While in Mexico City I crossed paths with a traditional healing ceremony taking place in Tenotchitlan, which was the ancient capital of the Aztec civilization before being conquered by the Spanish and becoming Mexico.
The ceremony is called a ‘limpia’ meaning "cleansing," and this cleansing can come in a variety of forms. Similar to the practice called "smudging" of the Native Americans of North America, a person in need of a limpia is looking to "clean off" bad energy, spiritual imbalance, mental clarity, rid of stress, or other forms of physical and mental illness brought on by anything from envy, anger to overexposure to heat or cold. The usage of herbs gives natural force to the body so that the spirit receives it's strength and effect.

Sometimes prayers mention Catholic saints; the Nahuas who are the original settler's of these lands were suppressed by the Spanish during and after the conquest, and they incorporate Catholic phrases and personages into their practices in order to keep their spiritual tradition alive and well under their new rulers or else if the invaders were to see the ancient practice they would kill them as their main purpose was to rid of the culture and impose the beliefs by way of the Vatican and Spanish crown.

The intention of the limpia is to actually draw out illness and negative forces into the objects used (the herbs or other items), and the cleansing prayer brings healing energy into the person to replace this negativity. Other times, the limpia is used to draw a person's soul back into their body after extreme shock or other intense emotion. In special cases, and often for children, a fresh whole egg is held by the curandero (curer) and circled gently over the body not only is cleansing and considered highly effective at drawing out negativity, but also as a helpful diagnostic tool that I can personally vouch having witnessed this in person by way of a family member. After use, the ritual objects now hold the person's illness or negativity and are burned or buried.

Ancient spiritual and medicinal practices are found thru all ancient civilizations in one form or another, and countries like China, India and Mexico are well alive and active in the practices to bring healing and connection to our modern lives. After all, the Mexican ancestors brought us corn, tomatoes and chocolate.
