Yehudah Halevi, one of the greatest Hebrew poets, wrote a book called “Kuzari”. This book is based on the story of the Khazarian Empire. The king of the Khazars converted to Judaism in the latter half of the first millennium. The king chose Judaism for political reasons. Judaism kept the Khazars independent of Christian and Muslim powers. Eventually the Prince of Kiev defeated the Khazars and the kingdom was all but forgotten. Yehudah Halevi set out for the land of Israel but his trail was lost. The existence of Khazarian empire has been confirmed through letters that were discovered in The Cairo Geniza.
