Did you know? Hermit Crabs LOVE Crackers! 60 Plus Influencers - Cocos Island

During a trip to Cocos Keeling Islands, they both fell in LOVE with hermit crabs. These little guys were everywhere and boy, was it NOT safe to leave ANY food out, anywhere! As they found out whilst enjoying a walk on a fairly deserted beach and discovered some belongings left temporarily by island workers as they went to the toilet...A lesson learned the hard way - hope the islanders weren't expecting to finish off their picnic, because the hermits got there before them!

Hermit Crab Migration on Cocos Keeling Islands - 60 Plus Influencer - Tony Isaacson

During a trip to Cocos Islands they witnessed thousands of hermit crabs on a deserted island who came alive as soon as they heard visitors landing by kayak onto their island home! Ok ok, so it wasn't quite the amazing red crab migration of Christmas Island, but it impressed them both!

Meet Cute Hazel and Jackie - Two Adorable Photo Bombers When Filming In A Bat Aviary
Trying to film whilst working in a bat aviary has its challenges. A lot depends on the time of day, and whether they've just had a sugar hit, like having been given mango seeds to lick, or beautiful melaleuca blossom nectar in fresh browse.
Dusk is not a great time as they get quite active, almost hyperactive. And super curious. Some just want to crawl over you, others want to hang off you, and some just want to grab your camera! Aaargh!
PS. They are all actually very gentle creatures.
PPS. And yes, we are all fully Covid and ABLV vaccinated (anyone who handles flying foxes should be vaccinated against ABLV - Australian Bat Lyssa Virus).

Discover Christmas Island - Australian Nature Tourism at its Best!
Christmas Island, one of Australia's hidden gems. Famous for two things, its red crab migration (the biggest in the world) and the International Detention Centre. But Christmas Island is so much more.
A tiny spot in the Indian Ocean, it is home to so many rare, endangered, unique, and endemic flora and fauna species, that it rivals the Galapagos Islands of South America.
But the best bit? It's AUSALIAN! And it's only a short flight from Perth, on the west coast.
So if you are a nature lover, an explorer, an adventurer of the Australian wilderness, or places off the beaten track, then head to Christmas Island. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Organ Donation - Giving the Gift of Life - Jess Gater Interviewed by Stuart George BBC Radio Stoke
Listen to this emotive BBC radio interview by Jess Gater and her close friend Dave Dawson, talking about their own experiences with organ donation when a loved one passes suddenly, and being a transplant organ recipient.
Jess lost her boyfriend Gav unexpectedly in the early hours of Christmas Day morning in 2021. But as Jess found out later, Gav had wished to be an organ donor. So Jess and Gav's family set out to make that come true for him, despite the tragic circumstances of his passing.
Incidentally, Dave, her close friend had received a kidney 6 years before, donated by a stranger after being on the waiting list for 31 years.
Listen to both their stories and let those personal experiences introduce you to the thought of tissue and organ donation. It may convince you to save a life...
PS. Stuart George is a Presenter and Journalist, working with BBC Radio Stoke. He has a regular News/Sport/Talk afternoon show in which he brings interviews on current interesting topics to his listeners'.
ORGAN DONATION
Donating organs and tissue can save people’s lives. Depending on the organ or tissue, you can donate while you’re alive, or, after death.
Organ donation after death can be quite an issue as it can be difficult getting suitable donors. Most organs come from people who have died in accidents and are declared brain dead, but their hearts are still pumping blood and their organs are working. But only around 1% of people die in these circumstances.
Different countries also have varying systems. For example, the UK has recently changed to an opt-out system, whilst Australia still has an opt-in system.
This means you have to individually register to become an organ donor.
For more information, if you live in the UK go to:
https://www.nhsbt.nhs.uk/what-we-do/transplantation-services/organ-donation-and-transplantation
For more information, if you live in Australia go to: https://www.health.gov.au/health-topics/organ-and-tissue-donation
For more information, if you live in the US go to:
https://www.donatelife.net/
For other countries, check with your own government departments for information relevant to you. But please wherever you live, think seriously about registering as an organ and/or tissue donor.
And discuss your decision with your loved ones so they are aware of your wishes. Your decision now WILL HELP SAVE LIVES later...

Feeding Bats A Banana - Watch Out For the Banana Thief - Behind The Scenes Working In A Bat Aviary
Bats eating bananas is always a hit on social media. So I thought I would give it a go and give some bats an afternoon treat whilst chopping fruit for their dinner.
Well, it was a surprisingly slow burn, as you will see. But keep watching... Once the bats got over their shyness, suddenly it was all on!
And of course, a mango seed thief got in on the act and stole the end of the banana, to run away with it off into the distance. Hilarious!

Flying Fox Tries To Eat A Mango Seed and Fight Off Others Trying To Steal It! Bat Aviary Antics
I never realized that bats or flying foxes LOVE mango seeds. They are the bit left once you cut the cheeks of the mango off for the flying foxes' dinner of chopped fruit.
The seeds, in fact, appear to be a prized possession to a bat, as you will see in this video.
Watch as one of the bats tries to hang on to her treat, while everyone else tries to grab it off her.
And no spoiler alerts but you have to watch to the end to see what happens...

Did You Know Bats Prefer Native Fig Leaf Than Chopped Fruit? Behind The Scenes In A Bat Aviary
Most people think bats or flying foxes only eat our backyard fruit or fruit in our commercial orchards. But they don't. This video shows that given the choice of chopped fruit, native golden penda flower or native fig leaf, the fig leaf has it all over the others!
They also eat the flowers and sometimes leaves of eucalypt, lily pilly, paperbark, and turpentine trees.
But when native foods are scarce, particularly during drought, bats may supplement this diet by eating fruit from introduced plants found in gardens, orchards, parks, and streetscaping.

Shortly After Rescue Momma Black Flying Fox Gives Birth On Camera - A Carer's Moment Of A Lifetime!
A concerned member of the public made a wildlife rescue call one evening as they noticed a flying fox found in their backyard.
Liz Miller from Bats Qld answered the call and discovered a distressed black flying fox, just hanging on a pot plant. It was obvious she was heavily pregnant.
She had possibly come in to find food as there was a shortage at that time and become trapped in the courtyard, most likely very exhausted and hungry.
She was taken to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, (Gold Coast, QLD) which offers a wonderful service to local bat rescuers and their batties.
She had a full check-up and was then discharged to be taken home to an experienced flying fox carer, Joanie Lewis, for further care and observations.
That morning about 5.30am Joanie heard a baby bat crying out. She remembered waking up thinking that she didn't have any babies in her care? So she went to investigate.
Lo and behold, Joannie saw the momma bat beginning to give birth, so took the opportunity to try to video it. It was Joanie's first baby bat birth to witness as well.
She was very careful not to disturb or stress her too much as she had only just come into care.
But as you can see in the video, momma bat, named Tuk Tuk seemed fine and not stressed with being filmed. What an amazing experience to witness, and Joanie was so lucky to capture what she did.
FOLLOW UP:
Tuk Tuk (mumma bat) and Sisu (baby) were 'hard released' into a flying fox colony within a week of being in care.
To explain, if a bat comes into care with minimal injuries, it can be taken straight to a colony during the day and allowed to join the colony.
Fortunately for Tuk Tuk and Sisu, it was ideal for them to be placed straight into a nearby colony before bub Sisu got too big. Otherwise, both would have to have been kept in care for months, until bub was strong enough to fly and follow mum.
Being hard released into a colony is ideal for a mum to carry bub out and about in the wild when she goes out at night to forage for food. She does this until bub can thermoregulate at around 4 weeks of age.
Then the mums can leave their babies at the colony at night with all the other bubs and then come back to them in the morning.
MORE ABOUT BATS QLD:
Bats QLD relies completely on donations. The organization is run by volunteers alone. Without donations, they would not be able to exist and wouldn’t be able to continue the work they do.
There is a lot of financial outlay to care for rescued flying foxes, some of which require to be kept in care for many months.

Did You Know Bats LOVE Eating Native Fig Leaf? Behind The Scenes Working In Mandi's Bat Aviary
Most people think bats or flying foxes only eat our backyard fruit or fruit in our commercial orchards. But they don't.
In fact, their natural food is pollen and nectar from over 100 species of native trees and vines.
They can eat the flowers and sometimes leaves of eucalypt, lily pilly, paperbark, and turpentine trees. And the list obviously also includes fig leaves too, judging from this video!
Only when native foods are scarce, particularly during drought, do bats have to supplement this diet by eating fruit from introduced plants found in gardens, orchards, parks, and streetscaping.

A Very Cute Bat Who Whistles And Chirps - Meet Meep In Mandi's Bat Aviary
Meep is a very cute little red flying fox. He has a particular, peculiar whistle or chirp as his vocal call, which is very distinctive. In fact, he was named after it!
He can often be heard in the background when we are working in the aviary.
But this was the first time he actually came out from hiding behind hanging blankets to check out my camera. What a wonderful moment, except some photo bombers, got in on the act and put him off.
But then, he came back. SOOOO cute!

Bat Attack! Poppy Goes Deep Throat - More Hazards When Filming Whilst Working In A Bat Aviary
Volunteering in a rehabilitation bat aviary has its moments. Some of the long-term residents in care have particular personalities. And Poppy is a special case, as Tony found out when he visited the other day and tried to film some new gliders Mandi had in care.
It was a hot sunny day and Tony was covered from head to toe with very little bare skin showing. But that didn't stop the queen of the salt lick. She saw an opportunity with a tiny area of bare skin... and she was determined to get in! And go deep throat, she did!

The Need For Microbats In Our World - A Talk By John Parsons, Fraser Coast MicroBat Group, SE QLD
MORE ABOUT MICROBATS:
There are over 1400 bat species in the world, with more than 80 in Australia, of which Fraser Coast and Southern Queensland has 22 species. These include megabats including black, grey headed, little red flying foxes, tube nosed and blossom bats, the others are the small but mighty microbats.
Microbats differ from megabats by having a tail, with or without an attached membrane, as well as a tragus in their ears. They also use echolocation to find their food in the dark by emitting a high frequency sound through their nose and or mouth, that is inaudible to humans.
Australian megabats assist in seeding and regeneration of rainforests and eucalypt forests. But their smaller cousins are responsible for keeping down insect populations, eliminating the need for toxic chemical pesticides.
Whilst Australian microbats are generally quite tiny, often resembling the size of a small mouse, they can consume almost 100% of their body weight in insects. This can amount to 1000 mozzies in a night!
They roost in caves, live tree hollows or discarded bird nests, but may move into suburbia where they can inhabit warm moist areas such as under bridges, in culverts, drains, in the walls and roofs of buildings, in folded up garden umbrellas, etc.
Due to loss of their natural homes, artificial ‘bat homes’ or microbat boxes or pipes are becoming increasingly important.
ABOUT JOHN PARSONS:
John Parsons is the President of the Fraser Coast Microbat Group in Southern Queensland. He has worked tirelessly for the conservation of bats, principally microbats in the Fraser Coast and Burnett Mary region for many years.
John has studied, researched and built artificial microbat habitats for over 20 years, and is actively involved in monitoring microbats and their movements around the Fraser Coast.
His commitment and dedication to working with local environmental groups and research institutions to provide alternative roosting sites for micro-bats has been admirable.
His microbat boxes are made out of wooden pallets and can be erected on trees, the sides of buildings or on specially constructed wooden poles.
These can provide shelter for these tiny mammals, and their presence can provide pest controlling benefits to humans living in their proximity.
Through his field work, John found a need to have a pocket-sized quick reference book on the various bat species in the region. The "Pocket Guide to the Bats of the Burnett Mary" is a result of his vision and is a great everyday guide for anyone interested in megabats and microbats.

Watch A Strong Bond, Love And Trust Between A Wild Flying Fox and Its Carer - Meet Jackie With Mandi
Little Jackie is a permanent resident flying fox kept under a special wildlife license. She adores Mandi and loves to hang off her t-shirt whenever she enters the bat aviary.
But more than anything, she LOVES having her back massaged. Well, who doesn't? Bats, I guess, are no different to humans...
FUN FACTS ABOUT LITTLE RED FLYING FOXES
The little red flying fox is one of the smallest species of mega-bats found in Australia.
Their distribution is from New South Wales in western Australia, through Queensland, and concentrating in the northern Australian region.
Little red flying foxes roost in large camps near and on trees. They cluster or clump in large numbers resembling large bunches of grapes.
They are a migratory flying fox and their camps constantly move, rarely staying in one place for more than four to six weeks.
The diet of the little red flying fox is primarily herbivorous, folivorous, or frugivorous. But its food compared to other species of flying fox mainly comprises nectar and pollen of blossoms and flowers of eucalypt trees, rather than fruit or leaves.
MORE ABOUT MANDI:

More Mango Seed Magic Using Batty Bathroom Baskets - Behind The Scenes Working In Mandi's Bat Aviary
These new bathroom caddy baskets or holders were a great buy for Mandi's aviary. We had such fun trying them out on the bats, and boy, did they LOVE them!
Check out the batty frenzy, with four or more bats at one time trying to get into the mango seeds, coming in from all angles of the basket. So funny!
MORE ABOUT FLYING FOX FOOD:
Most people think bats or flying foxes only eat our backyard fruit or fruit in our commercial orchards. But they don't.
In fact, their natural food is pollen and nectar from over 100 species of native trees and vines.
They can eat the flowers and sometimes leaves of eucalypt, lily pilly, paperbark, and turpentine trees.
When native foods are scarce, particularly during drought, the bats may supplement this diet by eating fruit from introduced plants found in gardens, orchards, parks, and streetscaping.

Flying Foxes LOVE Eating Mango Seeds From A Caddy Basket - Behind The Scenes Working In A Bat Aviary
Mandi had some old plant holders for putting up whole pieces of soft fruit in the bat aviary. So being a tragic online shopper, I set about trying to find her some new ones...
Well, I found these bathroom caddies or baskets and they were a BIG hit! A great size and they fit over door frames in the aviary, as well as through the metal wall frames. So they can be set at any height in the aviary.
And boy, did the bats go for the mango seeds we placed in them. They could 'attack' the fruit from all angles, from above or just hang from below.
A great enrichment tool to keep them busy and happy squabbling - hilarious!

Mandi's Baby Bats LOVE Mango Juice - Behind The Scenes Working In A Bat Aviary
As a special treat, Mandi gives her baby bats mango juice. It's rather sweet to my taste, but the babies love it. And not just the babies. All the bats get stuck in, especially the little red flying fox Jackie!

Ever Watched A Little Red Flying Fox Eat A Grape? Meet Jackie, In Mandi's Bat Aviary
It was nearly dinner time in Mandi's bat aviary and little Jackie was hanging on the entrance door to the aviary waiting.
So Mandi gave her one of the really big green grapes from the chopped up fruit she was putting into their food troughs.
See what happens as Jackie struggles with the size of the grape, which was huge relative to her small body size.
But she wasn't about to drop it or let anyone steal it as she hid it away from the other bats! Very funny!

Funny Turkey Hides From Rain! - Behind The Scenes in Mandi's Bat Aviary Working In The Pouring Rain
Working as a volunteer in a bat aviary means working in the sunshine and in rain. It's definitely not all "sunshine and lollipops" as Mandi says - lol!
Check out as the farm menagerie congregates around the bat aviary whilst work is going on in the rain. Wallace, an amazing American Turkey certainly doesn't mind strutting his stuff in the rain.
But one of his two females tries to preserve her dignity and keep her feathers dry...by sneaking under an umbrella. Well, a girl has to maintain her looks for her man, yes?... Hilarious!
