The moral of the tale is that parents should not spoil their children with an excessive amount of attention and that doing so might lead to disastrous results. The narrative focuses on the friendship that developed between Duryodhana and Karna during the course of the events. It also describes how a nefarious and cunning individual, like Shakuni, may poison not just adults, like Dhritarashtra, but even younger people, like the children (Duryodhana and Dushasana and all Kauravas).

It tells of the ills of gambling, the protective nature of a sibling relationship, the woes of the mother, the pain of children in broken families (as of Karna), the disastrous consequences of excessive sexuality, and it tells of inferiority complexes, devotion, truthfulness and honesty, valor, and pride.

It also tells of how events and situations can humble the mightiest of people. It talks of addressing the cunning with equal cleverness, of peace, of battle, and tactics, of human patience and how it wears out leading to breaching of rules (just like in the war.... as it becomes longer, more and more rules get violated, and baser and baser means get utilized).

It enlightens us about God, the cosmos, science, philosophy, social relationships, ethical standards, and norms of behavior applicable to a variety of circumstances. It discusses the need for tenacity and focus in the process of skill acquisition, as well as the challenges faced by women. The Mahabharata contains stories about politics, instructors, regular men and how they behave, bravery, cowardice, envy, charity, about deception, about murder, the truth, and how God works through mankind.
