Ritchie Valens
00:00 - Ritchie Valens
00:02 - 1 - Ritchie Valens:
Ritchie Valens was a Mexican American singer and songwriter influential in the Chicano rock movement. He recorded numerous hits during his short career, most notably the 1958 hit "La Bamba." Valens died at age 17 in a plane crash with fellow musicians Buddy Holly and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson on February 3, 1959. The tragedy was later immortalized as "the day the music died" in the song "American Pie."
00:33 - 2 - Early Life:
Born Richard Steven Valenzuela on May 13, 1941, in Pacoima, California, Valens made history as rock music's first Latino star. Growing in Pacoima, Valens developed a love of music early on and learned to play a number of different instruments. However, the guitar soon became his passion. He found inspiration from various sources, ranging from traditional Mexican music to popular R&B acts to innovative rock performers like Little Richard.
At 16 years old, Valens joined his first band, the Silhouettes. The group played local gigs, and Valens was spotted at one of these performances by Bob Keane, the head of the Del-Fi record label. With Keane's help, the young performer was posied for a career breakthrough.
01:23 - 3 - Career Highlights, "La Bamba" and "Donna":
Valens auditioned for Keane's record label in May 1958, and before long, he had his first single out on Del-Fi. The song, "Come On, Let's Go," became a minor hit. Keane also encouraged the young singer to shorten his last name to "Valens" to make it more radio friendly. Valens had even greater success with his second single, which featured "La Bamba" and "Donna." "Donna," an ode to his high school girlfriend Donna Ludwig, became a popular ballad, eventually climbing as high as the number two spot on the pop charts. While not as big a hit, "La Bamba" was a revolutionary song that fused elements of a traditional Mexican folk tune with rock and roll. Valens was not a native Spanish speaker and had to be coached on the all-Spanish-language song.
Riding the success of his latest single, Valens entertained a national audience on American Bandstand in December 1958. He also appeared on Alan Freed's Christmas Show around the same time. In January 1959, Valens went on the road with the Winter Dance Party tour. The tour featured such acts as Holly, Dion and the Belmonts and Richardson. Over three weeks, these performers were set to play 24 concerts across the Midwest.
02:44 - 4 - The Day The Music Died:
On February 2, 1959, the Winter Dance Party tour played the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. The tour was set to perform the next day in Moorhead, Minnesota. Holly had chartered a plane to get there after experiencing trouble with his tour bus. According to some reports, Valens won a seat on the plane in a coin toss with Holly's guitarist Tommy Allsup. Richardson also traded places with another original passenger, Waylon Jennings.
During a light snowstorm, the plane took off but it only traveled about five miles before crashing into a cornfield. All four passengers—Richardson, Holly, Valens and the pilot—were killed. As the news of the accident spread, many were shocked by the loss of these three talents. The tragedy was later memorialized in the Don McLean song "American Pie" as "The day the music died."
03:40 - 5 - Legacy:
Only 17 years old when he died, Valens left behind a few recordings. His first, self-titled album was released shortly after the accident and did well on the charts. A live recording was later released as Ritchie Valens in Concert at Pacoima Junior High. His life story was memorialized on the big screen in the 1987 movie La Bamba, which introduced a new generation of music fans to the pioneering Latino performer. Lou Diamond Phillips played Valens, and the band Los Lobos recorded the soundtrack.

Great white sharks are being scared off by predators
00:00 - Great white sharks are being scared off by predators
00:05 - 1 - Great Sharks:
There is no sea creature whose name inspires terror – rightly or wrongly – as much as the great white shark.
With its sleek body optimized for hunting, its sharp teeth, and its (somewhat undeserved) reputation for enjoying human flesh, the great white (Carcharodon carcharias) is widely regarded as one of the ocean's top predators. And that's true, it is – but there's something even the great white fears.
00:33 - 2 - Guilty:
Since 2017, scientists have documented that the sharks have made themselves extremely scarce off the coast of South Africa, where they usually congregate. Initially, the strange disappearance was blamed on human activity, such as overfishing.
Now, new research has confirmed in detail the true culprit: a pair of orcas (Orcinus orca), hunting the sharks and slurping out their delicious, nutritious, vitamin-rich livers.
Once upon a time, the fishing town of Gansbaai on the South African coast was something of a mecca for shark-spotters – so heavily populated with the predators that nearby Dyer Island is considered the great white shark capital of the world. Over the last few years, however, the sharks' presence has been diminishing.
In addition, since 2017, eight great white sharks have washed ashore at Gansbaai, seven of them sans livers (and some without their hearts) – the hallmark of an orca attack. The wounds on these sharks are distinctive, and have been traced to the same pair of orcas. It's likely, scientists believe, that the pair are responsible for many more great white deaths that haven't washed ashore.
01:45 - 3 - The evidence:
We know from other studies that the presence of orcas can drive great white sharks away pretty adroitly. One in 2020 found that great whites will scarper away, without fail, from preferred hunting waters off the coast of San Francisco if an orca makes an appearance in the region.
In a new study, using long-term sighting and tracking data from tagged sharks, a team of scientists led by marine biologist Alison Towner of the Dyer Island Conservation Trust has shown that orcas are the reason sharks are starting to avoid what used to be some of their favorite spots.
"Initially, following an orca attack in Gansbaai, individual great white sharks did not appear for weeks or months," Towner explained.
"What we seem to be witnessing though is a large-scale avoidance (rather than a fine-scale) strategy, mirroring what we see used by wild dogs in the Serengeti in Tanzania, in response to increased lion presence. The more the orcas frequent these sites, the longer the great white sharks stay away."
Over the course of five years, the team tracked 14 sharks that had been GPS tagged as they fled the area when orcas were present. Sightings of great white sharks are also down, quite significantly, in several bays.
03:00- 4 - The impacts:
This is a huge deal. Only twice before have great white sharks been noted as absent for a week or more in Gansbaai since record-keeping began: a period of one week in 2007, and a period of three weeks in 2017. The new absences, the researchers said, are unprecedented. Moreover, they're altering the ecosystem.
In the absence of great white sharks, copper sharks (Carcharhinus brachyurus) are moving in to fill the vacant ecological niche. These sharks are preyed upon by great whites; with no great whites around, the orcas are hunting the coppers instead. And, notably, they're doing so with the skill of predators who have had experience in hunting large sharks, the researchers said.
"However, balance is crucial in marine ecosystems, for example, with no great white sharks restricting Cape fur seal behavior, the seals can predate on critically endangered African penguins, or compete for the small pelagic fish they eat. That's a top-down impact, we also have 'bottom up' trophic pressures from extensive removal of abalone, which graze the kelp forests these species are all connected through," Towner said.
"To put it simply, although this is a hypothesis for now, there is only so much pressure an ecosystem can take, and the impacts of orcas removing sharks, are likely far wider-reaching."
It's also worth considering the reasons why orcas might be hunting sharks. Their livers are rich sources of nutrition, huge, plump, and full of fats and oil that the sharks use to fuel their epic migratory journeys across the ocean. But it's unclear how the orcas figured this out, or why they might seek the shark livers as a preferred source of nutrition.
It's possible, scientists speculate in a paper that hasn't been published yet, that some orcas are adapting to preferentially hunt sharks, perhaps in response to declining numbers of their preferred prey. However, given that great white populations are declining worldwide, the added pressure of an efficient predator is a cause for concern.
"The orcas are targeting subadult great white sharks, which can further impact an already vulnerable shark population owing to their slow growth and late-maturing life-history strategy," Towner said.
"Increased vigilance using citizen science (e.g. fishers' reports, tourism vessels), as well as continued tracking studies, will aid in collecting more information on how these predations may impact the long-term ecological balance in these complex coastal seascapes."

Couple buys truck and turns it into their dream home
00:00 - Couple buys truck and turns it into their dream home
00:07 - 1 - The Choice:
Anyone who has bought a house (or even just looked into it) knows that it is hardly easy.
Nowadays, real estate prices are getting higher and more out of reach for the average family. One UK couple was looking for a unique solution for their dream home must-haves and found an extremely creative and industrious way to pull it off.
Iona Stewart and Martin Hill love to travel. According to Bored Panda, the couple wanted a home that would travel with them, like a "big American RV." What seemed like a silly idea shared over drinks was actually the birth of their dream home.
Iona and Martin found a truck previously used for bread delivery for sale on eBay. It cost just £3,600 (a little over $4,600). The couple decided to buy the truck and convert it themselves.
It wouldn't be an easy task. Martin did much of the physical labor, while Iona focused on the interior design. They worked full-time on this labor of love, putting in four months of work to get to their finished product. Now they're living their best lives traveling in their dream home.
01:18 - 2 - Purchase:
This is the truck Iona and Martin purchased off eBay to transform. The truck cost them approximately $4,600.
It gave the couple a complete blank slate to make all their own.
01:32 - 3 - The transformation:
The work needed to make the truck inhabitable for the couple's adventures on the road put them back about $25,000.
It might seem a steep price to pay for renovations. But when you consider that the cost of an actual house in their Nottingham neighborhood typically runs upward of $250,000, the couple managed to pull this off for quite a bargain.
The couple made the most of their materials, reusing extra pieces to outfit the truck with storage.
This small burner provides ample heating for the space.
They added personal touches wherever possible with artwork and trinkets.
The pair sought out the perfect pieces that would allow them to include all the essentials without taking up too much space.
Doors are used to partition off the space, making it feel bigger than it is.
The living space boasts a minimalist look.
The bedroom looks like any other ordinary bedroom but features hidden storage to help the couple store their things without making the space look cluttered.
Every piece in the living space is necessary for comfort, utility, or storage — and, sometimes, all three at once! The couple put careful thought into each and every item in the truck.
For that reason, they were able to fit everything they need, including a full kitchen with ample storage.
02:52 - 4 - Departure for your adventures:
The outside of the truck even got a makeover. With the last piece finally ready, the couple has taken off with their bread truck dream home to have plenty of adventures around Europe.
Iona and Martin recently moved into the truck full-time. They plan to travel around Europe and snowboard while living the minimalist lifestyle and saving money for whatever their next adventure might be.

Dog swims two days after falling off boat
00:00 -Dog swims two days after falling off boat
00:07 - 1 - There is no sea left:
The efforts dogs will make to be reunited with their owners are legendary, but one pup may have raised the bar significantly: by swimming for two days, on their own, in order to ensure a reunion.
Jolie the dog fell overboard during a storm while her owners were sailing to Ibiza, Spain. She was found days later on the shore of Cope in Aguilas, near the city of Murcia, say local police.
00:35 - 2 - how much nado:
The dog swam over 120 miles and police estimate that she would have been swimming for one or two days to reach safety. After beachgoers found Jolie, she was taken to police who managed to reunite her with her owners thanks to her microchip.
After being taken to Aguilas Local Police, they were able to use Jolie's microchip and discover that it was fitted in Denmark, as reported by Telecinco. A local rescue center alerted police to a correlating call they had received from a woman explaining that her American friend's daughter had lost her pet during a mid-sail storm.
A spokesman for Aguilas Local Police told media sources: "Last Friday night a family that had been on the beach handed over a dog to us which they had found on Cope Beach in Aguilas. We discovered it was wearing a microchip from Denmark.
01:25 - 3 - Suitable place:
"The animal was taken to a shelter and work began to find its owner."
Exact details on where the dog fell overboard are unknown, but Ibiza is over 160 nautical miles from Aguilas, where Josie was finally found.
"That daughter was sailing in the Med with her husband and dog Jolie and were heading for Ibiza and were caught up in a storm that led to Jolie falling into the sea. They tried to find it and rescue it but to no avail."
After confirming that the found dog was in fact their missing Jolie, her owners reached Aguilas in a matter of hours.
Police captured the heartwarming reunion in a video posted to social media. Both Jolie and her owners are just as happy as one another, with Jolie wagging her tail in excitement and the owners repeatedly heard saying: "We have you back." Jolie even lays back for chest rubs among the sheer joy from all parties involved.

Louis Armstrong
00:00 - Louis Armstrong
00:04 - 1 - Who Was Louis Armstrong?
Louis Armstrong, nicknamed "Satchmo," "Pops" and, later, "Ambassador Satch," was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana. An all-star virtuoso, he came to prominence in the 1920s, influencing countless musicians with both his daring trumpet style and unique vocals.
Armstrong's charismatic stage presence impressed not only the jazz world but all of popular music. He recorded several songs throughout his career, including he is known for songs like "Star Dust," "La Vie En Rose" and "What a Wonderful World."
Early Life
Louis Armstrong was born on August 4, 1901, in New Orleans, Louisiana, in a neighborhood so poor that it was nicknamed "The Battlefield."
Armstrong had a difficult childhood: His father was a factory worker and abandoned the family soon after Louis's birth. His mother, who often turned to prostitution, frequently left him with his maternal grandmother. Armstrong was obligated to leave school in the fifth grade to begin working.
A local Jewish family, the Karnofskys, gave young Armstrong a job collecting junk and delivering coal. They also encouraged him to sing and often invited him into their home for meals.
On New Year's Eve in 1912, Armstrong fired his stepfather's gun in the air during a New Year's Eve celebration and was arrested on the spot. He was then sent to the Colored Waif's Home for Boys.
There, he received musical instruction on the cornet and fell in love with music. In 1914, the home released him, and he immediately began dreaming of a life making music.
01:46 -2 - King Oliver:
While he still had to work odd jobs selling newspapers and hauling coal to the city's famed red-light district, Armstrong began earning a reputation as a fine blues player.
One of the greatest cornet players in town, Joe "King" Oliver, began acting as a mentor to the young Armstrong, showing him pointers on the horn and occasionally using him as a sub.
02:07 - 3 - First Spouse:
By the end of his teens, Armstrong had grown up fast. In 1918, he married Daisy Parker, a prostitute, commencing a stormy union marked by many arguments and acts of violence.
During this time, Armstrong adopted a three-year-old boy named Clarence. The boy's mother, Armstrong's cousin, had died in childbirth. Clarence, who had become mentally disabled from a head injury he had suffered at an early age, was taken care of by Armstrong his entire life.
Fate Marable
Meanwhile, Armstrong's reputation as a musician continued to grow: In 1918, he replaced Oliver in Kid Ory's band, then the most popular band in New Orleans.
He was soon able to stop working manual labor jobs and began concentrating full-time on his cornet, playing parties, dances, funeral marches and at local "honky-tonks"—a name for small bars that typically host musical acts.
Beginning in 1919, Armstrong spent his summers playing on riverboats with a band led by Fate Marable. It was on the riverboat that Armstrong honed his music reading skills and eventually had his first encounters with other jazz legends, including Bix Beiderbecke and Jack Teagarden.
03:24 - 4 - Big Band Jazz:
Though Armstrong was content to remain in New Orleans, in the summer of 1922, he received a call from Oliver to come to Chicago and join his Creole Jazz Band on second cornet.
Armstrong accepted, and he was soon taking Chicago by storm with both his remarkably fiery playing and the dazzling two-cornet breaks that he shared with Oliver. He made his first recordings with Oliver on April 5, 1923; that day, he earned his first recorded solo on "Chimes Blues."
Armstrong soon began dating the female pianist in the band, Lillian Hardin. After they married in 1924, Hardin made it clear that she felt Oliver was holding Armstrong back. She pushed her husband to cut ties with his mentor and join Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra, the top African American dance band in New York City at the time.
Armstrong joined Henderson in the fall of 1924 and immediately made his presence felt with a series of solos that introduced the concept of swing music to the band. Armstrong had a great influence on Henderson and his arranger, Don Redman, both of whom began integrating Armstrong's swinging vocabulary into their arrangements—transforming Henderson's band into what is generally regarded as the first jazz big band.
However, Armstrong's southern background didn't mesh well with the more urban, Northern mentality of Henderson's other musicians, who sometimes gave Armstrong a hard time over his wardrobe and the way he talked. Henderson also forbade Armstrong from singing, fearing that his rough way of vocalizing would be too coarse for the sophisticated audiences at the Roseland Ballroom.
Unhappy, Armstrong left Henderson in 1925 to return to Chicago, where he began playing with his wife's band at the Dreamland Café.
05:12 - 5 - Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five:
While in New York, Armstrong cut dozens of records as a sideman, creating inspirational jazz with other greats such as Sidney Bechet, and backing numerous blues singers including Bessie Smith.
Back in Chicago, OKeh Records decided to let Armstrong make his first records with a band under his own name: Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five. From 1925 to 1928, Armstrong made more than 60 records with the Hot Five and, later, the Hot Seven.
Today, these are generally regarded as the most important and influential recordings in jazz history; on these records, Armstrong's virtuoso brilliance helped transform jazz from an ensemble music to a soloist's art. His stop-time solos on numbers like "Cornet Chop Suey" and "Potato Head Blues" changed jazz history, featuring daring rhythmic choices, swinging phrasing and incredible high notes.
He also began singing on these recordings, popularizing wordless "scat singing" with his hugely popular vocal on 1926's "Heebie Jeebies."
The Hot Five and Hot Seven were strictly recording groups; Armstrong performed nightly during this period with Erskine Tate's orchestra at the Vendome Theater, often playing music for silent movies. While performing with Tate in 1926, Armstrong finally switched from the cornet to the trumpet.

Never-before-seen microbes locked in glacier ice could spark a wave of new pandemics if released
00:00 - Never-before-seen microbes locked in glacier ice could spark a wave of new pandemics if released
00:08 - 1 - Discovery:
Stunned scientists have uncovered more than 900 never-before-seen species of microbes living inside glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau. Analysis of the microbes' genomes revealed that some have the potential to spawn new pandemics, if rapid melting caused by climate change releases them from their icy prisons.
In a new study, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences took ice samples from 21 glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau — a high-altitude region in Asia wedged between the Himalayan mountain range to the south and the Taklamakan Desert to the north. The team then sequenced the DNA of the microscopic organisms locked inside the ice, creating a massive database of microbe genomes that they named the Tibetan Glacier Genome and Gene (TG2G) catalog. It is the first time that a microbial community hidden within a glacier has been genetically sequenced.
The team found 968 microbial species frozen within the ice — mostly bacteria but also algae, archaea and fungi, the researchers reported June 27 in the journal Nature Biotechnology(opens in new tab). But perhaps more surprisingly, around 98% of those species were completely new to science. This level of microbial diversity was unexpected because of the challenges associated with living inside glaciers, the researchers said. "Despite extreme environmental conditions, such as low temperatures, high levels of solar radiation, periodic freeze-thaw cycles and nutrient limitation, the surfaces of glaciers support a diverse array of life," the study authors wrote.
The researchers aren't sure exactly how old some of these microbes are; prior studies have shown that it is possible to revive microbes that have been trapped in ice for up to 10,000 years, according to the study.
02:04 - 2 - Surprising abundance of microbes:
This is not the first time that scientists have found a surprising abundance of microbes living in Tibetan glaciers. In January 2020, a team that analyzed ice cores from a single glacier uncovered 33 different groups of viruses living within the ice, 28 of which had never been seen before.
The surprising microbial diversity within glaciers, coupled with an increase in melting glacial ice due to climate change, boosts the chances that potentially dangerous microbes — most likely bacteria — will escape and wreak havoc, researchers said. "Ice-entrapped pathogenic microbes could lead to local epidemics and even pandemics" if they are released into the environment, the authors wrote.
Evidence suggests that some of the newfound bacteria could be very dangerous to humans and other organisms. The team identified 27,000 potential virulence factors — molecules that help bacteria invade and colonize potential hosts — within the TG2G catalog. The researchers warned that around 47% of these virulence factors have never been seen before, and so there is no way of knowing how harmful the bacteria could be.
Even if these potentially pathogenic bacteria do not survive for long after escaping their glaciers, they can still cause problems, the researchers said. Bacteria have the unique ability to exchange large sections of their DNA, known as mobile genetic elements (MGEs), with other bacteria. So even if the glacial bacteria die shortly after being thawed out, they can still pass on some of their virulence to other bacteria they encounter. This genetic interaction between glacier microbes and modern microorganisms "could be particularly dangerous," the scientists wrote.
The Tibetan Plateau glaciers could be a hot spot for unleashing future pandemics because they feed fresh water into a number of waterways, including the Yangtze River, the Yellow River and the Ganges River, which supply two of the most populated countries in the world: China and India. Pandemics spread quickly through highly populated areas, as the world witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
But this potential problem won't just affect Asia. There are more than 20,000 glaciers on Earth covering around 10% of the planet's land mass, and each glacier is likely to have its own unique microbial communities. In April 2021, a study using satellite images of glaciers found that nearly every glacier on Earth showed an accelerated rate of ice loss between 2000 and 2019, which increases the risk that pandemic-spawning microbes could escape anywhere on the planet. The researchers warned that the "potential health risks [of these microbes] need to be evaluated" before they are released from their icy prisons.
05:02 - 3 - Positive side:
However, there is a silver lining to this new study. Genetic records of microbial communities, such as the TG2G catalog, could be used as "toolkits" for bioprospecting — exploring natural systems to find valuable new compounds that can be used in medicine, cosmetics and other beneficial technologies. That makes databases like TG2G very important, especially if the newly discovered species go extinct in the future; an outcome that is all too likely if they cannot adapt to the changes in their frozen habitat, the researchers wrote.

The Platters
00:00 - The Platters
00:07 - 1 - The Platters Biography:
With classics such as "The Great Pretender," "Only You," and their rendition of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," the Platters were one of the preeminent doo wop groups of the rock & roll era. Under the guidance of manager and producer Buck Ram, the Platters churned out hit after hit during the 1950s, bridging the gap between more traditional vocal-group stylings and the popular R&B grooves of the early '50s. Their sound was unique, marked by lead singer Tony Williams' powerful vocals and the feminine touch of singer Zola Taylor. Although competing versions of the Platters confused the public for many years, original founding member Herb Reed eventually solidified his rights to the name and the group continued recording and performing into the 2010s.
00:53 - 2 - Beginning:
The Platters started out in 1952 as a Los Angeles-based doo wop group who made a few records for Federal, a subsidiary of Cincinnati's King Records. What changed their fortunes boils down to one very important name: their mentor, manager, producer, songwriter, and vocal coach Buck Ram. Ram took a standard doo wop vocal group and turned them into stars, and one of the most enduring and lucrative groups of all time. By 1954, Ram was already running a talent agency in Los Angeles, writing and arranging for publisher Mills Music, managing the Three Suns -- a pop group who had some success -- and working with his protégés the Penguins. The Platters seemed like a good addition to his stable.
After getting them out of their Federal contract, Ram placed them with the burgeoning national independent label Mercury Records (at the same time he brought over the Penguins following their success with "Earth Angel"), automatically getting them into pop markets through the label's distribution contacts alone. Then Ram started homing in on the group's strengths and weaknesses. The first thing he did was put the lead vocal status squarely on the shoulders of lead tenor Tony Williams. Williams' emoting power was turned up full blast with the group (now augmented with Zola Taylor from Shirley Gunter & the Queens) working as very well-structured vocal support framing his every note. With Ram's pop songwriting classics as their musical palette, the group quickly became a pop and R&B success, eventually earning the distinction of being the first Black act of the era to top the pop charts. Considered the most romantic of all the doo wop groups (that is, the ultimate in "make-out music"), hit after hit came tumbling forth in a seemingly effortless manner: "Only You," "The Great Pretender," "My Prayer," "Twilight Time," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Harbor Lights," all of them establishing the Platters as the classiest of all.
02:49 - 3 - End of the group:
In 1961, Williams struck out on his own. By the decade's end, the group had disbanded, with various members starting up their own version of the Platters. Decades of competing versions ensued, until original member Herb Reed finally won a series of court cases. Reed, who died in 2012, restarted the group and patterned them on the original, with members including Wayne Miller, Valerie Victoria, Frank Pizarro, and Cheo Bourne, plus music director Michael Larson. In 2015, the only group authorized to perform as the Platters released Back to Basics Live! on the You Dig It label. The album included a pair of Grammy Hall of Fame songs "Only You (And You Alone)" and "The Great Pretender." Also included was a bonus track, the new Platters' recording of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" (lead singer Pizarro was a first responder at the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001). Sonny Turner, who replaced Tony Williams in the Platters' lineup, died on January 13, 2022 at the age of 82.

Major breakthrough puts clean nuclear fusion power at your fingertips
00:00 - Major breakthrough puts clean nuclear fusion power at your fingertips
00:06 - 1 - Power generation:
By creating light and heat through nuclear fusion, the Sun has fueled life on Earth for billions of years. Given that incredible power and longevity, it seems there can hardly be a better way to generate energy than by harnessing the same nuclear processes that occur in stars, including our own sun.
Nuclear fusion reactors aim to reproduce this process by fusing hydrogen atoms to create helium, which releases energy in the form of heat. Sustaining this at a large scale has the potential to produce a safe, clean, almost inexhaustible power supply.
The quest began decades ago, but could a long-running joke that nuclear fusion is always 30 years away soon start to look dated?
Some hope so, following a major breakthrough during a nuclear-fusion experiment in late 2021. This came at the Joint European Torus (JET) research facility in Oxfordshire, UK, in a giant, doughnut-shaped machine called a tokamak.
Inside, superheated gases called plasmas are generated in which the fusion reactions take place, containing charged particles that are held in place by powerful magnetic fields. Such plasmas can reach temperatures of 150 million degrees Celsius, an unfathomable 10 times hotter than the Sun’s core.
In a sustained five-second burst, researchers in the EUROfusion consortium released a record-breaking 59 megajoules (MJ) of fusion energy. This was almost triple the previous 21.7 MJ record set at the same facility in 1997, with the results touted as “the clearest demonstration in a quarter of a century of the potential for fusion energy to deliver safe and sustainable low-carbon energy.” Follow the link to learn more about the successful nuclear fusion experiment at JET.
The results provided a major boost ahead of the next phase of nuclear fusion’s development. A larger and more advanced version of JET known as ITER (meaning “The Way” in Latin) is under construction on a 180-hectare site in Saint-Paul-lès-Durance, southern France.
ITER, which is being built as a collaboration between 35 nations, including those in the EU, is aimed at further firming up the concept of fusion. One of the most complicated machines ever to be created, it was scheduled to start generating its first plasma in 2025 before entering into high-power operation around 2035 – although researchers on the project expect some delays because of the pandemic.
02:40 - 2 - Major milestone:
The results at JET represent a major landmark, said Professor Tony Donné, program manager of the EUROfusion project, a major consortium of 4,800 experts, students, and facilities across Europe. “It’s a huge milestone – the biggest for a long time,” he said.
“It’s confirmed all the modeling, so it has really increased confidence that ITER will work and do what it’s meant to do.” While the energy generated at JET lasted just a few seconds, the aim is to ramp this up to a sustained reaction that produces energy.
Previously, the wall was made of carbon, but this proved too reactive with the fuel mix of deuterium and tritium, two heavier isotopes – or variants – of hydrogen used in the fusion reaction. This resulted in the formation of hydrocarbons, locking up the tritium fuel in the wall.
In the rebuild, which involved 16 000 components and 4 000 tonnes of metal, the carbon was replaced with beryllium and tungsten to reduce tritium retention. Ultimately, the team was able to cut the amount of trapped fuel by a large multiple, contributing to the success of the recent fusion shot.
In preparation for the next stage of fusion’s epic journey, upgrades to JET ensured that its configuration aligns with the plans for ITER. Further in the future, the next step beyond ITER will be a demonstration power plant known as DEMO, designed to send electricity into the grid – leading on to fusion plants becoming a commercial and industrial reality.
“ITER is a device which will create 10 times more fusion energy than the energy used to heat the plasma,” said Prof Donné. “But as it is an experimental facility, it will not deliver electricity to the grid. For that, we need another device, which we call DEMO. This will really bring us to the foundations for the first generation of fusion power plants.”
Prof Donné added: “JET has shown now that fusion is plausible. ITER has to show that it’s further feasible, and DEMO will need to demonstrate that it really works.”
Planned to provide up to 500 megawatts (MW) to the grid, he thinks it is realistic for DEMO to come into operation around 2050. “We hope to build DEMO much faster than we built ITER, making (use of the) lessons learned,” he said.
Yet there are other key challenges to overcome on the way to getting nuclear fusion up and running. Not least is that while deuterium is abundant in seawater, tritium is extremely scarce and difficult to produce.
The researchers, therefore, plan to develop a way of generating it inside the tokamak, using a “breeding blanket” containing lithium. The idea is that high-energy neutrons from the fusion reactions will interact with the lithium to create tritium.
05:28 - 3 - Essential energy:
Prof Donné said nuclear fusion could prove a pivotal green and sustainable energy source for the future. “I would say it’s essential,” he said. “I’m not convinced that by 2050 we can make the carbon dioxide transition with only renewables, and we need other things.”
And although he says the current method of creating nuclear energy through fission is becoming safer and safer, fusion has key advantages. Proponents for ITER talk of benefits such as an absence of meltdown risk, adding that nuclear fusion does not produce long-lived radioactive waste and that reactor materials can be recycled or reused within 100 to 300 years.
“It’s definitely much safer,” said Prof Donné. Referencing the stigma carried by nuclear energy, he said, “What we see when we interact with the public is that people very often haven’t heard about nuclear fusion. But when we explain the pros and cons, then I think people get positive.”
Referring to Lev Artsimovich, dubbed the “father of the tokamak,” he said, “Artsimovich always said fusion will be there when society really needs it. If we get fusion up and running, then really we have a very safe and clean energy source which can give us energy for thousands of years.”

Link Wray
00:00 - Link Wray
00:03 - 1 - Start:
Link Wray may never get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but his contribution to the language of rockin' guitar would still be a major one, even if he had never walked into another studio after cutting "Rumble." Quite simply, Link Wray invented the power chord, the major modus operandi of modern rock guitarists. Listen to any of the tracks he recorded between that landmark instrumental in 1958 through his Swan recordings in the early '60s and you'll hear the blueprints for heavy metal, thrash, you name it. Though rock historians always like to draw a nice, clean line between the distorted electric guitar work that fuels early blues records to the late-'60s Hendrix-Clapton-Beck-Page-Townshend mob, with no stops in between, a quick spin of any of the sides Wray recorded during his golden decade punches holes in that theory right quick. If a direct line can be traced forward from Black blues musicians crankin' up their amps and playing with a ton of violence and aggression to young white guys doing a mutated form of same, the line points straight to Link Wray, no contest. Pete Townshend summed it up for more guitarists than he probably realized when he said, "He is the king; if it hadn't been for Link Wray and "'Rumble,'" I would have never picked up a guitar."
01:18 - 2 - He his brothers:
Everything that was handed down to today's current crop of headbangers from the likes of Led Zeppelin and the Who can be traced back to the guy of Shawnee Native American parentage from Dunn, North Carolina, who started out in 1955 recording for Starday as a member of Lucky Wray & the Palomino Ranch Hands. You see, back in the early '50s, it was a different ball game altogether. Rock & roll hadn't become a national event in the United States yet, and if you were young and wanted to succeed in the popular music business, you had two main avenues for possible career moves. You could be a pop-mush crooner like Perry Como or a hillbilly singer like the late Hank Williams, and that was about it. With country music all around him as a youth in North Carolina, the choice was obvious; Wray joined forces with his brothers Vernon and Doug, forming Lucky Wray & the Lazy Pine Wranglers, later changing the band name to the spiffier-sounding Palomino Ranch Hands. By the end of 1955, they had relocated outside of Washington, D.C., and added Shorty Horton on bass. With Link, Horton, and brothers Doug and Vernon ("Lucky," named after his gambling fortunes) handling drums and lead vocals respectively, they fell in with some local songwriters, and the results made it to vinyl as an EP on the local Kay label, with the rest of the sides being leased to Starday Records down in Texas.
But by 1958, the music had changed, and so had Wray's life. With a lung missing from a bout with tuberculosis during his stint in the Korean War, Link was advised by his doctor to let brother Vernon do all the vocalizing. So Link started stretching out more and more on the guitar, coming up with one instrumental after another. By this time, the band had sweated down to a trio, and changed its name to the Ray Men. After a brief flirtation as a teen idol -- changing his name to Ray Vernon -- the third Wray brother became the group's producer/manager. Armed with a 1953 Gibson Les Paul, a dinky Premier amp, an Elvis sneer, and a black leather jacket, Link started playing the local record hops around the D.C. area with disc jockey Milt Grant, who became his de facto manager. One night during a typical set, said Link, "They wanted me to play a stroll. I didn't know any, so I made one up. I made up "'Rumble.'"
03:42 - 3 - Inventor of RUMBLE:
"Rumble" was originally issued on Archie Bleyer's Cadence label back in 1958, and Bleyer was ready to pass on it when his daughter expressed excitement for the primitive instrumental, saying it reminded her of the rumble scenes in West Side Story. Bleyer renamed it (what its original title was back then, if any, is now lost to the mists of time), and "Rumble" jumped to number 16 on the national charts, despite the fact that it was banned from the radio in several markets (including New York City), becoming Wray's signature tune to this day. But despite the success and notoriety of "Rumble," it turned out to be Wray's only release on Cadence. Bleyer, under attack for putting out a record that was "promoting teenage gang warfare," wanted to clean Link and the boys up a bit, sending them down to Nashville to cut their next session with the Everly Brothers' production team calling the shots. The Wrays didn't see it that way, so they immediately struck a deal with Epic Records. Link's follow-up to "Rumble" was the pounding, uptempo "Rawhide." The Les Paul had been swapped for a Danelectro Longhorn model (with the longest neck ever manufactured on a production line guitar), its "lipstick tube" pickups making every note of Link's power chords sound like he was strumming with a tin can lid for a pick. The beat and sheer blister of it all was enough to get it up to number 23 on the national charts, and every kid who wore a black leather jacket and owned a hot rod had to have it.
But a pattern was emerging that would continue throughout much of Wray's early career; the powers that be figured that if they could tone him down and dress him up, they'd sell way more records in the bargain. What all these producers and record execs failed to realize was the simplest of truths: if Duane Eddy twanged away for teenage white America, Link Wray played for juvenile delinquent hoods, plain and simple. By the end of 1960, Wray found himself in the mucho-confining position of recording with full orchestras, doing dreck like "Danny Boy" and "Claire de Lune." But when these gems failed to chart as well, relations with Epic came to a close, and by year's end, Link and Vern formed their own label, Rumble Records.
Rumble's three lone issues included the original version of Wray's next big hit, "Jack the Ripper." If "Rumble" sounded like gang warfare, then "Jack the Ripper" sounded like a high-speed car chase, which is exactly what it became the movie soundtrack for in the Richard Gere version of Breathless. Link's amp was recorded at the end of a hotel staircase for maximum echo effect, while he pumped riffs through it that would become the seeds of a million metal songs. After kicking up noise locally for a couple of years, it was going through another period of disc jockey spins when Swan Records of Philadelphia picked it up and got it nationwide attention. Certainly Wray was at his most prolific during his tenure with Swan, and label president Bernie Binnick gave Link and Vernon pretty much free rein to do what they wanted. Turning the family chicken coop into a crude three-track studio, the Wray family spent the next decade recording and experimenting with sounds and styles.
At least now they could succeed -- or fail -- on their own terms. Most of these sides were leased out as one-shot deals to a zillion microscopic labels under a variety of names like the Moon Men, the Spiders, the Fender Benders, etc. What fueled this period of maximum creativity is open to debate. A lot of it had to do with the fact that Link and the boys honed their particular brand of rockin' mayhem working some of the grimiest joints on the face of the planet when these tracks were cut. When Swan label chief Binnick was questioned as to how he could issue such wild-ass material, he would smile, throw his hands up in the air and say, "What can you do with an animal like that?"
07:27 - 4 - Returned solo:
As the new decade dawned, Link Wray's sound and image were updated for the hippie marketplace. Wray's career fortunes waxed and waned throughout the '70s, a muddle of albums in a laid-back style doing little to enhance his reputation. After a stint backing '70s rockabilly revivalist Robert Gordon, Wray went solo again, taking most of Gordon's band (including drummer Anton Fig) with him. But if the studio sides were a bit uneven, he still could pack a wallop live, and his rare forays on the stages of the world spread the message that rock & roll's original wild guitar man still had plenty of gas left in the tank.
Wray married and moved to Denmark in 1980, recording the stray album for the foreign market, and throughout the 1990s he was still capable of strapping on a guitar and making it sound nastier than anyone in his sixties had a right to. And his back catalog got a lot attention in the '90s when the grunge revolution hit, with several young, hip guitarists citing Wray as an influence, and his early work continued to be reissued under various imprints. He recorded two new albums for Ace Records, Shadowman in 1997 and Barbed Wire in 2000 and toured up until his death in Copenhagen on November 5, 2005

Rainbow colored starfish devour sea lion under the sea
00:00 - Rainbow colored starfish devour sea lion under the sea
00:06 - 1 - Photos:
An award-winning photographer has captured the somber moment when dozens of colorful starfish set about devouring a lifeless sea lion on the seafloor in California.
Wildlife photographer David Slater captured the haunting photo in the shallow waters of Monterey Bay. The dead sea lion and its compatriots swimming in the background are most likely California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), but they could also be Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), based on the two species' geographical ranges. The sea stars are all bat stars (Patiria miniata), scavenging starfish that come in a wide range of colors. The bat stars play a key role in recycling the sea lion into energy and nutrients, returning its remains to the marine food web.
The eerie image recently won first place in the "Aquatic Life" category at the California Academy of Science's Big Picture Competition(opens in new tab). "I knew this image was special when I first published it but words cannot even describe how I feel taking first place in such a prestigious contest," Slater wrote on Instagram(opens in new tab). The image shows that "beauty and adventure can be found in unexpected places," he added.
01:48 - 2 - star of the bat sea:
It is unclear how the sea lion in the image died. It may have died from natural causes or been killed by anthropogenic factors, such as a vessel strike, plastic ingestion or entanglement in fishing gear. However, California sea lion populations are actually sharply increasing in size and are listed as "least concern" on the International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species(opens in new tab).
2 - star of the bat sea:
Bat stars get their name from the webbing that grows between their arms, which resembles a bat's wings. The starfish typically have five arms but can have as many as nine, and the animals grow to be up to 8 inches (20 centimeters) across, according to Monterey Bay Aquarium(opens in new tab). They have been documented in a range of colors but are most commonly red, orange, yellow, brown, green or purple.
Bat stars have light-sensing "eye-spots" at the end of each arm, and olfactory cells on the bottom of their arms enable them to "taste" chemicals left by small invertebrates or corpses in the water. When bat stars find food they push out one of their two stomachs through their mouths and release digestive enzymes to break down their meal before ingesting it, according to Monterey Bay Aquarium.
02:38 - 3 - Your worms:
These starfish also have tiny, symbiotic worms that live in the grooves on the underside of the stars' bodies and feed on scraps left behind by their hosts. A single bat star can support up to 20 of these worms, so there may be more than 100 worms in the new image that are busily digesting bits of sea lion.
As scavengers, the bat stars and their hitchhiking worms play an important role in this ocean ecosystem by recycling nutrients and energy from the top of the food chain back to the bottom.
"While this scene appears melancholic, rest assured the sea lion is giving back to the community with which it once swam," competition organizers wrote on the Big Picture website. "When the bat stars have had their fill, any number of creatures big and small will [also] be able to derive energy and shelter from what’s left behind for years to come."
03:29 - 4 - climate change:
However, bat stars may be under threat due to climate change. Rising ocean temperatures have helped to spread a new disease known as sea star wasting syndrome, which first emerged in Alaska in 2013. The Ovations
00:00 - The Ovations
00:03 - 1 - Start:
Memphis was by no means overrun with R & B vocal groups during the 1960s.
Sensational single soul artists proliferated at Stax/Volt, Hi, and the city's other top labels, but a mere handful of groups were built to last. The Ovations headed that short but select list, requiring only three members to serve up a series of immaculate 45s for Goldwax Records. The Ovations were fronted by lilting tenor Louis Williams, whose uncanny vocal resemblance to the late Sam Cooke was no accident. "I loved Sam Cooke so. I just idolized him. So I just wanted to sing everything he put out," says Louis, bom February 24, 1941 in Memphis.
"I heard some Soul Stirrers things. Then when he put 'You Send Me' out, boy-mat flipped me!"
00:56 - 2 - First success:
Rounded out by Nathan "Pedro" Lewis and Elvin Lee Jones, the Ovations gave Goldwax its first national hit in the spring of 1965 with their breathtaking "It's Wonderful To Be hi Love." Louis had previously been with the Del-Rios, who made a fine 1962 Stax single, "There's A Love" b/w "Just Across The Street." "I started in church, singing around the neighborhoods. I went to Booker T. Washington High School, sung with a group called the Montclairs," says Louis. "At that time, I was a background singer. I didn't want to chance no lead, because I loved backgrounds so much. I loved to sing in the background, and move with the steps. That's where I was 'til I got with a group called the Del-Rios." For a long time, future Stax star William Bell fronted the Del-Rios. "He had a record called 'You Don't Miss Your Water,'" says Williams. "It was a hit for him, so he left the group. That's when I got Nathan with me."
Bom July 30, 1943, Nathan was already experienced when he joined the Del Rios. "I was out in south Memphis with little old groups, doowoppin' up under the street post light," says the Memphis native, whose El Salvadors caught the ear of a local grocery store owner. "He said, 'You all got a song that you think you might want to record?' We said, 'Yeah, we've got two tunes we wrote.' He said, 'What's the name of 'em?' We said, '"Shimmy In The Daytime, Shimmy At Night." And we got another one, "Fall Is Here.'" He said, 'Okay, we'll try to work on cuttin' these two tunes.' Well, he changed our name from the El Salvadors to Bamey & the Googles! We didn't like it. We went, 'Bamey & the Googles-where'd you get that?' His name was Bamey, Bamey Shillingstein. So he felt comfortable with Bamey. But what about the Googles? Where did that come in? We just didn't want anybody calling us the Googles! "Bamey took us to a guy that had a jewelry store here in Memphis, Shimmy Alabaster," he says. "Shillingstein knew Alabaster, and they got together and did this little project." "Fall Is Here" b/w "Doin' The Shimmy" emerged in 1960 on Shimmy Records by Bamey & the Googles. "They recorded that one record. A big old fat, thick record. And we were all clustered around at the store, and had told the people in the neighborhood to listen. And I think Bamey got 'em to play it on the radio about one or two times. Oh, we thought we were really a real group then!"
03:38 - 3 - Big step:
Being a Del-Rio was a major step up from being a Google. "I met them when I was downtown at my aunt's beauty shop on Beale Street, on 4th and Beale," says Nathan. "Some of the members of the Del-Rios group, Louis Williams and Robert Huntley, would come by the beauty shop, Robert and Louis Liked the way L sounded when we would be back ia-the backroom- going over little tunes. So they suggested that they would tell Harry (Hamson Austin) about my tenor, and they would suggest putting me in the group. So they talked to Harry about it. Harry said, 'Tell him to come up to the Flamingo Room tomorrow.' I went up there, did the interview. "Harry was in the group then, Robert, Louis, and myself," says Nathan. "So we march in there as the Del-Rios. William Bell had just left the group. I wind up inheriting Bell's uniform. So we perform happily as the Del-Rios. Clifford Miller, the owner of the Flamingo Room, sponsored all the uniforms that we used. And we kept a packed house every night." The Del-Rios were soon strengthened by a new member they discovered in Monroe, La. "A paper boy used to come by when we'd be rehearsing at the little hotel we were staying at," says Nathan. "He told us his name was Norman West. He heard us in there rehearsing, so he told us that he played organ, had been to college-had one year ofcollege-and he was interested in music. But he never had a chance to show it. So he noticed that we would go up to Ivory Joe Hunter's house every day. "Norman said, 'Do you think you all could get him to let me come in and sit around with you guys?' I said, 'I'm sure we can!' And Norman did a couple of songs with us, and it worked out well. The guy could walk on his hands, he was acrobatic. Louis was doing splits. So everybody had something to add to the group. Plus Norman played the organ. That was the fast member in the group that really had knowledge of the music. And he could sing real well," says Nathan. "He got on the organ, and the group was tight and right. Well, that went on for about a year or so. Then Norman was drafted into the Army, and Harry Austin, who was the business manager and had been with the group a long time, something made him think it was a good idea to go to Detroit. So the group started dwindling down.
Robert Huntley left the group and went over and started doing things at Stax. So that left Louis and myself. "Willie Mitchell contacted me and Louis. Said, 'Look, I've got some dates. Would you guys be interested in backgrounding Don Bryant on these dates that I've got? You all will be the Four Canes.' So he got one member out of the Canes group. 'So it'll be you, Louis, and Elvin Lee Jones,'" recalls Nathan. "We noticed from that experience on that outing that we had a solid background behind Don. And we knew Louis' potential as a lead singer. So we functioned as the Four Canes to do those dates, and something came to us, said, 'Well, let's work on something original with the harmony sound that we've got, and see what we can come up with.'" With Louis as lead and Nathan and Lee providing scintillating harmonies, three voices were enough. "We had this guy down the street that was working at the blood bank, Roosevelt Jamison.
He was interested in the music. He had been sort of a kin to gospel singers like O.V. Wright, James Carr," says Nathan. "Roosevelt used to listen to us sing. He said, 'Look, man, I know some guys that's interested in cutting some people. Would you guys be interested in coming down to the blood bank this evening after it closes? I'm going to have them down there, and you all show 'em what you got.' "We met the people down at the blood bank, two white gentlemen-Rudolph Russell and Quinton Claunch." The pair owned Goldwax. "We presented our tunes. They said, 'Do you all know a band that can play those tunes?' We said, 'Yeah!' They said, 'Who?' We said, 'Bowlegs Miller.' They said, 'Well, get in touch with Bowlegs and work the stuff up, and we want to cut it.' So they got in touch with Chips Moman over at American Studio. Bowlegs came over, I think we did two tunes. Then we had to come up with a name. So we came up with the Ovations. So Louis, Lee and myself started off with the group and the name Ovations."
08:12 - 4 - The newly created:
The newly minted Ovations' Goldwax debut coupled two fine group-penned originals, "Pretty Little Angel" and "Won't You Call." But it was their self-generated encore that propelled the Ovations onto the national touring circuit. "Sam Cooke had a tune called 'Wonderful,' a spiritual. I started writing a couple of lines, some lines on 'It's Wonderful To Be In Love,'" says Louis. "Me and Nathan and Lee just finished it up." Cut at Moman's fledgling facility, the song felt like a smash from the outset. "We went in the studio at six o'clock that evening, and come out six o'clock that morning. And everybody was rejoicing. I come up and told my mama, 'I know we got a hit! I know it, Mama!'" says Louis. "And boy, when that thing came out, it shook Memphis!" "It's Wonderful To Be In Love" climbed to # 22 R & B and # 61 pop on Billboard's national charts during the spring of '65. Jamison supplied the up-tempo flip, "Dance Party." By late June, the trio was touring nationally.

Wibert harrison
00:00 - Wibert harrison
00:04 - 1 - Wilbert Harrison Biography
Perceived by casual oldies fans as a two-hit wonder (for his 1959 chart-topper "Kansas City" and a heartwarming "Let's Work Together" a full decade later), Wilbert Harrison actually left behind a varied body of work that blended an intriguing mélange of musical idioms into something quite distinctive.
00:24 - 2 - Start:
Country and gospel strains filtered into Wilbert Harrison's consciousness as a youth in North Carolina. When he got out of the Navy in Miami around 1950, he began performing in a calypso-based style. Miami entrepreneur Henry Stone signed Harrison to his Rockin' logo in 1953; his debut single, "This Woman of Mine," utilized the very same melody as his later reading of "Kansas City" (the first rendition of the Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller composition by pianist Little Willie Littlefield came out in 1952, doubtless making an impression). Its flip, a country-tinged "Letter Edged in Black," exhibited Harrison's eclectic mindset.
After moving to Newark, New Jersey, Harrison wandered by the headquarters of Savoy Records one fortuitous day and was snapped up by producer Fred Mendelsohn. Harrison recorded several sessions for Savoy, beginning with a catchy cover of Terry Fell's country tune "Don't Drop It." Top New York sessioneers -- arranger Leroy Kirkland, saxist Buddy Lucas and guitarists Mickey Baker and Kenny Burrell -- backed Harrison on his 1954-1956 Savoy output, but hits weren't forthcoming.
01:37 - 3 - Discovery:
That changed instantly when Harrison waxed his driving "Kansas City" for Harlem entrepreneur Bobby Robinson in 1959. With a barbed-wire guitar solo by Wild Jimmy Spruill igniting Harrison's no-frills piano and clenched vocal, "Kansas City" paced both the R&B and pop charts soon after its issue on Fury Records (not bad for a $40 session). Only one minor problem: Harrison was still technically under contract to Savoy (though label head Herman Lubinsky had literally run him out of his office some years earlier!), leading to all sorts of legal wrangles that finally went Robinson's way. Momentum for any Fury follow-ups had been fatally blunted in the interim, despite fine attempts with "Cheatin' Baby," the sequel "Goodbye Kansas City," and "Let's Stick Together."
Harrison bounced from Neptune to Doc to Constellation to Port to Vest with little in the way of tangible rewards before unexpectedly making a comeback in 1969 with an infectious re-recording of his 1962 "Let's Stick Together" single under the title "Let's Work Together" for Juggy Murray's Sue imprint. The song proved a popular cover item -- Canned Heat revived it shortly thereafter, and Bryan Ferry chimed in with his treatment of the original "Let's Stick Together" later on. Alas, it was an isolated happenstance -- apart from "My Heart Is Yours," a bottom-end chart entry on SSS International in 1971, no more hits were in Wilbert's future. But Harrison soldiered on, sometimes as a one-man band, for years to come.

Scientists grow food without sunlight
00:00 - Scientists grow food without sunlight
00:05 - 1 - Discovery:
Scientists have found a way to bypass the need for biological photosynthesis altogether and create food independent of sunlight by using artificial photosynthesis. The technology uses a two-step electrocatalytic process to convert carbon dioxide, electricity, and water into acetate. Food-producing organisms then consume acetate in the dark to grow. The hybrid organic-inorganic system could increase the conversion efficiency of sunlight into food, up to 18 times more efficient for some foods.
Photosynthesis has evolved in plants for millions of years to turn water, carbon dioxide, and the energy from sunlight into plant biomass and the foods we eat. This process, however, is very inefficient, with only about 1% of the energy found in sunlight ending up in the plant. Scientists at UC Riverside and the University of Delaware have found a way to bypass the need for biological photosynthesis altogether and create food independent of sunlight by using artificial photosynthesis.
The research, published in Nature Food, uses a two-step electrocatalytic process to convert carbon dioxide, electricity, and water into acetate, the form of the main component of vinegar. Food-producing organisms then consume acetate in the dark to grow. Combined with solar panels to generate the electricity to power the electrocatalysis, this hybrid organic-inorganic system could increase the conversion efficiency of sunlight into food, up to 18 times more efficient for some foods.
"With our approach we sought to identify a new way of producing food that could break through the limits normally imposed by biological photosynthesis," said corresponding author Robert Jinkerson, a UC Riverside assistant professor of chemical and environmental engineering.
01:56 - 2 - Last generation:
In order to integrate all the components of the system together, the output of the electrolyzer was optimized to support the growth of food-producing organisms. Electrolyzers are devices that use electricity to convert raw materials like carbon dioxide into useful molecules and products. The amount of acetate produced was increased while the amount of salt used was decreased, resulting in the highest levels of acetate ever produced in an electrolyzer to date.
"Using a state-of-the-art two-step tandem CO2 electrolysis setup developed in our laboratory, we were able to achieve a high selectivity towards acetate that cannot be accessed through conventional CO2 electrolysis routes," said corresponding author Feng Jiao at University of Delaware.
Experiments showed that a wide range of food-producing organisms can be grown in the dark directly on the acetate-rich electrolyzer output, including green algae, yeast, and fungal mycelium that produce mushrooms. Producing algae with this technology is approximately fourfold more energy efficient than growing it photosynthetically. Yeast production is about 18-fold more energy efficient than how it is typically cultivated using sugar extracted from corn.
03:10 - 3 - Cultivation:
"We were able to grow food-producing organisms without any contributions from biological photosynthesis. Typically, these organisms are cultivated on sugars derived from plants or inputs derived from petroleum -- which is a product of biological photosynthesis that took place millions of years ago. This technology is a more efficient method of turning solar energy into food, as compared to food production that relies on biological photosynthesis," said Elizabeth Hann, a doctoral candidate in the Jinkerson Lab and co-lead author of the study.
The potential for employing this technology to grow crop plants was also investigated. Cowpea, tomato, tobacco, rice, canola, and green pea were all able to utilize carbon from acetate when cultivated in the dark.
"We found that a wide range of crops could take the acetate we provided and build it into the major molecular building blocks an organism needs to grow and thrive. With some breeding and engineering that we are currently working on we might be able to grow crops with acetate as an extra energy source to boost crop yields," said Marcus Harland-Dunaway, a doctoral candidate in the Jinkerson Lab and co-lead author of the study.
04:24 - 4 - Open doors:
By liberating agriculture from complete dependence on the sun, artificial photosynthesis opens the door to countless possibilities for growing food under the increasingly difficult conditions imposed by anthropogenic climate change. Drought, floods, and reduced land availability would be less of a threat to global food security if crops for humans and animals grew in less resource-intensive, controlled environments. Crops could also be grown in cities and other areas currently unsuitable for agriculture, and even provide food for future space explorers.
"Using artificial photosynthesis approaches to produce food could be a paradigm shift for how we feed people. By increasing the efficiency of food production, less land is needed, lessening the impact agriculture has on the environment. And for agriculture in non-traditional environments, like outer space, the increased energy efficiency could help feed more crew members with less inputs," said Jinkerson.
This approach to food production was submitted to NASA's Deep Space Food Challenge where it was a Phase I winner. The Deep Space Food Challenge is an international competition where prizes are awarded to teams to create novel and game-changing food technologies that require minimal inputs and maximize safe, nutritious, and palatable food outputs for long-duration space missions.

Billy Paul obituary
00:00 - Billy Paul obituary
00:03 - 1 - History:
Me and Mrs Jones, which tells the tale of a man’s infatuation with his married lover, was one of the classic soul songs of the 1970s. It was performed with jazzy cool by Billy Paul, who has died of pancreatic cancer aged 81. A key figure in the success of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff’s “Philly sound”, in his best performances Paul combined jazz technique with rhythm and blues fervour.
He was born Paul Williams in North Philadelphia. His was a musical family – and he studied his mother’s collection of jazz records by such singers as Nat King Cole and Billie Holiday. Paul made his first radio broadcast at the age of 11, before studying at the West Philadelphia Music school and the Granoff School of Music. At 16 he appeared at Club Harlem in Philadelphia on the same bill as the saxophonist Charlie Parker. Paul recalled that: “Bird told me if I kept struggling I’d go a long way; and I’ve never forgotten his words.”
01:04 - 2 - Start:
He was soon playing at venues outside Pennsylvania – and in 1951, at the Apollo theatre in Harlem, New York, his manager persuaded him to create a stage name to avoid confusion with the saxophonist Paul Williams. In 1957 his career was interrupted by military service. Paul was posted to Germany, where his unit included both Elvis Presley and Gary Crosby, son of Bing. According to Paul, Elvis was not interested in playing music during his military service, but Paul and Crosby formed a jazz band which toured throughout Germany.
Returning to his civilian life, Paul resumed his career as a jazz singer, until in 1967, Gamble and Huff signed him to a recording deal. The first album, Feelin’ Good at the Cadillac Club (1968), was a recreation of Paul’s club act, but its successor, Ebony Woman (1970), added a more contemporary soul element. It sold enough copies to become a Top 20 hit on the soul charts.
In 1970, Gamble and Huff started their Philadelphia International label with backing from CBS Records. Following the Motown model, they set up their own studios, Sigma Sound, with its own group of session musicians. Paul became one of the label’s stalwarts, alongside Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the O’Jays and Archie Bell.
Paul released the album Going East in 1971, before Me and Mrs Jones and its accompanying album, 360 Degrees of Billy Paul, made the commercial breakthrough the following year. A British reviewer attributed the song’s success to its “slyly insinuating mixture of iced vocal and emotive story line”.
02:50 - 3 - In the best way:
The single sold over 2m copies in the US alone and became an international hit, reaching No 12 in Britain early in 1973. That year, Paul toured Europe with the O’Jays and the Intruders, recording a live album at the London show. Me and Mrs Jones went on to win the Grammy award for best male rhythm and blues vocal performance, despite strong competition from Ray Charles and Curtis Mayfield.
The follow-up to Me and Mrs Jones was Am I Black Enough for You?, a controversial paean to black power which alienated many radio station managers and much of the white audience that had bought its predecessor. Paul’s only subsequent mainstream pop hit was to be Thanks for Saving My Life in 1974.
His recordings nevertheless remained popular with black audiences, despite further controversy over the title of a 1976 single Let’s Make a Baby. Although the lyrics also had a strong black pride element in their reference to raising a child to “walk around with his head held tall”, the song’s sexual content led some moral leaders, including the Rev Jesse Jackson, to urge broadcasters to ban the disc.
Paul continued to record for Gamble and Huff’s company until 1980. A highlight of his later albums was a version of Paul McCartney’s song Let ’Em In, to whose lyrics Billy Paul added references to heroes of the civil rights struggle, including Malcolm X and Medgar Evers. Two decades later, Paul sued Philadelphia International for underpayment of royalties for Me and Mrs Jones and was awarded $500,000 by the jury.
In later years, he continued to appear at clubs and jazz festivals in the US and abroad. A biographical film, Am I Black Enough for You?, directed by Göran Hugo Olsson, was released in 2009.
04:40 - 4 - Death:
After a brief period in hospital, Paul died at his home in Blackwood, New Jersey. He is survived by his wife, Blanche, who managed his career for many

History of the Atari 2600
00:00 - History of the Atari 2600
When Atari released its arcade game Pong as a pre-programmed dedicated home gaming unit, it was a monumental hit and soon mimicked by every electronics manufacturer imaginable. In just a few years shelves were flooded with clones and variations, some even going as far as to use the same microchip. To maintain their position as the industry leader, Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell sought to create a new generation of video game systems. To do this Atari purchased Cyan Engineering, who had already been working on a new console technology under the code name Stella.
00:40 - 1 - How Early Video Games Worked:
At the time, all home video game consoles used the mathematics-based Logic Technology, where variables were used to determine relations and deduction. This enabled the same or similar graphics to be reused in a limited number of basic games. The technique was innovated by Ralph Bayer's Brown Box military project that eventually became the Magnavox Odyssey. This is also why all the home video games of the first generation of consoles all looked the same.
01:11 - 2 - Finding and Developing the Right Tech:
Instead of logic technology, Cyan's Stella project utilized a central processing unit (CPU) called MOS Technology 6502, an 8-bit microprocessor that was introduced in 1975 as the least expensive processor on the market. This allowed program information to be processed from a microchip quickly without breaking the bank. The next question was how to deliver multiple game programs from an external source.
In 1972, Hewlett-Packard started using ROM cartridges, a shell housing a Read-Only Memory chip containing a program file that connected to the computer via a cartridge slot. The ROM cartridges offered the perfect solution for Stella. Game files were stored on the ROM cartridge via the addition of a random access memory (RAM) chip, and the MOS Technology 6502 processor read the program information via an input/output (I/O) chip. Logistics aside, what made this the ideal solution was the low cost of the ROM Cartridges, and with Cyan's self-developed Television Interface Adaptor (TIA) sound chip, both graphics and sound solutions were complete.
02:25 - 3 - Atari Partners With Warner Communications:
With all of the simultaneous technology happening at once, it was no surprise that another company would be developing the same concept at the same time, and the Fairchild Semiconductor Company beat Atari to the market in 1976 with the Fairchild Video Entertainment System (later called the Fairchild Channel F) which used the Fairchild F8 CPU, developed by Intel creator Robert Noyce.
Atari was financially deep in the development of Stella and needed more revenue and power to make a release happen. Going public was not an option as the stock market was on a steep decline. With the threat of losing the entire market share at the hands of Channel F, Nolan Bushnell turned to a partnership with Warner Communications, (today known as Time Warner) which eventually became a buyout. Bushnell remained on staff to run the business.
03:19 - 4 - 1977: The Atari 2600 Debuts:
When the Stella was finally completed and released in 1977 its name was changed to the Atari Video Computer System, but later changed again to the now infamous Atari 2600, after its manufacturing part number CX2600. At first, the 2600 released with a lackluster reception, but word got around fast and by 1979 it was a hit, selling over a million units in just that year alone. Unfortunately, the tumultuous times leading up to its success took a toll on Bushnell's relationship with Warner Communications. Bushnell left the company in 1978, just a year shy of witnessing the console's great success.
Over the next several years Atari continued to make history, outselling all of the competition with its ever-growing install base and library of games. Its biggest competition, the Channel F, didn't have the graphics or sound capabilities of the 2600, nor a corporate giant such as Warner Communications behind it. Although Channel F was the first of its kind, only 26 titles were ever released for it, and Fairchild soon succumbed to Atari sales dominance.
04:34 - 5 - The Dramatic Rise and Fall of the Atari 2600:
Atari's enormous success inevitably led to its very own downfall. As the company was now corporately run, the programmers became dissatisfied with their treatment. Atari had gone from a casual and fun workplace under Bushnell's management, to a stuffy, corporate gig with little acknowledgment or reward of a job well done, a structure the video game publishing industry still suffers from today. Soon the programmers that helped build the Atari empire started to leave and form their own companies to publish games for the 2600.
As the idea of a console with interchangeable games was still a new concept, and the previous generation of video game systems all cloning off one another, the copyright, patent, and trademark laws weren’t set up to protect first-party console manufacturers as they are today. Soon the market was flooded with games, all designed for the 2600 and many made by former Atari programmers who jumped ship. These third-party publishers were able to work around the rights issues by never using the Atari logo, adding a disclaimer that they were not related to Atari Inc., and only acknowledging that the cartridge was designed for the "Atari Video Game System".
05:49 - 6 - The Video Game Crash of 1983:
Soon Atari began suffering from the same woes that brought on the demise of Pong. Not with look-alike games, but with an overwhelming number of companies rushing to get a piece of that 2600 gold, with a tidal wave of unofficial games. Many of these games were low in content and quality. Even Atari's self-published titles began to suffer due to rushed production cycles and most of their top programmers having already resigned.
Although many cite the release of the ill-fated E.T. game for the 2600 as the beginning of Atari's downfall and the oncoming of the Video Game Industry Crash of 1983, it was more of an accumulation - too many games, too low of quality, and very little technology growth in homes and arcades. Warner sold-off Atari in 1984 to Commodore Business Machines who immediately closed the game publishing wing.
06:46 - 7 - The Legacy of the Atari 2600:
In 1986, Commodore released a redesigned version of the 2600 as a budget title with the marketing tagline "The Fun Is Back!" The system sold moderately well but eventually came to an end in 1990. To this day the Atari 2600 remains the longest selling home video game console ever and many of its more popular titles are seeing re-releases for next-gen gaming consoles and handhelds, and pre-programmed plug-n-play units as retro collections.

Dinosaur-killing asteroid most likely struck in spring
00:00 - Dinosaur-killing asteroid most likely struck in spring
00:06 - 1 - Life on Earth:
The impact that ended the age of dinosaurs some 66 million years ago was the worst single day that life on Earth has ever endured. A six-mile-wide asteroid called Chicxulub slammed into the waters off what is now Mexico, triggering a mass extinction that killed off more than 75 percent of Earth’s species.
Unfathomably powerful earthquakes rattled and rolled the planet’s crust. Tsunamis more than 150 feet tall pummeled North America’s shores. Wildfires ignited hundreds to thousands of miles away from the impact site, set ablaze by the searing heat of the asteroid’s initial impact plume and the torrents of debris that followed.
Hundreds of sites around the world preserve vestiges of this cataclysm—but at one unusual site in North Dakota, fossil fish that seem to have died within an hour of the impact hold a crucial piece of information: Life on Earth suffered this devastating blow on a fateful spring day.
The growth patterns in the fish’s fossilized bones, described in a new study published in Nature, suggest that they perished just as their growth was speeding up from an abundance of food, consistent with death during springtime. The new findings also add to growing evidence that the Chicxulub impact was a worst-case scenario.
After the initial calamity, life on Earth faced a horrifying “nuclear winter” that persisted for months to years after the impact, the phase of the extinction event that claimed the most species. Gasses and particles were flung high into the atmosphere and blotted out the sun, causing temperatures to plummet by more than 60 degrees Fahrenheit and cutting the Mesozoic’s ecosystems down at the knees.
But if the asteroid truly struck in the Northern Hemisphere’s springtime, many creatures there didn’t live long enough to face this global darkness: During spring, most of the hemisphere’s flora and fauna would have been out looking for food and mates. Meanwhile, Southern Hemisphere animals would have been preparing to hunker down for fall and winter, possibly giving them a slight edge in the initial phase of the catastrophe.
02:09 - 2 - How will it be after impact:
“If you don't survive the impact, you don't even have a fighting chance in the nuclear winter,” says lead study author Melanie During, a Ph.D. candidate at Uppsala University in Sweden. “I don’t think you could have picked a worse season.”
02:25 - 3 - Fish frozen in time:
The study is the latest to examine the exquisite fossils at North Dakota’s Tanis site, where sturgeon and paddlefish were killed and buried en masse. Debris embedded in the fish’s gills suggests that they died within an hour or so of the impact. A New Yorker article from 2019 describes many other fossil treasures from the site that have yet to be scientifically published. (Find out more about the fossils at the Tanis site.)
The site—named for the “lost” ancient Egyptian city—lies on private ranch land within a tiny outcrop of the larger Hell Creek Formation, a series of rock layers that record hundreds of millennia leading up to the dinosaurs' extinction. In 2017 During, then a master’s student at the Free University Amsterdam, visited Tanis with a team that included Jan Smit, a paleontologist at the university, and Robert DePalma, the paleontologist who was leading excavations at the site.
According to Smit, this part of North America 66 million years ago was a river valley cut more than 33 feet deep into the surrounding floodplains. When Chicxulub struck, the impact triggered powerful temblors that raced outward through the continental crust and reached Tanis within 15 to 30 minutes. The quaking land sent waves from an inland sea careening upriver into the Tanis site, rapidly burying whatever was in the water there at the time.
Meanwhile, Chicxulub’s debris flew high into the atmosphere and coalesced into tiny, glassy blobs. These particles, called tektites, started raining down about 15 minutes after the impact. Remarkably, the sediments at Tanis preserve funnels bored into the ground by tektites from on high. The fish also have tektites embedded in their gills, but nowhere else in their digestive tract or bodies, which implies that these fish died just after the tektites started to rain into the river.
Clues of this destruction can be found across the site. In one layer of sediment, the fish all face to the left; in the next layer up, they all face to the right, as if the fish had been sloshed around and buried as crashing waves repeatedly advanced and retreated. “I keep comparing it to a massive traffic-crash catastrophe, then just frozen in place,” During says.
04:44 - 4 - Clues in ancient fish bones:
During and Smit returned to the Netherlands with several of the Tanis site’s sturgeon and paddlefish, where they set to work analyzing the bones. Certain bones within these fish grow in layers over time, much like tree rings. By analyzing clues in these layers, their team hoped to work out the season during which the fish died.
The filter-feeding paddlefish, for example, preserved changes in the chemistry of their food. The photosynthetic plankton they ate are more productive in the spring and summer than they are in the fall or winter. As the plankton’s productivity spikes, so too does their amount of carbon-13, an isotope that’s slightly heavier than the far more common isotope carbon-12.
05:29 - 5 - Analysis:
By analyzing the chemical makeup of each layer within a paddlefish bone, During’s team found that when the paddlefish died, its carbon-13 values were on the upswing but hadn’t yet reached their peak—one sign of a springtime death.
The team also analyzed the bones’ growth patterns. Using the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, a particle accelerator that makes the world’s brightest x-rays, During and her colleagues made CT scans of these bones. Their goal: to analyze in exacting detail how the bone’s microstructure varied with the seasons.
In the spring and summer, when food is more plentiful, the fish grow faster, which makes the bone deposited during these periods spongier and more porous. In the lean times of fall and winter, the fish’s growth slows down, leaving behind telltale solid layers called “lines of arrested growth” in the bones. During’s team measured this change from the bones’ interiors to their youngest outermost layers. The result: All the fish died during an upswing in their growth rate that hadn’t quite peaked, a period consistent with spring.
With two lines of evidence both pointing to the same season, the researchers are more confident in their conclusions. “That’s why I feel our study does an exceptional job of narrowing it down to a single season,” says study co-author Dennis Voeten, a researcher at Uppsala University.
06:54 - 6 - Life in different hemispheres:
The new study of the Tanis fish is not the only research of its kind: In December 2021 a separate team led by DePalma published their own analysis of the season captured at Tanis in the journal Scientific Reports. The two papers rely on different fossils and use different techniques, yet they reach broadly similar conclusions. DePalma’s results suggest that Chicxulub hit in the spring or summer, consistent with During’s more constrained finding of a springtime impact.
“We applaud independent research work and analyses, and are pleased that these projects complement each other to lead to a richer understanding of the prehistoric world,” DePalma, a professor at Florida Atlantic University and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Manchester, said in an emailed statement.

$1 Million Chess Piece Found, Lewis Chessman
00:00 - $1 Million Chess Piece Found, Lewis Chessman
00:06 - 1 - What is Lewis Chessman?
The Lewis Chessmen, or Uig Chessmen, are 78 12th-century chess pieces, most of which are carved in walrus ivory. The hoard was discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. They may be some of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets. They are owned and exhibited by the British Museum in London, which has 67 of the original pieces, and the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, which has the remaining 11 pieces.
The pieces are figurative, like modern sets, and unlike the abstract Arabic pieces. The set has made the transition to European figures, which lasts to the present day. In particular, the arrival of a female figure is a departure from the Indo-Arabic game, and the figure of a bishop is also significant.
00:59 - 2 - Meeting:
When an antiques dealer in Scotland bought an ivory chessman for £5 ($6) in 1964, he probably had no inkling that he had taken possession of one of the most famous chess pieces in the world.
Stored in a drawer for 55 years, the Lewis Warder, as the piece is known, could now fetch up to £1 million ($1.3 million) at auction after the late owner's family took it to Sotheby's auction house in London for assessment.
The Lewis Chessmen were found on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides in 1831, but the circumstances of their discovery are shrouded in mystery. With 93 pieces found -- the majority carved from walrus ivory -- the set was missing one knight and four "warders."
The leading theory about their origin is that they were carved between the late 12th and early 13th centuries in Trondheim, Norway, Sotheby's said in a press release.
01:55 - 3 - It is part of a coercion:
Of the 93 pieces discovered in 1831, 82 are in the British Museum in London while 11 are in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.
The new discovery is a 3.5-inch warder, a bearded figure with a sword in his right hand and shield at his left side. In modern chess it would be the equivalent of a rook. It will be auctioned at Sotheby's London on July 2, the first time any of the Lewis Chessmen has been auctioned.
A spokesperson for the family, which wishes to remain anonymous, said in a statement that the warder was cataloged in the antiques dealer's purchase ledger as "Antique Walrus Tusk Warrior Chessman."
"From this description it can be assumed that he was unaware he had purchased an important historic artifact," the spokesperson said. "It was stored away in his home and then when my grandfather died my mother inherited the chess piece."
02:50 - 4 - Magic meaning:
My mother was very fond of the Chessman as she admired its intricacy and quirkiness. She believed that it was special and thought perhaps it could even have had some magical significance."
"For many years it resided in a drawer in her home where it had been carefully wrapped in a small bag. From time to time, she would remove the chess piece from the drawer in order to appreciate its uniqueness."
The Lewis Chessmen are "steeped in folklore, legend and the rich tradition of story-telling," Sotheby's said in a press release, adding that they are "an important symbol of European civilisation."
03:26 - 5 - Specialist:
Alexander Kader, the Sotheby's expert who assessed the piece for the family, told CNN that seeing the chessman for the first time was a "delightful surprise."
"I said, 'Oh my goodness, it's one of the Lewis Chessmen,'" he recalled. "The family knew they had something special, but they were quite amazed."
"The new Lewis Warder has been on a remarkable journey to get where he is today," Kader said. "Over the last year we conducted a thorough study of him, undertaking many months of detailed research, art historical analysis, research into physical condition and provenance, and careful comparison with the other Lewis Chessmen."
In a press release, Kader said: "There is certainly more to the story of this warder still to be told, about his life over the last 188 years since he was separated from his fellow chessmen, and just as interesting, about the next chapter in his journey now that he has been rediscovered."

Blue Magic
00:00 - Blue Magic
00:04 - 1 - Start:
In addition to providing long overdue recognition to one of the great 70s soul groups, the show also brought together the original members of Blue Magic for the first time in three decades, as evidenced by the picture on this page (originally posted by Ted "The Wizard" Mills on his Facebook page). The members are, from left to right: Wendell Sawyer, Richard Pratt, Ted Wizard Mills, Keith Beaton, Vernon Sawyer.
The quintet was responsible for some of the most enjoyable smooth soul of that decade. Blue Magic was formed in Philadelphia and began recording for Atlantic records in 1973. The group became one of the earliest acts produced by veteran Philly guitarist Norman Harris, who spent most of the decade in the shadow of Gamble & Huff but who masterminded a number of great albums for artists from the Trammps to the Temptations.
00:56 - 2 - Debut:
Blue Magic's debut album included a number of quality tunes, perhaps the best of which was "Look Me Up," an infectious stepper highlighted by Mills' clear falsetto, and which created early comparisons with the Stylistics. Real crossover success came in 1974 with "Sideshow," a now classic Philly forlorn ballad that topped the Soul charts and made the Pop top 10. Over the next three years Blue Magic became know mostly for smooth ballads, and the group stayed high on the Soul charts with "Three Ring Circus," "Stop to Start," and "Chasing Rainbows," before landing a big hit with the dance tune "Magic of the Blue."
01:34 - 3 - Continuity:
Blue Magic's fortunes faded as the 70s came to an end, and Richard Pratt left in the early 80s. However, they continued to record sporadically, landing two moderately successful comeback albums, 1983's Magic # and 1989's From Out of the Blue. By the 90s, lead singer Mills had left the group for a solo career, and he is still performing, mostly in multi-act soul music shows. He recently appeared in the touring play "Girl He Ain't Worth It" with the Manhattans, Me'lissa Morgan and Tito Jackson as well as joining Russell Thompkins Jr and William Hart on a 2008 Shanachie Records disc as the 3 Tenors of Soul. A reconstituted Blue Magic, consisting of the two Sawyers, Beaton and lead singer Wade Elliott, continued to tour in soul music shows and occasional television appearances, still sounding quite good. They are managed by Elaine Sawyer with promotional help from Sgt. Gary Nadler. Vernon Sawyer recounted many of the group's triumphs in a recent interview.

Timely warnings of the awakening of volcanoes
00:00 - Timely warnings of the awakening of volcanoes
00:05 - 1 - Monitoring:
Monitoring a volcano requires scientists to use of a variety of techniques that can hear and see activity inside a volcano. The USGS Volcano Hazards Program monitors volcanoes to detect signs of change that forewarn of volcanic reawakening. To fully understand a volcano's behavior, monitoring should include several types of observations (earthquakes, ground movement, volcanic gas, rock chemistry, water chemistry, remote satellite analysis) on a continuous or near-real-time basis.
00:39 - 2 -Broad networks of many instruments result in a more complete picture of volcanic activity.
Scientists collect data from the instrument networks then analyze them to look for out-of-the-ordinary signals. By comparing the data analysis with similar results from past volcanic events, volcanologists are better able to forecast changes in volcanic activity and determine whether and when a volcano might erupt in the future. Most data can be accessed from our offices in the observatories but visits to the volcanoes, when possible, add valuable information.
01:13 - 3 - Early detection of unrest with sensitive monitoring instruments helps reduce socioeconomic loss.
Rapid advances in technology are helping scientists develop efficient and accurate monitoring equipment. These new systems are capable of collecting and transmitting accurate real-time data from the volcano back to Observatory offices, which improves eruption forecasting. It is important that instruments be installed during quiet times when volcanoes are not active so that they are ready to detect the slightest bit of volcanic stirring. Early detection gives the maximum amount of time for people to prepare for an eruption.
02:08 - 4 - Monitoring data help forecast the course of an eruption once unrest is detected.
When a volcano begins showing new or unusual signs of activity, monitoring data help answer critical questions necessary for assessing and then communicating timely information about volcanic hazards. For example, prior to the 2004 eruption at Mount St. Helens monitoring equipment recorded a large increase in earthquakeactivity. Scientists quickly examined other monitoring data including gas, ground deformation, and satellite imagery to assess if magma or fluid was moving towards the surface. Based on the history of the volcano and the analysis of the monitoring data scientists were able to determine the types of magma could be moving towards the surface. This type of knowledge helps scientists figure out the possible types of volcanic activity and the associated hazards to people. Knowing the hazards helps officials determine which real-time warnings are needed to prevent loss of life and property.

Discovered 2,000-year-old lost city in Albania
00:00 - Discovered 2,000-year-old lost city in Albania
00:06 - 1 - The meeting:
The lost city was found unexpectedly in northwestern Albania, in the area of today`s Shkoder. According to the researchers, it is probably Bassania - a city described by Roman historian Livy (59 BC - AD 17) in the context of the battles of Roman troops with the last king of Illyria, Gentius.
In May, archaeologists only uncovered part of the walls and the gate. "The defensive structures were erected from well-fitted, huge stone blocks" - told PAP head of excavations, Prof. Piotr Dyczek, director of the Antiquity of Southeastern Europe Research Centre of the University of Warsaw. The uncovered gate was accompanied by two bastions, to which powerful, more than 3 m wide defensive walls led. Their external parts were made of profiled stone blocks. The space between them was filled with small stones and earth.
According to Prof. Dyczek, this type of construction is typical for Hellenistic defensive structures. Such dating is also supported by objects the archaeologists discovered near the walls: coins and fragments of ceramic vessels from IV-I century BC. This means that the city functioned in the time of the Illyrian kingdom, which ceased to exist at the turn of the millennium after the Roman invasion.
01:26 - 2 - Relics says teacher:
"In recent years, we have begun to look around Shkoder for settlements and fortresses that were its economic and military base. Thanks to the use of various methods, including non-invasive ones, we have located relics of a huge ancient city" - described Prof. Dyczek.
01:45 - 3 - Surprise:
To the surprise of the researchers, it turned out that the recently discovered city was three times larger than the ancient Shkoder - massive stone walls surrounded an area of about 20 hectares.
01:58 - 4 - geological structure:
Researchers are wondering about the lack of information about the city in the records of travellers from few hundred years ago. "This silence of the travellers, who described the other, even small sites and individual ruins with extraordinary meticulousness, is quite puzzling. The reason could be that the city had ceased to exist so long ago that its name was forgotten" - the archaeologist suggested in an interview with PAP. Recent research confirmed that the end of the city`s existence actually falls at the beginning of the 1st century AD - the end of the reign of Emperor Octavian Augustus - and at that time it was abandoned or destroyed during the Roman invasion. "Its name could have been forgotten" - says Prof. Dyczek.
The ruins on the hill escaped attention due to its specific geological structure - the hill is formed by conglomerates and sandstones. "After centuries of erosion, the remnants of stone structures looming on the surface resemble a natural geological structure coming out onto the surface, rather than structures intentionally built by man" - described the scientist.

Dublin Pride March & Parade
00:00 - Dublin Pride March & Parade
00:05 - 1 - The Pride March
While the Dublin Pride March and Parade take place at the same time and merge into each other, they are two distinct events, each with its own important purpose. Following the Stonewall uprising in 1969 it was agreed that “Out of the ideas and ideals of the greater struggle that we are involved, that of our fundamental human rights” a demonstration would take place on the last Saturday of June each year in New York and that other cities would be invited to hold similar demonstrations in solidarity. This annual event became known as Pride and the first Dublin Pride March took place in June 1974, almost a decade before the first Dublin Pride Parade.
At its heart it is protest, but it is also a display of solidarity. If you plan to take part as an individual or with your friends or family, there is no need to register, it is a free event open to everyone who supports the ideals of Pride. You can rock up on the day, watch from the side or join in and march, or a bit of both. Remember, Pride is both Protest and Celebration, you’re welcome to dress up or bring your own banners and make as much noise as you like, however they must be respectful and inclusive of our LGBTQ+ community and not create a safety hazard.
01:16 - 2 - Dublin Pride Parade
The Pride Parade is a celebration of LGBTQ+ people and culture, the highly visible spectacle of the parade plays an important role in promoting diversity, inclusion and belonging within society. It’s an opportunity to showcase the many LGBTQ+ organisations working within our community along with ally groups who take a visible stand in support of LGBTQ+ people. Since the first Dublin Pride Parade in 1983, it has grown to become one of the most popular and loved events within the city and continues to change the hearts and minds of many people.
The Pride Parade is also a major fundraising event for many LGBTQ+ community organisations with both individuals and businesses raising vital funds each year through Pride. The Dublin Pride Parade is one of the most coordinated events in the country with over 250 different groups taking part. In order to ensure the safety and comfort of everyone involved it is necessary for groups taking part to register in advance.
Community Groups: There is no fee for charities, community groups or non profit organisations wishing to take part in the Dublin Pride Parade. The first section of the Parade is reserved for LGBTQ+ community groups and charities and has a strict No corporate branding policy. If you need help in any way with your Pride participation contact community@dublinpride.ie
Corporate Groups: Fees from corporate partners not only help cover the cost of the event and ensure it remains free for the community, they also support a range of community projects all year round. There is limited availability for corporate entries so early booking is advised.

Buddy Holly
00:00 - Buddy Holly
00:04 - 1 - Who Was Buddy Holly:
Buddy Holly was an American singer/songwriter who produced some of the most distinctive and influential work in rock music. Already well versed in several music styles, he was a seasoned performer by age 16. With hits such as "Peggy Sue" and "That'll Be the Day," Holly was a rising star when a tragic plane crash struck him down in 1959 at age 22.
00:28 - 2 - Early Life:
Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas. As the fourth and youngest child in his family, Holly was nicknamed "Buddy" by his mother, who felt that his given name was too big for her little boy. "Holly," the altered form of his last name, would later result from a misspelling in his first recording contract.
Holly learned to play piano and fiddle at an early age, while his older brothers taught him the basics of guitar. A 1949 home recording of "My Two-Timin' Woman" showcases Holly's skilled, if prepubescent, singing voice. Holly's mother and father, a tailor by trade, both proved to be very supportive of their son's burgeoning musical talents, generating song ideas and even penning a letter to the editor of Lubbock's newspaper in defense of rock 'n' roll-loving teenagers lambasted in a conservative editorial. Despite his parents' support, Holly couldn't have become a founding father of rock 'n' roll without engaging in some degree of rebellion. Once a preacher at the local Tabernacle Baptist Church asked him, "What would you do if you had $10?" The young rocker reportedly muttered, "If I had $10, I wouldn't be here." Holly had clearly set his sights on something other than growing up to join his brothers in their tiling business.
After high school, Holly formed a band and played country and western songs regularly on a Lubbock radio station. He frequently opened for more prominent national acts that toured through town. Bandmate Sonny Curtis viewed Holly's opening for Elvis Presley in 1955 as a crucial turning point for the singer. "When Elvis came along," Curtis recalls, "Buddy fell in love with Elvis and we began to change. The next day we became Elvis clones." Although the bespectacled, bow-tied youth lacked Elvis's incendiary sex appeal, Holly's conversion from country to rock 'n' roll did not go unnoticed. A record company talent scout soon caught his act at a skating rink and signed him to a contract.
In early 1956, Holly and his band began recording demos and singles in Nashville under the name Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes, but the group's lineup was later revised and dubbed The Crickets. Holly wrote and recorded his breakthrough hit, "That'll Be the Day," with The Crickets in 1957. The song's title and refrain are a reference to a line uttered by John Wayne in the 1956 film The Searchers. Between August 1957 and August 1958, Holly and the Crickets charted seven different Top 40 singles. Coincidentally, "That'll Be the Day" topped the U.S. chart exactly 500 days before Holly's untimely death.
03:15 - 3 - Solo Career and Untimely Death:
In October 1958, Holly split from The Crickets and moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. Due to legal and financial problems resulting from the band's breakup, Holly reluctantly agreed to tour through the Midwest in 1959 with The Winter Dance Party. Tired of enduring broken-down buses in subfreezing conditions, Holly chartered a private plane to take him from a show in Clear Lake, Iowa, to the tour's next stop in Moorhead, Minnesota. Holly was joined on the doomed flight by fellow performers Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. The plane crashed within minutes of leaving the ground, killing all aboard. Buddy Holly was just 22 years old. His funeral was held at the Tabernacle Baptist Church back in Lubbock.
Holly proposed on his first date with Maria Elena Santiago, a receptionist four years his senior, and married her less than two months later in 1958. Maria Elena did not attend Holly's funeral, as she had also just suffered a miscarriage. She still owns the rights to Holly's name, image, trademarks and other intellectual property.
Holly's death was memorialized in Don McLean's iconic song "American Pie" as "the day the music died." Holly's music never really died, though, despite the singer's tragic and untimely death. Unissued recordings and compilations of Holly's work were released in a steady stream throughout the 1960s. Due to the continued popularity of his music and film adaptations of his life's story, Holly's hiccup and horn-rimmed glasses are easily recognizable today. Though his professional career spanned just two short years, Holly's recorded material has influenced the likes of Elvis Costello and Bob Dylan, who, at age 17, saw Holly perform on his final tour. The Rolling Stones had their first Top 10 single in 1964 with a cover of Holly's "Not Fade Away." The Beatles chose their name as a kind of homage to The Crickets, and Paul McCartney has since purchased Holly's publishing rights.

Jerry Lee Lewis
00:00 - Jerry Lee Lewis
00:04 - 1 - life:
Jerry Lee Lewis, (born September 29, 1935, Ferriday, Louisiana, U.S.), American singer and pianist whose virtuosity, ecstatic performances, and colourful personality made him a legendary rock music pioneer.
Born into poverty, Lewis began playing the piano at age nine at the home of an aunt. His father, a carpenter and bootlegger, saw his passion and talent and mortgaged their house to buy a piano. Lewis emulated the playing styles of a local preacher and black musicians, whom he surreptitiously observed during their appearances at local clubs, and was soon performing at school assemblies, talent shows, and tent revivals, as well as on the radio. He tried to break into the music business in New Orleans and Shreveport, Louisiana (on radio’s Louisiana Hayride), and in Nashville, Tennessee. Drawn by the success of Elvis Presley, he landed at the Sun label in Memphis, Tennessee.
01:05 - 2 - Last name:
Nicknamed “the Killer,” Lewis established himself as a major rockabilly star on Sun Records with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Breathless,” all Top Ten hits in 1957 and 1958. His rhythmically assured and versatile “pumping” piano style (the left hand maintaining a driving boogie pattern while the right added flashy ornamentation) was influenced by church music and country musicians such as Moon Mullican, who played western swing and honky-tonk. Other early influences included Al Jolson, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, zealous Pentecostal preachers, and African American rhythm-and-blues musicians whom the young Southerner stole away to observe.
01:50 - 3 - Conflicts:
A highly skilled instrumentalist and vocalist, Lewis wrote few songs. His was the art of the stylist, the interpreter able to put a personal stamp on a vast and diverse repertoire. A man of tremendous contradictions, he was tormented by conflicts between the hedonism of rock and roll and his strict religious upbringing. Like his cousin, television evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, with whom he grew up, Lewis was torn between flesh and spirit. He captivated legions of fans with his flamboyant attitude and unpredictable, charismatic showmanship in stage, television, and film appearances. His blond hair falling in his face, he exhibited seemingly boundless energy and a menacing sexuality while carrying out various stage antics: standing on the piano, playing it with arms and feet, kicking over the stool, even lighting the instrument on fire.
In 1958 scandal nearly ended his career. While on tour in England, Lewis was scorned by the press when it was learned that he had married his 13-year-old cousin (the daughter of his bassist). That Lewis’s previous marriage was still valid only made matters worse. Despite the ensuing boycott, Lewis continued recording and performing wherever he could. In 1961 his version of Ray Charles’s “What’d I Say” was a hit. Lewis soon returned to England, this time greeted as a star. Nevertheless, his comeback was complete only in the late 1960s, after he had shifted his musical focus and had a series of hits on the country charts; his success in that genre extended into the early 1980s.
03:30 - 4 - The scandal:
As Lewis entered middle age, his recordings became more sporadic, though he won positive notice later in his life for Last Man Standing (2006), an album of duets with a panoply of rock, blues, and country legends. A similarly conceived record, Mean Old Man, was released in 2010. Rock & Roll Time (2014) also featured a number of notable musicians, though Lewis provided the main vocals.
03:59 - 5 - problems with personal life:
The subject of biographies, documentaries, and a major Hollywood film, Lewis’s life was punctuated by erratic behaviour, alcohol and drug problems, bouts of ill health, tax debts, wild escapades, and six marriages. His talent, persistence, longevity, and huge legacy of recordings, however, guarantee his place among rock music’s royalty. Lewis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

Medical marijuana
00:00 - Medical marijuana
00:05 - 1 - It's safe:
There are few subjects that can stir up stronger emotions among doctors, scientists, researchers, policy makers, and the public than medical marijuana. Is it safe? Should it be legal? Decriminalized? Has its effectiveness been proven? What conditions is it useful for? Is it addictive? How do we keep it out of the hands of teenagers? Is it really the "wonder drug" that people claim it is? Is medical marijuana just a ploy to legalize marijuana in general?
These are just a few of the excellent questions around this subject, questions that I am going to studiously avoid so we can focus on two specific areas: why do patients find it useful, and how can they discuss it with their doctor?
Marijuana is currently legal, on the state level, in 29 states, and in Washington, DC. It is still illegal from the federal government’s perspective. The Obama administration did not make prosecuting medical marijuana even a minor priority. President Donald Trump promised not to interfere with people who use medical marijuana, though his administration is currently threatening to reverse this policy. About 85% of Americans support legalizing medical marijuana, and it is estimated that at least several million Americans currently use it.
01:29 - 2 - What is cannabidio:
Least controversial is the extract from the hemp plant known as CBD (which stands for cannabidiol) because this component of marijuana has little, if any, intoxicating properties. Marijuana itself has more than 100 active components. THC (which stands for tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical that causes the "high" that goes along with marijuana consumption. CBD-dominant strains have little or no THC, so patients report very little if any alteration in consciousness.
Patients do, however, report many benefits of CBD, from relieving insomnia, anxiety, spasticity, and pain to treating potentially life-threatening conditions such as epilepsy. One particular form of childhood epilepsy called Dravet syndrome is almost impossible to control but responds dramatically to a CBD-dominant strain of marijuana called Charlotte’s Web. The videos of this are dramatic.
02:27 - 3 - Uses of medical marijuana
The most common use for medical marijuana in the United States is for pain control. While marijuana isn’t strong enough for severe pain (for example, post-surgical pain or a broken bone), it is quite effective for the chronic pain that plagues millions of Americans, especially as they age. Part of its allure is that it is clearly safer than opiates (it is impossible to overdose on and far less addictive) and it can take the place of NSAIDs such as Advil or Aleve, if people can’t take them due to problems with their kidneys or ulcers or GERD.
In particular, marijuana appears to ease the pain of multiple sclerosis, and nerve pain in general. This is an area where few other options exist, and those that do, such as Neurontin, Lyrica, or opiates are highly sedating. Patients claim that marijuana allows them to resume their previous activities without feeling completely out of it and disengaged.
Along these lines, marijuana is said to be a fantastic muscle relaxant, and people swear by its ability to lessen tremors in Parkinson’s disease. I have also heard of its use quite successfully for fibromyalgia, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, and most other conditions where the final common pathway is chronic pain.
Marijuana is also used to manage nausea and weight loss and can be used to treat glaucoma. A highly promising area of research is its use for PTSD in veterans who are returning from combat zones. Many veterans and their therapists report drastic improvement and clamor for more studies, and for a loosening of governmental restrictions on its study. Medical marijuana is also reported to help patients suffering from pain and wasting syndrome associated with HIV, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease.
This is not intended to be an inclusive list, but rather to give a brief survey of the types of conditions for which medical marijuana can provide relief. As with all remedies, claims of effectiveness should be critically evaluated and treated with caution.
04:31 - 4 - Talking with your doctor
Many patients find themselves in the situation of wanting to learn more about medical marijuana, but feel embarrassed to bring this up with their doctor. This is in part because the medical community has been, as a whole, overly dismissive of this issue. Doctors are now playing catch-up and trying to keep ahead of their patients’ knowledge on this issue. Other patients are already using medical marijuana, but don’t know how to tell their doctors about this for fear of being chided or criticized.
My advice for patients is to be entirely open and honest with your physicians and to have high expectations of them. Tell them that you consider this to be part of your care and that you expect them to be educated about it, and to be able to at least point you in the direction of the information you need.
My advice for doctors is that whether you are pro, neutral, or against medical marijuana, patients are embracing it, and although we don’t have rigorous studies and "gold standard" proof of the benefits and risks of medical marijuana, we need to learn about it, be open-minded, and above all, be non-judgmental. Otherwise, our patients will seek out other, less reliable sources of information; they will continue to use it, they just won’t tell us, and there will be that much less trust and strength in our doctor-patient relationship. I often hear complaints from other doctors that there isn’t adequate evidence to recommend medical marijuana, but there is even less scientific evidence for sticking our heads in the sand.
