Today we are going to show you where and what we are building because we are ready to start construction on our first hyperadobe building!

Hi and welcome! We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

Now that our perimeter fence is done, we have had a lot of people asking when are you going to start your house? Well, we are not quite ready for that project! We need to do some smaller buildings first and really learn how to work with hyperadobe well and we thought one of the animal outbuildings would be a perfect place to start. Most of you know that we have a lot of experience with chickens when we still lived in the city. We kept a backyard flock for about 8 years and we loved it! Chickens are one of the easier homestead animals to keep, so we thought this would be a great place to start….so, yep, we are building a hyperadobe earth bag chicken coop!

We plan on keeping at least two and possibly three types of chickens….we will be keeping a large flock of what is known as “barnyard mix” which will be our pastured, free-range mix that will be our meat birds and our main egg layers.

We decided one of the income streams we would like to start is raising purebred chickens and we have some breeds in mind…probably Chinese Silkies and possibly one other breed. These will not be raised for meat, but we will be raising them to breed them, sell their hatching eggs, their chicks, and their pullets/roosters. We will be picking breeds that are higher dollar value, so they will not be free range, but instead will have access to the coop and a very large chicken run. These purebred birds need to be completely separate from the main barnyard flock because otherwise the breeds would mix.

We don’t have any experience with raising ornamental, show, or purebred chickens, so any suggestions or breed suggestions any of you have, we would appreciate!

We hope you all have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving!!

In our next episode, we are going to get started on our chicken coop construction!
