The first thing I would suggest is to look up a good age appropriate reading list. I’m not big on what Charlotte Mason refers to as twaddle books. These books have zero substance-no character building qualities, no educational value, they’re just busy books. Read good quality books! Living books are books that are engaging and educational. These books teach a wide range of subjects from science, history, geography and they are fun to read over and over again. I like the reading list on amble side online.com

Form a small book club. Take turns with one or two families choosing a book that you love to encourage them to read. Then get your kids together to discuss what their favorite parts of the book were. You can even go a step further and have a themed book party after reading the book. This brings readers together and makes reading fun because they know their friends are reading the same book and they will have someone to talk about it with.

My third tip brings me to todays sponsor. EPIC Epic is a digital reading platform with over 40,000 popular high quality books from over 250 publishers. I love epic because each of my children has their own profile customized to their age and interests. I can see what books my children read, how much time they spent reading, and which books they marked as favorites. I can even assign books for my children to read. There are comprehension quizzes at the end of the book too! Kids get to pick a digital reading buddy and earn prizes for their buddy as they read. Epic has audio books, read to me books, and e books. Some of our favorites are the National Geogrphic series, and the cat ninja series.

Good ol graphic novels. Graphic novels are great because they are pretty quick reads. My favorite graphic novel to read with my kids hands down is the Action Bible. I love this! What better way to read the Bible than to read it with live action pictures? My kids love spending time in the action bible-and even if they are struggling to read the comment bubbles they are understanding the story based on the graphics.

Last but definitely not least-read together. Read picture books out loud. One of my favorite things to do with my kids is to treat them to a special night where I can surprise them and let them stay up late. We stay up an hour or so later than usual and read picture books. Talk about them, laugh about them, snuggle up in bed and relax while they listen to some of their favorites and some new books.

I hope you find these five tips useful in your homeschool. Thank you to Ashley from joyful noise learning for hosting this collaboration.

That’s it for me today guys. Remember, Not everyday is easy but everyday is a blessing. Have a blessed day!
