Transcendence: Witnessing a Sky Burial Ritual "Spiritual Passage"
Sky burials are a traditional funerary practice observed in certain cultures, notably in parts of Tibet, Mongolia, and some regions of China. In this ritual, the deceased person's body is placed atop a high location, often a mountain or elevated area, exposed to the elements and scavenger birds, predominantly vultures.
Rather than burying or cremating the body, the belief behind a sky burial is rooted in the idea of the transmigration of the soul. It is thought that by offering the body to be consumed by birds, particularly vultures, the soul is liberated from the physical form and can move on to its next spiritual journey.
The practice holds deep spiritual and religious significance, honoring the cycle of life and death while also offering sustenance to wildlife. Sky burials are conducted following specific rituals and traditions, respecting the deceased and their spiritual beliefs.
