Portland mayor wants to restore police funding amid violent crime wave after cutting funds last year. Do you remember all that cancel culture that followed the Portland riots which caused, according to newsweek(last Sept), persisted for nearly 80 nights, the city has seen some 550 arrests and over $20 million in damages and lost revenue for downtown businesses. This was LAST YEAR. This year, right now the Portland riots are focused on the courthouse and federal buildings. Fox reported just last Feb 2nd that the riots caused 2.3M of damages. The mayor refused Trump's offer of Federal help. Even worse, they voted to DEFUND the police because of virtual signaling. Guess what? NOW, last Saturday the 13th, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) urged city lawmakers this week to restore some funding for the Portland Police Department as law enforcement there battles violent crime. That is because the city leaders last June voted to cut nearly $16 million from the police budget, reductions that included the elimination of a gun violence reduction unit.(GVRU) The Associated Press reported that, “The cuts came amid racial justice protests following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis." KATU tv station also reported the money would allow the Portland Police Department to hire more detectives and reestablish a patrol division focused on gun violence. “Some of the money, about $160,000, covers positions and programs within the Office of Violence Prevention for services that target victims of gun violence and others at high risk of gun violence. The biggest portion of the money, just under $1.5 million, would cover five additional detectives for deadly shootings and a uniformed patrol team for gun violence within the police bureau.”
Elmer Yarborough, whose nephew was murdered in Portland just one month after the GRVT was disbanded, told the AP that gun violence victims would be alive today had the unit not been eliminated. According to AP,” J.W. Matt Hennessee, chairman of Inter-Faith Peace & Action Collaborative, said, "We believe very strongly that it is important to intercede at this point, and appeal to the city to work with us and and to hear us, as it relates to the need for the tide to be stemmed with the number of shootings on the street." Meanwhile, crimes in Portland is so bad that the numbers are shocking. AP reported “As of March 8, there have been 278 shootings in the Portland region, 58 people have been injured from shootings, and there have been 17 gun-related homicides, according to the mayor’s office. At the current pace, shootings and homicides are on track to surpass last year’s totals.“ KATU noted,”In fact, Portland did not reach 20 homicides until mid-July last year.” Will they learn their lessons that quick, rash culture cancelling without due process actually costs them lives that are irreplaceable, more money in the long run to “fix” or undo their decisions. SO what do they do with the consquences of cancelling? Who will cover the costs? Oh let's tax us, the people! How much more will we pay throughout our lives to pay for their mistakes? Time shall tell...
