Harnwell: Ukraine has asked the US for approval to strike inside Russia with US-provided missiles

Kiev has been pressuring the US to be able to use the weapons the US provided it with, to strike inside Russian territory. Up until now, the Biden Admin response has always been “no” — however now, it’s actively “reviewing” it.

Biden can afford for neither US/NATO to formally enter the war, nor for Kiev to fall — at least before November. Both would be electoral suicide. But US missiles firing at Russia could easily precipitate the first possibility. On the other hand, Putin doesn’t want to fight NATO. So from now to Nov, it’s all about the status quo. This is where Biden makes the pitch: Don’t take Kiev before Nov (but after that, let’s talk…)
