Kate Winslet takes on the role of World War II photographer Lee Miller in Ellen Kuras’ directorial debut Lee, the trailer of which was dropped by the makers of Wednesday.

Backed by Roadside Attractions and Vertical Entertainment, Lee revolves around a model-turned-war photographer for Vogue who courageously captured the harsh realities of World War II.

The trailer highlights Miller’s unwavering determination to expose the truth behind the Nazi regime, despite the challenges faced by female journalists of her time. Josh O'Connor, known for playing Prince Charles in The Crown, portrays Tony in Lee. He is a young journalist interviewing Miller years after the end of the war. Tony asks Miller if she wishes to have recognition for her efforts, to which she responds, “You think I went to war so people would know my name?”

Lee’s screenplay has been penned by Liz Hannah, John Collee, and Marion Hume. The upcoming movie is based on Antony Penrose’s 1988 book The Lives of Lee Miller.

Joining Winslet and Josh in the biopic are Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Noémie Merlant and Alexander Skarsgård, rounding out the cast.

Lee is slated to hit theatres on September 27.
The trailer of Kate Winslet’s next Lee, in which she stars as esteemed World War II photographer Lee Miller, has been released. The film is based on Antony Penrose’s 1988 book The Lives of Lee Miller.

Winslet plays the role of Miller, who began her career as a model before documenting World War II as a photographer for Vogue. According to Rolling Stone, she took some of World War II’s most memorable photos including a selfie of her sitting in Hitler’s bathtub. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Josh O’Connor, Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Noémie Merlant and Alexander Skarsgård.

Lee is directed by directed by cinematographer Ellen Kuras, who makes her feature directorial debut after being the cinematographer for films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Summer of Sam, and so on. The film is set to release in theaters on September 27.

Winslet’s last appearance was in HBO mini-series The Regime, in which she plays a paranoid populist leader, whose grip on the regime (and her mind) turns unstable after she falls for a volatile soldier.
"Even when I wanted to look away, I knew I couldn't." Roadside Attractions has revealed the official trailer for a movie titled Lee, a biopic about the famed war photographer known as Lee Miller. This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last fall, and played at AFI Fest in LA. It's the first feature film directed by acclaimed cinematographer Ellen Kuras. TIFF's intro: "Oscar winner Kate Winslet stars in this fascinating portrait of the great American war correspondent Lee Miller, whose singular talent & ferocious tenacity gave us some of the 20th century's most indelible images... The story begins in the South of France, 1938, where Lee Miller is vacationing with her dearest and closest friends who are artists, poets, and confidants." She was a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during WWII. The ensemble cast in this film includes Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough, Marion Cotillard, Josh O'Connor, Noémie Merlant, Samuel Barnett, and Andy Samberg as her photographer friend David E. Scherman who joined her on the front. "Lee lived her life at full throttle, for which she paid a huge emotional price." It seems like an intense experience, as a film about the horrors of war should. Take a look.

Lee, the directorial feature from award-winning cinematographer Ellen Kuras, portrays a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer, Lee Miller (played by Kate Winslett). Miller's singular talent and unbridled tenacity resulted in some of the 20th century's most indelible images of war, including an iconic photo of Miller herself, posing defiantly in Hitler's private bathtub. Lee Miller had a profound understanding and empathy for women and for the voiceless victims of war. Her images display both the fragility and ferocity of the human experience. Above all, the film shows how Miller lived her life at full-throttle in pursuit of truth, for which she paid a huge personal price, forcing her to confront a traumatic & deeply buried secret from her childhood. Lee is directed by the American cinematographer / filmmaker Ellen Kuras, making her feature directorial debut after directing for TV, including episodes of "The Umbrella Academy" and "Inventing Anna". The screenplay is written by Liz Hannah and Marion Hume & John Collee; from a story by Lem Dobbs and Marion Hume & John Collee. Adapted from the biography "The Lives of Lee Miller" by Antony Penrose. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last fall. Roadside will debut Lee in select US theaters starting September 27th, 2024. Who wants to watch?

In June 2020, after years of speculation, it was confirmed that Kate Winslet would take on the role of Lee Miller, British Vogue’s prolific World War II correspondent under the magazine’s formidable editor-in-chief Audrey Withers, in a new film directed by Oscar-nominated auteur Ellen Kuras. (Kuras previously worked with Winslet on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, for which she served as cinematographer.) Now, the first trailer has finally been released, revealing our first look at Winslet in character as Miller, indefatigable in the face of unimaginable horror.

Titled Lee, the hotly anticipated release will take inspiration from the biography The Lives of Lee Miller by Antony Penrose—Miller’s son with her second husband Roland Penrose, a historian and champion of the Surrealist movement—with The Post’s Liz Hannah penning the script in collaboration with Lem Dobbs, John Collee, Marion Hume, and The Lee Miller Archives. Alongside Winslet as Miller, Alexander Skarsgård will play Roland Penrose (the part had previously gone to Jude Law, but the actor has since departed the project), and Josh O’Connor will take on the part of Antony Penrose. Meanwhile, Andrea Riseborough will appear as Audrey Withers and Marion Cotillard as Solange D’Ayen, the fashion director of French Vogue who was another close ally of Miller’s.

Also joining them? Noémie Merlant as French artist Nusch Éluard; Samuel Barnett as another Vogue contributor, the legendary photographer Cecil Beaton; and Andy Samberg as David E. Scherman, who covered the war for Life magazine and worked with Miller on several assignments (he took the now-iconic image of her soaking in the bathtub of Hitler’s Munich apartment in 1945).

The drama’s log line describes it as “not a biopic,” but an exploration of “the most significant decade of Lee Miller’s life”—the period between 1938 and 1948. “As a middle-aged woman, she refused to be remembered as a model and male artists’ muse,” it adds. “She defied the expectations and rules of the time and travelled to Europe to report from the frontline. There, in part as a reaction to her own well-hidden trauma, she used her Rolleiflex camera to give a voice to the voiceless. What Lee captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking. Her photographs of the war, its victims and its consequences remain among the most historically important [of the conflict]. She changed war photography forever, but Lee paid an enormous personal price for what she witnessed and the stories she fought to tell.”

Miller famously began her career as a model for Vogue US after Condé Nast himself prevented her from stepping in front of a car in Manhattan and brought her to meet then editor-in-chief Edna Woolman Chase. She later relocated to Paris to study photography under Man Ray—becoming his lover and muse for several years. Following the Blitz, she signed on to be British Vogue’s official war correspondent. Traveling to France shortly after D-Day, she captured the siege of St. Malo; the liberation of Paris; and the opening of Dachau for the magazine’s pages. In spite of her professional success, she experienced depression throughout her life.

As for when this sweeping tale will reach the big screen? September 20, 2024. Mark your calendars now.
Lee's first trailer shows off Kate Winslet's journey as World War II photojournalist Lee Miller.
The film follows Miller's journey from fashion model to war correspondent for Vogue magazine.
Lee premiered at TIFF last year and earned somewhat lukewarm reviews, with Winslet's performance frequently cited as a high point.
Kate Winslet becomes acclaimed photographer Lee Miller in the first trailer for Lee, a World War II drama. Directed by Ellen Kuras, Lee chronicles Miller's real-life journey as she goes from fashion model to wartime correspondent for Vogue magazine. In addition to Winslet, the film stars Andy Samberg, Marion Cotillard, Alexander Skarsgård, Andrea Riseborough, and Josh O'Connor.

Ahead of Lee's theatrical release date later this year, RoadsideFlix releases the film's first official teaser trailer. Check it out below:

The trailer features a number of different looks at Winslet's character at different points in her life, as well as teases what to expect from the film's impressive supporting cast. In addition to more emotional, poignant moments, the film will seemingly not shy away from showing some of the horrors of war.

Lee could make for an interesting double feature with Alex Garland's well-reviewed Civil War. Both films explore wartime photojournalism, and a reference is made in the latter film regarding Kirsten Dunst's character having the same first name as Lee Miller.

How Lee Was Received After Its TIFF Premiere
Some Critics Have Already Reviewed The New Kate Winslet Film

Although Lee isn't hitting theaters until this September, the film actually already screened for some audiences at last year's Toronto International Film Festival. Reviews for Lee dropped not long afterward and the response so far has been generally positive. After appearing as part of the cast of Titanic opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, Winslet has become one of Hollywood's most talented and acclaimed actors, and most reviews seem to agree that she is one of the strongest parts of Lee.

Winslet and Riseborough recently appeared together as part of the cast of The Regime, a HBO miniseries that aired earlier this year.

As of writing, Lee holds a respectable but somewhat muted 65% on Rotten Tomatoes from 25 critics' reviews. This score is sure to change as more reviews are added, but the more lukewarm response thus far suggests the movie may not end up being a major awards contender. While opinions in the reviews differ, a consensus among critics seems to be that Lee feels like a fairly standard biopic, unfortunately falling victim to many of the genre's tropes and shortcomings.

Even if Lee ends up being fairly by-the-numbers as far as biopics go, the trailer does tease a new type of role for Samberg, who is frequently in more comedic projects. With talented actors like Skarsgård, Cotillard, and Riseborough also making up the supporting cast, it seems, at the very least, that the film will feature some strong, entertaining performances. It remains to be seen how audiences receive Lee, but the film, if nothing else, will shed some light on a major figure in the world of war photojournalism.
Fashion model turned war photographer Lee Miller (1907-1977) lived an incredible, at times tragic, life. Lee, a biopic about Miller starring award-winning actor Kate Winslet, has mirrored the eponymous artist’s life insofar as it too has experienced its ups and downs. Finally, after nearly a decade, a trailer has arrived and the movie is coming to theaters.

Although Lee has already made some appearances at various film festivals, it has yet to make its theatrical debut for the wider public. The long-awaited trailer, seen below, reveals that photography enthusiasts can see Winslet’s take on Lee Miller on September 27, 2024.

Although Winslet is the star thanks to her turn as the late Miller, the movie features other big Hollywood names, including Alexander Skarsgård as Miller’s second husband, Roland Penrose, and Josh O’Connor as their son, Antony, who is himself a photographer and the director of the Lee Miller Archive and Penrose Collection at the family’s former home, Farley Farm House.

The movie is based on Antony Penrose’s book, The Lives of Lee Miller, which is part photo essay and part biography of his mother.

The movie also stars well-known names like Andy Samberg as David E. Scherman, Andrea Riseborough as Audrey Withers, and Marion Cotillard as Solange D’Ayen. Miller crossed paths with famous artists Man Ray and Pablo Picasso, both of whom are represented in the film, as well.

Lee is directed by Ellen Kuras, making her directorial debut, and written by Liz Hannah, Marion Hume, and John Collee. The cinematographer is Pawel Edelman.

The film has earned positive reviews at its film festival appearances thus far, with numerous reviews lauding Winslet for her performance as Miller.

It is an excellent time to be a photography enthusiast and film fan, as on top of Lee arriving on the silver screen this September, another big Hollywood film, Civil War, also turns the cinema lens toward photojournalism and is in theaters now.

Although, unlike Civil War, which is thankfully fictional given its dystopian tilt, Lee is very much about an actual photographer who did extraordinary things. Lee Miller was a powerful, talented woman in an era where women had to fight tooth and nail to get any opportunities behind a camera.

PetaPixel looked back at Miller’s work last year when Lee made its appearance at the Toronto Film Festival. September 27 is a date worth circling for fans of photography, history, or powerful women like Lee Miller and Kate Winslet.
In June 2020, after years of speculation, it was confirmed that Kate Winslet would take on the role of Lee Miller, British Vogue’s prolific World War II correspondent under the magazine’s formidable editor-in-chief Audrey Withers, in a new Sky Original film directed by Oscar-nominated auteur Ellen Kuras. (Kuras previously worked with Winslet on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, for which she served as cinematographer.) Now, the first trailer has finally been released, revealing our first look at Winslet in character as Miller, indefatigable in the face of unimaginable horror.
