House Judiciary Committee Hearing on Policing Practices
The House Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the oversight of policing practices. Witnesses included Gwen Carr, the mother of Eric Garner, who died after a New York police officer placed him in a choke hold; the Reverend Al Sharpton; former professional tennis player James Blake; and representatives from law enforcement, think tanks, and police reform advocacy groups. A few of the topics discussed included improving police and community relations, increasing accountability among law enforcement, and looking at ways to improve policing practices in the future to strengthen the public trust.
