शहर में कितने कौवे ? | How many crows in the city? | अकबर बीरबल की कहानी

राजा अकबर कभी बीरबल का मजाक बनाते, तो कभी उनकी बुद्धिमत्ता देखने के लिए उनसे उल्टे-सीधे सवाल करते थे। लेकिन बीरबल हर बार ऐसा जवाब देते कि महाराज अकबर की बोलती बंद हो जाती। एक दिन महाराजा अकबर ने बीरबल से पूछा, बीरबल! क्या तुम बता सकते हो कि हमारी राजधानी में कुल कितने कौवे रहते हैं? बीरबल ने बिना एक पल सोचे पूरे आत्मविश्वास से कहा, जी महाराज, बता सकता हूं।

अकबर बोले, बिल्कुल सही गिनती बताना। दरबारियों को लगा कि आज बीरबल जरूर फंसेंगे। भला परिंदों की गिनती मुमकिन है क्या? अकबर ने कहा, हम तुम्हें दो दिन का समय देते हैं। तीसरे दिन तुम्हें हमारी राजधानी में कौवों की कुल संख्या बतानी होगी।
जब अकबर ने पूछा, बोलो राज्य में कुल कितने कौवे?
तीसरे दिन फिर दरबार लगा। बीरबल अपनी जगह से उठकर बोले, 'महाराज, हमारी राजधानी में 1,50,999 कौवे हैं। कोई शक हो तो गिनती करा लें।'

अकबर ने कहा, और अगर गिनती होने पर संख्या ज्यादा-कम निकली तो? बीरबल ने बड़े विश्वास से कहा, 'महाराज, ऐसा नहीं होगा। अगर गिनती गलत निकली तो इसका भी कोई कारण जरूर होगा।' यह सुनकर अकबर ने अचरज से पूछा कि क्या कारण हो सकता है?

बीरबल ने गंभीर होकर कहा, 'महाराज अगर राजधानी में कौवों की संख्या बढ़ती है तो इसका मतलब है कि हमारी राजधानी में कौवों के कुछ रिश्तेदार और दोस्त उनसे मिलने आए हुए हैं। संख्या घट जाए तो इसका मतलब हैं कि हमारे कुछ कौवे राजधानी से बाहर अपने रिश्तेदारों से मिलने गए हैं, वरना कौवों की संख्या तो 1,50,999 ही होगी।'

बीरबल से जलने वाले दरबारी अंदर ही अंदर कुढ़ कर रह गए कि हमेशा की तरह बीरबल अपनी समझदारी से बड़ी आसानी से एक बार फिर बच निकले। महाराज का भरोसा बीरबल में पहले से और ज्यादा बढ़ गया। इतना ही नहीं बीरबल को महाराज ने अशर्फियां भी भेंट कीं।
