The growing shivalingam of Khajuraho Temple

This temple was built in 9th century.

It is believed to be the only alive shivling because it grows approximately 1inch every year and is presently about 9 ft tall above ground.

Tourism department and Temple priests measure it every year on Kartik Purnima, and it is believed to Grow above and below the ground level symmetrically.

Story behind this Shivling :

God Shiva (Mahadev) had Markand Mani which he gave to Yudhishthir (One of the Pandavas). He gave it to Matang Rishi who then gave it to Harshvardhan.

He buried it in the ground, since there was no one to take care of it and a shivling started developing around the mani.

Since the mani was with Matang Rishi, it was named Matangeshwar.

Due to the enormous power of this mani, the shivling grows every year just like a living human grows and is believed that even today the Mani lies below the enormous Shivling.

Beliefs :

1. Temples priest say it is symbolic of Kalyuga, the top is growing towards Swarg-lok and the bottom towards Patal-lok, when it reaches Patal-lok Kalyuga will end.

2. It is believed that Bholenath married Maa Parvati in this Temple.
