AI in Healthcare Industry
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the healthcare industry by offering innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing the sector. In this article, we will explore how AI is being used in the healthcare industry to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and increase efficiency.
First, let's define what we mean by AI. AI refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as recognizing speech, identifying images, and making decisions. There are two main types of AI: narrow or weak AI, which is designed for a specific task, and general or strong AI, which has the ability to perform any intellectual task that a human can.
In the healthcare industry, AI is being used in a number of ways to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and increase efficiency. One of the most promising areas of AI in healthcare is the use of machine learning algorithms to analyze vast amounts of patient data. This data can include medical records, imaging scans, and other health-related data, and can be used to identify patterns and make predictions about a patient's health.
For example, AI algorithms can be used to identify patients who are at risk of developing certain diseases, such as diabetes or heart disease, based on their medical history and other health-related data. This information can then be used to develop personalized treatment plans, which can help to prevent the progression of these diseases and improve patient outcomes.
Another area where AI is being used in the healthcare industry is in the development of virtual assistants and chatbots. These AI-powered tools can be used to help patients manage their health, by providing them with information on their symptoms, treatment options, and other health-related topics. Virtual assistants and chatbots can also be used to triage patients, helping them to determine when they need to seek medical attention, and directing them to the most appropriate care based on their symptoms.
AI is also being used in the healthcare industry to reduce costs and increase efficiency. For example, AI algorithms can be used to automate administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and processing insurance claims, freeing up healthcare providers to focus on providing care to patients. Additionally, AI can be used to streamline clinical workflows, reducing the time it takes to complete tasks, and enabling healthcare providers to see more patients in less time.
One of the most promising areas of AI in the healthcare industry is the use of machine learning algorithms to improve the accuracy of medical diagnoses. For example, AI algorithms can be used to analyze medical imaging scans, such as X-rays and CT scans, to identify patterns and anomalies that may indicate the presence of a particular disease or condition. This information can then be used to improve the accuracy of medical diagnoses and reduce the number of misdiagnoses.
Another area where AI is being used in the healthcare industry is in the development of predictive models, which can be used to forecast the outcomes of various medical treatments. Predictive models can be used to help healthcare providers choose the best course of action for a particular patient, based on their medical history and other health-related data.

AI FOR GOOD - AI and Medicine
Artificial intelligence will change lives in many ways. Already, AI solutions are being deployed and having significant impact in healthcare. Daniel Kraft, MD, Chair for Medicine, Singularity University, shares his expert views on how significant this technology will be in finding the right diagnosis and therapies and shifting the ‘practice’ of medicine to the real ‘science’ of medicine.

DON'T GO INTO RADIOLOGY - AI is Taking Over
An artificial intelligence tool that reads chest X-rays without oversight from a radiologist got regulatory clearance in the European Union last week — a first for a fully autonomous medical imaging AI and the company Oxipit. It’s a big milestone for AI and likely to be contentious, as radiologists have spent the last few years pushing back on efforts to fully automate parts of their job.
However, is this going to help or hurt radiologists? In this video, I talk about this article and then also discuss my thoughts on artificial intelligence taking over Radiology.

IBM researchers bring AI to radiology
With advances in machine learning and artifiical intelligence, a new role is emerging for machines as intelligent assistants for radiologists in their clinical work flow. This recording of the Eyes of Watson demonstration from the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2016 annual meeting shows how a clinician can select a case from various sub-specialties, attempt to make a diagnosis, and see how a work-in-progress Watson technology attempts to assist the same case.
Eyes of Watson is a joint effort by RSNA and IBM Research to show how machines of the future may be able to assist radiologists.

AI in Medicine: Possible Applications and Potentials
#OER #MOOC #LearningPlatform
There are many possible applications and potentials for artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine. Symptom checking apps can help people with health conditions in their daily lives. MRI scans, which consist of a lot of different image data, can be processed with the help of artificial neural networks, thus patterns contained therein and diseases can be recognised. To handle data in a responsible and reflective manner is important.
