Through clinical laboratory and functional testing, David is able to determine high-value targets for rapid metabolic improvements and efficient weight loss.

IHN Virtual Open House | November 2021 | Optimal Plant Based Eating Approaches
With Jacqueline Steinert, BA (Hons), CNP
You are what you eat. But today, the nutritional landscape is populated with trendy diets that range from all meat to no meat to low fat to high fat to low carb to high carb. Confusion abounds. What has been clinically proven is that plant based eating is both ethically and healthfully beneficial, especially when incorporating abundant antioxidant rich fresh fruits and vegetables, coupled with healthy fats and quality proteins. Besides being highly nutrient dense and powerfully preventative in disease, plant based eating is generally more economical and environmentally sustainable, reducing our dietary carbon footprint.
Plant-rich protocols consist mostly or entirely of plant based foods, which are plant derived foods such as vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and fruits. On top of that, quality matters. Whole unprocessed plant foods of excellent quality provide bioavailable nutrients that fuel and balance our health optimally. Join this lecture to discover what an optimal plant based plate looks like, critical macros and micros to incorporate into the protocol, and why we must focus on whole plant foods in order to achieve plant based benefits including improved metabolic measures in health and disease, encompassing cognitive and physical wellbeing!

- Trouble-shooting common concerns like mould, shelf-life and sourcing safe materials
- Which vegetables ferment well and which should be avoided
- How nutrients transform during fermentation to benefit digestion and immune health
- Store-bought vs. homemade
- How kraut compares to a probiotic supplement - can one replace the other?
- An introduction to the broader areas of food fermentation (vinegar, miso, natto, kombucha)

Our genetic makeup not only impacts our risk for developing diseases, but also how we respond to diet and lifestyle factors. As such, dietary and lifestyle changes need to be catered based on individual DNA for maximum efficacy.
During this hour, he discusses how genetics can be utilized to offer personalized approaches to improve one’s health and potentially to reduce the risk of developing chronic metabolic disorders. Holistic nutritionists are in an ideal position to offer DNA based, personalized nutritional plans to their clients to help them achieve their health goals. Plus, you can stay ahead of the competition and offer personalized healthcare.
You Will Learn The Role Of Genetics In:
- diet, nutrition, fitness, weight loss, and food intolerance
- detoxification pathways
- hormonal metabolism
- the risk of metabolic disorders (diabetes, high triglycerides, cholesterol)
- offering DNA based plans for personalized healthcare

Ferments with Impact: Designing Condition-Based Krauts | Webinar May 17, 2021
On Monday May 17, 2021 IHN hosted a 1 hour webinar with Kathrin Brunner and Andrew Hodge, where participants followed along, making “Dilly Kraut”. During the lesson, they took an in-depth look at the deeply therapeutic benefits of fermented foods. While fermentation has gained in popularity over the years, there are many misconceptions about how they impact our microbiomes and are used to improve health. Knowing which type of ferment, would benefit which type of condition, is essential to recommending them successfully in clinical practice. Moreover, store-bought commercial versions are often misleading and lack the health benefits of those that are traditionally made.
You Will Learn:
- How to safely ferment at home
- Trouble-shooting common concerns like mould, shelf-life and sourcing safe materials
- Which vegetables ferment well and which should be avoided
- How nutrients transform during fermentation to benefit digestion and immune health
- How kraut compares to a probiotic supplement - can one replace the other?
- An introduction to the broader areas of food fermentation (vinegar, miso, natto, kombucha) and which types of ferments benefit which conditions

Nutrition & Environment - Critical, but Often Overlooked Factors that Impact Mental Health
On Tuesday April 16, Paul Demeda, CNP discussed the factors that support or compromise our mental health. The impact of diet, nutrition, environmental factors, and functional issues on mental health is well-supported in medical literature. However, these factors are rarely considered in practice when addressing mental health issues.
In This Webinar You Will Learn:
• Specific ways in which key nutrients are involved in brain function and protection
• The impact of key environmental and functional factors on mental health and brain function
• The essential nutrients to include in any basic brain health protocol

Gut Hormones
Your “gut instinct” is right – the gastrointestinal tract is key to your health!
On Tuesday April 30, Linda Bazinet B.Sc. discussed some of the gut hormones that regulate digestion, appetite, and metabolism. The gut not only digests food, providing nutrients for your body, but it also produces many hormones. While it's expected that some of these hormones regulate digestion (such as the secretion of enzymes and movement through the G.I. tract), it may come as a surprise that some also control metabolism and appetite. Interestingly, GLP-1, one of the less-known hormones, forms the basis for the popular medication Ozempic.
In This Webinar We Will Discuss:
• Anatomy of the Gastrointestinal (G.I.) tract, including Crypts of Lieberkühn and Paneth cells
• Stomach Hormones: Gastrin and Ghrelin
• Hormones of the Small Intestine: CCK, Secretin, GIP, Intestinal Gastrin
• Lesser-known hormones: Somatostatin, GLP-1
• GLP-1 Agonists - How Does Ozempic Work?
Linda Bazinet B.Sc., M.Sc.
Linda received her B.Sc. from the University of Toronto and then completed her M.Sc. at McMaster University. With over 30 years of teaching experience, Linda's passion as a science educator is to both inform and excite students about the natural world in general and the human body in particular. Linda has taught a wide variety of courses at both Seneca and Sheridan College including Biology, General and Inorganic Chemistry, Mathematics, Microbiology, Histology, Laboratory Techniques and Environmental Science. Linda currently teaches Biological Chemistry, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Body Metabolism and Endocrinology at The Institute of Holistic Nutrition.
