Austin Knudsen was sworn in as Montana’s 25th Attorney General in January 2021. He is a 5th generation Montanan who grew up a farm and ranch kid in Northeast Montana. Austin received his undergraduate degree from Montana State University and his law degree from the University of Montana. He opened his own law firm in Culbertson and served as Speaker of the House before running for county attorney in Roosevelt County, where he prosecuted criminals and saw the drug and crime issues up close. Living in upstate New York, Trish found a desperate need for education in firearms training after working as a pistol licensing clerk in her hometown. She got involved locally and eventually created the first ever Women’s Concealed Carry Holster Fashion Show held in 2012 and 2014. In its second year, it drew media attention and over 400 spectators. She felt like “that girl” early in her training in New York and went on a mission to make sure no one gets left behind on her watch. During that time is when Lora and Trish paths crossed. The story unfolds in the interview and a great friendship blossomed and grew over the years. In this interview we talk about that story as well as working with special need clients, how Trish overcame adversity and what she does now to continue, in her 60s, to stay physically and mentally healthy. We’ll also learn about the development of a select group of women in southwest Montana, the Montana Maggies, why that group is so dear to us and how/why it was formed. Trish has over 800 certificate hours of training from Sig Academy, Gunsite Academy, Gabby Franco, Kate Miculek, Adam Winch, Mike Seeklander, Dave Jenkins, Scott Jedlinski, Masad Ayoob, Andrew Branch and many others. Jonathan Heslep grew up in the mountains of southwest Montana. He has worked in Emergency Services since he was 18 years old, volunteering at three different local departments since 2008. He is currently a Captain/EMT with the Montana City Volunteer Fire Department. He began his professional career with the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation as a wildland firefighter in 2011, where he still works as the Fire Operations Specialist, overseeing the Helena Unit engine crews. Jonathan also serves on the Emmanuel Church Security Team and has provided medical classes to several churches in the Helena area. Gary Marbut has been working over the last 30 years, actively working through the non-profit, Montana Shooting Sports Association to get over 70 pro-gun and pro-hunting bills enacted into law in the state of Montana. A former Army veteran and Montana rancher, Marbut has devoted his life to preserving what he describes as our cornerstone of liberty, our right to keep and bear arms. He has also served as a firefighter and Advanced Life Support Paramedic in Alaska and has seen first hand the trauma caused by improper use of firearms. Gary is a former firearms instructor in both pistol and rifle, graduating over 6000 students qualifying them for a Montana Concealed Carry Permit. He was also the Director and is the current Secretary of the 4000 member Western Montana Fish and Game Association and was appointed by two Montana governors to the Governor's Concealed Weapon Permit Advisory Council. In 2009 he was awarded the National Grassroots Activist of the Year by the Second Amendment Foundation. He was a also the recipient of the Saint Gabriel Possenti Medal for “Defenders of the Faith”, awarded to one to three persons each year for exceptional contributions to U.S. gun owners - selected and awarded by the Second Amendment Foundation at the national Gun Rights Policy Conference. He is the author of Gun Laws in Montana, now in it’s 5th edition as well as an e-book called Stories Worth Telling which has a 5 star review on Amazon. (So his stories must be worth telling.) And he is the developer of the Be Safe gun safety program for 1st through 5th grade children, distributed to every elementary school in Montana. Christian Griffith is an extreme athlete with extreme grit. As a survivor of child sexual abuse, he has made it his mission to be an advocate for children. In 2018, he ran 3,142 miles across the United States from NY to CA (30 miles a day for 5 months straight) to inspire those who have been abused to break their silence and to raise $1 million to prevent and treat child abuse. He’s earned his 50-mile bib at World's Toughest Mudder on CBS, took a beating on American Ninja Warrior on NBC, and survived Hell as a finisher on THE SELECTION: Special Operations Experiment, on History Channel. He has also successfully completed the Fuego Y Agua 100K Trail Ultramarathon in Nicaragua more times (3) than anyone else in the history of the race. Christian says that he wants to prove that your past does not have to be your future. “I’m not proud of who I have been in the past, but through my current relationships, EMDR therapy and a solid dedication to change, I have tuned things around. Lisa grew up with firearms, having shot her first gun at age 5, with her dad’s help. Lisa purchased a gun for self-defense at age 25, after being in an abusive relationship. She eventually let her permit expire. In 2010, after multiple close call situations while living in the Portland area, Lisa decided to purchase a handgun again, for personal protection and everyday carry. She began regular training with her firearm and eventually came across a ladies-only group that she began shooting with. After shooting for a few years, Lisa began teaching friends how to shoot. Lisa quickly realized she had a knack for working with people and a passion for helping others learn to protect themselves. She decided to focus her energy on teaching other civilians how to defend themselves.
In 2018, Lisa established her company, Pacwest Defense Firearms Training. That year she also began working part-time as a range safety officer and instructor at a local gun club, actively teaching with the club’s practical application team. She helps teach a new member evaluation class that focuses on marksmanship and safety, as well as Handgun Fundamentals, Action Shooting Fundamentals, Action Range Certification classes, Concealed Handgun Classes, and more. In 2019 Lisa began volunteering her time as a co-leader with another female instructor for her local ladies-only shooting group.
In May 2020, Lisa began working full-time as the Chief Range Safety Officer at the same gun club. She now manages a team of 20 RSO's and has brought multiple women onto that team. In addition to this, Lisa has continued teaching, while also expanding her knowledge and skills as a shooter and instructor.
In 2021 Lisa became a Chapter Facilitator for A Girl & a Gun where she hosts sessions in Sherwood, OR. In her spare time, Lisa enjoys shooting at local competitions, focusing primarily on Speed Steel and IDPA. www.PacWestDefense.com

Practical Strategies in the Pursuit of Excellence | 2X World Champion Shooter, Kyle Schmidt Kyle Schmidt is a retired police officer of over 24 years with the Tempe AZ Police Department. There he served as patrol officer, computer forensics detective, recruit training officer, patrol sergeant and in addition served 7 years as a member of the SWAT team. During his final 15 years of service, he was the primary firearms instructor in rifle, pistol and shotgun for the department. In 1999, Kyle began shooting competitively at a local police competition and was highly encouraged by the department instructors to continue. Although he did not place very well in that first match, he was hooked and his interest/obsession with competitive shooting was born. Fortunately, living in Arizona, Kyle had access to one of the most active competitive shooting facilities in the world, The Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club. Not a week goes by without numerous types of competitive shooting events taking place. In fact, during most months there are no less than 10 organized competitive shooting matches, and that is just practical pistol alone. During Kyle’s competitive shooting experience, he has participated in several different competitive shooting disciplines including: USPSA, IDPA, NRA Action Pistol, NRA PPC, USPSA Multigun, and NRA Bullseye During his 25 year career, Kyle has earned multiple National Championships as well as competing Internationally with Rob Leatham on Team USA in the World Action Pistol Championship in Germany in 2012, where his team earned a Gold Medal. Kyle also enjoys other sports such as trail running and is currently training to compete in a half marathon. JT started Rev-Tac in 2010 as a part-time passion for preparing both the public and his peers for surviving critical incidents. His 20+ year service to this country has provided real-world experience that translates into success on life's battlefields. As a successful career sniper, JT is currently leading multiple sniper teams for a Airborne Infantry Unit. He has been his sniper team's medic for many years as well as a paid city firefighter/medic for 11 years. JT has multiple deployments in support of the global war on terror, as well as supporting continental US missions from floods to riots. He dabbled in law-enforcement for a few years before realizing that wasn't the direction he wanted to go but remains passionate about preparing this country's law enforcement for success under extreme pressure. His dedication to his craft lead him to instruct at one of the US Army's premiere sniper schools for a few years before taking Rev-Tac full-time in 2015. JT loves teaching long-range precision, carbine classes and defensive pistol. Tonya currently works in Federal Law Enforcement and spends her off-time teaching at Rev-Tac. She has worked in juvenile detention, adult prisons and adult probation. She has studied firearms, verbal judo, and has been training in firearms for many years. Tonya is a USCCA and NRA certified instructor but is our expert in our De-Escalation Courses and Personal Defense Courses for women.
