Media coverage of weather disasters can negatively impact kids
Increased exposure to media coverage of weather disasters can lead to post-traumatic stress symptoms in young children. In a new study published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, researchers used imaging of the brain and information about anxiety and trauma for 400 children between the ages of 9 and 11. They then collected data regarding their exposure to media coverage of Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful hurricanes in recent years, as well as post-traumatic stress symptoms. Regardless of how close the children were to the storm, exposure to media coverage of the hurricane increased stress-related symptoms. The researchers believe children are especially vulnerable during disasters such as hurricanes. The study suggests parents consider the effects of prolonged exposure to TV coverage of weather emergencies to protect the mental health of their kids.

Caffeine consumption can improve the health of pregnant women
While in the past it was thought that drinking coffee during pregnancy was harmful, a new study suggests that low-to-moderate caffeine consumption might be safe. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania studied over 2,500 pregnant women, asking them about the number of caffeinated beverages they drank, taking blood samples to measure caffeine, and following them for the development of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, or hypertension. They found that caffeine consumption during pregnancy wasn’t associated with an increased risk of any of the three conditions, and in fact, women who drank low to moderate amounts of coffee were nearly 50 percent less likely to develop gestational diabetes. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that women shouldn’t exceed more than 200 mg of caffeine during pregnancy, or roughly one 12-ounce coffee per day.

Tips for a healthy Thanksgiving
I don't know about you, but I expect to eat way too much during this Thanksgiving holiday. Here are some simple ways to stay healthy during this festive time. It's ok to eat whatever foods you want but try to limit how much you eat. Eat breakfast and lunch so you aren't as hungry heading into the big meal. And stay active, doing some form of exercise every day. Even walking around your neighborhood could burn some of the extra calories and decrease the stress of these hectic days. And finally, it's ok to drink alcohol while celebrating with your friends and family but keep it to a minimum.

Positive encouragement can help picky eaters
If you have picky eaters in your family, you might try positive encouragement to try to improve their habits. Researchers at Duke University surveyed over 19,000 self-proclaimed picky eaters, asking them about personal experiences with food aversions and how their family members or partners handled their food pickiness. The researchers then used artificial intelligence to better understand how those experiences emotionally impacted the participants. They found that when participants felt forced to eat, it was a negative experience. Instead, more encouraging and supportive efforts led to better outcomes. To be more positive with picky eaters, try asking for help with food preparation, explaining the nutritional benefits of certain foods, and being flexible with meals.

Adding herbs and spices to your meals might lower your blood pressure
Seasoning your food with herbs and spices might do more than make your food taste better. It might improve your health. In a new study from the American Society for Nutrition, researchers at Oxford and Penn State University found that adults who seasoned foods with just over one teaspoon of herbs and spices was associated with lower blood pressure after four weeks. Simply switching from using herbs and spices instead of salt to add flavor to your meals might be a simple way to help improve your heart health.

Going to bed between 10 and 11 PM might be best for your heart
Going to bed between 10 and 11 PM might be best for your heart, according to a new study published in the European Heart Journal - Digital Health. Researchers at the University of Exeter in the UK followed more than 88,000 adults, tracking the times they went to bed and woke up, as well as the development of cardiovascular disease, like heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes. They found that three percent of the participants developed cardiovascular disease. The risk was highest in those who went to bed after midnight. It was lowest among those who fell asleep between 10 and 11 PM, likely because it disrupts our normal circadian rhythms the least.
