"Ramayan" is one of the most revered and celebrated epics in Hindu mythology. Composed by the ancient sage Valmiki, it is considered one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the "Mahabharata." The Ramayana consists of about 24,000 verses and is divided into seven books, each known as a "Kanda."

The epic narrates the life and adventures of Lord Rama, an avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, and his divine consort Sita, along with his loyal brother Lakshmana and the faithful devotee Hanuman. The story revolves around the central theme of dharma (duty/righteousness) and the triumph of good over evil.

The main storyline follows the exile of Prince Rama from his kingdom of Ayodhya due to political intrigue. Accompanied by his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, Rama spends fourteen years in the forest, facing numerous challenges and battles against the demon king Ravana and his forces.

Key events in the Ramayana include Sita's abduction by Ravana, the construction of a bridge (known as "Ram Setu") to Lanka (Ravana's kingdom), the war between Rama's army and Ravana's demons, and the eventual rescue of Sita. The epic culminates in the righteous victory of Rama, the destruction of evil forces, and the return of Rama to Ayodhya, where he is crowned as the rightful king.

The Ramayana has been retold and adapted in various forms across different cultures and languages over the centuries, including literature, theater, dance, music, and visual arts. It continues to be a source of moral and spiritual guidance, emphasizing the virtues of honor, loyalty, devotion, and righteousness.
