Wat Mai Chumpol - Historic 400 Year Old Temple Murals - Nakhon Luang Thailand
Wat Mai Prachumpol or Wat Mai Chumpol (often called Wat Mai by natives) is located on the East bank of Pa Sak River in Nakhon Laung.
According to the legend this temple was constructed sometime between middle - late Ayutthaya period (1610-1629 AD). The father of Thai History, HRH Prince Damrong Rajanuphab believed that the temple was built in the reign of King Prasart Thong. However, some sources say before it was converted to a temple, the building was initially intended to be a residence of King Song Tham during his boat trip to worship Phra Buddha Baht Saraburi. The temple underwent restoration during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, King Rama V in 1893.
There are several significant architectures within the temple: (1) a main stupa (chedi) built in twelve-indented corners standing on a square platform 15 meters wide and 25 meters high, (2) an ordination hall (Ubosot) renovated on the former base, (3) a sermon hall (Vihara) situated Buddha images in the style of meditating and subduing the devil, and (4) mural paintings on the interior wall of the Vihara show the scenes of the life of Lord Buddha.
Wat Mai Prachumpol was registered as a National Ancient Monument on April 9, 1999.
The temple is small but it’s a great piece of Thai history. The murals and Chedi are worth a visit and can be combined with a stop at Prasat Nakhon Luang that is close by.

Prasat Nakhon Luang - 17th Century Ayutthaya Royal Palace With Drone Footage - Thailand
Prasat Nakhon Luang is situated on the east bank of the Pa Sak River in Nakhon Luang District of Ayutthaya province. The former royal residence is situated near the Pa Sak River.
Prasat Nakhon Luang is one of the five royal residences or palaces outside the city of
Ayutthaya cited in the old documents.
The Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya mention that King Prasat Thong sent a Siamese delegation to Angkor in Cambodia in 1631 AD with the task to bring back plans of the City of Angkor and its palaces. He then ordered a royal palace built, based on these plans, as a resting place half way between Ayutthaya and Tha Ruea. Tha Ruea was the final debarkation point for the royal barges, as from here travel continued on land towards the Buddha’s Footprint in Saraburi.
Prasat Nakhon Luang was erected by King Prasat Thong, being a design copied from the royal Khmer palace at Angkor Thom, to celebrate the event of the renewal of Cambodia's allegiance to Siam. The relations with the vassal-state of Cambodia were troubled after the death of King Srisuphanma of Cambodia in 1618. Although no record can be found in the royal chronicles of an invasion of Cambodia in the reign of King Prasat
Thong, it is assumed that a show of force was sufficient to renew Cambodia’s allegiance.
Prasat Nakhon Luang was used by the Siamese kings for day and overnight stays along the river.
Prasat Nakhon Luang is with Wat Chai Watthanaram and the two chedi of Wat Chumphon Nikayaram, one of the most important monuments of the Third architectural sub-period (1629-1732 AD), which saw the revival of the Khmer style, with the prang as the principal monument of the monastery.
On the site, north of Prasat Nakhon Luang stands a pavilion on a mound, containing an unfinished Dharma Chakra or “Wheel of the Law”, an early representation of the Buddha’s teaching. Wheels of the Law or Doctrine were carved long before the first representation of the image of the Buddha. This unfinished wheel, resembling the moon, is said to have floated to this area along the Pa Sak River, hence called Pra Jan Loi or Floating Moon. The stone was initially kept at Wat Theppa Jan and moved in 1899 AD to be enshrined on the premises of Prasat Nakhon Luang, where it was enshrined in a special hall.
The royal residence and the sanctuary must have been plundered by the Burmese during the Burma – Siamese War of 1766-7. The central prang presumably collapsed during the plunder or in later years. In the reign of King Chulalongkorn a new construction was established on top of the foundations of the old sanctuary. The western-styled building contains four footprints of the Buddha carved in stone, each about two and half meters wide
and five and half meters long. Prasat Nakhon Luang was registered as a national monument in 1935, in which year the restoration of the sanctuary began. The restoration works were finished in 1994.
The whole complex is really amazing. It is free to go and explore and a great piece of Thai history.

Rare 1,200 Year Old Javanese Temples in Surat Thani - Wat Long, Kaeo & Rattanaram - Thailand 2024
Scholars generally agree that the Old Malay-speaking, seafaring Srivijaya kingdom was based in parts of Sumatra and Java, its influence spreading as far as the Philippines and Madagascar from around the seventh to the 13th centuries.
Southern Thailand had an important settlement north of Surat Thani in the Chaiya district. An important settlement on the coast that lost its importance due to the sediment building up along the coast and land locking this community.
These temples dates back to around 1,200 years ago and are a great part of the regions history.
Wat Kaeo
A massive stupa at Wat Kaeo was built of bricks without mortar on a square indented base in a crucifix design, marking a typical plan of Candi in Indonesia. The base features a plain square supporting the main chamber 18 meters on each side.
Remarkably the exterior walls of this monument feature the pilater decoration with a groove in the centre, resembling the Cham architectural style at the Mae Son temple in Vietnam. There are four porches inside the stupa facing four directions. The southem porch remains the most completed condition, decorated with plasters and the carving of Kudu-arch the Indian horseshoe-arched window) that presumably ilustrating the real buildings in miniature. Meanwhile, the eastern porch marks an entrance to the main chamber (Garbhagniha), measuring 4 metres on each side, where the seated Buddha image in the gesture of enlightenment is housed inside as the principal sculpture. This porch associates with the niches on the lateral sides of the porch, housing Buddha images. The architectural style of Wat Kaeo suggest its comparative dating to the same period with Wat Phra Mahathat Chaiya and Wat Long.
Plenty of artifacts were found here, namely stone Buddha images, sculptures in Hinduism, a fragment of a hand holding a lotus motif, architectural fragments, Chinese and Vietnamese ceramics as well as terracotta pots from Sukhothai and Ayuthaya.
These artefacts correspond to the belief mentioned on the inscription no.23 (Wat Sema Mueang Inscription) that Wat Kaeo might be one of the three monuments built in the reign of King Srivijaya for his merit dedicated to the Lord Buddha, the Bodhisatva Padmapani and the Bodhisattva Vajrapani.
There is a clue to the treasure-trove of Wat Kaeo; that is, "Wat Kaeo stupa was built by King Si Thammasoke, and its splendour could be outstandingly seen”.
Wat Long
The name of this monastery Long is presumably derived from "Luang', meaning royal as the grand monastery. Wat Long is an abandoned Buddhist monastery with a large ruin of a brick monument as its bricks were dismantled to build the monastery walls of Phra Mahathat Chaiya.
This monument was built on a square indented base of 21.65 meters on each side, resembling the large brick stupa of Wat Kaeo. Remarkably, the exteror wals of this monument feature the plaster decoraton, showing well polished bricks without mortar. The main entrance is main passageway to its most sacred room (Gardhagriha)
Presumably, this monument was built during the 9th and 10th centuries and it was rebuilt again during the 13th-17th centuries.
Historic periods of this temple are 9th-10th Centuries and the Ayuthaya period 14th-18th Centures.
There is also an estimated 1,000 year Buddha image inside the ordination hall of Wat Rattanaram that is built next to the ruins of Wat Kaeo.

Wat Pathum Wanaram วัดปทุมวนาราม - Royal Temple in the Heart of Bangkok’s Shopping District
The temple was founded in 1857 by King Mongkut (Rama IV) as a place of worship near his Sa Pathum Palace. At the time of its founding the area was still only rice fields and only accessible by boat on the Khlong Saen Saeb.
Wat Pathum Wanaram วัดปทุมวนาราม or Wat Pathum for short is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand. It is located in the Pathum Wan District, between the two shopping malls Siam Paragon and CentralWorld, and across the street from Siam Square.
The temple is a third class royal temple. The full name of the temple is Wat Pathum Wanaram Ratcha Wora Viharn วัดปทุมวนารามราชวรวิหาร.
At the temple is a sala partially reconstructed from the crematorium of the late Princess Mother of Thailand. Known in Thai as phra men, it represents Mount Meru, the heavenly abode of the gods. The ashes of Thai Royal Family members in the line of Queen Savang Vadhana and Prince Mahidol Adulyadej are interred at House of Mahidol Memorial inside the temple.
The temple is small but very well preserved. It’s also located near one of the most important areas in the city for shopping. You could make it part of a day by taking an hour out of your day to visit here to see this very nice royal temple.

Loha Prasat (Wat Ratchanatdaram) - Unique Building from 1846 - Bangkok Thailand 2024
Wat Ratchanatdaram วัดราชนัดดาราม is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok. Meaning Temple of the Royal Niece, the temple was built by order of King Nangklao (Rama III) for his granddaughter, Princess Somanass Waddhanawathy in 1846. It is popularly known as Loha Prasat.
The name Loha Prasat, literally means iron palace. The 37 spires of the temple have a metallic finish giving the entire structure a metal like look and hence the name. The 37 spires represent the 37 Bodhipakkhiya Dharma in Buddhism.
The structure was conceived in 1846 during the reign of King (Rama III) but was not completed during his reign. Several attempts were made by King Rama III's successors to complete it but it was only in 1960, under Rama IX, that construction was restarted.
In 1995 a Buddha relic was enshrined at the topmost spire of the Loha Parsat. In 2007 it was opened to public.
The building is interesting to see. It’s also in the area of many other sites like the golden mount and democracy monument.

Exploring Chinatown - Bangkok Thailand - Food, Temples & More
Bangkok's Chinatown is one of the largest Chinatowns in the world. It was founded in 1782 when the city was established as the capital of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, and served as the home of the mainly Teochew immigrant Chinese population, who soon became the city's dominant ethnic group.
Originally centred around Sampheng, the core of Chinatown now lies along Yaowarat Road, which serves as its main artery.
Originally a wilderness area outside the city walls, Chinatown grew to become Bangkok's commercial hub throughout the late 19th to early 20th centuries, but has since declined in prominence as commercial activity moved elsewhere following the city's expansion. It now serves as a hub of Chinese culture, with numerous shops selling traditional goods, and is especially known as a food destination.
There is so much to see in this busy area. The historic buildings, temples and outdoor shopping make this a unique place to see. The markets are always bustling with activity and it’s a must see if you are in the city.

Exploring Ayutthaya By Boat - 500 Baht Tour of the City
Ayutthaya is about an hour north of Bangkok and is one of the most popular destinations for Thais and tourists alike to visit. It was the former capital of Siam until it was destroyed by the Burmese when it fell to their army in 1767. Today it’s listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and has hundreds of ancient temples to visit.
The city is an island that is surrounded by 3 rivers. It once had 24 ferries with many floating markets and canals crisscrossing the city. All of that is long gone but you can still see the remains of this once flourishing city.
There are many ways to explore the area from bicycle to tuktuk to scooter or private car. One of the best ways is to get out in the river and see it the way it used to be explored by boat. A trip around the island will cost about 500-800 Baht depending on what you want to see. It takes about an hour without any stops at the temples around the city. It’s a great way to see the city and offers a different vantage point than from the roads.

Sai Kaew is the best beach on Samet Island and a very popular resort destination. The tourist season lasts all year long and the infrastructure is very well developed. Landscapes, nature and weather of Sai Kaew are amazing and you will enjoy your vacation under the warm sun.
Sai Kaew is the most popular beach on Koh Samet Island. It is located on its east coast in the north and short distance from the ferry pier. It's also part of the Khao Laem Ya National Park. Wat Khao Phra Si Sanphetchayaram (Wat Khao Phra) - U Thong Thailand 2023
Wat Khao Phra Sri Sanphetchayaram or Khao Phra temple for short. The temple houses a revered reclining Buddha image in a cave.
It is believed that this hilltop temple was founded during the Dvaravati period as archaeological evidence has been uncovered from that era. These include many stone Buddha statues, stone statues of the god Vishnu and more. Atop the hill is a ruin of a pagoda and a replica of the Lord Buddha's footprint, which had been carved from stone. The temple holds celebrations to honor the principal reclining Buddha image twice a year.
The name is Luang Pho Sang Sisan Petch, found in the Dvaravati period (6th-11th centuries). From the cave, you can take a staircase or a trail to the hilltop.
The top of Wat Khao Phra also has a historical site. You will see the remains of an old stupa believed to be built during the Dvaravati period and renovated again during the Ayutthaya period. The ruin has only its square base (10m in width and 1.3m in height). It is one of several ancient pagodas found in U Thong. The Fine Arts Department registered all as national heritage sites.
The temple is fun to see with nice views of the surrounding area. U-Thong is not on the normal tourist trail but there are many things in the area to see.

Wat Khae & Wat Mondrop - Historic Temples in Ayutthaya Thailand 2023
Just north and east of the main city island of Ayutthaya is a small island named Ko Loi. It once had 7 active temples on the island before the fall of the city to the Burmese. Two of the temples have been restored and are active, Wat Mondrop and Wat Khae.
Wat Mondop is named in the royal chronicles of Ayutthaya. When it is unknown when it was founded or by who.
At the time of the second fall of Ayutthaya in the year 1767, the Burmese army used this Mondop temple as their base. After being abandoned, Wat Mondop was restored and is now an active temple. It features a very old Buddha that sits inside a small mondrop that was constructed to keep it safe since the original building is completely gone.
About 300 meters past Wat Mondrop is the second active temple on the island, Wat Khae. It is also unknown when it was constructed. All of the buildings have been restored in the Bangkok styling. The temple is famous for an import monk, Luang Pu Thuat, that stayed at this temple. He was believed to have supernatural abilities and the story of his life is depicted in the mural paintings inside the ordination hall
The island is only accessible by row boat from the market on the west side of the island. Cost is 5 Baht each way per person. The temples are very quite and worth a visit if you are interested in seeing more of the area but not worth a trip if you are short of time since there are much better ones to see in the area.

Wat Sanpaolo วัดสันเปาโล - The First Observatory in Thailand - Lopburi 2023
Wat Sanpaolo วัดสันเปาโล
September 1685 the first of Louis XIV “great embassies” arrived in Siam. In the delegation of court officials were six Jesuit priests trained in the latest mathematics and astronomy. The Royal Academy of Paris had equipped them with thermometers, barometers, quadrants, orreries, compasses, clocks and a variety of telescopes ranging up to 24 metres in length.
The French ambassadors and the Jesuit astronomers followed the king to Lop Buri where the Jesuits prepared to observe a lunar eclipse predicted for the 11th December.
Following the great success of the 1685 observations King Narai was readily persuaded to erect an observatory building similar to that in Paris. Furthermore, when just a few days later the French ambassadors embarked for the return journey to France he wrote a letter to King Louis XIV inviting him to send more Jesuit missionary-astronomers. King Louis XIV obliged by sending sixteen new Jesuits to Siam, these arriving in late September 1687. On their arrival they were greeted by the original Jesuit contingent and at Lop Buri they admired the newly constructed Wat San Paulo observatory.
Another lunar eclipse was predicted for 16th April 1688 which King Narai, who had been seriously ill since February, observed from his Lop Buri palace. The Jesuit astronomers made their observations from Wat San Paulo which turned out to be the only time the observatory was used.
Less than three weeks after the partial eclipse King Narai was dead, possibly hurried to his grave by poison, and his chief minister Phetracha took the throne whilst disposing ruthlessly of all opponents. Under this new regime the French were expelled from Siam and it would be two hundred years before relations with Europe would again reach the same level.
The history of this building is part of Thai science and is well worth a short visit to see. There isn’t much left of the original observation tower but it would’ve been an amazing sight when it was new.

Wat Yannawa วัดยานนาวา - Royal Temple With a Unique Boat Shaped Chedi - Bangkok 2023
Wat Yannawa วัดยานนาวา commonly known in English as "the boat temple", is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok. The temple has a long history from the Ayutthaya era to the present. During the rule of King Rama III, a viharn was built in the shape of a Chinese junk, giving the temple the nickname "the boat temple". This construction inside the temple houses a space where people pray; a nearby ubosot enshrines Buddha images and illustrations of the Loi Prathip Royal Lantern Festival (พระราชพิธีลอยพระประทีป). Additional exterior buildings enshrine a Buddha relic from Sri Lanka and the Goddess of Mercy.
The temple was built during the Ayutthaya Kingdom, before the founding of Bangkok. It was originally called Wat Kok Khwai (วัดคอกควาย) because the community of Dawei people in the area bought and sold buffalo; later, it was renamed as Wat Kok Krabue (วัดคอกกระบือ).
During the reigh of King Rama I, the temple gained royal status and the ubosot was built. During the reign of King Rama III, a viharn was built in the shape of a Chinese junk. The temple was renamed as Wat Yannawa, which translates as "the boat temple".
The two chedis on the deck represent masts and the altar at the back represents the wheelhouse. Because of this unique structure, locals call the temple “sampao chedi” ("the Chinese junk with chedis").
King Rama III chose the shape of a junk as a means of historical preservation; he believed the junk was becoming obsolete due to new ship types, and wanted to preserve its image.
The highlight of the temple is the unique boat shaped chedi. There is also an old Ayutthaya era hall next to the river but it’s currently being renovated and is closed to the public.

Lopburi province is home to the biggest sunflower fields of Thailand. Thousands of acres are filled with this beautiful bright yellow flower, that is in blossom between November and January. The largest field is located in Phatthana Nikom district, a little over 40 kilometers East of the provincial capital.
The sunflowers are a beautiful sight and have become an important tourist attraction, the sunflowers are grown to produce sunflower oil used for cooking and for their seeds, that are eaten as a light snack.
The farm also features a small farmers market. You can buy locally grown produce on sight as a way to support the local farmers.
This is one of the top 5 things to do in Lopburi and is very popular for the Thais to visit during the cooler months when the sunflowers are in full bloom.

Kraison Siharat Palace (Yen Palace) - Lopburi Thailand 2023
The Kraison Siharat residential hall commonly known as Phra Thinang Yen or the Thale Chup Son Hall was situated on an island in the Thale Chup Son freshwater reservoir which is believed to date back to the period of the Khmer rule in the 13th century. The reservoir name translates into arrow dip lake from a story of the Hindu god Vishnu dipping his arrow into the water, making it a sacred place.
King Narai had this palace built as a country retreat and he stayed here to rest from training and hunting wild elephants. It's a partially restored ruin. There's enough left standing to make a visit enjoyable but not worth a special trip unless you are a real history buff. It's north of the new town, 5km from San Phra Kan, and is one of the combined ticket sites that includes the sites in the old city like Phra Prang Sam Yod and the Narai Palace.
Back in the king's day there was a lake here, which allowed clear sky views, and in 1685 the French brought him out here to see a lunar eclipse. There were several Jesuit priests that assisted with the calculations for the eclipse and views of the sky were perfect due to the surrounding lake. This event is said to be the start of Thai science.

Traditional Loy Kratong - Festival of Lights Celebration - Bangkok Thailand 2023
History of Loy Krathong Festival
Loy Krathong Festival originated from an old Brahmin festival that paid respects to the water spirits. Thai people float krathongs to give thanks to the water goddess for the fortune of having water while others will ask for forgiveness for using too much or contaminating it.
Loy Krathong originated in the ancient Sukhothai Kingdom, over 800 years ago. The King, Ramkamhang, was a devout Buddhist and believed that at the end of the Thai year his people should pay tribute to the water goddess, Phra Mae Khong Ka, for all they had been given. So he chose a night with a full moon after the monsoons, meaning the rivers and canals would be at their fullest, to worship.
A popular legend says that one of the King's consorts, Nang Noppamas, was the one who created the first Krathong. Noppamas was the daughter of a Brahmin priest and adapted an existing Brahmin tradition to make the float from banana leaves. The king was impressed and he proclaimed that every year on this day people should celebrate Loy Krathong in the same way.
Another legend is rooted in ancient Hindu rituals. It is claimed that the festival was created to honor the magical Nagas. Nagas are serpent like mythical creatures that are said to live in bodies of water. They are often thought of as protectors of Buddha, but when angered they can spread disease and famine. To keep the Nagas happy and with the hope of receiving merit in return, devout Hindus will send offerings down lakes and rivers.
Where ever the tradition comes from it’s a major event in Thailand now. It’s a great event for everyone in the family to get together and go send their floats away in one of the many lakes, rivers or canals in the country. It’s one of my favorite things to see and take part of every year.

Wat Suthiwararam - Historic Temple with Modern Buddhist Art - Bangkok 2023
Wat Suthiwararam is a temple that is over 250 years old. This temple was originally called "Wat Khae" which is located next to the Chao Phraya River in lower Bangkok.
Later in the early Rattanakosin period was also called "Lao Temple or Wat Lao" because this area was the location for the Lao community that immigrated to Bangkok. The temple received the Royal Wisungkhamsima in 1881 during the reign of King Chulalongkorn.
It is assumed that it was built in the Thonburi period. It is considered a family temple in Songkhla.
Today, the temple has looks much different than when it was abandoned. Wat Sutthiwararam has renovated the chapel to make it more beautiful.
Behind the chapel is a large Buddha image named "Phra Phutthasiri Sutthisawat", often referred to as "Luang Pho Phra Yai" which beside this Luang Pho Phra Yai also has the image of Thao Wessuwan the Great and Thao Kuvera the Great Phraya Yak that resides at the left and right side of Luang Pho Phra Yai.
The area around the chapel which has delicate stucco work is clean and white. It is a series of sculptures of the Eightfold Path, "The Path to the Path" and "The Great Merit of the Land," combined with images of imaginary Himmapan animals.
This marble chapel is divided into two floors.
Inside the ground floor is a white marble Buddha image. With a background highlighted in red and gold, there are bas-relief images of angels and disciples of Lord Buddha.
The second floor of the chapel houses the original Buddha image that was brought from Wat Phraya Krai during the reign of King Rama V. What makes the Buddha image stand out is the Dhamma mystery mural series "Buddha's Eye, the Eye of Awakening" by contemporary artist Songdet Thipthong, from Chiang Rai.
The temple is not well known which is a shame because it is very well maintained with interesting art. There won’t be the crowds of tourists making it a great spot to explore and take pictures if you want to see some beautiful works of art.

Lopburi Monkey Festival November 2023 - Unique Monkey Buffet Festival
The festival is held every year on the last Sunday of November which was the 26th in 2023. Usually there are four banquets that day which take place at four different times; 10am, 12am, 2pm and 4pm after an official opening ceremony.
Lopburi is located about 150 kilometres north of Bangkok, and the buffet and its impressive fruit towers are located near the historical Khmer ruins and the Phra Prang Sam Yot temple.
The first Monkey Buffet Festival was organised in 1989 by a local Thai businessman to attract more tourists to the town. It worked, as the festival has grown into an important attraction for the local population, as well as Thai and international visitors.
The festival may not be for everyone since you are dealing with wild animals that have been known to bite or steal your belongings in search of food. It is a unique experience and something you will always remember.

Wat Prot Sat - Restored Ancient Temple - Ayutthaya Thailand 2023
Wat Prot Sat also written as Wat Prodsat is an ancient Ayutthaya era temple built south of Ayutthaya in the Bang Pa-in district.
Wat Prod Sat is located at Tambol Kanon Luang, Ampur Bang Pa-in, Phranakorn Si Ayutthaya Province. The ancient remains in the temple consist of the principal square-bell shaped pagoda with twelve rabbeted on the angles facing North West towards the Chao Phraya River, a chapel in front of the principal pagoda was newly restored in 2474 in the Buddhist calendar (1932). Next to the main hall 2 small shrines were built over the old ones.
In front of the chapel, there are 6 twelve rabbeted angled pagodas. From the architectural and artistry form of the ancient remains In Wat Prod Sat, it was assumed that the temple was built in late Ayutthaya period. Later on, it was ministered by Krom Luang Wongsathirachsanit in Rattanakosin period.
The temple was important during the Ayutthaya era in that it was used as a tax collection point of boats coming into the city from the gulf. It is also believed that it was the location where King Naresuan led troops in the Battle of Nantureng. King Naresuan led the navy to attack the Phra Maha Uparaja camp until it was destroyed.
The temple itself is very nice. It was fun to be able to walk around the temple and see how much work is required to restore a historical temple so it can be continued to be used by the locals. I’ve been watching the restoration and I really like how everything has turned out.

Elephant Kraal & Village - Ayutthaya Thailand 2023
The Royal Elephant Kraal & Village was established in 1996, and is home to 90 elephants. Today a world heritage site, the Royal Elephant Kraal is steeped in elephant history. It dates back to the 16th century and was historically a compound where wild elephants were captured and kept.
For hundreds of years the Kings of Thailand would attend the Royal Elephant Round Up and choose the best and strongest elephants that would work and live alongside the Thai people, and be used for labor or the military. The last annual roundup from the wild was in 1906, a spectacular display and testament to the King's power and skills of the mahouts.
The term "kraal" means "an enclosure into which are driven wild elephants which are to be tamed and educated.
War Elephants Monument
There are four large bronze monuments that feature Burmese war elephants in full battle gear with armed mahouts beside them. They are oriented toward each cardinal direction. The monuments are all cast to actual size.
These monuments were originally located at Thung Makham Yong battlefield as a part of the Queen Suriyothai Monument.
They were molded after the Second World War by esteemed artist, Khun Khaimuk Chuto. The four monuments resided at Phaniat elephant
kraal until they were moved to this current location.
The monuments are located north of the main island, adjacent to the park in front of Phaniat Palace.
The Elephant Kraal
The Elephant Kraal is located off the City Island along the west bank of the new Lopburi River in the northeastern area in Suan Phrik Sub-district. The elephant kraal of Ayutthaya is the only one left in Thailand and is located 4 Km northeast of the City. The area was called in earlier times Thamle Ya or the "grass locality", as the whole area was as a large grass field. In its immediate vicinity are the War Elephants Monument, the Phaniat Palace and an Old Kiln are situated.
The outlook from the Khocha Prawet Maha Prasat pavilion, from where the kings watched the elephant trapping ceremony, is a big cage surrounded with logs having; from the front center, fencing lines of 45 degrees spread out to both sides far away into the former jungle area.
The kraal dates back to the 16th century, when King Maha Thammaracha after the first fall of Ayutthaya in 1569, moved the old elephant kraal near Wat Song to the present site; a time when elephants were not only caught and trained for work and transport but were used for warfare.
Tamnak Phaniat
Tamnak Phaniat is a two story structure designed in a western architectural style and built in the Ratanakosin period (post 1782 AD). The brick building is “L” shaped with a front balcony.
This pavilion was built in the reign of King Rama V to be the residence of Prince Krom Phraya Bamrab Porapak when he was appointed to restore the area of Phaniat. The present pavilion was constructed on the old tamnak where Prince Thepphonphak (กรมหลวงเทพพลภักดิ์) resided when designated to lead the restoration works at Phaniat in the reign of King Rama II and to supervise the elephant roundups at that time.
The pavilion was abandoned after the last elephant round up in the beginning of the 20th century.
This area is away from the busy tourist areas in the city. It’s a nice break from the temple ruins.

Wat Chong Krom วัดจงกรม - Ancient Temple in Ayutthaya- With Drone Footage
Wat Chong Krom (วัดจงกรม)
Wat Chong Krom is today only a restored ruin located off the city island in the northern area of Ayutthaya in Khlong Sra Bua district.
The temple was situated in an area called Thung Khwan, nearly on the same north - west
axis parallel to Khlong Sra Bua, in between Wat Phraya Maen and Wat Phra Ngam. Wat Prasat stood north and adjacent from Wat Chong Krom.
The name of the monastery likely refers to a meditation technique, namely walking
meditation.
The site features a chedi, a vihara, an ubosot and different satellite chedi, all surrounded
by a wall. The ground plan of the monastery is a bit uncommon. In olden times it was the
rule that in addition of a stupa (phra prang or phra chedi), there was a vihara. Stupa and
vihara - in the simplest design - stood in the same main longitudinal axis. Often a chedi
was first built as a memorial, indicating the exact spot at which the event took place in
whose memory the temple was established. As we find here the ordination hall (ubosot)
not in the main axis, the ubosot was presumably built at a later stage.
Traditions though have been kept, as the ordination hall was built parallel to the vihara
and placed in the center of the monastic complex as it is the most accentuated religious
building. The outer wall dates probably of the same time as the construction of the
ubosot.
The principal stupa is a bell-shaped chedi in Ayutthaya style, built on an octagonal
foundation (in the cardinal and inter-cardinal directions). The chedi has an entry in the
east, leading into its sanctity via a staircase. In the cella along the inner wall niches were
built, where once Buddha images stood.
The vihara stands in the usual position east of the phra chedi, with its entrance facing east
towards the old Lopburi River. The building measured 11.7 meters in width on 19.2
meters in length, nearing the 1:2 classic proportion. The vihara has been restored at least four times.
The whole temple complex including the monk's quarters was surrounded by a moat. The monk's dwellings were situated in the south as it was a general rule that their quarters must lie to the right side of the main Buddha image of the ubosot.
Historical data about the monastery and its construction are unknown. Wat Chong Krom
was abandoned during the Siam - Burmese war which lead to the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767. The monastery was used again in the Early Ratanakosin period.

The Monastery of the Golden Mount - Wat Phu Khao Thong Temple - Ayutthaya Thailand 2023
The Wat Phu Khao Thong or Golden Mountain Temple was built in 1387. The original Mon-style chedi built by King Hongsawadi of Burma to commemorate his victory in Ayutthaya in 1569 was destroyed. The restoration started in the reign of King Boromakot and included the building of a Thai-style chedi on the old chedi base by King Naresuan in 1584. This chedi is about 80 metres high with a 2 kilogram gold ball at the top. There is a Buddha footprint from Saraburi. This temple is not far from the old city, about 2 kilometers away near the King Naresuan the Great Monument.
It is well worth a visit to see the amazing chedi as well as the historic temple grounds that are still active with monks to this day.
If you want to read more about this Chedi and temple here is a great site with a lot of information about it.
