It is weird to think how this channel has grown in the last 12-months. A year ago this weekend we just hit 100 subscribers. Now, we're at nearly 4,000 strong, over 250 uploads and attending our first game convention. And not only would we be attending our first convention but we'd be doing so being invited by the amazing John Riggs! Oh, I'd also get to co-host a panel with John too!
As the panel approached I was more than a little nervous. I like to prepare for things like this and was going into ti completely cold. I knew John knew his stuff, but this being my first Con, I didn't want to make him look bad. Thankfully I think I held my own.
Before the panel, I headed upstairs to the room to get set up. I had soldering equipment, security bits, Ott Lights, tool stands, pliers, tweezers and just every piece of soldering equipment I normally use. Additionally, one of the locals had brought a desoldering iron so John would be covered there as well.
As we got started my mindset was I would tackle the basics and not overstep. John, after all, is the expert when it comes to board swaps, desoldering, and resurrecting games that aren't working. My goal was to handle things like opening the carts for him, basic soldering, kinda staying out of his way and adding where I could. I think my experiences in radio helped too, I'm very familiar with knowing when to chime in to add-to what the host said.
John had brought several games to try to bring back to life. He had copies of Commando, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario/Duck Hunt and one or two others to try. One person in attendance even had a Batman: Revenge of the Joker cart that "wasn't doing game stuff". He also had a selection of Masamura boards and donor boards to transfer ROMs and SOMs to if needed.
In 45-minutes you're under a big time crunch. We tried the basics from cleaning carts to try to get them to work to even trying a board swap. Unfortunately, even with John desoldering and my soldering a ROM onto a different board we just couldn't get anything up and running. Well, one SMB/Duck Hunt did work as soon as John plugged it in but neither of us really counted that.
While there were not any resurrections we did answer a ton of questions about soldering and repairing cartridges and consoles. We discussed the proper types of solder to use, 60/40 rosin core solder, the types of irons to use, the types of other tools we use and more. It was fun and enlightening for me to do, and Jon being so gracious to me really helped me feel at ease.
I have to thank so many people for a great weekend. We made many new friends and we will definitely be back in 2019!
Thankfully, we had a blast together. I wasn't surprised to learn that, in our first meeting, John was exactly the same fun, smart, friendly and engaging guy in-person that I had corresponded with this past year. I was a fan of his before, as a person, and left an even bigger one afterward.
