Israel’s Xmas Message from Stephen Fry vs Alexei Sayle’s alternative!

The Israel connections of Stephen Fry's awful Xmas message meant that Alexei Sayle provided the real alternative this year.
Right, so I hope everyone watching had a very Happy Christmas, so much has happened both here and in the Middle East that warrants some coverage so we’d better get into it and let’s start with Christmas messages, though forget Charles’ offering of his first King’s Speech, I’m not interested in whatever hypocrisy comes from his untaxed and unelected lips, I’m looking at the alternatives that were put on offer, two very different videos both put on by two older Jewish comedians, though with decidedly different backgrounds and most certainly different messages. Stephen Fry, a man who invokes in me at least memories of Blackadder and Fry and Laurie vs Alexei Sayle, one of Liverpool’s finest sons and the Young Ones, but also of social activism and social justice. Both gave us alternative Christmas messages, but only one was an actual alternative to anything, the other was straight out of Israel and there’s evidence of that now too.
Right, so Happy Christmas folks, hope you had a good one, though depending on which if these messages you’ve watched, perhaps like me it was both, perhaps neither as you don’t go in for those things, but if the latter is the case, there is definitely one here you want to go and see and if you haven’t seen Alexei Sayle’s four minutes of both hilarious and hard hitting alternative messaging, you absolutely must make an exception for it. My mother always used to say every comedian was a genius, they had to be to be both funny and quick and indeed right now to find the humour in the darkest of times and I totally agree with her, but it very much depends on who you find funny I guess, but their humour also has to find the truth of the matter, it has to be honest to work and for the pro Palestine Jew Alexei Sayle, with his comfy chair in front of a large open fire, set off by a couple of poinsettias, the set up was there, but what came next was every bit an alternative.
Sayle starts by talking about how he shies away from politics and social injustice and that finding humour in the darkest of times is what the job is and as you all know now I agree with that, it’s the genius of the comedian I feel to be able to do that, but that doesn’t exclude people from social justice and activism either. I’m not going to describe every bit of the video, you absolutely need to go and watch it, it is brilliant in it’s brutal honesty mixed with that humour of what we are seeing on all matter of elderly Jewish comedians and what they talk about, vs him, as an elderly Jewish comedian too, bucking the trend in effect by saying he wants a go, only he does it right. A cat saying victory to Palestine at the start sets the tone for all that follows in Sayle’s typically caustic style. Taking apart the establishment narratives over Gaza, tearing apart both the Tories and Labour over that, he speaks of Bethlehem in the West Bank not celebrating Christmas, the birth of a baby there 2000 years ago the reason why we as Christians celebrate Christmas of course and the fact they didn’t this year.
