He is also a psychiatrist, family therapist, Ayurvedic practitioner, homeopath, acupuncturist, Chinese herbalist, medical researcher, and a spiritual leader. Gabriel is an internationally celebrated spiritual teacher bridging cultures and ethnic groups. He is an ordained rabbi, who is also the Chief Essene Rabbi and founder of the Essene Order of Light.

Gabriel has authored thirteen books on nutrition, spirituality, and the Essenes. He has published research articles and speaks on a variety of medical and psychological topics. Gabriel brings a very strong medical, psychological, shamanic, biochemical, and scientific background to his work as a physician of the soul.

His book, There Is A Cure For Diabetes, is available in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, with more translations coming, as part of a worldwide program to heal diabetes naturally. He is now speaking at medical schools and to diabetic, vegan, live food, and medical audiences in the US and internationally on how to reverse diabetes naturally.

Gabriel’s other books include: Spiritual Nutrition - Six Foundations for Spiritual Life and the Awakening of Kundalini, Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine, Conscious Eating, Depression-Free for Life, Tachyon Energy, Spiritual Nutrition and the Rainbow Diet, Creating Peace by Being Peace - An Essene Sevenfold Path, There Is a Cure for Diabetes, Torah as a Guide to Enlightenment, and Conscious Parenting.

Dr. Cousens started the Tree of Life Center US and Foundation in 1993 in Patagonia, Arizona. It is one of the most unique spiritual centers in the world. Its mission is to help individuals and the planet transform and heal, physically, emotionally, psychologically, ecologically, and spiritually. Its core focus is to empower people to make the transition from the "Culture of Death" to the "Culture of Life and Liberation".

Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, M.D. has been an ordained Essene teacher since 1984 and founded the Essene Order of Light in 1993. As the founder and president of the Tree of Life Foundation, he and his wife Shanti, an Essene Priestess, train Essene priests and priestesses. (The Essenes are a meeting of the Jewish-Kabbalistic and the early Christian traditions, also known respectively as B’nei Israel and B’nei Noah.) The foundation helps to coordinate international humanitarian programs benefiting indigenous and disadvantaged families, children, and cultures through holistic education in the context of a spiritual ecological framework.

Gabriel has taught in forty nations throughout the world, including in the United States, Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Ecuador, North Africa, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Bali, and almost every country in Europe. He leads Tree of Life Gan Eden in Israel, where he and Shanti facilitate two spiritual fasts yearly, in addition to teaching many spiritual and vegan groups, as well as at the Redmond Naturopathic College. He is the founder and director of the Tree of Light Foundation in Israel, serving the Middle East and Europe, where his work includes spiritual teaching, live food nutrition, and creating a foundation for peace in the Middle East.

Since 2008 Dr. Cousens has developed fifteen diabetes prevention and organic veganic farming programs supported with micro-business loans in ten different countries. These regions include five West African countries (Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Liberia, and Ethiopia). He has established the West African Rural Empowerment Society with leaders from these countries. He has started similar programs in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and in regions throughout Mexico, where he started Alenzia de Cortisone (Alliance of the Heart) with four other humanitarian groups in the country. When more funding comes, the programs in Mexico and Africa are on the frontline for expansion. Part of the plan in these countries is to train local para-professionals to provide medical screening and medical advice to locals in these communities. These programs range from working with local officials up to government officials. He has also started projects in Bali, Papua New Guinea, and with the Native American population in the U.S. These programs, at this point, are the main focus of Dr. Cousens’ humanitarian work, in addition to specific projects in Israel, that are not specifically related to diabetes. Dennis Banks, who healed his diabetes at the Tree of Life Center US, and Larry (Kuuyux) Merculieff, the chief public Inuit shaman, who also healed his diabetes at the Tree of Life Center US, are very interested in leading the first two major diabetes Native American prevention programs in the U.S. These programs are significant because the unofficial estimate of Type 2 diabetes for Native Americans, according to Dennis Banks, is 90%.

Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, M.D., was initiated and ordained a rabbi by Orthodox Rabbi Gershon Winkler after twelve years of rabbinical study with Rabbi Winkler and a variety of other rabbis. His lineage goes directly back to the Bal Shem Tov, the founder of the Chassidic movement. The rest of Gabriel’s spiritual background since 1975 includes seven years under the tutelage of Swami Muktananda Paramahansa and eleven years with Swami Prakashananda Sarasvati in India. Both of these enlightened beings acknowledged Gabriel as liberated in 1982. Gabriel is considered a master of kundalini and meditation, a jnana yoga expert, and a teacher of bakti, mantra, and jnana yogas. He is also a four-year Native American Sun Dancer and has been adopted into the High Horse Clan of the Lakota Tribe; he is presently a Spirit Dance Chief and an inipi (sweat lodge) leader. He has lead prayer ceremonies for peace around the U.S., Canada, Australia, the Middle East, and at the UN for Peace 21 on each equinox and solstice.

Gabriel has a unique multi-ethnic background and experience as a rabbi well-trained in Jewish/Shamanic/Kabbalistic healing arts including leading Shamanic-Kabbalat-Shabbat ceremonies around the world. As a Lakota Sun Dancer, 44-year practitioner of yoga, meditation, and Ayurveda, as well as someone who has worked extensively with black communities in central Harlem; gangs on the south side of Chicago; and Latino communities in the southwest. He brings a rare and powerful multicultural understanding to his holistic healing and inter-faith discussions.

His interest in health, medicine, and spirituality goes back to his childhood, which manifested in high school when he built a heart-lung machine that won first prize in the state science fair. Gabriel graduated cum laude from Amherst College, where he published his first scientific paper in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta. He was the captain of an undefeated Amherst college football team, and was inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame. He graduated from Columbia Medical School in 1969, where he published his second paper in School Health based on his three-year experience living in Central Harlem. Here he developed a training program that was accepted in half the schools of Central Harlem and was eventually accepted by the N.Y. Department of Health. He completed his psychiatric residency in 1973. While in New York, Dr. Cousens also developed a sickle-cell screening program with the PS 175 Grammar School in Central Harlem. The results of this program were also followed through by the New York Department of Health. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Cousens was one of eight doctors nationally to receive an appointment at the National Institute of Mental Health in community psychiatry. He also received a commission as a Lieutenant Commander in the Public Health Service where he served for three years.

Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, M.D., has been involved in humanitarian work since 1963, when he began to work with African-American gangs in Chicago. During his medical internship, Dr. Cousens developed several community programs in San Francisco supporting socio-cultural peace. When he moved to Boston to complete his psychiatric residency and to attend the Boston Family Institute for two years, he developed a teen center for white working-class teenagers providing family therapy and teen counseling as well as social activities. During this time, he was also trained in systems therapy for helping social organizations.

After his residency in 1973, he moved to Petaluma, California where he became a consultant for the California State Department of Mental Health. He also became the chief mental health consultant for Sonoma County Head Start programs, which ranged over an area of almost 300 miles. During this time, he worked with white working-class parents and Pomo-Native American parents and teachers in developing a Head Start Program, which included teaching family dynamics to the Head Start teachers and developing an innovative lead-screening program long before it was ecologically fashionable.

Over a period of several years, Dr. Cousens established the Petaluma People’s Services Center, which was a community-controlled network that provides social services for all of Sonoma County. It involved organizing over 40 agencies, developing new programs and networking to serve the elderly, a child-abuse hotline, and parent crisis hotlines. As of 2009, this center is still operating 25 years later and has been successful in its endeavors. It has become a significant social service agency in southern Sonoma County. During this time, he also taught a two-year family therapy course given to masters and PhD students.

In 1973, Gabriel transitioned into a vegetarian lifestyle and began teaching meditation. He co-founded the world’s first Kundalini Crisis Clinic with Lee Sanella, M.D. in 1976. In 1983, he transitioned to a 100% vegan live-food lifestyle. Since 1985, Rabbi Cousens has been leading Peace 21 meditations around the world, including a quarterly peace meditation at the United Nations in New York City. His worldwide Peace Everyday Initiative (PEDI), started in 2003, encourages all spiritual traditions to work and pray for peace. PEDI has enrolled over 192 world organizations, and participants include spiritual leaders, rabbis, ministers, sheikhs, meditation teachers. PEDI has received the blessings of the Dalai Lama.

Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, M.D. is listed in the "Who’s Who in California", the "Who’s Who Among Top Executives", the "Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals", the "International Who’s Who of Entrepreneurs", "Strathmore’s Who’s Who", and is a former member of the Board of Trustees of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA), and is presently vice-president of the Arizona Homeopathic and Integrative Medical Association (AHIMA).

Gabriel is married to Shanti Golds Cousens. He has two children and three granddaughters. As a spiritual evolutionary visionary, he has committed his life to the world service of elevating planetary consciousness and of establishing these healing and transformational programs on an international basis so that he, and everyone who chooses to help, can participate in the healing and transformation of the individual and the planet.
