In the early 1900s, Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard opened a sanatorium in Washington named Wilderness Heights. But Linda wasn’t a real doctor. She’d only written a book on fasting. Her so called “fasting cure” resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen patients. Worse still, when they were at their weakest, she convinced them to leave everything they had to her. It wasn’t until a wealthy patient secretly reached out for help that she was caught.

She was convicted in 1912 of manslaughter served two years before being released on parole. She was granted a full pardon the next year. She went on to move to New Zealand where she opened two other “schools of health” that were eventually closed.

We’ll never know for sure if her motives were to con and kill her patients or not, but she must have believed in the cure. Because years later, she attempted to cure herself by fasting and ultimately died of starvation.
