Whatever Happened to Schlitz Beer?
Schlitz is not only a well-known old Milwaukee beer; it's the beer that made Milwaukee a beer town. Schlitz beer got its start in 1848 in a Milwaukee, Wisconsin, tavern brewery owned by August Krug. In 1850, Krug hired Joseph Schlitz as a bookkeeper, and then Schlitz took over as brewery manager when Krug died in 1856. Two years later, Schlitz married Anna Maria Krug, August Krug's widow, and changed the name of the brewery to the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company.
In 1902, Schlitz produced one million barrels of beer, making it the largest brewery in the country. The brewery's namesake beer, an American-style lager, was known as "the beer that made Milwaukee famous."
During prohibition the company was forced to change its name from the Schlitz Brewing Company to the Schlitz Beverage Company and changed "beer" to "drink" in its famous slogan.
In the 1950s a slew of bad decisions help lead to the downfall of the American beer company. First, the brewery cut costs by starting to swap in cheaper ingredients including corn syrup for malted barley and hop pellets for fresh hops. Other brewmasters accused the Milwaukee brewery as serving "green beer".
The accusation was founded in truth. The brewery didn't age its beers for as long as other breweries. For that reason, the brewery added silica gel to the beer to keep it from getting hazy when it was chilled. There was a concern that beer makers would be required to list all ingredients on the bottles and beer cans, which would have shown a clear difference between Schlitz and its competitors.
Then the Schlitz brand added a different stabilizer which caused white flakes to show up in the beer bottles. When Miller released Miller Lite, the Schlitz brewery responded with Schlitz Light beer in 1976, but the new beer wasn't a hit with customers.
On top of that, the brand's advertising was seen as aggressive. A boxer asked "You want to take away my gusto?" when offered a chance to swap Schlitz for another beer; consumers found the ad somewhat threatening and sales continued to fall.
Thanks so Pabst Brewing Company and their ability to rediscover the beer formula, the beer is still being produced in small quantities.

What Happened To All the Woolworths?
Before Department stores we had General Stores. Many young boys worked as stock-boys to earn wages, including Frank Winfield Woolworth, who would eventually open up his own retail empire, F.W. Woolworth Co. Working at Augsbury & Moore's Drygoods in Watertown, Frank Woolworth noticed early on that most items in the store didn't carry a price tag, prompting Frank to question the business practices of the store. He set up a table in the store and filled it with merchandise that usually didn't sell well and customers couldn't help themselves from buying!
F.W. Woolworth opened his own five-cent store in Utica, New York with $321 worth of 5-cent goods. It was one of the first stores to put the merchandise in front of the customer rather than rely on a store clerk.
In 1912 there were over 596 F. W. Woolworth stores in the nation. One year later in 1913 the Woolworth building in Manhattan in New York City was completed. The skyscraper kept its title as the tallest building in the world until 1930.
Keeping prices low became a large challenge in the 1930s. After 55 years you could no longer go into the store and buy anything for a nickel or a dime. The company raised the prices to twenty cents, then in 1935 the board decided that "the selling-price limit of twenty cents on merchandise be discontinued in the store chain. It became a variety store rather than a dime store.
The Greensboro Sit-in
On February 1st, 1960, four black students sat down to eat at the segregated lunch counter at an F.W. Woolworth in Greensboro, North Carolina. Just a few minutes before, the men, which are also known as the A&T Four, had bought toothpaste and other products at the desegregated counter. However, once they sat down at the segregated counter, they were refused service when they asked for a cup of coffee. The store policy forbad service of black men at the "whites only" counter, so instead, the men stayed at the lunch counter until closing to protest the inequality of segregation.
It took until 1965 for all American Woolworth stores to desegregate.
The 1960s were a rough time for the Woolworth name. Not only had they lost profits due to boycotts, but they had also gained competitors such as Wal-Mart and Kmart. In October of 1993, Woolworth's closed over 400 general variety stores in hope to gain profits. On July 17, 1997, the last Woolworth's store was closed and the company renamed, becoming Foot Locker Inc (which Woolworth started all the way back in the '70s).
Even though the company went under in the '90s, Woolworth's lunch counters are still alive and true in the 21st century, complete with sodas and burgers.

Should You Shower at Night or in the Morning?
Is it better to take a morning shower or evening shower? Does the time of day you take a hot shower really matter?
Dermatologists say that an evening shower is good for your skin because it cleans it before sleep. Basically, there's always something in the air (dirt, germs, pollution, other grime) and the last thing you want to do is leave that on your skin.
If you're an allergy sufferer, a night shower is best to wash pollen or other allergens off your skin and hair before you try to go to sleep.
Sleep experts also note that a nighttime shower changes your body temperature and circadian rhythm in a way that may help you get to sleep faster and more easily. You might wake up with bed head from sleeping with wet hair all night, but it's up to your personal preference.
On the other side, if you are a morning person, and stick to showering during your morning routine, a morning rinse is said to help you get up and get creative.
Regardless of the time you prefer to shower, keep your water temperature mild. Experts say that it's better to use lukewarm water instead of taking a hot shower; steamy showers may feel great, but they also dry out your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin, dry skin, or acne-prone skin.

10 Homemade Kombucha Flavors Way Better Than Store-Bought
With homemade kombucha recipes, the flavor options are endless. Fresh berries, citrus fruits, herbs, spices, and even vegetables can be added to create unique kombucha flavor combinations.
Of course, you'll have to start with normal homemade kombucha, which is basically just fermented sweet tea. Making kombucha is less intimidating than it sounds, but it's important to understand the fermentation processor booch. Once you master the dos and don'ts with this nifty little guide, you'll be ready to put that new SCOBY to good use.
By bottling your own kombucha, you not only get to enjoy the fermented beverage at a lower price, but you reap all the health benefits, as well! Kombucha is packed with probiotics that aid in digestion and detox the body. It also has antioxidants, which depending upon your flavoring, can increase the health benefits. Delicious and downright good, with a tangy vinegary taste and just a bit of carbonation, making your own batch of kombucha is where it's at.
Before you get crazy with your kombucha flavors (apple, green tea, hibiscus, oolong, you name it!), you'll have to start with the basics for your first batch. The Healthy Maven has a step-by-step recipe that can get you started. What you'll need is a kombucha SCOBY (which is the symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast that causes fermentation), loose tea or tea bags, cane sugar, filtered water, and some already brewed kombucha - plus your equipment. That will include a glass jar or glass bottles, some cheesecloth (or a coffee filter or paper towel), and a rubber band to seal it, though the size of cloth will depend on your batch size.
Once you've figured out your basic kombucha recipe, the different flavors are endless! Kombucha brewing is a rewarding experience because you quite literally watch the continuous brew come to the perfect flavor. Brewing kombucha at home couldn't be more fun!

The Secret Ingredient Waffle House Adds to Their Omelettes
Waffle House may be known for a lot of their menu items (hash browns all the way! Bert's Chili with cheddar cheese, and Papa Joe's Pork Chops) Waffle House was founded by Joe Rogers in Georgia back in 1955, and since then, it's been regarded as a haven of breakfast food whatever time you visit.
Here's the secret to the famously fluffy Waffle House omelette.
Waffle House has plenty of options when it comes to its omelets. Go for the classic one with American cheese, choosing a side of grits, hash browns or tomatoes. Another popular menu item is the fiesta omelet, which features hickory-smoked ham, diced tomatoes, jalapenos, grilled onions and American cheese.
The secret to making the perfectly fluffy Waffle House omelette is all about whipping the eggs. Waffle House uses an industrial-strength milkshake mixer to whip the eggs until as fluffy as can be. You can copycat this cheese omelet at home by whipping your eggs until frothy. You could even use a blender!
Once your eggs are as frothy as can be, heat your pan on medium-high heat. Using vegetable oil or olive oil, allow your oil to heat up until ripples appear. Then, pour the beaten eggs into the pan. Allow the omelette to get firm, and then flip it. Leave it for 30 seconds without disturbing it, and then flip it back over. Allow your omelet to cook for another 30 seconds, placing the cheese on top. Then, fold the omelet to cover the cheese and take it off of the heat. Then enjoy your amazingly fluffy Waffle House omelet for brunch.
To make this recipe your own, add in the veggies or cheese variations you prefer! Ham & cheese is classic and cheddar cheese always adds flavor or put in some pepper jack for a kick. You can make it low-calorie by taking out the yolks and making an egg white omelet. However, the most important part is making your eggs as fluffy as they are at Waffle House!

Ginger Beer vs. Ginger Ale: The Real Difference Between the Two
Ginger beer vs ginger ale. Are they different? Yes! Like most soft drinks, ginger ale is created using soda water and ginger flavor. On the other hand, ginger beer is created in the same process as traditional alcoholic beers by fermenting sugar, real ginger, and water. The carbonation is a byproduct of the brewing process, turning ginger beer into a carbonated beverage. And get this, non-alcoholic ginger beer does actually contain a little bit of alcohol, but it is so little alcohol content, the FDA regulates it as a non-alcoholic beverage.
Ginger beer itself originated in England and was brewed with a starter culture called the ginger beer plant. Not really a plant, this group of grains was the base of ginger beer. Today however most commercial ginger beers are fermented with champagne yeast.
Our favorite ginger beer brands to mix in a Moscow Mule include: Fever-Tree Premium Ginger Beer, Reed's Extra Ginger Brew Ginger Beer, Barritt's Original Ginger Beer, and Bundaberg Ginger Beer
Ginger ale on the other hand is a soda and can help relieve a stomach ache. Our favorite ginger ale brands to use as a cocktail mixer include Vernor's Ginger Ale, Seagram's Ginger Ale, and Schweppes Ginger Ale.

Adding Vinegar in Your Laundry is a Genius Household Tip
Did you know distilled white vinegar is the perfect solution for odor, dulled clothes, or lint buildup? Yes! Use vinegar in your washing machine and your clothes will thank you. The acidity helps to break down stains or odors in a similar way that bleach gets rid of stains. Except for a cup of vinegar is less harmful than some harsh chemicals found in cleaning products.
White vinegar works best for this, containing the perfect amount of acidity to clean and deodorize without causing harm to your clothes. If you only have cider vinegar, make sure to dilute it before use. Simply add half a cup of vinegar to the final rinse cycle in your washer for brighter colors and to remove yellowing deodorant marks from dark clothing. Use a spray bottle to spray your colored clothes.
You can either pour in the vinegar manually at the start of the rinse cycle or add it into the fabric softener dispenser. For a stronger method, add a cup of white vinegar to a large pot of water. Bring the water to a boil and put the clothing items in. Leave them to soak overnight and then wash them in the washing machine. This wash cycle method is for stubborn or especially dark stains, but it should only be used on 100% cotton.
It also helps get rid of mildew smells as well as lint from pet hair. It even softens fabrics as a natural fabric softener! Who knew that white vinegar could be so versatile when it comes to your load of laundry?
Did you know white vinegar is also a great DIY washing machine cleaner? Clean your laundry room with this magical liquid. Washer hoses can collect laundry detergent scum and mineral deposits from hard water, which makes it harder for them to clean effectively. To counteract this, it's recommended to run a wash cycle with an empty washer, using two cups of white vinegar and hot water. This should be done a few times a year for a nice, clean washer that works efficiently!

The Difference Between Miracle Whip and Mayo
The Difference Between Miracle Whip and Mayo
Want to start a fight at the family supper table? Ask which is better: Miracle Whip or Mayonnaise? My family always stocked the fridge with Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise, but whenever I visited my grandparents, Miracle Whip was the only option in the fridge. Tangy and sweet, Kraft Miracle Whip is categorized as a salad dressing, completely different from real mayonnaise.
So what's the big difference between Miracle Whip Salad Dressing and mayonnaise? And can you substitute it for mayo in your chicken salad, potato salad, egg salad, and coleslaw? We're not going to debate which is better (there's room for both in our refrigerators), but we will share what makes these two condiments different.

What's The Best Cheese for Pizza?
Making homemade pizza is a fun way to spice up your weeknight dinner menu. But what is the perfect cheese to add to your pizza recipe? The type of cheese does matter (unlike pizza toppings which can be anything from pepperoni and prosciutto to pickles), and it depends on three things: meltability, elasticity, and flavor. Different cheeses have different textures, and some are more fitting for the title of the best cheese for pizza than the others.
Our Favorite cheeses for topping pizza include low-moisture mozzarella, fresh mozzarella cheese, provolone, cheddar cheese, fontina, gouda, gruyere, and goat cheese. Pizza lovers and pizza makers can all agree mozzarella is the most popular of the bunch.
Once you've got some sauce and cheese on your pizza dough, you can add on some hard cheeses or soft cheeses for flavor. Some of our favorites include parmesan cheese,whole-milk ricotta, and feta. These cheeses act like a garnish on your pizza pie.

Most can be found easily on Amazon.

1. Knives - A chef's knife, a paring knife, and a serrated knife is essential! A high quality knife will last longer and will be less likely to slip and nick you.

What Exactly is Imitation Crab and Should You Eat It?
SARAH RAMSEY POSTED OCTOBER 13, 2020
We've given you lots of recipes that rely on crab meat, and for good reason. Crab is delicious and you can incorporate it into so many different kinds of dishes, making it useful for appetizers and main dishes alike. Crab is a versatile seafood, but it's also expensive. As with other luxury ingredients, if you could find a good substitute, you'd probably use that.
Fortunately, there is an alternative to expensive crab, but what is imitation crab exactly? Is it good, and is it good for you? Let's take an in-depth look at this mock seafood.
Mock meats have been around a long time, although they're growing in popularity. Veggie burgers take the place of beef, and there are infamous soy-based products like Tofurkey. But imitation crab meat isn't technically a mock seafood, because the main ingredient is actually fish.
Surimi, which is Japanese for "ground fish," is bits of fish blended together to form a paste. According to The Japan Times, "surimi has been used in Japan for over 800 years in the form of kamaboko, a kind of seafood log that can be produced in various shapes and colors, which is sliced and most commonly added to soups."
The kamaboko is the precursor to the crab stick, which was invented by Katsuichi Osaki at the Osaki Suisan Company in 1974 in Kusatsu, Japan. Osaki added red food coloring to the crab stick and cut them into strips so that they would look more like crab legs. Crab sticks are often used for sushi, specifically to make California rolls.
Here's a fun fact: Surimi is made here in the United States. Although imitation crab was being imported from Japan and was becoming popular with consumers, there wasn't a welcoming atmosphere for producing surimi products domestically until the 80s, says Alaska Pubic Media. But with the collapse of a king crab fishery in Kodiak, food suppliers were looking for an alternative and Alaska fisheries catch a lot of Alaskan pollock which, as it turns out, is the perfect fish to make imitation crab.
Imitation crab doesn't include any actual crab meat, and although it does include fish, today only about half of the seafood product is made with real fish, mostly a white fish such as Alaskan pollock. Food manufacturers use egg whites and starch to give the food its shape, and flavorings including salt, sugar and other sweeteners, and natural or artificial flavors to give it a crab-like taste.
Nutritionally speaking, imitation crab has less fat and cholesterol than real crab meat. However, it also has less protein and fewer nutrients than the real thing, and it has more sugar. Some brands add other fillers like sorbitol for preservation, vegetable oil for texture and to extend shelf life, and monosodium glutamate (MSG) for flavor.
Imitation crab, in spite of its nickname as the "hot dog of the sea," isn't inherently bad. In fact, in many dishes, it's a smart, cost-effective choice. If you're mixing the crab with other ingredients, as with crab dip or a seafood salad, using quality imitation crab can make your food budget go farther.
But like all processed foods, take a good look at the label to see exactly what is in your imitation crab before buying it. And if you're eating out, ask if the crab cakes or crab rolls are the real deal or made from surimi.

Grog: The Drink of Sailors
What Is Grog?
Grog originated in the British royal navy, specifically with vice-admiral William Penn. Penn landed in Barbados in the 17th Century and captured modern-day Jamaica. Although this was significant for many reasons, one of them was the introduction of rum to the royal navy. While Jamaica had little beer or wine, there was plenty of rum to be found, and it soon became popular among sailors of the British Royal Navy to consume a generous amount of navy rum to make the long, arduous passages more bearable.
But sailors kept getting drunk with the rum so in the 18th century, Vice Admiral Edward Vernon, a British admiral who's nickname was "Old Grog," chosen for his grogram cloak of wool, silk and mohair. decided to that each man's half-pint of rum ration would be diluted with a quart of water.
The sailors weren't too happy and named to the diluted alcoholic drink, "grog" after how much they despised it. When it ports they would purchase brown sugar and lime juice to make the drink taste a little bit better.
The sailors soon learned that the "disgusting alcoholic beverage" soon saved their lives from scurvy.
So can you still find grog on ships? Well, maybe on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. On July 30th, 1970 went down in history as the last day that the Royal Navy's sailors received a grog ration. This date was known from then on as Black Tot Day, as a "tot" was another word for the ration of rum given to sailors.

What Happened to Creme Savers?
Whatever happened to Creme Savers Hard Candy? You might remember the very popular flavor, Strawberry Cream. Bring back any memories? There were also other flavors like Orange Cream and Raspberry Cream, but you really couldn't go wrong with Strawberries and Cream.
A spinoff hard candy of Life Savers, Creme Savers were produced by Nabisco in the late 90s and were sadly discontinued mid-00s without a clear explanation.
Sadly, you can't find bags of Creme Savers at big stores like Walmart and Target, not even Amazon. However, there is some good news. There are some brands you can find nowadays that are producing hard candies, which taste very similar to Creme Savers. If you're craving that nostalgic taste of Creme Savers hard candy, then try out Campino Yogurt Fruit Candies and place it in your candy dish.
The reviews are positive and customers seem to be raving about them. Sure, you can just stick with the donut-hole shaped Life Savers, but when you're craving that creamy strawberry flavor, why not check out something that is strangely similar to the real thing.
