Matt Hudson is a Health Coach with over 25 years studying the human mind in different forms including neuroscience and quantum physics. Over time, the cumulative effect of this low-level yet persistent physical and psychological stress leads to a wide range of symptoms. If the connection between the trigger memory, or ‘reminder’, and the response can be severed, then the symptoms may improve. Simon Prentis has spent a lifetime working with other cultures and languages in over fifty countries. By combining a short string of individual sounds (phones), suddenly, there is exponential growth in the availability of ‘words’ that can exist to represent so many different things. Dr. Stan Steindl is a Clinical Psychologist in private practice at Psychology Consultants Pty Ltd and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Psychology, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. He is also co-director of the UQ Compassionate Mind Research Group. Stan’s research interests are in the areas of motivation, behaviour change, compassion and compassion-based interventions, and especially the role of cultivating compassion and self-compassion in the context of trauma, shame, self-criticism and clinical disorders, as well as promoting psychological well-being. In this episode, Stan and I discuss the healing and transformative power of compassion. We discuss cultivating a compassionate mind and working towards living a more balanced, kind, and peaceful life. According to the Compassion-Focused Therapy psychological model, humans have at least three emotional regulation systems. (1) A threat and self-protection system that, when activated, manifests emotionally in the form of anger, disgust, fear, anxiety, and shame. (2) A drive and excitement system that motivates people to find and acquire food, mates, resources and status. (3) A soothing and social-safety system which regulates our feelings of contentment, peacefulness, and safety. If If there is an imbalance between these three emotional regulation systems, mental distress and suffering can arise. People who are highly self-critical and self-shaming may not have had enough stimulation of the soothing system or too much activation of the threat system. This imbalance may lead people to find it difficult to feel and express kindness towards themselves. They may be highly sensitive to criticism or rejection, whether real or perceived and internalize that disapproval. The goal of CFT is to correct this imbalance in the emotion regulation systems. Steven C. Hayes is a Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology in the Behavior Analysis program at the University of Nevada. Brent Huras is a productivity coach. He coaches his clients to reclaim their power, their wellness, their responsibility, their sense of purpose, and to reach their full potential. When we talk about and think about productivity, we normally think about getting as much stuff done as possible. When we don’t do as much as we think we should be doing, we accuse ourselves of being lazy, unproductive, and a failure. However, Brent teaches his clients that trying to force yourself to do more and be more isn’t going to work in the long run. What we need to do is to learn more about ourselves and why we do the things we do, what limiting beliefs we have, and ultimately learning to accept who we are before we can start making changes. Rich Vander Wal is a para athlete, recreation therapist, keynote speaker, entrepreneur, and an inspiration to all. In this episode, Rich tells us his story of transformation after having experienced a traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in 1992, which resulted in complete T4 Paraplegia. These days Rich is a Recreation Therapist and Founder of Neurocore Physiotherapy, a rehab centre for individuals with neurological conditions, a father and family man, an elite athlete, and keynote speaker helping people find fulfillment in their lives. Rich’s story epitomizes human resilience and being able to reclaim your life after suffering a life-changing accident. After suffering a complete T4 paraplegia in a motorcycle accident, Rich’s whole world was shaken. His whole life suddenly had to change as he embarked on a journey on learning how to live a fulfilled life after the accident. After spending months in rehab learning to work his body in new ways, and learning to use his new equipment, Rich found himself again in sports and athletics - albeit now he had to also redefine training as a para athlete. Rich got involved in just about as many sports as he could - rowing, tennis, cycling, swimming, skiing, and mountain biking. Sport and athletics is still an essential part of Rich’s life. Rich has represented Canada in rowing, tennis, and alpine skiing and is currently training for a triathlon event. Rich became a recreation therapist and advocate for people who have suffered serious injury or medical conditions after being inspired by his own rehab team. Now he is the inspiration to many others and strives to show people how it is possible to reclaim your life after a massive change. Rich’s Bio The Person Rich brings a unique approach to Neurocore as he designed and built much of the space to reflect a calming, non-traditional atmosphere where someone with a neurological condition will have the opportunity to exercise in an accessible, warm and friendly environment. Having experienced a traumatic Spinal Cord Injury in 1992, which resulted in complete T4 Paraplegia, Rich brings a wealth of personal life experiences to individuals living with a neurological condition and the challenges that may accompany this life change. Re-evaluating his personal values led him to Brock University where he was a recipient of the prestigious Price Waterhouse Coopers Gold Medal for Entrepreneurial Excellence in 1998. He graduated with a Bachelor of Recreation and Leisure Studies in 1999 and went on to attain an Honour’s post-graduate certificate in Therapeutic Recreation from Georgian College in 2000. In 2013, Rich was awarded the Georgian College Board of Governors Distinguished Alumni Award. Finding and using the tools each of us has to create our own reality is an enormously powerful practice for bringing peace and fulfilment to our lives. Presence/Mindfulness is one of the most important, if not the most important, practices to discovering inner peace. For many of us, we have spent a lot of time trying to learn how to make our lives better, but have not yet started embodying and living the truth. This is to say that there is a marked difference between conceptually/mentally knowing something and practically/pragmatically living the truth through experience. Nina explains that in order for someone to actually start making a change in their life, the pain of the situation must be great enough that one is compelled to do something differently or the inspiration (i.e. the ‘why’) has to be strong enough to lead one in a new direction. Navigating the world as a human being is very strange, and often very scary. Our minds are an amazing tool that has evolved for our survival. However, sometimes, the mind can get stuck in old belief systems about ourselves, others, and the world around us. All too often we remain in the “hell we know” rather than risking making a change because we are afraid of the unknown - and the unknown, according to the mind, is potentially worse than the current known (even if the known right now isn’t great). However, if we take the leap of faith into the unknown, and allow ourselves to start experiencing new possibilities, we often find that we have the power to make amazing changes in our lives - changes that can lead to a wonderful life of peace, joy, and love. Nina and I also discuss how we grow and deppen through adversity and challenges in our lives. Life has a way of always putting new challenges in our lives - challenges that will force us to discover our strengths, and will ultimately lead to growth. In the same way that building muscle strength requires challenging those muscles with strenuous exercise (and continually pushing your limits), so too do we grow spiritually when faced with life challenges. We will often look back on challenges we’ve faced in the past and recognize that that challenge played an essential role in shaping who we are today. In this episode, Dr. Hilary Marusak and I discuss some of the latest neuroscientific research on how meditation affects various brain systems. Meditation has been used by humans for thousands of years as a tool for self-regulation, healing, strengthening, and resilience development. And recently, the modern scientific community has begun to investigate how meditation works, which brain systems are involved, and how it can be used therapeutically. The practice of meditation comes in many different forms, and can be applied to many different areas of a person’s life. Hilary’s research focuses primarily on how meditation affects kids, and how it can be used as a therapeutic tool for kids who are dealing with pain, illness, and emotional dysregulation. We also discuss some of the latest science of cannabis and how the scientific community are working towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship and interaction between cannabis and the endocannabinoid system. Just as meditation has been used by humans for thousands of years, so too has cannabis played a role in many healing traditions in human history. The exact nature of how cannabis affects the body and brain is still largely unstudied and is an exciting field of research. While using cannabis for medicinal purposes has started to rise in society (with the recent legalization), there are also some risks. As the body of scientific literature develops over time, our ability to make educated and informed decisions regarding cannabis use will also increase. Hilary and I also explore some of her research into how cannabis affects the developing brain (i.e. in fetuses, children, and teenagers). While these areas of study are still relatively new, it’s an exciting time to be in this field and studying the potential benefits and risks of cannabis.
