शिवपुराण - रुद्रसंहिता, तृतीय (पार्वती) खण्ड

Shivpuran, which is one of the eighteen Puranas that narrate the glory and stories of Lord Shiva.

Rudrasamhita, which is the second section of the Shivpuran and contains six chapters.

The third chapter, which is called Parvati Khand, describes the birth and marriage of Parvati, the daughter of Himavan and Mena, and the consort of Shiva.

Narad, the divine sage, asks Brahma, the creator god, to continue the story of Mena’s previous birth and her marriage to Himavan. Brahma tells him that after their marriage, Himavan and Mena lived happily in their mountain home. One day, all the gods, including Vishnu, the preserver god, came to visit Himavan and praised him for his hospitality and devotion. They then revealed their purpose of coming, which was to request Himavan to become the father of Uma, who was formerly Sati, the first wife of Shiva. Sati had immolated herself in her father Daksha’s sacrificial fire after he insulted Shiva. The gods wanted Uma to be born again as Parvati and marry Shiva so that he would resume his role as the protector of the world. They also told Himavan how to please Uma and make her appear in his house. Himavan agreed to their request and felt blessed by their grace. The gods then went to Uma’s abode and worshipped her with hymns and prayers. The gods, including Vishnu, worshipped Uma, who is also known as Sati, Durga, Maheshwari, and other names. They praise her as the supreme goddess who is the source of all creation, sustenance, and destruction. They salute her as the embodiment of peace, power, knowledge, faith, wealth, beauty, and happiness. They acknowledge her as the mother of the Vedas, the goddess of speech, music, art, and science. They recognize her as the one who manifests in various forms in different beings and situations. They request her to be pleased with them and to appear again as Parvati in Himavan’s house. They hope that she will marry Shiva again and restore his interest in the world.

नारदजी बोले – महामते! आपने मेना के पूर्वजन्म की यह शुभ एवं अद्भुत कथा कही है। उनके विवाह का प्रसंग भी मैंने सुना लिया। अब आगे के उत्तम चरित्र का वर्णन कीजिये।
ब्रह्माजी ने कहा – नारद! जब मेना के साथ विवाह करके हिमवान् अपने घर को गये, तब तीनों लोकों में बड़ा भारी उत्सव मनाया गया। हिमालय भी अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हो मेना के साथ अपने सुखदायक सदन में निवास करने लगे। मुने! उस समय श्रीविष्णु आदि समस्त देवता और महात्मा मुनि गिरिराज के पास गये। उन सब देवताओं को आया देख महान् हिमगिरि ने प्रशंसापूर्वक उन्हें प्रणाम किया और अपने भाग्य की सराहना करते हुए भक्तिभाव से उन सबका आदर-सत्कार किया। हाथ जोड़ मस्तक झुकाकर वे बड़े प्रेम से स्तुति करने को उद्यत हुए। शैलराज के शरीर में महान् रोमांच हो आया। उनके नेत्रों से प्रेम के आँसू बहने लगे। मुने! हिमशैल ने प्रसन्न मन से अत्यन्त प्रेमपूर्वक प्रणाम किया और विनितभाव से खड़े हो श्रीविष्णु आदि देवताओं से कहा।

हिमाचल बोले – आज मेरा जन्म सफल हो गया, मेरी बड़ी भारी तपस्या सफल हुई। आज मेरा ज्ञान सफल हुआ और आज मेरी सारी क्रियाएँ सफल हो गयीं। आज मैं धन्य हुआ। मेरी सारी भूमि धन्य हुई। मेरा कुल धन्य हुआ। मेरी स्त्री तथा मेरा सब कुछ धन्य हो गया, इसमें संशय नहीं है; क्योंकि आप सब महान् देवता एक साथ मिलकर एक ही समय यहाँ पधारे हैं। मुझे अपना सेवक समझकर प्रसन्नतापूर्वक उचित कार्य के लिये आज्ञा दें।
हिमगिरि का यह वचन सुनकर वे सब देवता बड़े प्रसन्न हुए और अपने कार्य की सिद्धि मनाते हुए बोले।
