In this video, we’re going to talk about the side effects of purified bile salts. Bile salts have several benefits and can be very beneficial for people who’ve had their gallbladder removed. They also help with fat digestion, the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and constipation.

Although many people benefit from taking purified bile salts, the side effects may cause issues in some people. Here are some instances in which you may experience side effects from purified bile salts.

1. The stomach is too alkaline
If you take bile salts while your stomach acid is too alkaline, it can make your stomach even more alkaline, exacerbating the problem. An acidifier like betaine hydrochloride or apple cider vinegar can help make your stomach more acidic.

2. You have a hyperthyroid
If you have a hyperthyroid condition, you won’t want to take purified bile salts because they speed up the thyroid and increase the conversion of T4 to T3. Bile salts are better suited for someone with a hypothyroid condition, not a hyperthyroid.

3. Diarrhea
If you have chronic diarrhea, bile salts can worsen your symptoms. Bile salts lubricate the colon so they’re good for constipation, but not diarrhea.

4. Bile acid/bile salt malabsorption syndrome
Normally, you recycle 90% of your bile salts in the small intestine. If you have damage to your small intestine, the bile salts will move into the large intestine instead of being properly recycled, causing diarrhea.

If you take purified bile salts and end up with diarrhea, calcium carbonate can help.
