Sharpton: “House Representative Walberg of Michigan appeared to suggest that nuclear weapons should be dropped on Gaza. His office maintains that he was speaking metaphorically. This begs the question, with all the criticism against President Biden, if Trump were in power right now, wouldn’t the support have been even more one-sided, pro-Israel?”
JOLLY: “Yeah, it absolutely would be, which I think is the critical point for the slice of the electorate who continues to express concerns about Joe Biden’s handling of the issue in the Middle East, the war in the Middle East. And I would say, look, if we take a step back, that the overwhelming U.S. policy and foreign policy of the Biden Administration remains very much in lockstep with Israel, and they recognize the attack on Israel as an act of war by Hamas, and they recognize Israel’s sovereignty to defend themselves, but it is undeniable, rev, the shift we have seen in our domestic politics, away from just accepting that premise. There are now hard questions about that alliance, and you see the Biden Administration trying to address them. So, look, among the general election profile, this is likely not something to influence the typical voter, but this election requires building a coalition that does include the slice of people that you saw protesting outside Radio City Music Hall and other places that have expressed grave concern. For them the question is, this is a binary race, do you really think that Donald Trump would be listening to you more and trying to influence Israel and Netanyahu’s behavior? The answer is clear, it is a resounding no. Joe Biden’s administration has understood these concern from the beginning, and while still representing a very pro-Israel foreign policy, is trying to accommodate the humanitarian concerns that so many people have expressed reservations about.”
Sharpton: “Well, I have been the one advocating a two-state solution for decades, and I would denounce what happened, by the way, on October 7th, and denounce what is going on in Gaza, that has killed over 30,000 people, but Donald Trump has never talked about doing anything near trying to solve this in a two-state way and has absolutely been an avid supporter of Netanyahu.”
