Tim Wakefield, former Red Sox knuckleballer, dead at 57 from brain cancer
Beloved former Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield died Sunday morning at the age of 57, the team announced.
He was recently diagnosed with brain cancer, though it was revealed to the public without his permission on Tuesday by former teammate Curt Schilling.
“Tim’s kindness and indomitable spirit were as legendary as his knuckleball,” Red Sox owner John Henry said in a statement. “He not only captivated us on the field but was the rare athlete whose legacy extended beyond the record books to the countless lives he touched with his warmth and genuine spirit.
“He had a remarkable ability to uplift, inspire, and connect with others in a way that showed us the true definition of greatness. He embodied the very best of what it means to be a member of the Boston Red Sox and his loss is felt deeply by all of us.”

Undefeated Eagles remain work in progress following tough overtime win over Commanders
For the first month of the season, the Eagles have followed each victory with a vow that they are still a work in progress. This victory won't change that narrative, or the fretting of Eagles fans, or the -- almost certainly correct -- confidence among some that everything is going to be just fine, so fine that a traffic jam is a viable alternative to waiting for the Eagles to win. Most of the concern until Sunday was centered around Jalen Hurts, and the sputtering start to the passing game. Worry no more, Hurts threw for 319 yards, two touchdown and no interceptions. This was the best defensive front the Eagles had faced and they still ran for 104 yards. Even on Sunday, the Eagles had to be patient before the offense opened up, with Hurts starting the day with short passes on the opening drive and then hitting A.J. Brown on a 59-yard bomb and again for a 28-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
"I think tension and pressure build character," Hurt said after the game. "We needed a game like this for us. I think a win like this does so much for the spirit of a team because winning is not easy. Winning is hard."
The Eagles defense would likely agree. They were uneven, struggling early to get home on the pass rush (Howell was sacked five times), and allowing Howell to throw for 290 yards. This was the first game of the season in which they ceded more than 76 yards rushing (the Commanders had 107). Still, the Eagles held the Commanders without a point in the third quarter, when the Eagles mounted their rally, and they had the ultimate lucky break when Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin appeared to catch a pass from Howell on third down on the first possession of overtime. But McLaurin landed on Reed Blankenship's left forearm -- the bright red marks near his elbow attested to it -- which prevented him from landing in bounds and extending the drive. Instead, the Commanders had to punt. And they never got the ball back.
Not much has been easy for the Eagles through four weeks. Hurts got called for intentional grounding on the game-winning drive, eliciting another long groan in the stadium, one of 11 penalties that nearly undid the Eagles. And it was a taunting call on Brown, following his late-game touchdown that gave the Eagles a brief lead, which gave the Commanders favorable field position to start their game-tying drive. But the Eagles need to be battle-tested for a brutal stretch of games that begins in three weeks after winnable games against the Rams and Jets. Then, starting in mid-October and stretching for nearly two months, are games against the Dolphins, Commanders again, Cowboys, Chiefs, Bills, 49ers and the Cowboys again.
It is telling that after the game, Brown acknowledged he can't make mistakes like the taunting penalty. It was Hurts who told him on the sideline that he can't do it. That refining of the details is a form of progress that the Eagles are working on, too. They are far from a finished product, but the finish line for one of the league's most talented teams is far off.
"I would love to blow a team out," center Jason Kelce said. "But I'll take it. A win's a win. We're not playing our best ball right now, but we're still finding ways to win games."

Week 4- What happened in Falcons loss against Jackson Jaguars
After a breakout season in 2022, the Jacksonville Jaguars are still trying to find their stride this year. Jacksonville turned in a strong performance in Week 1, scoring 31 points in a win over the Indianapolis Colts. Since then, the team's offense hasn't looked as strong, leading to two straight losses.
Maybe some home cooking can get the Jags back on track. No, they aren't technically the London Jaguars, but the team has plenty of experience playing games in Europe. Week 4 will mark the 10th time the team has played in London. Perhaps that's all they need to get back on track.
The Atlanta Falcons, however, should prove to be a tough opponent. Led by rookie Bijan Robinson, Tyler Allgeier and a fantastic offensive line, the Falcons' running attack is among the best in the NFL. Robinson has already dazzled NFL fans stateside. Now, he'll get a chance to show out on a global stage.
Follow along as Yahoo Sports provides the latest scores, stats and injuries as the Jaguars take on the Falcons in London in Week 4.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a trailblazer in U.S. politics and the longest-serving woman in the Senate
WASHINGTON — Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., a vocal advocate of gun control measures who was known for trying to find common ground with Republicans during her three decades in the Senate, has died, her office confirmed on Friday.
She was 90.
“Senator Feinstein never backed away from a fight for what was just and right. At the same time, she was always willing to work with anyone, even those she disagreed with, if it meant bettering the lives of Californians or the betterment of our nation," her chief of staff, James Sauls, said in a statement. Feinstein's office did not share a cause of death, but she had been experiencing rapidly declining health in recent months.
“There are few women who can be called senator, chairman, mayor, wife, mom and grandmother. Senator Feinstein was a force of nature who made an incredible impact on our country and her home state."
Feinstein, the oldest member of the Senate, the longest-serving female senator and the longest-serving senator from California, announced in February that she planned to retire at the end of 2024, when her term is up. She had faced calls for her resignation over concerns about her health.
“In San Francisco, she showed enormous poise and courage in the wake of tragedy, and became a powerful voice for American values. Serving in the Senate together for more than 15 years, I had a front row seat to what Dianne was able to accomplish,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “Dianne made her mark on everything from national security to the environment to protecting civil liberties. She’s made history in so many ways, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations.”
Biden ordered flags to be lowered at the White House to honor Feinstein.

US Senator Dianne Feinstein dies at 90 - Politics News
Washington, DC – Dianne Feinstein, the longest-serving woman in the United States Senate, has died at age 90, US media outlets reported.
The cause of death was not immediately clear. The Associated Press and other news outlets reported that Feinstein died on Friday, citing unidentified sources.
The California lawmaker, who was the oldest member of the Senate, had suffered mounting health problems, including a battle with shingles.
Often described by supporters as a trailblazer in US politics, Feinstein had said earlier this year that she would not seek re-election in 2024.
“This is a sad day for California and the nation. [Senator] Feinstein was a champion for our state, and served as the voice of a political revolution for women,” California Congresswoman Barbara Lee said on social media on Friday.
Feinstein was elected in 1992 as the first woman to represent California in the US Senate and quickly rose to become a key figure in the Democratic Party, playing prominent roles on committees and passing key legislation.
In 2014, her office led efforts to release a report that detailed a torture programme run by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that saw individuals detained across the world in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
But the senator’s career had been derailed in recent years by health issues. That included reports that she suffered from short-term memory loss, spurring claims that she may be mentally unfit to serve.
Still, Feinstein, who faced calls to step down in recent months, consistently defended herself as an effective legislator.
“Even with a divided Congress, we can still pass bills that will improve lives. Each of us was sent here to solve problems,” she said in a statement in February announcing her decision not to run again next year.
“That’s what I’ve done for the last 30 years, and that’s what I plan to do for the next two years,” she said, pledging to finish her term in office. “My thanks to the people of California for allowing me to serve them.”
‘Quite a legacy’
Democratic National Committee (DNC) chairman Jaime Harrison said on Friday that he was “heartbroken” by Feinstein’s death. “She was a force for good and a titan of American politics,” he wrote in a social media post.
President Joe Biden, who served alongside Feinstein in the Senate for 15 years, described her as a “pioneering American” who was sharp, “tough”, and loyal.
“Dianne made her mark on everything from national security to the environment to protecting civil liberties. She’s made history in so many ways, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations,” Biden said in a statement.
Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane, reporting from Washington, DC, said Feinstein has left behind “quite a legacy”.
She was the first woman to serve as head of the Senate Intelligence Committee “and it’s hard to overstate just how important that position is”, Culhane said.
The senator faced criticism from some progressives over the years, including for supporting the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.
But in a major legislative achievement, Feinstein authored a bill that banned assault weapons in the US in 1994. The ban expired in 2004, but Democrats have been calling for it to be renewed amid frequent mass shootings.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, a vocal advocate of gun control, heaped praise on Feinstein on Friday.
“The modern anti-gun violence movement, now stronger than the gun lobby, would not exist but for Dianne,” he wrote on social media.
Many Republicans also lauded the late senator. Chuck Grassley, a key Republican who is now the oldest senator at age 90, said he had a “wonderful working relationship” with Feinstein when they served on various committees.
“Feinstein did an outstanding job representing the [people] of California,” he wrote.

Replacing the senator
Feinstein’s death will affect next year’s race to replace her in the Senate, as California Governor Gavin Newsom now needs to appoint someone to fill the vacancy until Feinstein’s term ends in January 2025.
The appointee would have a major advantage as an incumbent in next year’s election.
Lee, the California congresswoman, along with fellow Democratic House members Katie Porter and Adam Schiff are vying for the seat.
Newsom has already appointed California’s other senator – Alex Padilla – to replace Kamala Harris, who vacated the seat in 2021 to serve as Biden’s vice president.
The governor had previously said that he would tap a Black woman to succeed Feinstein should she fail to finish her term.

Week 5 college football preview- USC heads to Boulder; Duke gets the big stage
College football fans may just now be recovering after an electric Week 4 slate.
With six Top 25 games on the schedule, fans of the sport could watch high-caliber matchups deep into the night.
While Week 5 does not have the volume of Top 25 games on the schedule, there are massive implications in a number of matchups.
The Colorado Buffaloes are looking to prove their 3-0 start under Deion Sanders is more indicative of where they’re heading than the smackdown Oregon laid on them in Week 4, Texas is attempting to avoid a classic "trap game" before facing Oklahoma next week, and Duke has a chance to start the year 5-0 for the first time since 1994.
College football fans will learn a thing or two on the last Saturday of September.
Let’s take a look at a few games to be aware of in Week 5.
Colorado vs. No. 8 USC – Noon ET
The Buffaloes face their first test of adversity after being blown off the field by the Oregon Ducks in Week 4.
Colorado was completely outmatched in Deion Sanders’ Pac-12 debut, heading into halftime down 35-0.
"Good old-fashioned butt-kicking," Sanders said afterward. "No excuses, no nothing."
It doesn’t get any easier this week for the Buffaloes as they welcome the reigning Heisman Trophy winner to Boulder for a 10 a.m. MT kickoff.
Caleb Williams and USC are coming off a relatively unimpressive victory over ASU. The Trojans lead the country in points per game (55.0) and are third in the nation in yards per game (569.3).
JETS' AARON RODGERS SAYS DEION SANDERS 'CREATED A LOT OF BUZZ' THAT CAUSED SOME TO WANT TO SEE HIM 'FALL
"The kid is a playmaker," Sanders said of Williams. "He’s the epitome of class and confidence in what he brings to the table. He makes plays. He makes that team go. He’s a handful."
Colorado’s defense has struggled — to put it mildly — in the first four weeks, allowing the most points and yards per game in the Pac-12.
But Colorado has playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, and USC’s defense has been an issue since Lincoln Riley took over.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo- LIVE updates, official results
Undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is scheduled to defend his titles against Jermell Charlo on pay-per-view Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The featured bouts on the card begin at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. The main event will take place later in the show.
Boxing Junkie will post round-by-round analysis and the result of the main event immediately after it ends. We’ll also post the results of other featured bouts. Simply return to this post and refresh when the time comes.
Full coverage – a fight story, photo gallery and analysis – will follow on separate posts the night of the fight and the following day.
Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) is coming off three consecutive subpar performances, a loss to Dmitry Bivol and so-so decisions over Gennadiy Golovkin and John Ryder that have led many to suggest the Mexican star is in decline.
He said he has struggled because of injures and is fully healthy now, which he insists will be reflected in his performance on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs), the undisputed 154-pound champ, is moving up two divisions to challenge Alvarez. The Houston fighter is coming off a 10th-round knockout of Brian Castano in their rematch 16 months ago.
Enjoy the fights!

LIVE - Man linked to Tupac shooting arrested by Las Vegas police
Last living suspect in 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur indicted in Las Vegas on murder charge
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A man who prosecutors say ordered the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur was arrested and charged with murder Friday in a long-awaited breakthrough in one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries.
Duane “Keffe D” Davis has long been known to investigators as one of four suspects identified early in the investigation. He isn’t the accused gunman but was described as the group’s ringleader by authorities Friday at a news conference and in court. In Nevada you can be charged with a crime, including murder, if you help someone commit the crime.
“Duane Davis was the shot caller for this group of individuals that committed this crime,” said Las Vegas police homicide Lt. Jason Johansson, “and he orchestrated the plan that was carried out.”
Davis himself has admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” that he provided the gun used in the drive-by shooting.
Authorities said Friday that Davis’ own public comments revived the investigation.
Davis, now 60, was arrested early Friday while on a walk near his home on the outskirts of Las Vegas, hours before prosecutors announced in court that a Nevada grand jury had indicted the self-described “gangster” on one count of murder with a deadly weapon. He is due in court next week.
The grand jury also voted to add a sentencing enhancement to the murder charge for gang activity that could add up to 20 additional years if he’s convicted.
