future, said to him, “If you loved your mother so much, why did you accept Sannyas? Fondness or attachment is not part of a Sannyasi’s life. Go and sit quietly in your lodging and wait patiently for a few days. There are many robbers in the Wada, bolt your doors and be very vigilant, otherwise the thieves will steal everything. Wealth and prosperity are transient and the body is subject to decay and death. Knowing this, do your duty and forget all attachment to the things of this world and the next. He who does this and surrenders himself to the Feet of Hari (Lord) will be free from all troubles and will attain bliss. The Lord runs to help the devotee who remembers and meditates on Him with love and affection. Your store of past merits is considerable and thus you have come here. Now imbibe what I say and realize the aim of your life. With a desire-less mind, begin from tomorrow the study of the Bhagwat. Do three saptahas (one reading every week) conscientiously. The Lord will be pleased with you and will destroy your sorrows. Your illusions will vanish and you will get peace.” Seeing that his end was approaching, Baba prescribed that remedy and made him read the Ramavijaya, which is believed to please the God of death. The next morning, after bathing and other purifying rites, he started reading the Bhagwat in a secluded part of the Lendi garden. He completed two readings and thereafter felt very exhausted. He returned to the Wada and stayed in his lodging for two days and on the third day he breathed his last on Fakir Bade Baba’s lap. Baba asked people to preserve the body for a day− for a very good reason;

This chapter of the Sai Satcharitra covers the following:
Kakaji Vaidya of Vani
Khushalchand of Rahata
Ramlal from Bombay
Preliminary
Bow to the kind Sai Who is the Abode of Mercy and loves His devotees dearly. Through merely receiving His darshan, He does away with their fear of this worldly existence and saves them from calamities. He was first formless, but on account of the devotion of His devotees, He was obliged to take a form. To liberate and help devotees attain self-realization is the mission of saints and for Sai−the greatest of the saints− that mission was inevitable. Those who take refuge at His Feet have all their sins destroyed and their progress is certain. Even Brahmins from holy places come to Him and read scriptures and chant the Gayatri Mantra in His presence. We, who are weak and without any merits, do not know what devotion truly is; but we do know that though everyone else may abandon us, Sai won’t forsake us. Those whom He favors get enormous strength, discrimination between the Unreal and the Real and knowledge.
Sai always knows the desires of His devotees and fulfills the same. Hence, they get what they want and are grateful. So we invoke His aid and prostrate ourselves before Him. Forgetting all our faults, we let Him free us from all anxieties. He, who is overcome with calamities and remembers and prays to Sai, will get his mind calmed and pacified through His grace.
Sai, the ocean of mercy, says Hemadpant, favored him and the result is this work – The Sai-Satcharitra. Otherwise, what qualifications had he to undertake this enterprise? But as Sai took all the responsibility, Hemadpant felt no burden or concern about this. When the powerful Light of Knowledge was there to inspire his speech and pen, why should he entertain any doubt or feel any anxiety? Sai got the service, in the form of this book, done by him. This is due to the accumulation of Hemadpant’s merits in his past births; Therefore, he feels he is fortunate and blessed.
The following story is not a mere tale, but pure nectar. He who drinks it will realize Sai’s greatness and all-pervasiveness. Those who want to argue and criticize should not read these stories. What is needed here is not discussion but unlimited love and devotion. Learned, devout and faithful believers or those who consider themselves servants of the Saints will like and appreciate these stories, while others will take them to be mere fables.
Fortunate devotees of Baba will find Sai-leelas to be a wish-fulfilling tree. Drinking this nectar of Sai-leelas will liberate ignorant souls, satisfy the house-holders and will be a sadhana to the aspirants.
Kakaji Vaidya
In a place called Vani, in the district of Nasik, there lived a man named Kakaji Vaidya. He was the priest in the Temple of the Goddess Sapta-Shringi. He was so overwhelmed with adverse circumstances and calamities that he lost his peace of mind and became quite restless. Under such circumstances, one evening he went into the temple of the Goddess and prayed unto Her from the bottom of his heart and invoked Her aid to free him from anxiety. The Goddess was pleased with his devotion and the same night appeared to him in his dreams and said, “You go to Baba and then your mind will become calm and composed.”
Kakaji was anxious to know from Her who this Baba was, but before he could get any explanation he was awakened. Then he began to wonder who this Baba might be. After some thought, he resolved that Baba might be Tryambakeshwar (Lord Shiva). So he went to the holy place Tryambak (in the Nasik District) and stayed there for ten days.
During this period, he bathed early in the morning, chanted the Rudra hymns, performed the Abhishekam (a ritual of pouring a stream of fresh cold water over the Pindi(Shiva’s form)) and performed other religious rites. But despite all this, he was just as restless as before. Then he returned home and again invoked the Goddess pitifully. That night, She again appeared in his dreams and said, “Why did you go to Tryambakeshwar in vain? I mean, Shri Sai Samarth of Shirdi.”

This Chapter covers the the Stories of:
The Madrasi Bhajani Mela
The Tendulkars (Father and son)
Captain Hate
And Waman Narvekar
This Chapter describes some more of the interesting and wonderful stories of Sai Baba.
The Madrasi Bhajani Mela
It was in the year 1916 that a Madrasi Bhajan group started on a Pilgrimage to the holy city of Banaras. The group consisted of a man, his wife, daughter and sister-in-law. Unfortunately, their names are not mentioned. On their way, the group heard that there lived in Shirdi a great sage named Sai Baba, who was very liberal. They heard that He distributed money every day to His devotees and to skillful persons who displayed their skill in front of Him. A lot of money in the form of Dakshina was collected daily by Sai Baba; And out of this amount, He gave one rupee daily to a three year old girl Amani (the daughter of a devotee Kondaji), 6 rupees to Jamali (Amani’s mother) and Rupees 10, 20 or even 50 to other devotees. Upon hearing all this, the party came to Shirdi and stayed there. The group sang very good bhajans(devotional songs), but inwardly they craved money. Three of the four people in the party were full of avarice, but the man’s wife was of a very different nature. She had great regard and love for Baba. Once it so happened that when the noon Arati was going on, Baba was very pleased with her faith and devotion and decided to give her darshan of her Beloved Deity. To her, Baba appeared as Rama; On seeing her beloved Deity, she was greatly moved. Tears began to flow from her eyes and she clapped her hands with joy. The people around her began to wonder about the cause of her sudden joyful mood, but were unable to guess its cause. Later in the afternoon, she disclosed everything to her husband. She told him how she saw Shri Rama in place of Sai Baba. He thought that she was very simple and devout, and her seeing Rama might be a hallucination. He made fun of her, saying that it was not possible that she alone would see Rama, while everyone else saw Sai Baba. She did not resent this remark, as she was fortunate enough to receive similar visions when her mind was calm and composed and free from avarice.
The Wonderful Vision
One night, the husband had a wonderful dream:
He was in a big city and the police there had arrested him, tied his hands with a rope and put him in a cage. As the police were closing the door, he saw Sai Baba standing on the other side of the cage. On seeing Baba so close, he said in a plaintive tone, “Hearing of Your fame, I came to Your Feet and why then should a calamity befall me when You are standing here in person?” Baba said, “You must suffer the consequences of your actions” The man answered, “I have not done anything in this life which would bring such misfortune on me.” Baba said, “If not in this life, you must have committed some sin in your past life.” He replied, “I do not know anything about my past life; but assuming that I did commit some sin, shouldn’t it be burnt and destroyed in Your presence−just as dry grass is burnt by fire?” Baba replied, “Have you got such faith?” “Yes”, said the man. Baba then asked him to close his eyes. As soon as he shut his eyes, he heard the thumping sound of something falling. And upon opening his eyes, he saw that he was free and that the policemen had fallen down and were bleeding. Rather frightened, he began to look at Baba who said, “Now you are truly caught and officers will now come and arrest you.” Then the man begged Baba, “There is no other savior except You; please save me somehow!” Then Baba asked him to close his eyes again. He did so and when he opened them, he saw that he was free, out of the cage and that Baba was by his side. He then fell at Baba’s Feet. Baba asked him, “Is there any difference between this namaskar and your previous ones? Think about it carefully and reply.” The man replied, “There is a lot of difference. My former namaskaras were offered with the aim of getting money from You, but the present namaskar is one offered to You as God. Besides this, I formerly thought resentfully that you, being a Muslim, were ruining us Hindus”. Baba then responded, “Do you not believe in Muslim Gods?” The man replied, “No”. Then Baba said, “Have you not got a Panja (Emblem of a Hand) in your house

This chapter covers the following:
Sparrows Drawn To Shirdi:
Lakshmichand
The Lady from Burhanpore
And Megha
Preliminary
Sai is not finite or limited. He dwells in all beings, from ants and insects to the God Brahma. He pervades every being on earth; Sai was well-versed in the knowledge of the Vedas as well as in the science of Self-realization. As He was proficient in these, He was well-suited to be a Sadguru. Any person, however learned, unable to awaken disciples and establish them in Self-realization, does not deserve to be called a Sadguru. The Sadguru does away with both life and death and thus he is more kind and merciful than anybody.
Sai Baba often said that no matter where His devotee went, he would be drawn to Shirdi like a sparrow with a thread tied to its feet. This Chapter describes the stories of three such sparrows.
Lala Lakshmichand
This gentleman first worked in the Railways and afterwards in the Shri Venkateshwara Press in Bombay and thereafter in the firm of Messrs. Ralli Brothers, as a clerk. He received Baba’s darshan in 1910. A month or two before Christmas, he had a dream in which an old man with a beard was standing surrounded by His devotees. A few days later, he went to the house of his friend, Mr Dattatreya Manjunath Bijur, to hear kirtans by Das Ganu. It was Das Ganu’s practice to keep Baba’s picture in front of him, facing the audience, while he sang kirtans(songs in praise of the Lord). Lakshmichand was surprised to see that the old man he saw in his dream, was the man in the picture. Thus, he came to the conclusion that the old man he saw in his dream was Sai Baba himself. The sight of this picture, Das Ganu’s kirtan and the life of the Saint Tukaram on which Das Ganu discoursed, all made a deep impression on his mind and he longed to go to Shirdi. It is always the experience of devotees that God always helps them in their search for a Sadguru and other spiritual endeavors. That very night at 8.00 p.m., a friend named Shankarrao knocked on Lakshmichand’s door and asked him whether he would accompany him to Shirdi. His joy knew no bounds and he at once decided to go to Shirdi. He borrowed some money from his cousin and after making due preparations, left for Shirdi. On the train, he and his friend Shankar Rao sang some Bhajans (religious songs) and enquired about Sai Baba with a few fellow passengers who were returning to their homes near Shirdi. They all said that Sai Baba was a great Saint who had been living in Shirdi for many years. When they reached Kopergaon, he wanted to buy good guavas to offer to Baba, but he was so distracted by the scenery and sights, that he forgot to purchase them. When they were nearing Shirdi, he was reminded of the guavas. Just then, he saw an old woman with a basket of guavas on her head, running after the tanga(small horse-drawn cart in which he was traveling). The tanga was stopped and he gladly purchased a few select fruits and then the woman said, “Take the rest and offer them on my behalf to Baba”. The fact that he had intended to purchase guavas, but that he had forgotten to do so, the old woman running after the tanga and her devotion to Baba, surprised both men. However, Lakshmichand reasoned that the old woman might be some relative of Sai Baba’s. Then they drove on and reached Shirdi. With Puja materials in hand, they went to the Masjid and worshipped Baba with due formality. Lakshmichand was greatly moved and was extremely happy to see Baba. He was enrapt with Baba’s Feet, as a bee is with a sweet-smelling lotus.
Then Baba spoke as follows, “Cunning fellow! He sings bhajans on the way and enquires from others; why ask others? Shouldn’t we see everything with our own eyes? What is the necessity to ask others? Just ask yourself whether your dream was true or not? What was the necessity of darshan, when a loan had to be taken to receive it? Is the heart’s desire now satisfied?”
Hearing these words, Lakshmichand was wonderstruck at Baba’s omniscience. He was at a loss to know how Baba came to know about all the things that had happened on his way to Shirdi. The main thing to note in this respect is that Baba never liked people running into debt to receive His darshan, to celebrate a holiday or to go on a pilgrimage.
Sanza
One day at noon, when Lakshmichand was waiting for meals to be served, he got some sanza (wheat-pudding) from a devotee as Prasad.

This chapter covers the following:
Granting a Consecrated Book
Baba’s Blessings in the form of the Bhagwat and Vishnu-Sahasra Nama
Dixit's Vitthal Vision
Gita Rahasya
And The Khapardes
This Chapter describes how Sai Baba blessed His devotees by granting them religious books, after he had consecrated them, and a few other stories.
Preliminary
When a man dives into the sea, he gets the merit of bathing in all the sacred rivers. Similarly, when a man takes refuge at the feet of the Sadguru, he gets the merit of bowing to the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh) and also the Para-Brahma. May victory be unto Shri Sai, the wish-fulfilling tree and the ocean of knowledge who gives us self-realization; Oh Sai, create in us a regard for Your stories and let the readers devour them with the same relish with which the chatak bird drinks water from the clouds and becomes happy. While listening to Your stories, let them and their families get all the sattwik emotions; let their bodies perspire, let their eyes be full of tears, let their prana be steady, let their minds be composed, let their hair stand on end; let them cry, sob and shake and let their hostilities and distinctions vanish. If these things happen, that is a sign of the grace of the Guru dawning upon them. When these emotions develop in you, the Guru is greatly pleased and will certainly lead you on to the goal of self-realization. The best way therefore, to free yourself from the shackles of Maya, is complete and wholehearted surrender to Baba. The Vedas cannot take you across the ocean of Maya; It is only the Sadguru who can do so and make you see the Lord in all creatures.
Granting a Consecrated Book
The variety of the methods by which Baba imparted advice has already been mentioned in the previous Chapters. In this one, we shall deal with one such method. It was the habit of some devotees to bring religious books they wanted to study, to Baba and to have them consecrated by Him. While reading such books every day, they felt that Baba was with them. Kaka Mahajani came to Shirdi with a copy of the Ekanathi Bhagwat. Shama borrowed the book to read it and took it with him when he went to the Masjid. There, Baba took it from him, touched it and after flipping through a few pages, gave it back to Shama and asked him to keep it with him. When Shama said that it belonged to Kaka and that it had to be returned, Baba said, “No, No. I have given it to you and you better keep it with you for safe custody. It will be of use to you.” In this way, many books were entrusted to Shama. Kaka Mahajani, after a few days, brought another copy of the Bhagwat and gave it to Baba. Baba then gave it back as Prasad and asked him to preserve it well, and assured him that it would benefit him greatly. Kaka accepted it with a bow.
Shama and the Vishnu-Sahasra-Nama
Shama was a very close devotee and Baba wanted to bless him by giving him a copy of the Vishnu-Sahasra-Nama as Prasad. This was done in the following way. Once, a Ramadasi (follower of the Saint Ramadas) came to Shirdi and stayed there for some time. Every day, He woke up early in the morning, washed his face, bathed and then after wearing saffron-colored clothes and besmearing himself with sacred ashes, read the Vishnu-Sahasra-Nama (a book that gives a thousand names in praise of the Lord Vishnu−held second in importance to the Bhagwad Geeta) and the Adhyatma-Ramayana (the esoteric version of Rama’s story) with faith. After a few days, Baba thought of favoring and initiating Shama with the Vishnu-Sahasra-Nama. He therefore called the Ramadasi and said to him that He was suffering from intense stomach-pain and that unless He took Senna-pods (a mild purgative drug) the pain would not stop. And thus he requested the Ramadasi to go to the bazaar and bring the drug. The Ramadasi closed his book and went to the bazaar. Then Baba descended from His seat, came to where the Ramadasi had been sitting and took the copy of the Vishnu-Sahasra-Nama. Then he returned to His seat and said to Shama, “Oh Shama, this book is very valuable and efficacious, so I present it to you;

This chapter covers the following:
The Stories of:
Bhakta Pant
Harishchandra Pitale
And Gopal Ambadekar.
Preliminary
All the things that we see in the universe are nothing but Maya’s games− the creative power of the Lord. These things do not really exist. What really exists is the Real Absolute. Just as we mistake a rope for a garland or a stick for a serpent in the darkness, we always see things as they outwardly appear and not as what underlies all those visible things. It is only the Sadguru who opens the eyes of our understanding and enables us to see things in their true light and not as they appear. Let us therefore worship the Sadguru and pray to him to give us true vision, which is God-vision.
Inner Worship
Hemadpant has given us a novel form of worship; Let us, he says, use warm water in the form of tears of joy to wash the Sadguru’s feet, let us besmear His body with the sandal paste of pure love, let us cover His body with the cloth of true faith, let us offer eight lotuses in the form of our eight Sattwik emotions and fruit in the form of our concentrated mind and let us apply to His head bukka (black-powder) in the form of devotion and tie the waistband of Bhakti and place our head on his feet.
After decorating the Sadguru with jewelry in this way, let us offer our all to Him and wave the fan of devotion to ward off the heat. After such blissful worship, let us pray thus: “Introvert our mind, turn it inward, help us to discriminate between the Unreal and the Real and attain non-attachment for all worldly things and thus enable us to attain Self-realization. We surrender ourselves, body and soul (body-consciousness and ego), to You. Make our eyes Yours, so that we shall never feel pleasure and pain. Control our body and mind as You wish. Let our mind attain peace at Your Feet.”
Let us now turn to the stories of this Chapter.
Bhakta Pant
Once it so happened that a devotee named Pant, a disciple of another Sadguru, had the good fortune of visiting Shirdi. He had no desire to go to Shirdi, but man proposes one way and God disposes the other. He was travelling in a train where he met many friends bound for Shirdi. They all asked him to accompany them and he could not refuse. They alighted at Bombay, while Pant got down at Virar. There, he asked his Sadguru for permission to go to Shirdi and after arranging for the expenses, left with his friends for Shirdi. They all reached the place in the morning and went to the Masjid at about 11 A.M. Upon seeing the concourse of devotees assembled for Baba’s worship, they were all pleased, but Pant suddenly had a fit and fainted. They were all frightened but they tried their best to bring him to his senses. With Baba’s grace and with pitchers of water poured over his head, he regained his consciousness and sat upright, as if he had just been awakened from deep sleep. The omniscient Baba, knowing that he was a disciple of another Guru, assured him fearlessness and confirmed his faith in his own Guru, by addressing him as follows, “Come what may, stick to your Bolster (support, i.e. his Guru) and always remain steady and in union with him.” Pant at once knew the significance of this remark and thus he was reminded of his Sadguru. He never forgot Baba’s kindness in this regard.
Harishchandra Pitale
There was a gentleman named Harishchandra Pitale who lived in Bombay. He had a son who suffered from epilepsy. He tried many allopathic and Ayurvedic doctors, but was unable to cure his son’s epilepsy. There remained only one remedy− resorting to the saints. It has been stated in Chapter 15 that Das Ganu, by his inimitable and splendid kirtans (songs in praise of the Lord), spread Sai Baba’s fame in the Bombay Presidency.
