Never give up! Within the town of Dunolly, you can find the diggings of the Old Deep Lead. A deep lead is an ancient river that was buried by lava flows and/or sediments, and in Victoria, you can find many of them. Hundreds, if not thousands in fact. The pronounced wave of volcanic eruptions that Victoria experiencing, beginning around 7 million years ago, led to it earning the title of the third largest volcanic province to exist on our planet. And, this is certainly a correct title. Basaltic eruptions, spewed non-viscous flowing lava everywhere. These lava flows, buried extremely ancient rivers. Rivers that had been flowing and in place, for tens of millions to hundreds of millions of years, suddenly got covered up and buried... And with them, all of the valuable treasures also vanished. These rivers, were absolutely saturated with gold. And this gold, was abundant to such an impressive degree, that tens of thousands of people were willing to risk their lives to obtain it. In 2021, Victoria, in Australia's South East, experienced a magnitude 5.9 earthquake, which very unexpectantly occurred, rattling the state, causing some structural damage, and injuring one man, but more then that, it showed all of Victoria, and Australia, that we are still very much tectonically active, even though Australia is located in the middle of a massive tectonic plate, known as the Indo-Australian Tectonic plate. Only 2 years after this, and 3 more notable Earthquakes have occurred in Victoria. One in Sunbury, another in Pakenham, and one in Victoria's Eastern Highlands at Rawson. So let's revisit how a relatively tectonically stable continent can experience this type of event, and document where these most recent quakes occurred, what magnitude they reached, and what they mean for the future. The Aira Caldera is one of the larger recent supervolcanic eruptions to have occurred on our planet. With it roaring to life in a spectacular fashion at some point around 30,000 years ago. This massive eruption formed a pyroclastic flow that was over 800 cubic kilometers in size, and released an additional 300 cubic kilometers worth of tephra ontop of this, at a minimum, too. It covered nearby Japan in a layer of ash, and further plunged the already freezing planet into an ever deeper cold spell, due to the commencement of a volcanic winter, post eruption. Nowadays this volcano is still very much active, and alive, and it's been embodied by the sukurajima stratovolcano. Which took over after the aira caldera eruption occurred, and it itself formed around 26,000 years ago. This is one of the most active volcanic structures to exist in Japan, but thankfully, recently, that has encompassed small, and somewhat tolerable eruptions... For now.

Located near the once-thriving town of Piggoreet. In the present day, little physical remains exist to tell of the area's vibrant history. In the past 7 million years, the ancient land was smothered by volcanic lava flows, burying the ground in up to 50 meters, or 164 feet of lava. The spectacular columnar basalt here makes the Devil's Kitchen unique. They were exposed when the present-day Woady Yaloak River cut its way through the many layers of freshly extruded basaltic rock. Which are the solidified remains of the recently extruded lava flows. The former township is no longer recognizable. Only a few scattered ruins speak of the days when homes and streets got constructed in a recognizable grid-like manner and churches, a police station, and other businesses existed alongside many thriving mining enterprises. To the east of the town of Lal Lal, in Victoria, Australia, lies the remains of an enterprise which was the only of its kind to have ever been attempted in Victoria. This company, formed to exploit a rather strange, and surprising mineral deposit. That was created as a result of the topographical features that exist here. With the land being a basin, which allowed for the accumulation of sediment of both organic, and, inorganic material, which lead to the occurrence of some unique mineral deposits. In this video we will explore the unique geological and geographical settings that allowed for the creation of the lignite and brown coal deposits of Lal Lal. And we'll explain how they formed, why they formed, and why this is the only area where a mine was attempted, to extract the pig iron, in this state, to this day.

The Pyrenees lithology is one of the oldest to exist in Victoria. These deep sea sedimentary rocks were laid down between 510 to 482 million years ago, and they've undergone numerous changes since those times. From being thrust up above the ocean following numerous tectonic collisions, to being buckled into a tall mountain range, to then, having the very rocks that made up the basement of said mountain range, undergo further metamorphic changes after they were partially melted by the nearby intruding batholithic magma chamber. Which literally baked these sedimentary rocks, changing them from a once colourful, layered type of texture, to one that was more of less solidified, consistent, and smooth. With fine grains dominating the matrix. In this video we take a look at a hornfel dominated road cutting in the ancient Pyrenees shire, which is home to some of the most remarkable geology that I've ever seen.

Yes, 30 million years ago is considered recent to geologists. So is 250 million years ago ;D Australia has many volcanoes that have erupted very recently. With the last eruption occurred only 5000 years ago. As many people know, Australia is tectonically stable. So, in theory, many people wouldn't expect pronounced earthquakes or volcanoes to occur here. And yet, they have, en masse, for around 31 million years. Starting in Northern Queensland and slowly working their way south over time, reaching Victoria 7 million years ago, where it transformed the land altogether. Burying the ancient landscape that once existed here beneath wave after wave of lava flow. This story of Australia's volcanism is an excellent example of intraplate volcanism. We'll take a look at a volcano that was among the first to roar to life when Queensland became volcanically active again around 30 million years ago, and work our way south to two famous volcanoes in Victoria. The ancient rivers that once snaked their way through the rugged mountainous terraine of ancient Victoria, had more or less flowed the same way for hundreds of millions of years. That way, being towards the present day Murray. Which, in the grand scheme of things, is actually the most present day iteration of the ancient waterways that coursed their way through the geological basins that exist in this part of Australia. Which is something they've been doing for over 400 million years. This is a story of how this landscape that was thrust out of a deep sea, and remained relatively geologically stable for close to 300 million years, suddenly became buried beneath thin veneers of lava flows from Australia's recent volcanic activity, which would go on to eventually cover some areas, in the solidified rock version of the lava, basalt, up to a depth of 50 meters or more in some areas.
