From Ramana Maharshi's booklet "Who Am I?"

Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950), born Venkataraman Iyer, was a revered Indian sage and spiritual teacher who left an indelible mark on the world. His life unfolded in two distinct chapters.

Early Life (1879-1895): Born into a devout Brahmin family in South India, Ramana displayed an introspective nature from a young age. While seemingly ordinary, accounts suggest he had mystical experiences even in his childhood.

Spiritual Awakening (1895): At the tender age of 16, Ramana underwent a profound spiritual awakening. He described a sudden and intense fear of death, which led him to contemplate the nature of the Self. This experience transformed him, and he soon left home for Arunachala, a sacred mountain in South India, considered the embodiment of Lord Shiva.

Life at Arunachala (1896-1950): Ramana spent most of his remaining years living near Arunachala. Initially, he practiced intense austerities and meditation in silence, often in caves or temples. Over time, devotees flocked to him, seeking his guidance. Despite his lack of formal education, Ramana's profound wisdom and gentle demeanor shone through.

Teachings: Ramana's central teaching revolved around Atma Vichara, or "Self-inquiry." He emphasized the importance of questioning "Who am I?" to peel back the layers of the mind and discover the true Self, the unchanging essence of our being. His teachings resonated deeply with seekers from all walks of life, regardless of religion or background.

Legacy: Ramana Maharshi is considered a towering figure in Advaita Vedanta, a school of Hindu philosophy that emphasizes the non-duality of the Self and Brahman (ultimate reality). His life and teachings continue to inspire millions around the world, offering a simple yet powerful path towards self-realization and lasting peace.
