Mega Homestead Gardening Day

Melanie and I spent the day planting seeds and seedlings on our homestead today. We have to grow seedlings to a certain height before we can plant them into the garden or the ground squirrels will eat them.

This is our third attempt at putting in a garden this year. The first time everything froze the day we planted our garden. The next time we grew 300 seedlings inside our home and then put them outside to get some sun. A squirrel wiped them all out in an hour.

Now we are sprouting seeds indoors and then planting the sprouts in starter trays. There we will grow them up big enough that the squirrels will not bother them.

Then we plant the larger vegetable plants into the garden. So far this is working well for us.

We just put in 26 pumpkin, squash and cucumber plants. I dug out holes and put in the composted soil mix before planting each vine.

Then Melanie came along behind me and watered the plants.

We have literally hundreds of small plants growing outside on a set of shelves. We have to take them out and water them twice daily until they are large enough to go into our garden.
