The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Playthrough (Actual N64 Capture) - Part 1
This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through my gold cartridge copy (Version 1.0) of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii Virtual Console. This footage was captured directly from my Nintendo 64 using an actual Ocarina of Time cartridge.
I received the Collector's Edition gold cartridge copy of Ocarina of Time on Christmas Day in 1998 and proceeded to play through the game many, many times. That "Mike" file in the beginning of the video is actually my first save file that I created back in 1998. This is probably my fourth favorite Zelda game behind the Zelda 1, 2, and a Link to the Past. It's definitely my favorite 3D Zelda game.
As some people are probably aware, Nintendo released different versions of Ocarina of Time because it decided to fix certain glitches and change other things such as in-game images and music. So if you play this game on the Virtual Console or the GameCube, you will get a slightly different experience compared to what people had back at launch in 1998.
Aside from the gold paint and the Collector's Edition box, there is nothing unique about the gold cartridge version of Ocarina of Time. However, owning a gold cartridge pretty much ensures that you have the original version of the game (Version 1.0), which features the original Fire Temple music with the Muslim chant, red blood for Ganon, and some other things such as odd glitches.
I also own the special Master Quest bonus disc that was released for the GameCube, and although the GameCube re-release plays at a higher resolution (640x480 compared to 320x240 on the N64), I prefer my N64 cartridge because I don't like the altered Fire Temple music in the later versions of the game or the emulation issues that arise with trying to use a GameCube controller to replicate the N64 controller's analog stick. Hopefully you'll enjoy watching footage of the original version of the game as it looks and plays on a real Nintendo 64.
In this first part I created a new save file and explored the Kokiri Forest before completing the first dungeon, Inside the Deku Tree.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the official N64 S-video cable. I used a Toshiba model D-R550 DVD Recorder to upconvert the N64's native 240p signal to 480i so that the Hauppauge could capture the console's audio/video signal.

Columns - Flash Mode (3DS Virtual Console)
This is a capture of me playing the Flash mode of Columns for the Sega Game Gear. This is not an emulator. This is being played on the 3DS Virtual Console and recorded directly from my New 3DS XL using the aftermarket capture kit manufactured by Katsukity and installed/sold by Merki.
I felt like uploading some more Game Gear footage, so here’s Sega’s classic competitor to Tetris – Columns. Sega initially bundled this game with the Game Gear in 1991 to help compete with the Game Boy, but I don’t think it achieved the sales numbers they were looking for since it was quickly replaced by Sonic the Hedgehog (and then Sonic 2, which is possibly the best-selling pack-in game for the system).
Shortly before Nintendo shut down new eShop purchases on the 3DS, I decided to buy some remaining Game Gear games for the Virtual Console that I hadn’t gotten around to (excluding RPGs, of course). I generally like puzzle games due to my childhood experience with Tetris, Tetris 2, Dr. Mario, Yoshi, Yoshi’s Cookie, and Tetris Attack, and I have a fascination with the Game Gear, so I picked up Columns before the opportunity escaped me.
This is actually a pretty good puzzle game. The Flash mode requires you to wipe out a single flashing block buried at the bottom of the pile before time runs out, so it’s similar to Tetris 2. But unlike Tetris 2, the speed starts to increase as you wipe out blocks, so you don’t want to waste much time clearing unnecessary blocks if you can help it.
While excellent, the Flash mode is too limited since the game ends as soon as you complete a level (no matter which level you pick) instead of simply starting the next level afterward. Since the game would have ended anyway as soon as I completed a level, I just went with the highest (level 9) and managed to beat it. There was a bit of slop (unintended chains) on my part, but that’s the nature of the game.
One neat thing about Columns is that you can change the look of the blocks, so I went with the fruit pattern, which is I think is neat.

This is actually a pretty good puzzle game. It’s closest in design to Dr. Mario, except if you didn’t have to wipe out germs and instead only had to manage pills. In Columns’ Original mode you have to match at least three of kind horizontally, vertically, or even diagonally as the block-falling speed keeps increasing. You can also form chains, similar to Dr. Mario or Tetris Attack. So this is like Tetris’ standard endless mode.
I hadn’t played this game too much before this and I certainly hadn’t it made it this far before, so I was a little surprised when the bomb blocks suddenly dropped and wiped out an entire category. However, level 8 proved to be a little too brutal and my brain shut off at that point. I’m not an expert puzzle game player, but I think I did alright and showed off how this mode works.

Super Mario 64 Playthrough (Actual N64 Capture) - Part 1
This is part 1 of my capture of me playing through Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64. This is not an emulator and was not played on the Wii or Wii U Virtual Console. This footage was recorded directly from my Nintendo 64 using a real Super Mario 64 cartridge. I'm collecting all 120 stars in the game.
This game has the distinction of being the first game that I was ever hyped for before its release. I started my Nintendo Power subscription in 1993, so I knew all about Super Mario 64 and the Nintendo 64 well before their release, and I couldn't stop thinking about them.
I definitely wanted a Nintendo 64 on its launch day back in 1996, but since I was 12 at the time, I had no money and had to wait until Christmas. However, a few months after the September launch I managed to play Super Mario 64 at Sears. There was a line of about five or six kids in front of the system, but I managed to get my turn, and I was instantly blown away. That was the only time I got to play the game (or the system) before Christmas.
The Nintendo 64 actually sold out during its initial release here in the U.S., so my mother had a lot of trouble finding one. However, shortly before Christmas, she headed over to Best Buy in the hopes of getting a system, and lucky for her (and me), they had some in stock. So I managed to receive the system, Super Mario 64 and Wave Race 64 for Christmas. I spent that entire holiday season playing through both games.
Since this was one of the earliest full-3D console games, I naturally got lost in the worlds and had trouble figuring out where to go. But that only made it more exciting for me. I spent a lot of time wandering around the levels and seeing what I could discover. I also picked up the official Player's Guide to help me get all 120 stars. I'm using that same guide once again to make this playthrough more efficient.
I have beaten this game several times, and I still find it fun to this day because of the fast-paced physics and the open-ended design. This game is also fun to play with different controllers, so I'm using my arcade-style joystick for this playthrough.
This is being played on my original cartridge from 1996. That first save file with 120 stars is actually my original save file from that Christmas. I've kept it all these years.
I'll be keeping track of the stars I obtain in each part.
Stars obtained in this video:
Bob-omb Battlefield:
Star 1 - Big Bob-omb on the Summit - 2:40
Star 2 - Footrace With Koopa the Quick - 7:30

Star 4 - Find the 8 Red Coins - 11:33
Whomp's Fortress:

Bowser in the Dark World:

Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the official N64 S-video cable. I used a Toshiba model D-R550 DVD Recorder to upconvert the N64's native 240p signal to 480i so that the Hauppauge could capture the console's audio/video signal.
I'm using an Arcade Shark joystick.
