Introduced by MP Blaine Calkins, Bill C-368 aims to protect Canada's natural health industry by repealing sections 500-504 of Bill C-47, which inappropriately classified natural health products as "therapeutic products" alongside pharmaceutical drugs and applied sweeping Health Canada fees, fines, and powers that are not appropriate for or sustainable by the natural health industry. Why is Bill C-368 Necessary? The regulations from Bill C-47 threaten the viability of the natural health industry by imposing unnecessary barriers. Bill C-368 seeks to remove these burdens, keeping natural health products accessible and affordable for Canadians. Next Steps for Bill C-368 Passing Second Reading is a monumental milestone. It was a pleasure connecting with all of you during last week's Campaign Update call! For those who missed the live session, the video replay is now available. Since June 2023, we've been urging you to write letters to your MPs as a part of our ​"Pressure Your MP" Campaign​. Many of you took action, sent letters, and then shared the responses you received with the NHPPA team. MPs' response letters were often laden with Health Canada's scripted talking points and patronizing language, all while demonstrating a glaring lack of understanding regarding natural health products and regulations. Common questions arose: : "Should I respond to my MP?" and "What should I say?" On Tuesday December 5, 2023, MP Blaine Calkins of Red Deer—Lacombe, Alberta, took a decisive stand in support of our cause and officially tabled our Private Member's Bill in the House of Commons. The Bill was seconded by MP Brad Vis, and given the official Bill number C-368. This action by MPs Calkins and Vis effectively amplifies our voices, champions the cause for the natural health industry, and acts in the interests of every Canadian citizen that relies on natural health products to care for their health and well-being. While you've been busy writing letters and sending postcards to educate our MPs, Shawn Buckley has been busy drafting a new Private Member's Bill to repeal sections 500-504 of Bill C-47. Not only that, a critical part of this Private Member's Bill is to ensure that any penalties or orders that activated while the therapeutic product provisions applied to natural health products are undone. A Private Member's Bill is a Bill that can be introduced by any Member of Parliament that is not a Member of the Cabinet. After a Bill is introduced to Parliament, the Bill will be debated and voted on by other Members of Parliament, becoming law if it garners sufficient support. This Private Member's Bill, drafted by Shawn Buckley, is just one of our many initiatives. Remember, we are in this for the long haul and we will not lighten up until we've achieved our goals.
