Book Review: Franklin Pierce: Young Hickory of the Granite Hills
It is the last Sunday of the month which means this weeks #bookoftheweek is Franklin Pierce: Young Hickory of the Granite Hills by Roy Franklin Nichols. And lacking a cocktail called Young Hickory, or even one called Granite Hills, I made an Angry Spiced Rum:
https://www.angryorchard.com/food-and-mixology/cocktails/crisp-apple/angry-spiced-rum
4 oz Angry Orchard Crisp Apple
1 oz Spiced Rum
1/2 oz Lime Juice
3/4 oz Simple Syrup
1 tsp Allspice Liqueur
The recipe says to shake it up. I experienced a small explosion. I recommend stirring.

Book Review: Don't Call it a Cult: The Shocking Story of Keith Raniere and the Women of NXIVM
This weeks #bookoftheweek explores Keith Raniere and the world of NXIVM, Don't Call it a Cult: The Shocking Story of Keith Raniere and the Women of NXIVM by Sarah Berman was an excellent breakdown of the horrifying shitshow that was Keith Raniere and NXIVM.
The accompanying cocktail comes to us from ANOTHER book, Mixology and Murder: Cocktails Inspired by Infamous Serial Killers, Cold Cases, Cults, and Other Disturbing True Crime Stories by Kierra Sondereker, which can definitely be purchased through Amazon, that's where I bought my copy.
The Clifton Park Club is
2 oz gin
1 egg white
3/4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
1/2 oz raspberry syrup
3 fresh raspberries for garnish
Place all ingredients (except the raspberries) in a cocktail shaker with ice, shake for about 20 seconds, strain into a coupe (or cocktail) glass. Garnish with the raspberries and enjoy. This cocktail was way too good to be matched with a psychopath like Raniere. I actually feel a little bad at how much I liked the cocktail.

Book Review: Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine
This weeks #bookoftheweek is Anne Applebaum's Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine, an excellently researched and written book about the Holodomor. The topical cocktail is Ukrainian Flag Cocktail:
https://www.wickiwackiwoo.com/ukrainian-flag-cocktail-recipe/
If you want to see the cocktail made correctly...so the liquors actually separate and float the way they are supposed to, here is the link the above site includes on making of the cocktail:
https://youtu.be/ModiZUq39bA
The cocktail is equal parts banana liquor and blue curacao. You're supposed to slowly pour the curacao over a spoon so that it floats on top of the banana liqueur, creating a blue and yellow cocktail that looks like the Ukrainian flag. I did not do it right. Mine just came out blue.

Book Review: Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots Who Idolize Him
This weeks #bookoftheweek gives voice to those who, at least physically, survived Guevara's murderous path through Cuba. All bear scars as a result of the encounter, though. Exposing the Real Che Guevara and the Useful Idiots Who Idolize Him by Humberto Fontava is a brisk stroll through horror and tyranny, but an important stroll that anyone who has ever sported Che memorabilia would be well advised to take.
The accompanying cocktail is called Truth and Clarity:
https://www.npr.org/2019/12/31/792675866/a-truth-and-clarity-cocktail-to-carry-us-into-2020
1 1/2 oz White Vermouth
1/2 oz Suntory Toki Whisky
3 oz Club Soda
3 healthy dashes of bitter lemon vinegar or apple cider vinegar
Combine the ingredients in a glass full of ice, add the club soda, and gently stir, Garnish with lemon peel (optional)

Book Review: Millard Fillmore: Biography of a President
This weeks #bookoftheweek is Millard Fillmore: Biography of a President by Robert J. Rayback. Quick biography of our 13th president can't pretty up his enactment and enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Laws in 1850.
The accompanying cocktail is called Conflict and Compromise:
https://www.liquor.com/recipes/conflict-and-compromise/
1 1/2 ozs Tequila (I used Blanco)
3/4 oz melon liquor
3/4 oz lime juice
1/2 oz agave nectar
2 slices jalapeno
7 cilantro leaves
Optional: Garnish with Cilantro
Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake. Double-strain into a glass over crushed ice. Garnish if you want and enjoy. The Husband says it tastes like a watermelon now n later. Not bad overall. While I could smell the tequila, I could not taste it, so that was a win.

Book Review: The United States of Fear
This weeks #bookoftheweek is The United States of Fear by Dr. Mark McDonald. A quick dive into what exactly is Mass Delusional Psychosis and what can we do about it?
The accompanying #cocktail is, appropriately enough, called Psychosis.
https://makemeacocktail.com/cocktail/4091/psychosis/
1/2 shot Malibu Rum
1/2 shot Lime Juice
1 shot Coke
1 dash Grenadine
1 shot Apple Juice
1/2 shot Absinthe (red)
1/2 shot Lemon Vodka
1/2 shot Blue Curacao
I could not find absinthe red, which has hyacinth for color and flavor, so I went with traditional...except for the government interference...Absinthe. Overall this cocktail was...ok. Drinkable. A bit sour. Could definitely taste the wormwood.

Book Review: Zachary Taylor: Soldier, Planter, Statesman of the Old Southwest
This weeks #bookoftheweek is Zachary Taylor: Soldier, Planter, Statesman of the Old Southwest by K. Jack Bauer, about our 12th president and the second to die in office, Zachary Taylor.
The complimentary cocktail is Old Rough and Ready, which was President Taylor's nickname when he was a soldier and General with the US Army.
The cocktail itself was supposedly from South House, Jersey City, NJ; however, it does not appear to be on their current menu. I found it online here:
https://www.redbookmag.com/food-recipes/recipes/g1842/best-cocktails-in-america/
The recipe is
Torched Thyme
2 oz Kentucky Bourbon
3/4 oz fresh squeezed lemon
3/4 oz honey syrup (one part honey to one part hot water. I put both in a small mason jar, put the lid on, and shook until the honey and water were fully blended and liquid)
Dash of Orange Bitters
Lemon Garnish
My smoking escapade did not go so well, owing to the thyme was still too green, but you light the plant on fire on a fireproof dish (recommend having a fire extinguisher handy for this one), then once the plant is smoking, place your cup upside down over it so the glass fills with the smoke. The thyme should be SMOKING, not on active fire. Think how incense burns for an idea of what you should be seeing. While the glass is smoking, put the rest of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and shake it up. Put fresh ice in your smoked glass, pour the mixed cocktail, garnish with lemon.

Book Review: What Would Skeletor Do? Diabolical Ways to Master the Universe
This weeks #bookoftheweek is What Would Skeletor Do? Diabolical Ways to Master the Universe by Robb Pearlman. This tongue in cheek sarcasta-manual on how to live life was a very fast 30 minute read that left me wondering: Is this genuinely good advice? Or the outcome of an extremely toxic personality? (Skeletors, not Mr. Pearlman's. I have not met Mr. Pearlman. I'm sure he's lovely :) )
The cocktail is, no surprise, Skeletor:
https://www.cocktail.uk.com/cocktails/skeletor
2 parts Gin
1 part Blue Caracao
1/2 part Grand Marnier
1 part Parfait Amour (I substituted Creme de Violette)
Top with Lemonade
1 Maraschino Cherry
Dash of Elderflower Syrup
Pour Gin and Grand Marnier into a glass and stir. Add Blue Caracao and Parfait Amour (Creme de Violette). Top with Lemonade. Add Dash of Elderflower Syrup and Maraschino Cherry.
I mixed it out of order on camera, but I made a second while the video was uploading, and it is still Blue. The Creme de Violette did not override the blue of the Blue Caracao. Not sure if Parfait Amour would make it purple or not.

Book Review: Polk: the Man Who Transformed the Presidency and America
The 11th president and topic of this weeks #bookoftheweek is James K. Polk and the book is Polk: The Man Who Transformed the Presidency and America by Walter R. Borneman. Book Review: Bad Blood: The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment

Topical Cocktail is, appropriately enough, a healthy does of Penicillin:
https://www.liquor.com/recipes/penicillin/
2 ozs blended scotch
3/4 oz lemon juice
3/4 oz honey-ginger syrup (To make: combine 1 cup of honey, 1 cup of water, and 1 6-inch piece of ginger peeled and thinly sliced in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to medium and boil for 5 minutes. Refrigerate overnight before straining out the ginger.)
1/4 oz Islay single malt scotch
Candied Ginger to garnish
Place the blended scotch, lemon juice, and honey-ginger syrup in a shaker with ice and shake. Strain over fresh ice. Float the 1/4 oz Islay single malt scotch over the top. Drop a candied ginger in. Enjoy!

Book Review: Permanent Record
This weeks book of the week is Permanent Record by Edward Snowden. This book should be required reading in high school, and there are multiple college level courses that should examine it as well. Highly recommend everyone read this one.
The cocktail was a spy classic Martini....shaken not stirred, which is the wrong way to mix a martini, but that's how Bond always ordered it, so here it is:
https://www.thespruceeats.com/classic-gin-martini-recipe-759739
Cracked ice
2½ ounces London dry gin, such as Beefeater
½ ounce dry vermouth, such as Noilly Prat
Optional dash of bitters
Green olive for garnish
Place all in shaker with ice. Should be stirred, but of course I shook mine. Serve with green olive. It was gross. I dislike the classic gin martini.

Book Review: Byzantium: The Surprising Life of a Medieval Empire
This book is way more enjoyable if you treat each chapter as a stand alone essay on a specific topic, rather than expecting a linear story about the Byzantine Empire.
This weeks cocktail comes to us from Difford's Guide (not sponsored, just using their recipe)
https://www.diffordsguide.com/cocktails/recipe/347/byzantine
Muddle Six fresh Basil leaves, then add ice
1.5 ozs of dry gin
.5 ozs Passionfruit syrup
.5 ozs lime and lemongrass cordial. I made my own using the recipe from this site: https://www.womensweeklyfood.com.au/recipes/lime-and-lemongrass-cordial-22796
2 ozs Pineapple juice
Mix together in shaker and pour over ice. Now, the original recipe calls for a collins glass, which I missed, and poured mine in to a short tumbler. If you use a collins glass, top it off with tonic water. Since I missed that and my glass was too short, I drank it straight, which was good! I later added some tonic water, which I did not care for.

1.5 ozs Blanco Tequila
.5 oz Mezcal
2 ozs fresh lime juice

1 lime wheel for garnish
mix the ingredients in a shaker and pour over ice. To me it tasted like limeade. It was ok. Good thing the tequila was barely tasted, since the smell of it provoked a response from my long ago Tequila Hangover
