Many people who have been harmed by oppressors and perpetrators, have been told they should work on being a "peacemaker", as that is what God would want, and that will extend the olive branch to the oppressor and perpetrator, which could help show the kind of love and forgiveness that God has shown toward us. Unfortunately, that incorrect teaching has sounded so convincing, that many abuse survivors have been saddled with false guilt because they believed that to be a true understanding of what a peacemaker is, as referenced in Mt. 5::9, which has left them open to continued abuse, and left them secretly feeling that God is more concerned about "keeping the peace at any cost", than He is about their pain which resulted from the injustice they've suffered at the hands of unrepentant oppressors and perpetrators. Does God care about what you have suffered at the hands of oppressors, or is He more concerned about "keeping the peace." In this episode of 'Journey to Healing,' Jon K. Too often, those who've been harmed by willfully malicious and evil people (referred to as Oppressors in the Bible) are told they should simply forget about the injury, forget about the injustice, forget that the perpetrator has never confessed, repented, and changed. Instead, they are told to drop the matter, and move on. They are told that is is better to be a "peacemaker ," as that is apparently the pathway of spiritual blessing. But, is that true? Is that what it means to be a peacemaker, or is that a distortion of what Jesus meant? Simply put, that is a distortion of the "beatitudes," (found in Mt. 5 & Lk. 6). The question is, then, "What did Jesus actually mean by "Blessed are the poor, and the peacemakers, and how would the hearers have understood what He said?" For those who've been targeted by persecutors and oppressors, the special message Jesus gave in his first major sermon will be good news. The message will likely surprise and encourage you, especially if you've been told that to be "poor in spirit" is to be selfless, and a "peacemaker" is someone who doesn't make waves by speaking truth about an oppressor. The word 'peacemaker" (Mt. 5:9) has often been used to suggest that godly people are those who focus on creating and promoting "harmony" between two people, regardless of who the other person is or what they've done. It is unfortunately all too common for Survivors... those who've been deeply negatively impacted by extremely harmful and oppressive people... to be told that they need to forgive the perpetrator and "move on" no matter what, regardless of whether the perpetrator is genuinely repentant. Often, verses from the beginning of Mt. 5 will be referenced, to reinforce this misperception, suggesting that blessed are the poor, those who mourn, those who are humble, and the peacemakers, actually means that it is the responsibility of the Survivor to "let it go," and be "the bigger person", by dropping the issue... because that is supposed what God did for us. Sadly, that message is given to Survivors in churches and in counseling offices. Yet, that incorrect understanding of the "beatitudes" (Mt. 5: 3-12) will serve only to add insult to injury for the injured party, and enable the Oppressor to continue harming others. It is bad enough that dark special interests are working to mentally and emotionally manipulate troubled young gender-confused young people to begin seeking "Gender Affirming Care"... the path toward sterilization and amputation. It seems that the common teaching in churches and counseling offices is that the injured party should just "let bygones be bygones," regardless of whether the Oppressor or perpetrator has ever acknowledged, confessed, and taken responsibility for committing their offense. Thus, the message to the victimized party is that the responsibility lies upon them to just "let it go," in order to experience freedom and healing. But, is that actually correct teaching?
