Found in the forests of Southeast asia is a wild cat that has become a common household pet. On this episode we bring you the Asian Leopard cat.

Lurking among the rain forests, deciduous and coniferous forests, semi deserts and scrublands this small spotted wild cat has more than 10 subspecies.

Measuring up to 30 inches or e quarters of a meter long and weighing up to 16 lbs or 7.3 kg this cat is known for their unique fur coat. Based on their geographical location, their coat will differ in color being more yellowish in the southern regions and silver in northern parts. Falling victim to heavy poaching, the asian leopard cat's coat has high value on the black market. Habitat loss is also to blame for the declining numbers of this cat as well.

Thes nocturnal meat eaters feast on rodents, hares, amphibians, shrews, reptiles, fish and eggs. They are highly territorial animals with males claiming a 1.4 sq mile or 3.6 sq km area where females mark out a 0.8 sq mile or 2 sq km area as their territory. They claim their territory by scratching marks on trees and using their feces and urine to set boundaries. Males and females will have portions of their territory that overlaps, creating a mutual space where they’ll mate.

In more northern climates mating season runs from March to April where leopard cats living in warm climates can reproduce year around. A female will give birth to 2-4 kittens after 60 to 70 days. The kittens will be born blind and defenceless in their hidden den. The mother will ferociously defend her den from predators but the males can be found rearing of the kittens as well. Able to reproduce at 1.5 years old the asian leopard cat can live up to 13 years in the wild.

People have found it’s possible to breed this wild cat with a domestic house cats to create a new hybrid which is known as the bengal cat. These popular rosetted, spotted or striped mini tiger look alike cats are highly loyal, energetic, playful and intelligent. Bengal cats typically are a larger version of a house cat with wild instincts and some unique built in tricks like doing backflips. When bengals are bred with other cats like a siamese rare combinations can be created like this flame point siamese which is nearly 90% bengal and only 10% siamese.

Do you think humanity should be breeding wild animals like the asian leopard cat with domestic cats to create new breeds like the bengal cat or does this violate some unspoken rule? Let us know in the comments down below.
